Windows 7 with latest AirPort Extreme

I have just bought the latest AirPort Extreme. Set-up using airport utility on all my apple products worked like a charm. I then installed airport utility and updated it in my old windows 7 laptop.
- airport utility on windows 7 cannot detect the wifi network
- windows 7 can however see the wifi network when I go to network properties, but it cannot connect to it
- I tried shifting the AirPort Extreme from WPA 2 to no security, and windows 7 still cannot connect nor is airport utility finding the network
- I tried changing the channel on the AirPort Extreme to channel 11, still nothing
My old laptop on windows 7 has a b/g wireless card. I am afraid the AirPort Extreme is not compatible with b/g, or if it is, do I have to set it to it, and if so where?
Any other tips as to what I could change in the settings of the AirPort Extreme or windows 7 to either have airport utility see and connect to the network, or connect through windows 7 network properties?
Thanks
Philippe

On one of your Macs, run the utility, select your base station and click the edit button. Select the wireless tab,
Then click the Wireless Options button
Pick Radio Mode and see what works best for all your systems.
Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo 2 with latest Airport Extreme?

Since I'm having disconnection issues with my older Airport Extreme G router, I am considering getting the N version. Will it solve the issues I'm currently having with the Macbook Pro? Will I be able to connect to the 5 GHz band?

The answer is that the connection of my Macbook Pro, although not perfect, is more stable with the newest Airport Extreme N Router than with my old Airport Extreme G router. In the 5 GHz band anyway, which is the one I've been using for about a week now.

Use system profiler to identify which iMac you have
exactly. If your iMac has USB 2.0, then I think you
can only fit Airport Extreme anyway.
I have a question too ... I'm about to fit an Airport
Extreme extreme card to my 15 inch USB 2.0 iMac too.
Is the aerial already built in? I presume one is
    required in some form?
James--I'm afraid that your link doesn't help me. I'd already seen that, and found that my iMac seems to correspond to two different categories--being both a 17-inch flat panel, and a 17-inch 1GHz. According to Duane's post, iMacs with clock speeds of 1 GHz or greater take the Airport Extreme card. According to two different individuals at a local Apple Store, I got two answers. One said Extreme, the other said, nope, the old Airport. How do I determine the "for sure" answer? Anybody know?
FWIW, here's my sys profile info:

  • Help setting up Open DNS with new airport extreme

I cant seem to get Open DNS to work with a new airport extreme. The status says I am not using Open DNS and its not filtering anything. I have followed the exact steps for set up listed on their website, checked the dns settings, cleared both caches and restarted the computer, modem and router with no success. I set the airport up in bridged mode, although I tried the other option under setup, but not sure what I was doing? I picked up this router because I wanted easy set up and the apple store assured me it would work with Open DNS. Oh, and I also downloaded the latest firmware update on the router. Can anyone help me with the settings or what else I need to check?

Sorry, I am not familiar with this product, so I checked online to pick up some information.  Here I am referring to the information found here:
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6096
I found that your device is mentioned as follows in the intro under Section 1 of this document:
The BellSouth supplied Westell 2100, 2200 and 6100 models (Models A90-210030-04, B90-220030-04, and B90-610030-06/C90-610030-06, respectively) share many features and functions.
Next, I am referring to the information under Section 2, under the heading of Standard Default Mode Connection (separate hub or switch present).  Unless you have changed the configuration on the Westell, this is how your device is operating. In this mode, the Westell device is acting both as a modem and router in one unit.
So, an attached router (AirPort Extreme) must be configured as a switch to work correctly. That is what Bridge Mode is....the AirPort Extreme is operating as a switch when it is in Bridge Mode (which would be the correct setting to use when the Westell is set to its Standard Default Mode).
Any changes that you want to make regarding DNS settings would need to be made on the Westell device, since it is acting as the main router on your network.
In Bridge Mode, the AirPort Extreme simply passes that information through to its connected devices. You will not be able to make any DNS related changes on the AirPort Extreme since it receives that info from the Westel device. Some service providers force you to use their DNS servers, so you might want to check with Bell South or AT&T for more information in this regard.
If you want to be able to configure the AirPort Extreme as the main router on your network, and instruct it to use the DNS information that you want, you will need to refer to the section under the heading of Bridged Ethernet Mode ( separate router present).
Please note that the first item under this heading specifies that "This is the preferred configuration when using a separate external router..." (which would be the AirPort Extreme in your case)
So, it appears to me that this would be the way that you must reconfigure the Westell device to allow the AirPort Extreme to function as the "main" router on your network. In this type of setup, you will be able to enter the DNS information that you want to use under the setup for the AirPort Extreme and it will act as you instruct.
The AirPort Extreme would not be configured in Bridge Mode for this....it would be configured to "Share a public IP address".
The next item in the article specifies that you "Must use a PPPoE client on the Router." This means that the AirPort Extreme would be configured to Connect Using = PPPoE as follows:
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = PPPoE
You would enter your user name (probably your email address), password, etc in this area. Leave the Service Area box completely blank. Set Connection to Always On, and Disconnect if Idle to Never
Click Update to save the new settings. Power off the Westell device after this and then restart it so that it will pick up the new information that you have programmed into the AirPort Extreme.
I want to stress that this is how I would try to configure the Westell and AirPort Extreme. But, as I said, have not used a Westell device, so I cannot say that this will work correctly for you.
It might be an excellent idea to contact Bell South or AT&T Support to ask for their opinion on this before you decide to change the configuration of the Westel device and the AirPort Extreme.
This type of thing can be intimidating for users, so you might elect to use the services of someone like the Geek Squad at Best Buy, or a similar service from a local computer firm. Perhaps the Apple store could help as well.
If it is not critical that you use Open DNS, you might want to simply leave things "as is", with the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode.

  • How do I use existing TM backup with upgraded Airport Extreme?

I replaced my old Airport Extreme with a dual-band Airport Extreme. I was previously using an external drive connected to the old AE for Time Machine backups. I now have everything set up, I can see the drive on the new AE in the Finder and select it in Time Machine preferences, but it doesn't show "Oldest Backup" "Latest Backup" information and I fear it's going to try to create a new backup when it runs. How can I get it to use and add to the existing backup?

No, it won't show that until a backup is done. See #B3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

It should just do an incremental backup.

But, you need to know, backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Existing files on drive connected to latest Airport Extreme do not show up, however files copied over the air to the drive do. Any ideas?

I have the latest Airport Extreme with a Seagate drive connected. I copied files to the drive while it was connected to my MacBook Pro. The files do not show up when connected to the AE, but they appear when connected to the Macbook, Files copied over the network to the drive appear. The drive is formatted HFS+.

After playing with this for the last few days, I found a solution. Under the "Disks" tab in Airport Utility, the "Secure Shared Disks" drop down needs to be set to "With device password". Mine was set to "With acounts", which even after correct authentication, none of the files would appear.
Another interesting note:  The files that I could see, the ones I copied over the network, do not appear now. I can copy over new files, and they show up, but the ones copied prior to changing the "Secure Shared Disks" option, do not.

  • Speed problems with new Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I just bought the latest Airport Extreme, and am using it as my router directly from my internet provider, a hole in the wall, with a normal cable between.
If I hook the cable right to my computer I get between 500-800 Mbit speed, all the time, rock solid, so my internet connection is very good!
Now, when I hook it up to my new AE, it works fine most of the time, or let's say 70% of the time. The other 30% the speed drops down to roughly 20-50 Mbit from the normal 250-400 speed when using the AE. Itäs not only that the speed drops, all my streaming devices stop working. I have three wireless speakers and an Apple TV. Normally it all works fine... but suddenly they all stop working, and that is when the router (AE) drops in speed.
Sometimes I have to plugg the plug on the AE, to restart it, and it works fine agaian, but sometimes ther's nothing to do.
It feels very strange that you one minute can have 400+ Mbit and then sudenly down to 20, and then back again...without doing anything at all in your apartment with your devices. I run on the 7.7.2 firmware...
    Any clues?

I've got a similar sounding issue except when it happens to mine, it stays super slow until I reboot the AE. Not just changes some settings and let it update/refresh, I have to power cycle it. My internet connection isn't quite as fast as yours but it still should be a lot faster than what it is when this starts.
I have a 30Mbit connection. After power cycling the AE, it runs fine for several days. Then at some point, it gets extremely slow. Trying to load any web page takes roughly 30-45 seconds sometimes before it really seems like it starts getting a response from the server and starts downloading the page. I've tried a few pings and the requests continually time out for a while and then it will finally pick up and work.
I'm not real sure what to do about it. I'm wondering if the newest firmware upgrade has anything to do with it. I didn't see this issue until after updating to 7.7.2. May be completely unrelated but thats the only thing I can think of that has changed lately.

  • Problems with new airport extreme

i'm a network admin who has dealt with seemingly every network problem imaginable over the last 15 years, but this one has me stumped.  really hoping someone can help me see the forest for the trees on this one.
the problem started last week when i decided to upgrade to the latest airport extreme - replacing my MB763LL/A.  In my previous setup I also had an Airport Express on the network that I was using for the 18th stereo jack connected to a stero.  the airport express has been unplugged and while it'd be nice to have it working again, i'm not terribly concerned about it at this point.
the extreme has two devices plugged directly into it - an iMac and a sony blu-ray and they both work great.
the wireless is where the problem exists.  i thought originally this was the same old 2.4ghz/5.0ghz issue with 802.11n and iPhones, but that doesn't seem to be the case - or i am just really missing something in regards to it.
currently the airport extreme is setup as follows:
    - create wireless network
    - allow this network to be extrended is NOT checked
    - radio mode: 802.11n only (5ghz) - 802.11b/g
    - wireless security: WPA2 Personal
    - seperate 5Ghz network name is specified under wireless network options.
    - currently i have a guest network setup with no security (more to come on this later)
i have an iPad that connects to the 5Ghz wifi and works great and likewise an older dell laptop and a wireless security camera (both 802.11g) work great.
the problem is my wife's iphone (3gs) and mine (iphone4).   if i connect them to the unsecured guest network they work great.  unfortunately this is a bit of a pain as we use airplay and some other pieces regularly.  when i connect to the WPA2 network it will connect, work fine for a couple minutes and then i start receiving timeouts to both the internet as well as anything else on my network.  one interesting thing i've noticed is in the airport utility you can see them connect in the wireless client screen, but over the few minutes the rate will fall from 54 down to 1.
i've gone as far as completely restoring the phones to factory original state and reconfigured them manually - skipping the option to restore previous backups.
i've tried various options for the radio mode and this problem persists.  my understanding is that in the current mode the iphones won't see the 802.11n since it's a separate 5Ghz SSID and therefore connect via 802.11g.  I've tried WPA/WPA2 for the security and that doesn't seem to matter either.
is it possible this airport extreme is a dud?  any other suggetions?  please let me know if i ommited and details.
    any help is REALLY appreciate.

I seem to have the same problem you had. iPad, MacBook Air, and iTouch all connect to my airport extreme without an issue all the time. But my wife's iPhone 4s and now my Kindle Fire can't connect except once in a blue moon. Sometimes they see the network, sometimes they don't even if I am right beside the base station. I did the upgrade and things worked for about a day but now the same issue. Am configured like you but found disabling security doesn't guarantee reliable connections either. Very frustrated!!

  • Trouble connecting Windows 2000 PC to Airport Extreme

I'm having trouble connecting a PC running Windows 2000 to my Airport Extreme Base Station. The PC is using a D-Link wireless USB 2.0 adapter (802.11g) to connect to the internet. The PC would connect without problem when I was using a D-Link wireless router but will not connect with the new Apple base station.
In addition to the Windows 2000 PC I have a Windows XP PC (connected via ethernet), an iBook G4 and an Epson printer connected to the Airport Extreme and they all work without a problem.
Can anyone tell me how to solve my problem with the Windows 2000 machine?
    Thanks.

I am having the same issue; since you did not seem to receive any replies on this forum, am wondering if you resolved the problem; am also wondering if my issue is the distance from my Airport Extreme base to the Windows PC. My next step is going to be to try moving the Apple router closer to the Windows PC and see if that Linksys wireless picks up the signal.

  • WHY is my iMac so SLOW with my Airport Extreme?!?!?

I have an iMac G5 and an Airport  Extreme base station.  I just opened Safari on the iMac and in the time it took for it to open the Apple home page I was able to go to my backpack, dig out my HP Netbook, turn it on, log in to Windows, open Safari, and navigate all the way to this page and start typing... and my iMac is STILL trying to load the Apple home page... WHY, APPLE? WHY?? I love my iMac, why won't it work with my Airport Extreme? Everything else I have works fine, in the same locations, and the iMac worked fine when I had a Belkin router... ever since I got this Airport Extreme the iMac has turned into a big white web-surfing glacier.  ...Whats's the deal?

    Hi,
If you have three or four bars of signal in from the airport it is probably related to the internet cache and not your Airport. But, I also noticed you are using Leopard (the Vista of OSX). Install Onyx and run Automation. Make sure you selct the internet cache in the settings window.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard. It is 30 bucks well spent. Leopard is a monster! Also, as much as I am a macaholic, Google Chrome is a much better browser than Safari.

  • Urgent Problems with my Airport Extreme

I purchased a latest airport extreme recently. Works perfect for several weeks.
Suddenly, from yesterday, the Internet speed where slightly distant from Airport becomes very slow which usually do very well. I just had to get to very close to the Airport to get the Internet speed. So I decided to factory reset the Airport. Works well until last step. The airport utility shows unexpected error when I finished configuration.
Right now, the airport shows green light but I cannot find it on any device or any airport utility!!!
    Need help!!!

I will assume that you have already tried different Ethernet patch cables and tried this on all of your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) LAN ports and the problem continued ... correct?
If so, the problem may be the MTU setting on both of your Macs. The AEBSn, with Gigabit Ethernet, uses a Broadcom controller chip that supports Jumbo Frames. By default, both of your Macs should sense the type of Ethernet connection they have, but typically default the MTU to a "safe" 1500 byte value. Any value above this would be considered "Jumbo" and the controller chip in the AEBSn can support Jumbo Frames up to 9728 bytes.
I would recommend that you try changing the MTU value on both Macs to "Jumbo (9000)" to see if this will help.
    To do so:
System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > Advanced > Ethernet tab
    Configure: Manually
    Speed: 1000baseT
    Duplex: full-duplex, flow-control
    MTU: Jumbo (9000)
Be sure to do this on both Macs, and then, try to copy at least a single 1 GB file between them, either direction. To quickly create this file, just use the Disk Utility to create a 1 GB disk image.
    Please post back your results.

  • Can I save windows 7 file into Airport Extreme's USB HDD

    Hi,

Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+ is supported, as well as FAT16 and FAT32.

  • Guest Network not working in latest Airport Extreme

Just bought the latest Airport Extreme (802.11ac), and want to enable the Guest Network.
    - Installed latest firmware
    - Set Airport in Bridge Mode
    - Enabled Wireless Network
    - Enabled Guest Network
There is no connecting to Guest Network (iphone) and if possible (macbook) there is no internet.
With a previous version of Time Capsule, the Guest Network in the same setting worked like a charm.
Anybody seen this before or is the Airport Extreme working different than a Time Capsule?

According to the theory what you are saying about the A1355 is not possible.. ie there is no guest in bridge.. I have tested it and can assure you it did NOT work.. it fooled me into thinking it should and I spent many hours working on it.. our forum expert here.. Bob Timmons set me straight.
Now I am always a believer in voodoo and gremlins and maybe the tooth fairy when it comes to wireless.. it is about 80% of the above and 20% science.. so please do the test again and see if it is possible.. but I can assure you.. apple have set guest network to off in bridge.
There are ways around it.. complicated methods. ie if you extend wireless to your TC.. from another apple router where the router is on, then guest can be used. You can also use a managed switch to set vlans for the guest.
See the following which I used to research this topic.

  • Latest airport extreme noise issues

Just received the latest Airport Extreme.  Worked perfectly for 2 days and still does.  But, started emitting the noise that others have described, sort of like the static or popping from an old radio.  However, continued to work normally. Noise lasted for about an hour and nobody was using the network. It has been quiet now for about a day.  The unit continues to perform normally. Are there any other recent updates on this issue?

No, it is not common.. but anything with internal power supply will occasionally have a loose inductor.. with your 50 or 60hz mains buzzing through it.. a loose winding can make strange noises.. some caps can also make noises.. the incoming AC is rectified to 300-400v DC is a lot of volts and stresses a poor component. There is also a mechanical fan.. and fans are also a source of all kinds of noises. I would say this is entirely a hardware fault and has nothing to do with firmware.. so it is not going to be updated. It is simply going to need replacement.
If it starts again.. in fact I would power off the AE overnight.. and power up cold the next morning.. and do that every night for the next week.. if it ever does it again.. return immediately to apple for replacement.. The build quality of the AE and TC is less than spectacular.. my first new AC model Time Capsule lasted less than a week. Replacement is fine.

  • Can't see USB disk drive from my Windows PC on my Airport Extreme

How do I configure the windows setting on my Airport Extreme so my Windows users can access it?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>
