Windows 7 (& Vista) + Intellipoint + lazer mice = scrollwheel issues on most applications

Well I've posted on several places on the web about this, but thought it would be a good idea to start a detailed topic explaining this issue and asking (begging really) for some help from anyone who would be so kind.
I have a Microsoft Ergonomic Laser Mouse 7000 with the newest Intellipoint drivers installed.
I am having issues with the scroll wheel in most apps (e.g. mIRC, Cubase, Syncback, Digsby, Office 2007 and many many more) in both Vista & 7 (XP works perfectly).
When scrolling in certain parts of the program, the scrollwheel does not function unless you scroll "extremely" fast. In Word 2007 for example, if you use ctrl+scrollwheel to zoom, this exact behavior occurs. Similarly with other applications. Even though it may not be apparent that many applications are affected, they may be. For example, in the preference dialog where one may use the scrollwheel to scroll through a dropdown list .etc
I'll try to explain my findings, and would love any help to try and completely resolve the issue:
1) After a fresh install of Vista or W7 RC1, the scroll wheel does not behave correctly in most apps as mentioned above. After some research, I found that MS have implemented a "high resolution" scroll wheel behavior since Vista, which is obviously not supported by all applications (including Microsoft's own software).

The document suggests changing some registry values to disable this high resolution behavior. Thus I did just that and added the following 2 entries to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\HID\Vid_xxxx&Pid_yyyy\<instance_ID>\Device Parameters
VScrollHighResolutionDisable = 1
HScrollHighResolutionDisable = 1
This actually fixed the issue after rebooting, and I thought I had it all sorted.
2) I then thought it would be a good idea to install the latest Intellipont drivers to get all the benefits of the mouse. The drivers are also very helpful because the scrollwheel is usually far too sensitive, and the drivers fix this along with providing powerful customization and battery monitoring.
After installing the drivers, the problem re-appeared. The registry entry I had entered above was still in the registry too.
If I kill ipoint.exe and then disable / enable the mouse driver in Device Manager, the problem goes away. As soon as I start ipoint.exe again, the problem re-appears.
So the main thing I want to figure out, is how to disable this high resolution behaviour with the Intellipoint drivers installed.

The mic works when it wants. When it does work (rarely), its garbled or lagging like crazy.

No, this driver does not improve sound quality nor increase performance.
No, there are no tweaks.
If someone states that its driver improves sound quality and performance, you are being fooled, cheated.
It is even worse that the so called tweaks come from a person who is not EVEN technically acknowledged, does NOT know anything about Windows internals, software engineering and?sound?fidelity that all audiophiles always look for.
If you "feel" the sound better, that is the infamous placebo effect and there is no real proof that any tweaks work.
In fact, I have yet to see a driver that states in its release notes that it improves sound quality.
I've disassembled about every single .SYS driver, .DLL libraries and .EXE executables and found nothing.
There are some undocumented registry values, but nothing related to sound quality or performance.
Would the so called tweaks even exist, they would be in my Support Packs, you can bet that.

Audigy driver does not support 64-bit addressing, resulting in random issues with the Microphone (static, robotic or distorted voice, white noise).
Workarounds:
- install the 32-bit (x86) version of Windows
- limit the RAM available to Windows to less than 4GB
- enable Memore Hole in BIOS Setup, if?your motherboard supports the setting

this is a somewhat advanced guide not meant for those unfamilure with the tools and techniques used here
the basics of this guide can be applied to most/all windows xp/vista notebooks and desktops, not just Lenovo, however in my case i run windows xp pro on a T60 (8743) with an add-on graphics card (similar to a T60p i assume) and this guide will be geared toward this config.

with all due respect to Lenovo, i have found that the less Lenovo software i install the fewer glitches i have and the faster things run. this is often the case for various other hardware vendors that supply proprietary software which is often not needed, or not all of which is needed.

* a windows xp/vista installation disk. though you may be able to do this using your i386 directory (perhaps on the recovery partition), a full, non-OEM disk is preferred.

in the case of my thinkpad my hard drive will not be recognized by windows unless i integrate the driver for the SATA controller using nLite OR enter BIOS setup and put the controller in compatibility mode so i can install the driver from windows (after which BIOS needs to be changed again). integrating drivers will require extra reading on your part and is beyond what i wish to get into here, so, to make things easy if you're not comfortable doing this, just put your controller in compatibility mode if necessary and install the driver from within windows.
* following the wizard and hitting "next" as necessary, if you've selected the options above, nLite will pop-up a compatibility options window where you want to select what components you really need (prevents you from removing dependancies later).

as should be apparent from the above, security is already enhanced since many attack vectors were removed (OE, WMP, MSN, remote registry, system restore, etc., etc., etc.).

* for the "unattended setup" step, you can select many options, change default paths (Program Files), disable hibernate, configure network adapters and much more.
* next is "options" where you are presented with many more choices.
* next is "patches". here i would highly suggest turning off SFC (windows file protection) as this is an incredible annoyance for many people and will greatly increase the time required for your installation. furthermore, malicious folks and vendors that write drivers know how to get around this nonsense anyway.
* next is "tweaks" and then you'll finish up by building your installation. i typically cut the size of a default windows xp install by about 50%, but i'm a bit agressive with what i remove. also some of that space is used by 3rd party software to replace the components removed.
* if you are comfortable with virtual machine software, that'd be the way to test your shiny new installation ISO. if not, then get ready to take the plunge
when installed an nLite OS on my thinkpad for the first time (a day or 2 after i got it), i did a test install first - i kept the recovery partition in tact. once i got comfortable with installing the drivers and got everything working, i un-hid and formatted the recovery partition -- gone! you may want to do the same, though speaking from expierence i can tell you that it's rather trivial to get everything working on my T60 (though i do not have nor did i want a fingerprint reader, i would doubt it would be an issue to get working).
* once windows is up and running, there will be allot of broken stuff
some of the "Fn" keys will not work, some will (because the hardware is configured in BIOS). you'll need to install the drivers for the items that you want to work, and this is another area where i depart from the norm. here's some things i don't install and the reasons why (whenever possible, any hardware below is disabled in BIOS or device manager):
* easy eject utility - not needed/i don't use it anyway
* hotkey driver - bloated and sometimes buggy software that may corrupt OGL and DX full-screen display (games) and cause stop errors (BSOD)
* trackpoint - i don't use it, though it works anyway with limited functionality if not disabled in BIOS/device manager
* trusted platform module - yeah, well i don't trust it
* away manager - don't use it/lighter weight alternitives available
* keyboard customizer - not needed/i don't use it
* scroll lock indicator - not needed/i don't use it
* software installer - bloated mess/not needed (subscribe to the Lenovo RSS feed to be made aware of updates)
* thinkpad configuration package - i'll configure it myself, thanks
* thinkvantage access connectkions - bloated mess/slows boot time/not needed (better and lighter weight alternitives * available if you need this functionality)
* ultra-nav wizard - not needed
* bluetooth - i install the microsoft bluetooth stack (which is smaller and simpler) and have noticably less lag with bluetooth devices resuming from a standby state (mouse in particular)
* display drivers - i use the highly acclaimed and optimized Omega drivers.
for the drivers i do install, i install only the drivers, NOT the software (in other words i do not run the installer). i do this by extracting the installer using IZArc or Universal Extractor and using device manager to point the hardware to the extracted *.inf files. for me, there is only one device that comes up "unknown device" before drivers are installed (i forget which). the rest are named, so it's easy to tell what path to give them for the drivers. installing drivers for the unknown device is then simple a process of elimination, or you can use software to help identify the device.

I already see flaws, like turning off remote registry for example. Remote registry only has very limited access, and you can change the access, but why would you? You can see what it has access to by going into Control Panel > Administative Tools > Local Security Policy > > Local Polices > Security Options, then scroll a little more than half-way, and it's under the Network access box.
There are so many crack pot guides out there, that the only good advice is to look where they looked, and if you don't get it, and don't go though all of it, LEAVE IT ALONE! It only makes servicing the box at a later time a HUGE pain, and if it's in a business, it'll just be reimaged.
Keep this guy's disclaimer in mind at all times. Just do the easy ones to start, like run CCleaner, it basically does everything for you, and doesn't cause any errors (or as far as I know, and I use it just about every other day)

Windows 8.1 Bootcamp External Mic stopped registering

Im using Windows 8.1 installed on my macbook through bootcamp. Yesterday I booted up Windows to find that the mic on my gaming headset is no longer being recognized, according to my laptop it doesnt even exist. I have spent all day looking for fixes, and it worked fine before. I am using the combined jack that MacBooks have, combining audio and microphone. The microphone still works fine on iOS, and i also tried my apple headphones with the microphone and had the same response.
Reinstalled all drivers.
Headphones are set as default device.
All drivers associated have been updated.
I even did a fresh install of Windows, which fixed nothing.
Please help!!!!

Your headphone port is a combined analog/optical port. The faint red-light indicates that the microswitch which controls the analog v optical output is stuck.
1. You can try a SMC reset - Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
2. You can plug the headphone jack gently a couple of times, which should release the microswitch, and the red light should turn off.
3. Do you get audio from your internal speakers? Please also see Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs - Apple Support. This has the bit about the red light.
If the Internal Speakers option does not appear in the Output tab and your computer is not a Mac Pro, check that Digital Out is present as in the image below:
Confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
Check to see if a red light is lit in the line-out port. If so, your Apple computer may need service.
If you do not see a red light, proceed to step 5.

SMB sharing drops connection in Windows 7/Vista/XP

So interesting tidbit here. Apple Enterprise still hasn't gotten back to me with an answer on this one.
I have file sharing set up, a couple of different folders with some simple permissions. Nothing fancy. All shares work perfect under AFP and SMB on any Mac in the office. However, I have found on both Windows XP/Vista/7, large file transfers seem to drop the connection saying that either the file has changed or it was renamed or something along those lines, basically, it errors out and I can either skip the file or cancel the transfer. I've tested it on multiple machines with all same results. Here's a kicker, I even clean installed Windows 7 on two machines (so I know there are no software/hardware issues or malware) and it will exhibits the same behavior.
Any thoughts? I've done the exact same transfer either via Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi on the Mac using both protocols with no issues. I have a simple network:
Cisco Gb Ethernet Router
Cisco Gb Ethernet Switch (all traffic, including the server and all clients go through this switch, it is an unmanaged switch)
Linksys A/B/G/N WAP
Mac mini running 10.8.2 and 2.2.1 server (has all correct DNS and certificate settings)
The only thing I can think of is perhaps an issue with the PCs (which are 10/100) and the Gb Ethernet? Everything for the server appears to be functioning just fine?

First, thank you for taking the time to respond. The answer to your 2 questions is yes and no, respectively. I've already been on the phone with enterprise support with Apple several times and there is definitely a "known issue" regarding the transfer of large files, and large numbers of files over SMB with mountain lion. The SessTimeout tip definitely helped with the file copy issue, but didn't fix the issue I had of keeping large numbers of files open over the network. With my Windows Home Server, I can open a project with thousands of files in my DAW (digital audio workstation) over the network. But with the files residing on the OS X server, they open but then after several minutes, they literally go offline and "disappear". It's very frustrating. I should state that I did buy and install Dave 10 and that fixed the problem, so the problem is definitely on the Apple OS side, I was just hoping that this workaround with the SessTimeout would allow me to go back to Apple's SMB implementation. It just "feels" better to use the Server's implementation rather than a 3rd party app on top of it. Plus, it should just work. Maybe Mavericks will fix it. Maybe.
Just thought you might have another clever workaround that might make this work. At least with this workaround I can save Word and Excel files to the network without it taking 60 seconds.
any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

HHActiveX.dll - Windows Explorer open folders in separate window (Win7/ Vista)

Windows Explorer will open folders in a separate window when you double click them.

Problem:
What we're seeing is, after installing HHActiveX.dll with our product suite on a 32-bit Windows 7 system (and probably Vista also), after rebooting the computer, Windows Explorer will open folders in a separate window when you double click them. This occurs even when Windows Explorer is set to open them in the same window.
Solution:
This seems to have something to do with the registration of actxprxy.dll and/or ieproxy.dll. Reregistering these DLLs and rebooting usually fixes this problem.
This web article mentions side effects in Internet Explorer and a couple of other programs that also come from this.

In Windows 7 (and probably Vista also), the GUID of this library has changed from {B8DA6310-E19B-11D0-933C-00A0C90DCAA9} to {C90250F3-4D7D-4991-9B69-A5C5BC1C2AE6}. Also, the registry entries that are concerned with actxprxy.dll are under HKCR\CLSID\{B8DA6310-E19B-11D0-933C-00A0C90DCAA9}; the last component in that registry path is the old GUID, and that's probably what is causing the problem.
Questions:
The previous approach provides a way to fix the problem by adding some code to reregister the two DLLs at the end of the install. The developer would prefer not to have to add install code to fix this problem in the first place.
1) Is this a known issue with Adobe HHActiveX.dll and Windows 7 / Vista? (I didn't find much with a web search or in Adobe Forums.)
2) Is a newer HHActiveX.dll available to fix this issue?
3) Does Adobe have a fix for the Windows Explorer problem that this DLL is causing in Windows 7 (and probably Vista also).
4) Any suggestions?

Here is what the developer did to fix the issue.
MSI Install: The installer is unregistering actxprxy.dll and ieproxy.dll on Windows 7 32-bit PCs
Problem: The problem was being caused by Adobe's HHActiveX.dll, a DLL that we have to install because of the browse sequences/ glossary in the new application help. This DLL was registering itself against actxprxy.dll using the GUID that was in use prior to Vista; and that in turn caused the Windows Explorer problem, among others.
Fix: Added a custom action that is called after the application is installed (or reinstalled or upgraded) that reregisters the 32-bit actxprxy.dll and ieproxy.dll. (Since the problem doesn't manifest itself on 64-bit systems, the custom action leaves the 64-bit actxprxy.dll and ieproxy.dll as they are.) Rolled back the registry deletions that were done in the Shared - help third party merge module in the previous attempt to fix this bug, as those changes were found to be unnecessary.

For Windows 7 and Windows 8 only_Go to Control Panel, Programs & Features.Select HP Support Assistant and uninstall it. Restart your machine after removing it.

You need to insert the Created CD/DVD or USB drive into the optional drive of the locked computer and reboot it.
Tips: It your computer still boots from hard drive Windows OS, it's necessary for you to change your COMS or BIOS settings to make it boot from CD/DVD or USB drive. 1 The program will ask for the Windows OS hard drive volume. Enter the ID number of the hard drive volume that Windows is installed.
2 The program has detected all the user names of Windows and asks which user name password is to be removed. Enter the ID number for the User Name.
3 The program asks to confirm weather to remove the password or not. Enter "y" (yes) to confirm your action and "n" (no) to deny the action and hit "Enter".
4 The program asks whether to continue to remove passwords for other accounts. Enter "y" to continue and "n" to finish. Eject your USB from your computer first and press any key to restart the computer from Windows. Now you can log in Windows with an empty password (with no password.), just click “Enter” when you login.

If you try to follow the links to the ThinkVantage Active Protection System, you are presented with a document labeled: ThinkVantage Active Protection System for Windows 8 (32-bit) - Laptop or a document labeled: ThinkVantage Active Protection System for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) – Notebook
No reference to Windows XP, VISTA or Windows 7 in the current version of the documents, yet the text file pointed to by the download links states that this driver still supports all the older ThinkPads and is applicable to Windows 7 and VISTA. The text file does say that Windows XP support has been withdrawn with this release, and that XP users should use the previous version. It does not, however, provide a link to any document or mechanism where an XP user can obtain the previous driver.
So, is the document correct, or is the text file correct?
Where is the current driver for VISTA and Windows 7?
When I went to the support sites to see the supporting documents there, I discovered that the ThinkVantage Active Protection entries were gone from the R61, R500 and T500 driver matrices. The only reference I could find to the ThinkVantage Active Protection System was in the above mentioned SOFTWARE link.

So now there are numerous separate entries, but none of them claim to support any 'legacy' machines. Most of the above entries point to the same driver (at present). The puzzling aspect to all this is that if you read the text documents that accompany most of the above driver packages, you will note that the text document claims that the driver supports quite a number of legacy machines. That information just never made it to the web page.
So do I manually update a driver because the text document says it is applicable to my legacy R500, or 'believe' the web page which states that only some current models are supported, but not the R500, T500 or R61.
Very inconsistant and highly unprofessional.

New Ipod touch won't sync with window's vista/itunes 9.2 - help!!

I charged my brand new ipod touch via my computer, have it plugged it into my computer's USB port, and Itunes acknowledges the device in the left hand menu BUT it automatically says "itunes could not connect to the itunes store. The network connection has timed out". The ipod will not sync with my itunes! I tried connection/disconnecting, turning the ipod on and off, and restarting the computer. No luck. What do I need to do? Please help, I was so excited to get the new ipod and now I can't use it! I have window's vista and I don't know anything about how to check or change computer settings that might be preventing the store from opening (it used to open, but I haven't tried in a while and I just downloaded version 9.2 today).

Unable to Start CE 7.1 Server on Windows 7 / Vista OS

Dear All,
I am trying to install CE 7.1 Server (Java Stack) on my personal laptop ( Windows 7 Home Basic, Intell Core i3 processor, 4GB RAM).
In the 1st attempt ,the installation failed on Windows 7 OS due to incompatible OS errors.
So, I installed VMWare 6.5 Workstation, installed Windows Server 2003 OS on it and again tried to install CE 7.1 server on this virtual Windows Server2003 OS.
Though CE Server got installed properly and the portal was running when I tested the portal just after installing the CE Server for the first time, ( i.e. without the System restart) ,
But the CE Server is not getting started after restarting the Windows Server 2003 OS ( through VMWare ) or on system restart.
On Analysis, we observe that jstart.exe process is stopped while other services ( message service and enqueue service ) are running.
( jstart service initially shows Starting... but then goes into a Stopped state ).
I have even tried to install CE Server on another laptop ( Windows Vista , Core 2 Duo Processor )
Here, the CE Server got installed ( no need of VMWare )and even the portal was running when I logged in it immediately after installing the CE server for the first time. ( Without System restart )
But like in previous case , when I tried to start the CE server again( After restarting the PC ), I faced the same problem -- CE server did not start reason being jstart service remained in stopped state.
Is this (jstart service) the main cause for Server not getting started ?
Can we start this service manually ?
Is there any system properties or Windows service which is conflicting with the jstart service ?
Is there any alternative method to install CE Server on Windows 7 / Vista OS ?
Please help ...

Hi Navin,
Please verify the DB service is running. The database service is not set to automatically start so it would not be running when you restarted the server. Go to 'Services' windows application and either start the DB service manually or set it to start automatically.

Windows 7/ Vista Sidebar (Link: http://vista.gallery.microsoft.com/vista/SideBar.aspx?mkt=en-us) can be used to interface with SAP, to show data right on the user's desktop. This allows the user to constantly monitor different SAP values and act accordingly. The parameters which people would like to monitor can be of wide range. For eg., a Basis person may want to monitor SAP system performance, while the business executives may want to know Today's sales.
Example
What I have done here, is to create a similar gadget for Windows Vista, which can talk to a custom SAP BSP, and show data real-time on user's desktop. The example here shows how to monitor SAP system performance.
Creating the BSP
Since sidebar gadgets can show only a small amount of area, you have to design the BSP page, to fit in that small area. Here I have created a BSP page which fits within a 130*185 sq.pixels area. My BSP page is created without the <head> section, just with the <body>.
