Windows 7/vista & macbook pro & external display unrecognized on reboot

Hello,
I have my new macbook pro 13 with an external display, keyboard and mouse connected. With MacOs that's ok, when I reboot the macbook closed the image comes to the external display all the time (booting the system, too).
But when I do the same on windows Vista or seven (I installed both with the same result) I just can't do it. I have to wait windows to be booted, disconnect the minidisplay to vga cable and connect again, and then, it's again recognized.
I don't know why it does not recognize the external display without doing this. Is there any way to do it?

I figured out that you are referring to booting in Windows, and inserting the Snow Leopard DVD, launching the Windows installer. The Boot Camp drivers installer is therein.
I ran this installer, and when I rebooted to Windows, I got a couple BSODs, the display was reset to 640x480, and one time it hung during boot. I managed to view the display adapter driver, and it was blank! I installed the latest NVidia display driver, and it resolved the crashes and hangs, but the external display is still unrecognized when the lid is closed. The best that I can do is to configure dual monitors in the NVidia control panel, and move application windows over to the external display. This isn't useful while the lid is closed because the start menu is located in the MacBook display.

Hi all, new mid-2012 macbook pro non-retina user, I have an PC external display with Microsoft USB wired keyboard and mouse pair (the keyboard and mouse are wireless but connected via a USB desktop receiver) but even when all connected up, shutting the mac lid always turns off external display too and no amount of pressing keys or mouse clicking wakes up the display again. External display only wakes up when I open the lid again. There's also a clicking noise from the mac every time I close the lid with external display connected. Any ideas? I've tried a number of things, wondering possibly if my cheapo (non-Apple) VGA external display to Minidisplayport adaptor is the culprit? Also, everytime I connect the display I have to go to display settings to get it to recognise the external display. I haven't installed any software for the USB mouse and keyboard , the macbook recognises it ok.

    Hi Itsfixed,
It sounds like you are having issues running your MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode (computer closed but awake, connected to an external display). If possible, you may want to see if it behaves as expected when connected to a wired USB keyboard and mouse as outlined in the first section of the article; wireless USB (non-Bluetooth) keyboards may not be recognized by the system the same way for the purposes of running with the display closed.

  • 13 inch Macbook Pro External Display Issues (Fully up to date as of 28th of June)

    Hi,
Basically I 've got a 13" MacBook Pro which I've been trying to get working with a 20" Samsung SyncMaster 2033HD Monitor using the Displayport/Thunderbolt Port to VGA adapter. I've applied every update even the newest ThunderBolt firmware update which was released today (28th of June) and nothing has got it working. As the photo shows the screen has artifacts at the bottom and the monitor knows it's putting out the incorrect resolution, despite the native resolution being selected
I'm tempted to try a DVI adapter but I don't really want to spend even more money without some indication of it being worth while.
    So my questions are:
Is there some way to get the monitor working over VGA that has been discovered by other users?
Has anyone else had success using the DVI adapter where the VGA adapter has failed?
    Thank You

Did you ever fix this. I had a macbook pro, and then upgraded to a new one at the beginning of this year with the
AMD Radeon HD 6750M. I have had nothing but trouble with the display adapter since. The monitor keeps blacking out suddenly, or flickering. I tried using a new display adapter, but the same trouble. I tried  a different Samsung Syncmaster 193T display, but it also has the same problems. I tried a different Samsung crappy VGA monitor, and it wokrs okay. I think the thunder bolt adapter is more tempremental than a dedicated display port, and there is a bad contact.
Looking around for video drivers, but I doubt that will fix it. As a last resort I may get apple to check the port, but for all the hype, I think the adapter was a cost cutting measure, and the DVI was too bulky to accomodate. The quality is worse. I also have an old Powerbook G4, and the build quality on that was great. The product is not getting better, just promoting different stuff to keep the economy rolling in my view.

  • Basic questions about macbook pro + external monitor

    Hi,
I have some very basic questions about using a Macbook Pro + external display. I don't actually have them but need to know how things works.
    So, here they are:
    1) Can I use the external display as the main display?
    2) Will the external display run with its resolution or with that of the mbook pro?
    3) Somewhere I read that you cannot keep the macbook pro open and get the full resolution of the external display. Is that true ?
    4) Is it dangerous to keep the mbook closed while using the external display?
    5) Does the usage of the external display impact on mbook performance?
I know...a lot of questions , but would be nice if someone could help me.
    Thanks.

Hi - I am presently using an external display.
To answer your questions in sequence:
    1. Yes you can use the external display as your main display. The way to enable that mode is to put your MacBook Pro to sleep, attach the external display. Wake up your MBPro with the lid closed and you will see the external display as you main display. You can alternatively set the external to "Mirror" your notebook by using preferences/display.
    2. The external display will run at its resolution although you can adjust and calibrate it using Preferences/Display.
    3. Not true. You get max resolution on both displays. Of course you may have to tweak as mentioned above.
    4. Not at all. I use this mode all the time. Just make sure you initially set up as mentioned above and your LCD on the MBPro will stay off.
    5. I have not seen any performance degradation whatsoever.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to completely remove mac os and install windows 7 on macbook pro with retina display 15 inch

how to completely remove mac os and install windows 7 on macbook pro with retina display 15 inch

There's not much sense in purchasing a Mac to run only Windows on it.  Keep in mind that drivers for Windows are a secondary concern for Apple.  While Windows will typicall run fine, things like power managment are not optimized under Windows (you'll get less time on battery while running Windows).  You will also not be able to install firmware updates.  Firmware updates might be necessary whether you run Windows or OS X as they are updates to the code in your hardware and are not OS-specific.  You must be running OS X in order to install a firmware update.  You can do this even if you boot off of an external drive with OS X installed on it.  At the very least, you should keep just a small partition for OS X on your internal drive.

OK, use Windows 8 in Bootcamp. Be aware that there are no Bootcamp drivers for Windows 8 yet. So you may experiance not only delays but display problems, freezing, crashes and other problems.

It can't be done. If your computer has an internal optical drive, working or not, that is the drive you must use. Only computers such as the Macbook Pro Retina/Macbook Air that have no internal optical drive can install Windows from an external drive.

    Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display hard crashes - not caused by Google Chrome

Hi, all. This is my first time posting on these forums, and it is only due to the unsurpassed amount of frustration I have had with my mbpr. I received it in late August, and it worked great. Yes, I had the waking from sleep problem, but that got fixed in an update and didn't bother me too much. What did bother me was when I started installing my games.
I play a ton of games, I have Steam, Diablo III (which Apple during their keynote said is compatible with the retina display resolution and worked with Apple on making it so), WoW and others. Anytime I play any game, it pretty much crashes and I have not been able to find a single solution.
I have tried disabling graphics switching, installing 3rd party programs to disable graphics switching and uninstalling them again, using an external monitor and the built in retina display, verifying/repairing permissions, setting a cap on the FPS in a game as to not make my laptop hot at all (even crashed with a 30 FPS cap), re-installing OS X Mountain Lion from recovery, resetting the NVRAM...
The computer just locks up, goes into a sound loop (like a record skipping very quickly), and becomes totally unresponsive to anything except a hard reset. On wake, it will always display "Your computer has shut down because of a problem, would you like to open the applications blah blah". Basically asking if I want to start where I left off. It never gives an option to send a report to Apple.
Oh also, it can sometimes crash when it's just remotely warm? For example, when I was re-installing OS X ML from recovery the FIRST time (I did it twice), it crashed mid-installation!
The funny thing is, I have windows 7 installed via Bootcamp. Whenever I play any games on that partition...100% fine. No problems, handles graphics beautifully. Using the OS for anything else such as watching videos, downloading music or movies, using any applications is fine. It just seems to be games (or a very small amount of heat? I'm not sure).
Any suggestions? I'm completely stuck on finding any solutions. My experience with the Apple store has been awful in the past, and going to them with any problem is a last resort for me. In the past, I have been able to solve many problems on my own with enough googling and forum digging.
This, after months, is still unsolvable for me. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.
15" MacBook Pro Retina Display, Mountain Lion 10.8.2, 2.6 ghz i7.
tl;dr: Macbook crashes everytime I play a game or when it gets warm, I'm not sure, help.

Sorry that no one answered your question the first go-round - sometimes these things just slip by us.
Most people would have probably just recommended taking your machine to your local Apple Store.
Which is what you did - and all is well now, I'm assuming?

  • How to get clamshell mode with Windows 7 on Macbook Pro?

    Hi,
I am running Windows 7 on Macbook Pro using bootcamp. In OS-X, I can use this cool clamshell feature wherein after putting the MBP to sleep by closing the lid, as soon as I connect an external keyboard, mouse & monitor, I get the display on the monitor and immediately start using the keyboard & mouse too, converting the laptop instantaneously to a desktop.
I am trying to do the same thing on Windows 7, close the lid of the laptop to put it to sleep, connect my external monitor, mouse & keyboard, but however the laptop never wakes up (even after moving the mouse & pressing keys in the keyboard). I tried several things in Windows 7. Under Power Options, Disabled "selective Suspend of USB", but that did not help. Next, in the "Device Manager", for the "Root USB Hub" & "Generic USB Hub", I tried to set "Allow this device to wake up the computer", under Properties -> Power Management, but that option is grayed out. I tried to experimented with Sleep types like S1, S2, S3, but except for S3, the other two are shown as "not supported by firmware" (using powercfg option in command line). Countless hours wasted on google search to get this working with no success
I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue.
    Thanks,
    Sri

    @mkultraviolent,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
That seems to be a useful workaround, but I do not find the option mentioned in Display/ Nvidia control panel. However, I find an option in the "Power Options" which has a "Do Nothing" option in the combo box to select what "Closing the Lid" does. Is that what u are referring to?
Also, one problem in this approach is, if we do not sleep when the display is closed, that will keep the internal display (laptop's display) running in clamshell mode even after the lid is closed? (which will heat up the laptop badly).
The exact option I am looking for is, while the laptop is in sleep & lid closed state, connecting the external keyboard/mouse/monitor and pressing a key in the keyboard or moving the mouse should wake the computer from sleep. If this happens, the internal display won't be running. I am able to achieve this in OS-X.
In Windows7, I have a workaround by which I can almost achieve this result, wherein, while the laptop is in lid-closed, sleeping state, after connecting the external devices (keyboard/mouse/monitor), I open the laptop's lid for a fraction of second, quickly move my finger over the touchpad & close the lid again. This wakes up the laptop, & while it is waking up, Windows realizes that the lid is closed and that external devices are connected and gets into clamshell mode (I have verified that in this state, the internal display is not running).
This workaround was fine so far, but I got this hengedocks docking station for my macbook, and I am no longer able to use the workaround, because, after plugging my macbook into the docking station, I cannot open the lid. So, the only option is to make Windows7 realize that external devices are connected & wake up on external keyboard stimuli (Hence the question).
If my question is not clear, this video kind of explains what I want to achieve:
