Windows 7 won't boot up
I was having trouble with audio ads. So I deleted the svchost.ext file. but I then suspended the Dcom file associated to it.
Because of all of this, my computer will not boot up into windows. I can get into safe mode but that won't start up into windows either.
Can someone help me.
Thanks,
bdmc200
A Major problem I've occurred in the past was just getting Windows (XP/ME/98), etc. to go back onto the drive after a former operating system was in place. I've solved the problem in the past by using the manufacturer's diskette or CD (you can download
it from their websites and burn it to a CD/disc/disk/flashdrive). Western Digital (which uses Data Lifeguard Diagnostics in DOWNLOADS/Seagate and others which has diagnostic software free from their site) and has a "bootable" solution
set of files within that when booted to LOW-LEVEL format (that is, buring "0"'s and "1"'s to the drive, hence erasing everything down to the core level, whereas it's destructive to even remove hidden and boot-level info back to the condition when the drive
was first created, pristine state).
After it low-level formats, one can either high-level (format) it, or run Windows on CD, etc. to install Windows back. The premise was that one can place a specific operating system on the former condition drive and by installing a different one (ex.
32bit to 54 bit, or in 98, etc, difference operation layers which tend to cause changes/upgrades going forward to fail.
This has worked for me on numerous occasions and I was able to put any Windows (provided it's supported by the BIOS or operating system met the system requirements (RAM, etc).
Always good to know.

Windows won't boot with Virtualization Techonology enabled
My Windows won't boot if I enable Virtualization Technology. I've read the other forums and have tried to both disable and update the Bluetooh and Wifi drivers before enabling virtualization again but that's not working. I've also updated the Bios but that doesn't work either.

Windows won't boot! Windows protection error.
I just upgraded my mother board to a MSI and now I can't boot to Windows at all! I'm using two different versions of windows on seperate hard-disks (never at the same time) and both won't boot. I can get to Safe-mode in Win98. My system was fine before I upgraded.
System:
Motherboard - MSI, K7N2 Delta, Nvidia nForce 2 based.
CPU - AMD XP 2400+ T-bred.
CPU Cooler - 2 x 8000-rpm fans on Kanie Hedgehog (big heatsink).
Memory - Kingston 256Megs, two sticks for 512megs. (Says: Kingstort /VR, KVR266X64C25/256. I don't know much about memory.) It fits the DDR1 slot.
Graphics - Nvidia 5600.
Power supply - New, Allied brand, ATX-style, 450Watt.
OS - Windows 98, Windows XP (SP1)
(Win98 and WinXP are on seperate hard disks. Never used at the same time).
Problem:
1. When I boot to Win98 it just says "Protection Error, you will need to restart your system".
2. When I boot to WinXP it says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
Fixes and diagnostic:
1. Diagnostic lights on mother board cycle and and say OK.
2. I can get to Win98 Safe-Mode or Command prompt.
2. I don't have any other PCI cards installed except video.
3. I'm using only one of the memory sticks just to rule out the other (tried both).
4. I have most of the on-board peripherals disabled (sound, ethernet, serial. parallel, etc...).
5. Tried upping the voltage on memory. Same problem.
6. Tried setting memory for 100mhz. Same problem.
7. Tried reseating the memory. Same problem.
8. CPU temp is well within range at around 109F.
Questions:
What could the problem possibly be? I will try anything!
1. Is there some kind of safe mode for the hard drive settings?
2. Is there some kind of safe mode for memory speed?
3. Give me some hints! Upgrading the MB shouldn't be this hard! What am I overlooking? Thanks for any replies!Quote

Obviously you would have to change the jumper short every time you retry each HDD.
I am not following your line of thinking here. Win98 needs to on the primary drive, primary channel in most cases, yet XP can boot from any location, and any drive letter. So why would there be a need to constantly swap jumpers? Only thing needed is the Boot.ini file on the main drive, and it will boot from any OS listed there. -
Windows Won't Boot With USB Drives Attached
I just installed Windows 7 on my Mac mini but it won't boot into Windows automatically if there are USB drives attached. I have to hold down the option key at boot time and select the Windows partition manually for it to boot, unless I remove the USB drives first, then it will boot into Windows on its own. Does anyone know how to fix this annoying problem?
Sounds like your mini is set to boot order: boot from USB first.
On a PC you could go into BIOS and change boot order and enable/disable USB booting.
Not sure why or what is on the USB bus, type of drive and device that could also make a difference (and not be universal to the Mini) -

So, the only product that's actually new is the nForce2 400 which looks like a low-cost version of the Ultra 400 chipset. Unlike its feature-rich brother, the nForce2 400 offers only a single DDR controller and will not be able to support the MCP-T south bridge. However, it will still offer full support for the new 400MHz FSB, DDR400, up to 3GB of memory and AGP8X support. Not bad at all, especially IF NVIDIA sells it significantly cheaper than the Ultra 400 chipset.

Windows Won't Boot after resizing partition
I am having problems with Windows not rebooting after I resized partition to reduce Mac side and increase Windows side. I do not see the BootCamp partition labelled as such while running disk utility. Upon startup, the Windows partition shows up when I boot up while pressing the ALT key. However, when I try to run Windows, it says " error loading operatig system".
I also followed instruction and went through to run gdisk successfully. Results towards the end.

You should reboot or remove the drive.
The operation has completed successfully. So here's what I think happened. Upon resizing the OS X volume, a 5th partition was created. When that happens, diskutil removes the hybrid MBR that's needed to activate the EFI firmware CSM (BIOS emulator) which is still presently used for booting Windows on Apple hardware. Upon removing the hybrid MBR, Windows is no longer bootable. So what you probably did was used Disk Utility to reverse what you did by deleting the extra partition. When you do this, diskutil recreates the hybrid MBR but with the wrong partition type code. It sets it to 0x0C, and therefore thinks it's FAT32, whereas it should be 0x07 for NTFS. Disk Utility will then let you run a disk check on what it erroneously thinks is a FAT32 volume, but is in fact NTFS. If any writes are done, which it appears is the case, it corrupts the NTFS file system.
So this is just yet another Bootcamp data loss story, without any warning in either documentation or Disk Utility whatsoever.
What version of OS X is this?
The easiest, but most tedious thing to do is to totally start over with everything: obliterate the entire drive with Disk Utility making 1 partition only, reinstalling OS X and files from backups, use Bootcamp Assistant to resize the OS X volume the way you really want it, reinstall Windows and restore from its backup. All of that can be done in the GUI.
You might still use the Windows install disk to run Windows startup repair. It might fix the Bootcamp volume. The remaining problem in that case is what to do with the large pile of free space, but I'll make those suggestions later once you get to that point.
If Windows startup repair can't fix the Bootcamp volume, and you don't have a backup, then you'll need to download and install testdisk, and read how to use it to try and find your data. It's an iterative process. Once that's done, while it probably won't fix it and make it bootable again, you'll have a basic backup of files. The remaining thing to do is use gdisk remove the broken Windows partition, make a new one that also includes free space you presumably wanted Windows to have, and make a new hybrid MBR adding partitions 2 3 4. Then reinstall Windows, your apps, and restore your data from backups.
So that's the gist. Ask if you have more questions. -
Windows won't boot after 9.1 flash (K8T Neo2-F)
Hello,
I tried flashing to 9.1 to be able to use dual channel mode, but when i try to boot windows xp (sp2) won't start. I just get a blank screen.
I changed the bootorder correctly (1: CD 2:PM Maxtor).
I can boot fine from a CD or floppy when i press F11 or change bootorder.
Also when i try to put the Floppy as first bootdevice it just checks the floppydrive for a bootable disk, then halts.
When the CD is the first bootdevice and HD second, i get a few (about 3) weird colored characters on my screen.
When i try to boot from the second harddrive (40GB on primary slave), i get the message 'Missing operating system'.
I've had a similar problem before when i went from 3.3 to 9.1 and changing the LBA mode on the harddrive fixed that but now it doesn't change.
Could this be because the drive was formatted in non-LBA mode (although i doubt that's the case...)?
Any idea's?
Thanks.

Maxtor 6Y080L0 (80GB), primary master
Seagate ST340016A (40GB), primary slave
BenQ CD/DVD writer (16x): secondary masterAnd what about optimized defaults? We have already found this to be a problem if you don't set that first before setting up the Bios.
I mentioned the PSU as all you listed is watts and that as I say does not help us at all here. However 15a is asking for problems as you have nothing in reserve to operate from is say the PSU gets warm and loses efficiency, which by the way drops fast, or during startup you can have issues as well and may not even know it as this is the time that PSU's are asked for the most power. Also as you have a GF3 vid card, which at the moment is likely saving that PSU from even more stress, you aren't using 12v on that card, but if you upgrade sometime to a better vid card you will certainly go over the power budget that PSU has available and burn it up or maybe more. What I am saying is that we already know from experience here with people having issues that 15a don't cut it.
So now that I have had to repeat that all over again in yet another thread... You shopuld at least have a look at what you already have as needing an upgrade and while hopefully not at the moment as we already know it runs wether well or not, you should considure upgrading it before you do much else with that system. Not that you need to replace it this very moment. I am just making you aware that your already looking at a possible problem at some point there. -
Satellite A100: Windows won't boot - Unmountable Boot Volume
My son has a Satellite A100 running Windows XP SP3. Windows doesn't get past the Windows logo screen and terminates with an +Unmoutable Boot Volume+ message.
After this has happened, the HDD password status in BIOS is +HDD password froze+. Note that the HDD does not have a user password set.
What is happening here and how is it fixed?Well, I persevered with Recovery Console and fixed the problem with the Fixboot and Fixmbr commands. It appears that viruses had corrupted the boot sector or master boot record, making the remainder of the Windows partition unusable. Once these were repaired, all the directories and files were still intact and usable.
Interestingly, there is a hit for a similar problem on the Microsoft Windows XP help, but their solution is more complicated.

Portege 3490, Windows won't boot - how to reinstall?
Hi,
i have bought a secondhand portege laptop in US a few months ago. it was quite a bargain, though unfortunately it came without both floppy and cd drives, only with external network adaptor.
The problem is that now WinXP doesn't boot up due to some mess i have done with Acronis partitioning software- dos prompt just says:
Starting Acronis Loader...
Acronis Loader: No configuration file present.
Press <Enter> to reboot...
I suppose it wouldn't be much of a problem if i had floppy and/or cd drive. Though i would rather avoid buying one just for one-time OS installation. (normally i use lan connection to transfer files between my computers).
Anyway, i would greatly appreciate if you could tell me how to boot/install OS using network LAN connection (how to turn my stationary pc into a dhcp server and share cd-rom drive over the network, etc.). I alredy tried to search the internet for this, but there is surprisingly poor feedback on this subject, and toshiba as well didn't write anything about this in the manual...
best regards,
aldousHi
Well I think somewhere there should be the info that it supports booting from LAN (PXE). But since this reqiures some heave stuff behind the LAN it might prove a bit difficult telling the whole story in the manual.
Anyway, the way I am familiar with this is that you can boot the machine from LAN (or rather install the machine from LAN) if you have a RIS (Remote Installation Server) available. This is not something that poeple generally have in their homes. What it takes is a Win2000 / XP or possibly Win2003 server with DHCP server active. You also need to prepare a special 'image' of the installation media (but there is a guide helping you with this in Win2000 server at least).
After that it should be pretty straightforward. Booting the machine from LAN, getting an IP and accepting to download the bootstrap from the server, logging on and then it really looks as if you are booting from a Windows Media.
So in short - to use this you need Win2000/XP/2003 server and the Windows media of choice. Some LAN cables and possibly a switch/hub.
If you can get hold of a PC Card (16 bit!) CD Rom and can make a bootable CD Rom then that might prove easier.
Theoratically you could also move your HDD to another PC, and there either
- install Windows on it
or
make 2 partitions and copy the Windows media to the second, make the first bootable with f.ex. DOS/Win9X, move it back and install Windows to the first partition when the disk is back in the 3490.
But both theese 2 varaints gives 2 potential problms and they both are complicated to solve:
If You install only DOS/Win9X on the HDD you will probably get problems booting the HDD when you put it back in the 3490.
If You install windows on the HDD you will probably both get problems booting the HDD and also getting windows to load properly due to differences in chipsets.
Sorry for a lot of words :)
Good luck!

Mac Mini Mid 2010 windows won't boot
After using boot camp to install and run Windows 7 on a Mac Mini Mid 2010, I restarted the machine to boot OSX. Now I can't boot back to Windows. Boot Camp seems to be working fine, but the partition I created doesn't appear to be bootable. I don't know what to do or how to solve the issue. How can I solve this issue?
I will venture that you were unlucky. Twice could be a coincidence. However, if it were to occur again, then you have a pattern and I would imagine that Apple would think something in your home/office is causing the issue and be less likely to want to swap for another.

Windows won't boot - can't boot from disc either
Trying to help a friends HP Touchsmart desktop unit. It will not boot. It sits at the Windows screen and does not move beyond it. Getting the computer to boot into safe mode provides the same results. it cannot get beyond the boot screen from Windows.
So I am now attempting to do a system recovery. The problem is, I cannot get the computer to boot from the disc. I was successful once, did a recovery, but then got the BSOD. Now I am just trying to get this thing to boot from the cd again, and it will not respond. In the BIOS, i have set the Disc to be the first device, but to not avail.
Any help would be appreciated - Frustration is growing! Thanks!Hi,
a few questions'
1. to which sure- which Operating Sysytem is trying to boot ?
2.Prior to this failure has any new program, software, hardware - or any kind of new peripheral been installed (including USB operated hardware) ?

Windows won't boot unless a bootable CD is present
I've installed windows previously many times without any issues and consider myself to be very experienced.
I have performed a clean installation of Windows 7 Pro on an Acer Travelmate laptop. When I remove the DVD and attempt to boot the laptop recognises no bootable media.
If I run the windows installation DVD and attempt a repair, the automatic repair informs me that there is nothing wrong with the installation. Now here's the funny bit ...
If I leave the DVD in the drive the laptop asks whether I want to boot the DVD, which I ignore. The Hard drive with the installed OS boots successfully and works 100%. I have completed the installation, patched the drivers, and performed most
of the windows updates without any problems. If I remove the DVD the Hard Drive doesn't boot - If the DVD is in place the Hard Drive does boot.
HELP PLEASEI FOUND IT !!!
The laptop was formerly installed with Windows 8 and he installed with Windows 7.
After a flight the laptop failed to boot.
In the BIOS I noticed that the drive occasionally reported as Frozen.
I followed the instructions on the Acer site and this made no difference.
Convinced that the problem related to the change from UEFI to Legacy BIOS and disk/BIOS security I decided to manually reset everything step by step. After this, the laptop booted OK and the problem was resolved. I am sure that the following
is more comprehensive than necessary, but this is the procedure I followed:
F2 - Enter BIOS
Set mode to UEFI
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and F2 immediately to enter BIOS
Disable secure boot
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and F2 immediately to enter BIOS
Change to Legacy Mode
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and F2 immediately to enter BIOS
Set Supervisor password
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and F2 immediately to enter BIOS
Enter Supervisor Password when prompted
Set Drive Password
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and F2 immediately to enter BIOS
Enter Drive password when prompted
Enter Supervisor Password when prompted
Clear Drive Password
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and F2 immediately to enter BIOS
Enter Supervisor Password when prompted
Clear Supervisor Password
Save and Exit / Power Off (remove battery and supply)
Restart and the drive was detected and booted 100%
I hope this helps someone else

HP pavilion 751n desktop recently replaced motherboard and now windows won't boot up.
Keep getting the screen asking to start in safe mode etc. Tried using the recovery cd to reinstall all of the programs but it says I can only use this on an HP pavilion, I'm guessing because I replaced the motherboard it is not recognizing the computer as one. Any way around this or is there something else I should try first? Running windows xp.
Hi… I don’t this has anything to do with Network Name or old Wireless Network connection. Might be some of the system files are missing or gone corrupt. I would suggest you boot the system in safe mode and restore the system to a restore point dated 15 days back. This will help you to boot the system in normal mode.

Window won't boot after factory restore
Hi:
My notebook is Pavilion dv4 -1435dx, running Vista 64, before i did system restore, windows was running very slow after log on, won't be able to work on it at all.... so i decided to do a factory restore. I tried 4,5 times of factory restore,(but failed, stuck at startup repair). And last, finally have it completely restore. right after that, I did windows upate the first thing. After downloaded and installed of windows update, Windows need to restart.... and then it stuck at startup repair again.....now it won't logon to window......
Please help!! Thank you.Hi
1) Once unit is powered on keep tapping F2 run the test and check if all test passes. If any test fails you need to replace the part.
2) If test passes you might need a set off recovery disc.

Partitions changed to DYNAMIC and now Windows won't boot
I made a significant error when trying to format a new partition by letting Windows Disk Manager convert all partitions from Basic to Dynamic (I am not sure why this is even possible, let alone the default action).
My W510 boots just fine, but the bootloader no longer loads an OS. I had both W7P and Ubuntu 11 in the menu. Memtests were also available.
How do I fix the bootloader?I'd probably try converting those dynamic disks back into basic. There's probably some program to do it either from a bootable environment. Otherwise, plug the drive into a secondary slot in another system and do it from there.
