Windows 7 wants to format my HDDR500E04X external hard drive

I've been using a Toshiba HDDR500E04X external hard drive for over a year to back-up files.  Today, I plug it in and Windows 7 tells me I need to format it before use - as if it were a brand new drive.  I've tried unplugging and plugging several times, as well as rebooting the system, but nothing changes.
The drive hasn't been dropped or otherwise mishandled.  Any ideas?  I realize that if I format it now, all data will be lost.
Thanks,
John Z.

  • I want to format a Seagate Expansion External Hard Drive for Mac and PC

I ordered a Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive to use with my new Mac and my old PC (or at least get my photos off of both and put them on the drive).  I thought all HDs could be formatted to use by both, I was able to get a Mac HD to work with my PC in 2008 (but it died). I am reading that this drive is PC only.  I have Parallels and Windows 8 on my Mac if worse comes to worse but I would like all of my computers, real, virtual old and new to be able to access the external drive.  Has anyone encountered this issue before?  What should I format it in? FAT32? If yes, how would I go about that on a Mac.  Or should I just return it?
I'm kind of Mac clueless.  I spent my childhood through college on a Mac but I graduated right when OSX came around and I don't know how to work with the Mac "under the hood" like I did with OS9 and with Windows.  So please talk to me like I am an an adult idiot.
    Thanks!!!!

The optimum choice is to format it ExFAT, but do so on the PC, not the Mac. Alternatively, you can make two partitions - one for the Mac; one for the PC. Partition the drive using GUID when you make the two partitions. Format one using Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Format the other on your PC using NTFS if you won't need to write to it from the OS X side or use ExFAT if you do.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) you will use for Windows from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to MSDOS.
    6. Click on the Erase button.
When you connect the drive to your PC reformat the PC volume to either NTFS or ExFAT.

I want to purchase a two terabyte external hard drive to utilise Time Machine on my new iMac....but which one? Western Digital, Time Capsule, Seagate? Any advice would be most welcome please. Thanks Phil

If you are looking for high quality drives and enclosures I'd recommend these 3:

I use the LaCie's, I've got three connected to my system and a 4th acting as my TM drive on my MacBook Air. Any of the above would be welcome on my desk though.

  • Need to format "free space" of external hard drive for Time Machine

I just recently purchased a MacBook Air and want to set up Time Machine with my external hard drive. I'm migrating from Windows 7 so before purchasing my new Mac, I transferred about 100 GB of data from my PC to my external hard drive that I wanted to keep. The external hard drive has a partition of 100 GB (91 GB used) and 365 GB of "free space". I would like to know how to format that free space so that I can use it with Time Machine but at the same time not lose any of my data on the first partition. I've looked around in the Disk Utility but it doesn't give any options to format the free space.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You should be able to repartition it, but that requires that the HD was formatted with Mac OS X Extended and journaling turned on. All I can suggest is you get another HD or move the 100 GB of stuff to the MBA, erase, reformat, and partition into two pieces, copy the 100 GB stuff back to the HD, and then it's set for TM.

  • Partition / Format - 500 gig Seagate external hard drive

Alright, please correct me if I'm wrong. I just acquired a new 500 gig Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I want to format it so that all the files will be accessible/readable by both PC and Mac. It only needs to be write-able by a Mac (write-able for PC would be nice, but is not essential). I would format it as (option button) "Master Boot Record", correct? Now, also, would I format it Mac OS Extended, or what?
    Thanks

If DU Help->"Partitioning a non-startup disk into several volumes" doesn't give you what you're looking for, then I surely can't help. AFAICT, everything you need is described under the Formatting help section.

  • Formatting a new Lacie External Hard Drive

I bought a 250GB Lacie Porsche external hard drive because I was satisfied with the smooth running 160GB drive I've been using for a couple of years. In the packaging was a note saying that the drive was configured to work with various Windows formats and OS9, and that OSX users should initialize the drive using Disk Utility.
I connected the drive, and erased it, but there was no option for choosing a Mac format for the drive. I tried to back up my iTunes music folder to it, but after 16GB the transfer stopped, and there was an error message saying that my destination drive was full.
Does anyone know how I can correctly initialize the HD so I can use it with my Macs? I'm running a G4 iBook and a first generation (lampstyle) G4 iMac.
    Thanks!

  • How do I change the Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) Format of my Verbatim External Hard Drive

    Good evening.
I have a Verbatim External Hard Drive, currently being used for my Time Machine back-up on my MacBook (Running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8).
I also frequently use a normal Windows laptop (Normal 32-bit OS).
The Hard Drive was formatted to Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) in order for the MacBook to do the Time Machine back-up.
How do I change the fromat of the Hard Drive, as i do not need the Time Machine back-up to be done on the Hard Drive anymore, and I NEED to use the external in both PC's.
Your assistance will be greatly apreciated.

Open Disk Utility, select the external hard drive, select erase, and format it as FAT32. You'll be able to use it with both Mac and Windows.

  • HT1351 I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I saved my iTunes on external hard drive and reinstalled them.  My iTunes no longer recognizes my device - a 5th gen. iPod. I can's synch

I upgraded my Dell computer from Vista to Windows 7.  I saved my iTunes library on an external hard drive.  I somehow managed to erase them from my iPod.  Now my songs won't play on the Dell and my iPod is not "recognized" as a device by my computer.  I have "reset" the iPod by toggling the lock and holding down the menu and center button at once, but still no luck.  How can I get my songs from my Dell back to my iPod?

At a guess you followed the process in HT1364 - iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder which would have moved the media folder to a new path of your choice. This process leaves the library database files back in the original location of <User's Music>\iTunes. Often people assume that all they need is now on the external drive and wipe the internal drive, or discard their old computer, before backing up the all important iTunes folder. If you have a backup of your user's profile folder from before the upgrade the iTunes library folder should be in there somewhere. Restore it to <User's Music> and your original library should pop back into existence. The external drive would need to have the same drive letter that it had previously.
A more effective way to relocate the library is to move the entire iTunes folder to the external drive, then hold down shift when starting iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. You would then choose the file iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder on the external drive. If this is the way you moved the library before then that is how you should now reconnect to it. Changing the media folder in preferences doesn't change which .itl database file is opened, nor does double-clicking on an .itl file directly.
If you no longer have the original .itl file then you will have to build a new library and import the media to it. If you need to do this I would recommend you create a new library at F:\iTunes, then move your existing media folders inside F:\iTunes\iTunes Media before importing. This will avoid the creation of duplicates and make sure the library is in the correct shape going forwards.
If you have an iPod or iOS device my scripts ImportDevicePlaylists and SyncStats may well let you recover ratings, play counts & playlists from the device.
When you've fixed up your libray you should consider getting a second external drive to backup to.

  • Want to point to music on External Hard Drive

I recently had to replace the hard drive on my PC. I have a full backup (including all my music and playlists) of the old hard drive on a WD external hard drive. Is there a way to point the new iTunes installation on my PC to the existing library on the external hard drive (and see the existing playlists as well)?
Preferrably I would like to keep all music on the external hard drive and from now on have new ripped music be placed on it instead of the PC hard drive.
Is this possible? If so, what steps need to be taken?
    Thank you.

Please chekc this article. this is exactly what you want to do:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~smulleke/2004/06/10/index.html#post200406101029
Consolidating your itunes music library will reorganized your music library and if you have it a certain way, it will change that.
The recommendation from this guy also keeps your ratings, playcount and last played information, which may also be important.

  • I want to move pictures to a external hard drive.  How do I do that?

My 150 GB MacBook hard drive is nearly full. I want to move pictures off my hard drive to an external hard drive to access them later.  I bought a 1 TB external hard drive and have time machine set up on my computer.  I am beginning to think that the Time Machine might be over kill as I just want more space on the HD and to have a copy of my files if my MacBook should die suddenly.
I know how to do this on a PC.  It is quite simple.  This mac is a different story.  I can't move pictures from iphoto I can only delete them.  Do I need to go in and copy/paste all of them onto the external HD?

Get a second external drive, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to reformat it as Mac OS Extended(a few drives are preformatted this way), drag the iPhoto library onto it in the Finder, launch iPhoto with the Option key held down, point it there, and then set Time Machine to back that drive up.

  • Just want to backup iTunes on an external hard drive

    Greetings,
I've been working on this for days without success. All I want to do is back up my iTunes on an external hard drive.
Using iTunes 7.6 on an iMac G4; Music resides on an external hard drive. I want to back up to a different external hard drive.
I've tried moving folders, but when I go to test the data, iTunes can't locate songs. I tried the <option> key to redirect. I just tried adjusting preferences to new drive; then I tried "consolidate" ...took forever 90Gigs.
I just can't get everything right on each of the two drives. The folders are different.
Just when I thought I got it working (iTunes operating perfectly from alternate drive) I can't eject the first drive. I want to put one hard drive in a safe place. No other programs using these external drives.
Drive that is working looks like this:
    LaCie
iTunes folder (contains all my artist folders)
    iTunes library (database file)
    iTunes Library.xml
Other drive that I want to dismount:
    Seadisc300
iTunes folder (contains album artwork file, iTunes Library data, iTunes Music Library.xml iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Music folder (artists) plus previous library folders.
Anyone know what files / folders need to be where?
This is frustrating. Any advice most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Mark

1 - iTunes puts music in \iTunes\iTunes music folder by Artist\Album\song.
2 - Dunno why it's there unless you created a new library and selected that location.
    3
When selecting the location under iTunes preferences... does one select a folder or the actual database file inside a folder?
You are not selecting a library. You are selecting a location for the iTunes music folder.
Do I allow iTunes to "organize" after making the adjustment?
I would. This makes iTunes oprganize the songs by Artist\Album\Song based on those fields in the ID3 tags.
    4 - ???
    The default for iTunes is...
    Album artwork folder
    iTunes music folder
    iTunes library file
    iTunes library.xml file
    Maybe a Previous libraries folder.
If you choose to have the music folder located elswhere, it won't be in the iTunes folder.
Just a note: To make it easier to understand, don't mix up terms.
*iTunes music folder* is just that. It's where the music is. It is not the library.
*iTunes library* is what you see when you open iTunes. This info is contained in the *iTunes library.itl* file.
*iTunes library.itl* file is the database used by iTunes for all the info about your library - Songs, movies, podcasts, playlists, ratings, etc.
*iTunes library.xml* is created by iTunes for other apps to access th eiTUnes library. iTunes istelf does not use it.
