Windows 7 won't restart (to Windows) in 10.8

Here's my issue.
I have Mac OS Mountain Lion on a 2011 iMac with a single internal hard drive, partitioned to Mac and Windows.
The boot camp control panels work fine when setting the startup disk.  To summarise:
I can set the Mac to restart to Windows7 (64 bit).
In Windows I can set it to restart to Mac OS X.
I can restart within Mac OS X to Mac OS X.
The problem is restarting within Windows 7.  The shutdown part happens, but it just won't start up again.  I get a blank grey screen.  Powering off and then hitting the option key doesn't do anything - no ability to select a startup OS.
In the end I have to load the iMac installer CD and change the startup disk from there.
Can anyone shed some light on what's happening here?  Thanks in advance.

Use your Windows DVD instead.
Do some cleanup and maintenance in Windows.
The owners of iMac running Windows - I read very similar threads, a new one or two daily. Graphic driver and security updates from Microsoft perhaps.

  • New audiocard - Windows won't restart

    Hi,
I bought an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 audio card last week, and I'm having some weird problems with it. My motherboard is MSI K7N2-L Delta w/ 512Mb of RAM, 3Com's network card and Matrox G550, and I have installed the latest drivers from M-Audio's and Nvidia's site.
The problem is that everything works just fine until I choose "restart" in Windows XP (with all the updates installed). My computer hangs after Windows tries to boot until I hit any key on keyboard, and after that Windows starts normally, but keyboard and mouse won't work at all. I've tried to switch the PCI slot for the card but that didn't help. I'd be happy to hear any suggestions!

may be try disabling its game controller port
the board does not have one but with other audio cards its seemed to act as if it has and conflict with the one they have
disable any other bits your not using in the bios com ports etc

  • Windows Won't Restart After PSE 8 Install

I have repeated the following three times now, same result each time. I installed PSE 8 on my Vista based system, everything completes OK and asks to restart. The low level stuff runs OK and the screen goes blank as Windows starts to load. But then it hangs. I waited over an hour once, just to make sure it was really hung, since Vista has never been know for lightning fast response.  When I force a restart it recommends the start up repair, since Windows would not start after a software install. It can't fix it and offers to roll back to previous restore point, which gets me back where I was, with no PSE. My machine is an HP, about 2 years old, pretty vanilla configuration (no hardware mods, MS Office, Trend Micro AV, few other utilies, no games or high end graphic stuff except video camera support stuff from Sony). Any thoughts? Paid $100 for the software and would really like to get to use it . . . .

Normally I would tell you to wait until the developer put out an update.  However, i just checked my OPlayer Lite, and it seems to work fine.  So it sounds like something in your OPlayer's data is a tad broken.
    1. Make sure you have a valid backup.  iCloud backup is great. I also suggest making an unencrypted backup in iTunes.  Also, import all photos into your computer.
    2. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings.
    3. Set up iPhone as a new device, DO NOT sign into iCloud or restore from any backup. DO sign into iTunes.
    4. Redownload OPlayer, test.  If it opens, then there was an issue with the OPlayer data, and your backups are pretty useless if you want this App.  If it doesn't work, then the issue with the iOS 8 Update.
    5. If the issue is with the Data, then Sign into iCloud to sync contacts/calendars/notes/etc, sync photos/music/movies/books/apps from iTunes.  Also you can download apps.
    6. If the issue seems to be with the update, then plug iPhone into iTunes and restore to factory.  Then set up as new again and download OPlayer, test.  Should work.  If it does, then restore your backup from iTunes or Erase and restore from iCloud.
    7. If it doesn't work, contact the developer and AppleCare.  AppleCare will say its the developer's issue, but they can gather log files and have their Engineers take a peak, on the off chance there is something wonky with your iPhone or how its handling iOS 8.

  • Lion won't restart, but Windows 7 runs fine

I recently installed Windows 7 on my macbook pro with bootcamp, and so far it has been working great.  As of right now though, i can't boot in to the mac side, only windows.  When I try to boot into the mac side it stops at the startup screen with the apple logo and it has the circle of rotating lines under it.  It stays there and doesn't go any further.  I'm not sure what to do, and need to know a solution asap.
    Thanks for the help.

Try a safe boot, hold the shift key as soon as you hear the chime (not before), keep it depressed until you see the Apple Logo and the spinning gear. Post back.

  • Windows won't boot! Windows protection error.

I just upgraded my mother board to a MSI and now I can't boot to Windows at all! I'm using two different versions of windows on seperate hard-disks (never at the same time) and both won't boot. I can get to Safe-mode in Win98.  My system was fine before I upgraded.
    System:
Motherboard - MSI, K7N2 Delta, Nvidia nForce 2 based.
    CPU - AMD XP 2400+ T-bred.
CPU Cooler - 2 x 8000-rpm fans on Kanie Hedgehog (big heatsink).
Memory - Kingston 256Megs, two sticks for 512megs. (Says:  Kingstort /VR, KVR266X64C25/256. I don't know much about memory.) It fits the DDR1 slot.
    Graphics - Nvidia 5600.
Power supply - New, Allied brand, ATX-style, 450Watt.
    OS - Windows 98, Windows XP (SP1)
(Win98 and WinXP are on seperate hard disks. Never used at the same time).
    Problem:
    1. When I boot to Win98 it just says "Protection Error, you will need to restart your system".
    2. When I boot to WinXP it says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
    Fixes and diagnostic:
    1. Diagnostic lights on mother board cycle and and say OK.
    2. I can get to Win98 Safe-Mode or Command prompt.
    2. I don't have any other PCI cards installed except video.
    3. I'm using only one of the memory sticks just to rule out the other (tried both).
    4.  I have most of the on-board peripherals disabled (sound, ethernet, serial. parallel, etc...).
    5. Tried upping the voltage on memory. Same problem.
    6. Tried setting memory for 100mhz. Same problem.
    7. Tried reseating the memory. Same problem.
    8. CPU temp is well within range at around 109F.
    Questions:
What could the problem possibly be? I will try anything!
    1. Is there some kind of safe mode for the hard drive settings?
    2. Is there some kind of safe mode for memory speed?
    3. Give me some hints! Upgrading the MB shouldn't be this hard! What am I overlooking? Thanks for any replies!

I am not following your line of thinking here. Win98 needs to on the primary drive, primary channel in most cases, yet XP can boot from any location, and any drive letter. So why would there be a need to constantly swap jumpers? Only thing needed is the Boot.ini file on the main drive, and it will boot from any OS listed there.

  • Help! Mail freeze: window won't open, nor will it close so I can restart

I've just had a strange problem with Mail. The window won't open - or has issues with opening (it did, but only briefly). It's generally having problems - its menus aren't dropping down - and I would like to quit and restart the computer (a Mac Mini). I've tried an apple q and nothing is happening. So the computer won't restart unless I force a shut down by manually holding down the button.
    Any suggestions most welcome…

  • HP OfficeJet J6410 won't install under Windows 8

    Hello to you all,
Two days ago, I bought a new notebook for my daughter. She needs it for her study. It's the HP Pavilion TouchSmart 11-e000ed.
Again, just like the situation I wrote about before in this topic over here (link: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/Officet-J6410-won-t-install-under-Wind... the OfficeJet Printer J6410 won't install under Windows 8.
Now this is what I've done before the problem occured:
    - I made a username and password for her,
    - I activated Windows 8,
    - I made a recovery-point,
    - I took my external DVD writer, installed Office 2007 Home and Student for her (o.k, I know it's old, but it's very o.k - and legal copy -. for her study, used it myself as well and still do, and never any complaints about that one), and activated it,
    After that and restarting the notebook;
    - the notebeek activated USB 2.0 (it does that automatically at first use),
    - installed XPS2OneNote (to use for Office OneNote 2007),
    - installed SaveAsPDF&XPS,
    - removed Norton Internet Security (I never use it, I use something else for that purpose, but was - and still am - planning to install that on a later moment),
    - I made sure the notebook can access the server we have here at home, and made a share for her.
After that I used the OJ_AIO_J6400_Full_Win_WW_140_408.exe file (Dutch, but I'll translate the text in English).
From this point on I will describe as precisely as possible what happened
    - - the program extracts some files, no problems there,
    - - when the first screen appears, I pressed 'Install',
    - -  a bar appears, and after that another pop-up that says tha you must allow all HP processes. I pressed 'Next',
    - - system is controlled, and after that one must agree with the licence agreements. I checked the box, and pressed 'Next',
    - - the system is prepared for installation and - yes! - there it comes... an error message.
    The error message says:
    C:\users\<username of my daughter.\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS0FF0\Setup\de..
Please not that this is a different message than the one I got before, as I described in my posting before, (link again: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/Officet-J6410-won-t-install-under-Wind...
Nonehteless, I assumed that, as before, the problem was with the C+++, just like before. That is why I made the following steps:
    - I used the OJ_AIO_J6400_140_408_Scrubber program, run L4 4 times.
    - I looked for the KB2565063 update, but it isn't there anymore. So, instead, I ran all updates there are until the system said that there are no updates to be found,
    - After that I took the old installation disk that came with the OfficeJet J6410 printer, and (tried to) ran hpsetup.exe. It doesn't do a thing! Literally!!
    - after that I tried to run the the OJ_AIO_J6400_Full_Win_WW_140_408.exe file again. No success. I got the same error as before (see above, the ..\7zS0FF0\Setup\de.. thing again.
    So, what to do now?
Anyone got some helpfull tips for me? I would really appreciate your feedback / help.
    Thank you in advance,

    Hi again,
No, it didn't work. And, the solution you offered neither.
    This is what I've done.
After downloading the  OJ_AIO_J6400_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe file, I tried to install it.
It failed. I got an error message similar to the one before.
    'C:\users\<username of my daughter.\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS57DB\Setup\de.'
I tried to ran the scrubber again, and the CCCUninstaller and tried again.
    Same error message occured.
After that I tried to look for the KB2565063 file again. Found it this time and ran the vcredist_x64 file.
I rebooted the system, tried to run the OJ_AIO_J6400_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe file again.
    Same error message ocuured.
So, after that, I followed the steps you proposed.
Step 2 - searching for hpoins*.dat --> no results found.
Step 3 - searching for hpwins*.dat --> no results found.
Step 4 - I ran the Run Dialog box and typed MSIEXEC /REGSERVER (with AND without the extra space between ('MSIEXEC /REGSERVER') in the Dialog Box and pressed Ok.
Got an error message in Dutch:
'Kan het bestand MSIEXEC /REGSERVER niet vinden. Controleer of u de naam juist hebt ingevoerd en probeer het daarna opnieuw.
Translation: 'Can't find the file MSIEXEC /REGSERVER. Check if you typed the name correctly and try again'.
Step 5 - I ran the Run Dialog box and typed MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER (with AND without the extra space between ('MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER') in the Dialog Box and pressed Ok.
Got an error message in Dutch:
'Kan het bestand MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER niet vinden. Controleer of u de naam juist hebt ingevoerd en probeer het daarna opnieuw.
Translation: 'Can't find the file MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER. Check if you typed the name correctly and try again'.
    So... conclusion: NOTHING worked.
My ideas for a possible solution didn't work, and neither did your ideas for a possible solution.
Reason why I want it to work is because of the HP Solution Center. If I can not install it with the software from the original installation disk, or the software that one can download from the HP site (the OJ_AIO_J6400_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe file that is), than I have no HP Solution Center. That would be a pity, for I am sure my daughter would really love the use and ease of the program, and would really use it a lot for her study.
What's next? What else can I try to solve the problem?
Got any more idea's or helpful hints?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Driver won't install and setup won't finish on windows 8.1 64bit

    Hi
We have a HP PSC 1410 All-In-One installed on an old pc with windows 7 and the printer is working fine but I decided to move the printer and plug it in on my brand new ultra high end gaming pc with win 8.1 64bit on it for obvious reasons, because the pc is alot faster. Pc config: i5 2500k 4GHZ, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 970  4 GB,  you get the picture a very fast gaming pc lol.
I downloaded the proper driver on the hp support website and started the setup and windows doesn't recognize the printer and the driver.
Everytime I uninstall and reinstall the driver I get this error:
It seems to be my even though HP claims that they have windows 8.1 driver support for my printer, it actually doesn't support it. Because I even tried to install it on my HP (the irony lol) laptop with win 8.1 on it and it doesn't work. I get the same problems and errors.
So to recap it: setup won't complete, gives me an error and then uninstalls the software by itself ....
Can anyone confirm that this specific printer model works on win 8.1? If yes, why doesn't it work on both my pc and laptop with win 8.1? Why does it only work on my old pc with win 7?
It's really a shame because the printer (even though it's very old) is still great and I like it, I just wish it would work on my new pc.
If anyone knows how to fix this or with a workaround please do share.
    Regards
    Elvis

    Hiya @Elvis29,
First and foremost, I apologize for the delay, I have been researching what could be causing this issue, and more importantly what we can do to resolve it.
    Please complete the following steps and let me know the outcome of your efforts;
Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type %temp%
Delete all files and folders from the temp folder. Choose skip if any pop ups appear saying any of the files could not be deleted
I think in order to get the install package to install properly it would be best to unlock the admin account, then try to install again.
Let's begin with a clean boot first; How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    How to Unlock Admin Account:
Open an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 8 & 8.1 (Instructions here)
Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:yes and hit enter
Next, close CMD and restart your computer
When your computer comes on log into the new account that should show. It will  be called Administrator and will not have a password on it.
If your computer automatically logs into your account after restart than go to your start menu click the arrow beside 'shutdown' and choose 'switch user'. Now log into the Administrator account we just unlocked
Under the Administrator account download and install the drivers using the Printer Install Wizard.
The Printer Install Wizard will by pass the Windows Installer. This runs its only installer or install shield, which will interact independent of the Windows Installer. This may allow the file that cannot be found, to be found and let the install finish.  HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows
The HP Printer Install Wizard for Window was created to help Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 users download and install the latest and most appropriate HP software solution for their HP Printer.
If everything installs fine, log out of this account and back into your normal user account. All the Software and Drivers for your product should show installed now on your account.
If everything works fine, you will want to Hide the Administrator account.
Go to your Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD
CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'
Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:no and hit enter
Next, close CMD and restart your computer
    Please keep me posted.
Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.

  • Satellite A200 - Button support won't start on windows start up

    Hey,
Today I decided to turn off as many useless program's as I could (to speed up my pc) so I went to Msconfig (I have vista home premium 32 bit), and turned a lot of things off. Including the "toshiba button support". The next time I restarted my extra buttons on the top of the keyboard all worked, beside one. The one that normally turns windows media player on. This time, it did nothing at all. The play/resume, stop, forward, backward and internet button all worked without problem.
However, I really liked the WMP button, so I tried to find out what the problem was. I found out it was the button support, so I decided to turn it back on.
However, this did not help :( . I turned it on in msconfig again, but it won't start with windows anymore :(. I know it's the program I need, because when I manually launch the program (it's the program: programfiles/toshiba/TBS/HSON.exe ) the button works.
I did put a V in front of the program in msconfig, but that did not work. Anyone has an idea why not?
Edit: I found a solution, although not the best. If anyone ever has the same problem:
I made a shortcut from the program that had to run (can be found in C:programfiles/toshiba/TBS and is called HSON.exe). Next I clicked on start, and said "all programs", here I selected the folder "opstarten", this is the dutch version, but my guess is it is called something like "start up" in english. In this, I pasted (copy/cut -> paste) the shortcut to the program, and now it starts again :)

    Hi!
I agree with Akuma. You should try to reinstall the Toshiba Value Added Package. This controls the media buttons, FN buttons and all special functions on the notebook.
Look on the Toshiba website for an update:

Why won't my tabs & windows reopen as they should, even tho I have it set for them to do so?
"Firefox can be configured to restore all windows and tabs that were open when the application is closed or terminated unexpectedly. This article describes the circumstances under which your session is restored and how you can configure it."
I have it set up, in "Tools", "Options", etc., for my windows and tabs to reopen & be restored to the webpages that they were previously at before I, for one reason or another, restarted my computer! But, after I restart my computer and the Firefox browser, it always goes to my homepage; the windows & tabs NEVER restart as they should!
It wasn't always like this. It has only been within the last few weeks that this has become a constant and consistent problem. I assume that a Firefox update somehow disabled something & that's why it isn't working properly but, whatever...
How do I fix this so that my windows & tabs reopen as they should!?

Have you checked to make sure that under>> Options >> General >> That the startup behavior is appropriately? I had the same problem after upgrading and setting my homepage. It should be set to "show my windows and tabs from last time".
Just re-read your post. sounds like you've tried this already.

With Windows 7 Home Premium, whenever I start iTunes, I get a message that colors have been reverted to Windows Basic because iTunes won't support my Windows Aero configuration.  Is there a fix for the incompatibility?  I don't mind the color changes, but I'm having an external speaker problem that could be related to the incompatibility (at random times--usually several hours after start-up, my external speakers--connected via my Samsung Central Station's wireless docking station and computer-installed dongle--shut off and won't play until I restart.  I've investigated other options, but iTunes may be the problem.)  Thanks.

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

I'm thinking that the Ipod's base operating software was corrupt or some ****.

    Get it on!!!!!!!!!!!!

Insert orig cd, let software run, if it doesn't run auto like mine, open it and install... Goes though installation, at some point you asked to format the ipod, mount it, then it will wipe everything!! But that's a start at least you can do something!! right!

I am trying to install Windows 10 64 bit because I want to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit.
I have already installed windows 10 ISO and mounted onto my usb and it works
BUT! my Problem is when it loads, I see the logo and the loading sign for 10 sec. than its has a quick blue box thing saying:
"there are problems on your computer and now it will restart"
it won't let me enter into the installation page? if I took the usb out windows 7 still works.
I am trying to run a clean installation on my hard drive, my hard drive is 500gb and I have 10gb ram running
Should I manually re-format my hard drive before I run the windows 10 64 bit installation.
Please help ! if anyone had run into this problem before, please help me ! DX

Paul Adare is correct in saying that you cannot "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit. You can, however, backup your files and reload them onto your PC.
Given that you are able to boot Windows 7 after the failure to install Windows 10 Technical Preview, it is apparent that you are not formatting the drive during your clean installation. There are a number of potential issues an existing configuration can
cause, such as preventing Windows Setup from registering boot files, modifying partitions, or moving an existing installation and data to the windows.old folder. I would recommend removing the partitions from your drive (note: this will erase any data remaining
on the hard disk) during installation to ensure that Windows Setup has a fresh hard drive to install to. If you continue to experience errors, two other factors to take into consideration are:
Does your system use a storage controller that requires loading a driver during Windows Setup?
Is the hardware malfunctioning? Do the hard disk and memory pass testing software like Windows Memory Diagnostic or chkdsk?
