Windows 7 with 11g ODBC install confusion...

Hi all,
Ok, I am just a little confused. All I need to do is get ODBC running under Windows 7. I figured this would be easy, but apparently not. I am trying to install Oracle 11g 64 bit on a new Win 7 computer. This is to set up a "typical" end user system and is NOT for development.
I first went to the 11g download page (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/112010-win64soft-094461.html ) and downloaded the client software (win64_11gR2_client.zip). I unzipped and installed that. I was able to run NetAdmin and edit the TNSNAMES.ora file. However, when I ran the MS ODBC manager - there were no Oracle driver options. I tried this with both the InstantClient and Runtime options.
So I figured I had missed something. I ran the deinstall and then did a system restore. I read the docs in the install and here on the forum and saw references to the instant client installs.
It told me to download the Basic Instant Client and ODBC Instant Client packages from the Oracle Technology Network Instant Client page, so I went to link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/winx64soft-089540.html and downloaded both the instant client (instantclient-basic-win-x86-64-11.2.0.1.0.zip) and the ODBC module (instantclient-odbc-win-x86-64-11.2.0.1.0.zip)
I unzipped the client-basic first per the odbc docs. No docs, just a readme with no details. And nothing named install. I did see two .exe files (adrci.exe and genezi.exe) but netiher was a clear install package. Nor was there a .msi package. So, in reading the docs, I tried to determine if "deployed" meant unzipped or installed. So I unzipped the instant ODBC files into the instantclient_11_2 folder and ran the ODBC_install. There was no reference to NETADMIN in the startfolder, but there was an ODBC shortcut - which I ran. It showed the ODBC drivers, but when I got to the TNS Service Name and clicked on the "down arrow", all I saw were what appeared to be garbage entries. There was no TNSNAMES.ora file to be found.
Ok, so now I reinstalled the initial download and then tried to add the ODBC stuff to that.... No luck.
I Ran the universal installer and tried to get it to load the ODBC stuff - but there were no .xml files (which is what it apparently wants) to load. And when I tried to install the instant ODBC, the universal installer still didn't appear to see ODBC stuff...
So I can install the first and be able to edit TNSNAMES.ORA. Or install the second and see an ODBC driver - but not configure it because I can't reference a TNSNAMES.ora file. Or do both and just get frustrated because both installs IGNORE the other....
Oh, if I run the NetAdmin and create a TNSNAMES entry - when I test it, it can connect to the server. But I just can't get the ODBC Oracle driver to find that file.....
IAC, what do I need to download (just the minimum oracle 11g) to an end user's win 7 x64 computer so that I can configure the TNSNAMES.ora settings and setup the ODBC connection?
Anyway, I am sure there is an easy answer to this. And I would be happy to mark your response as an answer so you get the credit you deserve for helping me.
And it would be even nicer if there was a little more support about ODBC in the docs that come with both the standard client and the instant client installs.
Thanks,
JustMe

Greg,
RE: Instant client.
1) It did not come with a TNSNAMES.ora file nor was it clear where I would place the one I have so it would work.
2) I did try enter a valid entry, but it would not work (my guess is that I didn't copy the TNSNAMES.ora to the right folder).
RE: Standard install:
1) It installed the TNSNAMES.ora file and apps to manage it. I was even able to test and confirm that it worked. But when I ran the MS ODBC manager, there were no references to the ORACLE drivers, so I couldn't create one to reference the TNSNAMES.ora file I had created.
You have given me a few ideas and I will try some of them (running the standard install option in custom mode, copying the TNSNAMES.ora file to every folder in the instant client install, using just the 32 bit versions, etc.) If any of those work, I will report back. If you have any idea on how to resolve the above issues, I would certainly appreciate it as well.
Thanks,
JustMe

  • Oracle 10g client with 11g ODBC.

We have the Oracle 10g client on users PCs to use the 10g ODBC to connect to a 10g (10.2.0.4.0) database. Now we are upgrading to an Oracle 11g database, 11.2.0.3.0. Is it possible to install the 11g ODBC drivers onto the users PCs without installing the full Oracle 11g client?

Unless you want to go down the Instant Client path, no.
However, there is probably no need to do anything to the clients. Any version of the 10g client should have no difficulty communicating with an 11.2 database. There is likely no need to upgrade the existing clients when the database is upgraded. The only exception would be if your application is trying to use some 11.2 feature that requires changes on the client to support-- those are pretty rare in this instance.
You may want to roll out 11.2 clients on new machines as they come online but that's likely about all that you need to do.

  • ODM client not bundled with 11g client install?

    All,
Our 10g Oracle Client install includes the Oracle Directory Manager.
We just installed the Administration version of the 11g client and I don't see ODM there.
Can someone verify that ODM is not bundled with the 11g client?
If it is bundled, how do I run it? The 11g Installer did not give me a menu item for it.
    Thanks,

  • ISE Condition Windows with Latest Patch Installed

    Hello,
I want to comply all the domain computer with latest windows Patch Installed. How we can create this condition under which catagry as mentioned below?
    Thanks.

    Case Solution:
You can deploy domain computer with latest windows Patch  Installed with Configuring WSUS Remediation.
This example shows how to ensure that all employee computers  with Windows 7 have the latest critical
Patches installed. Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) are  internally managed.
Define a posture remediation action that checks for and  installs the latest Windows 7 patches.
    1. Navigate to Policy > Policy Elements > Results,  and expand the Posture folder.
    2. Expand the contents of Remediation Actions.
Select Windows Server Update Remediation, and click Add from the right−hand pane menu.
Enter these values, and click Submit:
    Attribute Value
    Name Install_Win_Critical_Updates
Description Check and Install missing Critical Windows Updates
    Remediation Type Manual
Validate Windows Updates using Severity Level
    Windows Updates Severity Level Critical
Windows Updates Installation Source Managed Server
Installation Wizard Interface Setting Show UI
Note: If you want to use Cisco rules in order to  validate Windows update, create your posture
Conditions, and define your conditions in Step 2.
    2. Click Save when finished.
Note: If a preconfigured condition does not  display under the list of conditions, verify that the appropriate OS has  been selected for both the condition as well as the requirement rule.  Only conditions that are the same or are a subset of the OS selected for  the rule display in the conditions selection list.
Please check below  which may be helpful for you.

  • Safari 5 for windows with multiple extensions installed crashing

I installed Safari 5 on my Windows PC running XP PRO with SP3 ; I also had Firefox installed and was using multiple extensions and add ons there. After using Safari 5 for a day or so I installed a number of extensions. Two were also installed on Firefox; Feedly and LastPass; no idea if this has anything to do with anything.
Shortly after this I started having problems with both Firefox and Safari crashing. Eventually uninstalled Firefox until I got Safari stable but I haven't been able to do that . It's still crashing every 30 " or so, sometimes more often. The error message says "Safari has encountered an unexpected difficulty and needs to close." When I click on the "Details" link it says Error Signature App name Safari.exe
    ModVer 5.33.17.8
    Offset 00111fb61
Can anyone give me some advice? I hate to uninstall the extensions only to find out that's not the problem.
    Thanks

Apologies, Kathleen, but do you mind if I stash links to extension-related problems here? (Will stop If you rather I didn't.)
MareksGreg here was getting symptoms that sounded a bit like Hedi's (Flash not working):
10 minutes earlier I was thinking about this and I tried to uninstall 2 of 3 extensions I got.
I uninstalled "Sessions" and "Awesome Screenshots". And it worked.
I think that the update for extensions I did last week occurred this problem not the extensions themselves.
Now I installed both of extensions back and everything is alright, like ebfore.
It looks like an extension-related problem is likely to cause a user-account-specific problem too.

I have no idea where to properly submit this issue. Hope I do not abuse this forum for too much.
Jdeveloper 11g cannot be installed on Windows with Thai regional settings configuration.
I've got "A fatal error has occurred. This application will terminate" error dialog, while installing.
I have to change my regional settings to English then install it and change my setting back later.

Sigh... This forum software doesn't even support image posting.
The error is every easy to reproduce.
    1. On Windows XP, goto "Control Panel" -> "Regional and Language Options" -> "Standards and format"; and change that to "Thai"
    2. Invoke "jdevstudio11110install.exe"
    3. Always click "Next" until the error dialog appear.

For windows, first step ensure the services got created.
Start/Run/services.msc and click on the Standard tab (for slightly less clutter).
There should be 4 or 5 oracle entries, only two matter. The database instance service, ...ServiceXE and the listener ...TNSListener the others are not relevant for an XE install.
If the user that ran the installer program is not in the local administrators group, as stated in the install requirements documentation, more than likely the services did not get set up and the database won't exist.
If the services are there, try connecting and check the instance status. In a command box (Start/Run/cmd):
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect system
Password: <the system password entered in installer dialog ... >
    ... Connected.
    select status from v$instance;
    ... OPEN ...
If you get that far, might be something not quite right with the networking configuration, several things can prevent the Apex web pages (http://...:8080...) from working.
As far as your configuration files, the client (tnsnames.ora) has a different value for the host than your listener.ora. So one, or both, of those could be incorrect. Check the command box hostname output, ipconfig /all, a few things might need adjustment.
The tnsnames.ora only matters for making sqlnet connections via a tnsalias. The tnsalias could be anywhere, including on your local hostname. To use a tnsalias, add it to the a connect after the '@' symbol, i.e. connect system@xe to get a connection to your XE specified in the tnsnames.ora file.
If you want to change the listener configuration, the first thing to do is stop the listener, then make adjustments in the listener.ora, start the listener, and sqlplus ... connect system .... alter system register; to get the instance registered with the listener.

We are migrating our database and applications to 11g database and imbeded Application Express. Our current configuration is 10g database and JSPs running under the OC4J installed with the database. Our develoment server is running Windows XP and currently has 11g database 11.1.0.6.0 installed, and the Application Express configured and running properly.
In order to provide a smooth transiition from OC4J to Application Express, we would like to continue to run some applications under the OC4J installed with the 11g database, and the converted applications in Application Express, all on the same server and same 11g database installation.
I have started the OC4J processes on the development server with the script:
    cd \Oracle\Ora11g\Ora11gDB\oc4j\j2ee\home

I understand the 11g OC4J standalone has been discontinued, however it looks like the 11g version I have installed is using the OC4J 10.1.3.0.0.
So is the OC4J installed with 11g not functional, or am I missing a step in the startup/configuration, or URL call.
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the replay Michael,
Actually, on the development server I only have the 11g database installed with Application Express configured. The Apex runs on port 8080 and I see that in the netstat -ab listing, but I do not see port 8888 referenced anywhere. All the config files for the OC4J are standard from the db install. The port listed in the http-web-site.xml still shows 8888.
Is it possible that the OC4J is not completing it's startup?
The server.log, and the system-applicaiton.log both show entries indicating it has started, and the global-application.log shows it is started, however the defaultWebApp is not currently started. Here is the complete contents of that file:

  • Installing 10.1.3.1 (want to upgrade to 10.1.3.4) with 11g Database

I want to install SOA Suite 10.1.3.4 on a new laptop I have. I have ins
I checked the certification matrix and saw that SOA Suite was certified with 11.0.6 version of the Database so I installed the 11g database no problem and went to install the SOA SUite 10.1.3.1 last night (would then patch up to 10.1.3.4 afterwards).
I choose Advanced Install, as I want to put the schemas in my 11g database but when I put in my connection details for the DB a window pops up saying that it must be installed on the correct version of the DB, it lists a load of them but 11g is not one of them (10.2 series was the highest).
So 10.1.3.4 is certified with 11g but you can do the base install on 11g, Is this correct?
    Are there any workarounds?
I assume one option is to do a Standard Install where it creates the XE database, then patch up to 10.1.3.4.
Then some how point everthing to my 11g DB afterwards.
    Any ideas?
    Stuart

just found the solution. One needs to follow patch instructions 6265268 even before starting installation to replace the relevant jar files in the installable.

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...
