  • Windows 7 GPO - Disable All Removable Media then Re-enable, now CD/DVD drive is inaccessible

Ok, this might be better placed in the Windows 7 forum, but we're having some issues with limiting access to removable media via GPO.
We've set up a GPO for Computer Policy, Admin Templates, System, Removable Storage Access, All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access - Enabled
After finding that this was a bit too restrictive we reset it back to Not Configured (and later Disabled to try and force it) but it seems to break our DVD drives on all Win7 x64 machines (the gpo is limited to apply only to these machines).  Instead
of the usual icon in my computer it shows a description of the CD/DVD in the drive and the usual "unknown file type" icon.  if you take the cd out it shows the usual cd rom icon, but still gives "access denied"
There is one workaround, and that is to set the GPO back to not configured and manually remove the CD/DVD device via device manager, restart, and allow windows to re-install the device drivers.
This is 100% repeatable by applying the same local computer policy (All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access - Enabled" and restarting the machine.
Has anyone else run into this problem before?  And how can we fix it without having to go to every machine to remove the DVD drive from device manager?
    Thanks,
    -Nick

    Hi,
after looking on many pages for a solution i always found the same workarounds - but for me deleting the device is no option because you aren't allowed to delete devices without administrative rights. Also I can't expect that our users always have to reinstall
    the device.
So i analyzed whats going on in the registry when the key "Deny_All" for blocking RemovableStorageAccess is set to 1 - with the running of gpupdate i realized that Windows is writing a registry key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\Device\
named "security". The problem is that windows doesn't delete this key after setting the key "Deny_All" back to 0. Only sometimes it will be deleted, for example when you apply the policy for blocking devices and reverse this setting immediatly without a restart
    of windows.
I made a little script which I integrated in the user-gpo (as logon script) for granting access to the removable storage devices:
    '****SCRIPT START****
' this script searches for all "security"-keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\ and deletes them
    Option Explicit
    Const HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE = &H80000002
    Dim oReg : Set oReg = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\.\root\default:StdRegProv")
    Dim oShell : Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Dim sPath, aSub, sKey, aSubToo, sKeyToo, dwValue
' Get all keys within sPath
    sPath = "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE"
    oReg.EnumKey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, sPath, aSub
    ' Loop through each key
    For Each sKey In aSub
'Get all subkeys within the key 'sKey'
        oReg.EnumKey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, sPath & "\" & sKey, aSubToo
        For Each sKeyToo In aSubToo
            oReg.deleteValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, sPath & "\" & sKey & "\" & sKeyToo , "Security"
            if Err.Number<>0 then
                Err.Clear
            end if
        Next
    Next
    '****SCRIPT END****
The policy for giving access to removable storage looks like this now:
    - a logon script is executed which searches for all "security"-keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\ and deletes them
    - the setting "All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access" ist set to "Disabled"
    I hope this helps...

After running bootcamp, DVD drive is detected by Windows 8. But after installing drivers, no longer can detect. Device Manager shows that DVD drive is unplugged! Drivers in Bootcamp “removed” the DVD drive. I think there is an issue because I reinstalled Windows 8. If I don't install driver, then I have reduced functionality (no Apple keyboard, no sound etc), but once I install driver, I lose my DVD drive.

Hi, guys, I have had the exact same problem since the summer of 2010. Here's what I was able to find out.
Deleting upper/lower filters, running all those Fix Ya programs and other Microsoft crap is useless. This problem is most certainly has nothing to do with registry of any software on your computer. I took my HP 9620us to a couple of repair places and, they tried a lot of things and it appears that the root of this problem is a faulty motherboard connection. Of course, it costs about 400 bucks to fix it so I'm not sure I want to pay this kind of money.
Anyway, if somebody was able to fix it PLEASE post here to let us know. Again I am 99 per cent sure it's some piece of hardware in the motherboard.

  • Windows 7 install stops at "CD/DVD driver not found"

When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.
    Thanks

Can you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.
    OS X Example
    openssl md5 ~/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr
    MD5(/Users/MyName/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr)= 977f4f0f1400be91855789213e07b031
    Windows FCIV example
    D:\>C:\"Program Files (x86)"\FCIV\fciv
// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
    Usage:  fciv.exe [Commands] <Options>
    Commands: ( Default -add )
-add    <file | dir> : Compute hash and send to output (default screen).
                    dir options:

    Hello,
i have a 2009 iMac and Windows 7 64bit in my Boot Camp.

The problem is the DVD-Drive in my iMac is broken, so i can't use my Windows-install-DVD.
    How can i reinstall Windows 7 via USB-Stick on a 2009 iMac with a broken DVD-Drive?

  • Boot Camp: Installing windows - CD/DVD driver not found

    Hi all,
    I have a late 2012 27" iMac - no optical drive. Running 10.9 - Mavericks.
Using Boot Camp Assistant I have created a BOOTCAMP partition, and a bootable Windows 7 USB key.
When I boot into the USB, I can proceed to the point where I click "Install Windows".  The next screen tells me there is a missing CD/DVD driver.  Well no kidding - my computer doesn't have one.
I've tried removing the USB key and putting it in a different USB port at that step - no change.
I've searched all over, but 99% of the similar problems are from people installing from a disc - I'm installing from an ISO on a USB key.
    Any ideas?

  • DVD drive not recognised after initial install of software and drivers - Server 2012 R2

    Hi
I have a SATA DVDRW drive that isnt being recognised by windows server
It is recognised in bios, and was initially recognised by windows, until installing an AV on the server.
Looking under device manager, it can still be seen, but only as a hidden device (greyed out).
Both the C: drive and the DVD drive are set in IDE mode in the bios (believe that is just meaning they are sandalone, rather than RAID mode)
If the DVD drive is moved to another SATA port it is recognised by windows, however I want to keep these ports free, so i can use them to RAID my other HDDs as and when i get round to buying them.
    System specs:
OS - Windows Server 2012 R2 with updates (Microsoft Dreamspark)
    MB - ASUS M5A78L/M - USB3
    RAM - 1x 4GB DDR3
DVD drive - SAMSUNG superwritemaster SH223L
Any help would be good :)
soz if this is in the wrong forum, just point me to the right one
    Thanks

Hi guys - thanks for the responses.....
we just tried something simple - swapping the OS drive and the DVD drive over (DVD was in sata 5, OS in sata 6 - now the other way round)
This seems to have worked, so we are going to keep it that way round
    Seems Silly yet simple
    Thanks again

hi, so you say that the drive will work in another SATA port is there the potential that the SATA port you are currently using has a fault? does it work with any other hardware?
another option is a classic windows fault regarding the corrupt registry filters that would make a CD\DVD drive disappear in explorer, however i am not sure if this problem afflicts sever 2012. you could give it a go to see if it resolves the issue
Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type
    the password, or click Allow
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters
registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, go to the next resolution.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Restart the computer.

  • HT5639 after The Boot Camp for Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

after i made The Boot Camp Setup  for running Microsoft Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

Any ideas why iTunes renders my DVD drive unusable?  I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and when reinstalling I had my device manager open and saw during the installation how my DVD player went from accessible to not being able to start.
    Why is this happening?

There's a few different possibilities with a code 10, Kelly. To narrow in on the likeliest culprits it would help to have a closer look at your system.

  • DVD Drives not working after Snow Leopard install

Hello all. I'm having problems after installing Snow Leopard. Om my MacBook Pro, my DVD drive doesn't even read discs anymore. It keeps it spinning for a while and then ejects it.
Coincidentally, the drive on my iMac 3+ GHZ is not accepting my discs into the DVD drive. It's not sucking in the discs anymore.
Both of these things started happening right after the Snow Leopard installation.
    Can anyone help?

Have been running without trouble and had total ability to burn disc images to DVD until SL installation. after installation, every burn attempt fails to complete, give me an unrecoverabl, unable to restart error. I does burn data to the disc, but fails at some point near the end of the burn wich renders the disc a "coaster". I put my spare HDD back in wich was running 10.5, the problem exists with that drive also. My next step was to load a fresh drive with 10.5, even then the problem exists. I find it hard to believe that the drive failed exactly when SL was installed, more likely that the installation changed a hardware setting, or installed a firmware update which cause the problem. As I am a repair tech, I have done a ton of reaserch on the subject, and I find that litterally 10's of thousands of people have had the same issue after the SL upgrade. Come on Apple, I always heard you were better than Microsoft, but as everyone can see there is a problem. Get working on the fix and patch it just like Microsoft.

  • Windows 7 media center MCE plug-in & Elements 8 - can not access catalog over network

    Hi,
I have Elements 8 installed on windows 7 and want to use the Microsoft Media Center photoshop plugin to view photographs and slide shows held on a network share.  How do I configure the plug-in to find the catalog on the share ( at address  P:|Pictures ).
All I can see is an entry for "My Catalog" on screen and a small number of black thumbnails.
    Thanks
    Kilraughts

For some reason when using the "certified" MCE version of the Forceware drivers, after a short while all the buttons in the menus become "corrupted"
The simple solution: use regular XP/2000 version of Forceware drivers. They still work perfectly in MCE2005, and the graphical corruption doesn't appear.

EDIT: this problem appears to have been corrected in the recent Rollup 2 Update

Since there are no Product Specifications for the computer, I don't know the brand of the card reader.  Here is a driver for the Realtek card reader.  If it doesn't work, let me know the brand of it.
