Windows 7 won't start after forced shutdown

HP Pavilion DV9628
Windows 7 64-bit
I was installing a windows update when the system got hung up. I pressed the power button to force shut down. Now when I press the power button, I can hear the hard drive spin, the boot process starts and then the power turns off. The amount of time to shut-off varies. If I leave the computer off external power for about a week I can get all the way to seeing the desktop, but then the power shuts off. I have tried re-installing Windows 7 after a week draining the battery, but it shuts off mid-install. Please help!

Hi,
Can you post back with the following details.
The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).
Do you receive any error messages at start-up?  If you do, include details.
Regards,
DP-K

  • Help!  PowerBook G4 crashed on sleep, won't start after forced shutdown.

Urgent call for help: After I downloaded a RealPlayer update today, I neglected to run Disk Utility permissions repair. A little later I left my G4 PowerBook running for a few hours and when I came back and tried to wake it up, it wouldn't come out of sleep mode (white light was pulsing).
I held down the Power button for about 20 seconds but nothing happened, so I removed the battery, which also didn't force a shutdown (white light still on). Finally, after the battery had been out for 5 minutes, I replaced it, plugged the computer in again, and held the Power button down, and it finally shut down (white light went off after about 15 seconds).
I then tried to restart the computer by pressing the Power button, but now nothing at all happens--no chime; it doesn't even go to a gray or blue screen. I've searched Discussions and found a post from "Maxit" suggesting a reboot from the Install disk to someone whose screen went as far as blue and what to do after that to prevent the problem in the future, but since the computer won't draw power, I can't insert the Install disk. (I've copied Maxit's fix below.)
Is there anything I can do to get the computer at least to the point where I can reboot from the Install disk--besides wait until AppleCare and/or my local repairman wakes up on Monday morning? Thanks for any suggestions!

First thing I would do is to restart from the 10.3 installation Disk and rather than proceeding with the installation, go to the menu bar, find Disk Utility, open it and run "Repair." If errors show up, run again.
Then, I would boot into Safe Mode (which forces a directory repair). See this KB article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
This will take longer than a normal restart. Once booted, go into Disk Utility on the drive and repair permissions, then restart. Were this not to resolve your issue, then I would suggest doing an "Archive and Reinstall" of 10.3:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Then update the software to 10.3.9 (be sure to repair permissions after the update).
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   15"

Yes, the sleep light stayed on until I was finally able to force a shutdown by removing the battery for a time, putting it back, and holding down the power button.
You've asked a good question: I don't know why it didn't go black as soon as I took the battery out, or why I had to hold down the power button for almost 30 seconds before it finally did.
Maybe when the battery is drained to 1%--which is what the indicator said when I finally realized what had happened and plugged it back in--its reserves are so low that it doesn't have the wherewithal to turn itself off. Or maybe after 5 hours of hibernation it was cranky when I tried to wake it up. . Do you know why it wouldn't respond as expected as soon as the battery was removed or the power button held down?

  • Tiger: Won't Restart After Force Shutdown

After a force shutdown (due to a system hang or whatever), my PB 15" Aluminum won't reboot. I just get the gray screen with the revolving curly-que--forever. I have to start up on another volume (I have partioned my HD). Then I usually run Disk Utility (shows no repair necessary). After that I can restart the original volume. This occurred under previous versions of Tiger; it is not peculiar to 10.4.5. Anyone else experience this? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try things in Mac101 (no offense) and Apple doc.#106464 for your
    startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your
startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache
Corruption. His link will help walk you thru
    it.
    Cheers!
    DALE
Thanks, I was unaware of these materials, but they seem to address issues that would preclude startups on a regular basis, such as persistent incompatiabilities. In my case, once I have rebooted the machine with another volume (the Tiger install disc also works), I have no problem in rebooting in the original volume thereafter again and again (at least until the next system freeze and force shoutdown). I only have the problem after a force shutdown, never at any other time. Still, I will try the things recommended in the references you gave and see if I can identify the problem.

  • Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown

Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?
    Brian

    Hi,
Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.)  Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Brian

  • Windows 2000 won't start after iTunes 7.3 upgrade

Yesterday I upgraded to iTunes 7.3 and after the required reboot, windows 2000 hangs on its startup screen. I can boot from the windows 2000 CD and login to the win2k installation on the hard disk using the admin password, but I don't know how to uninstall iTunes from the recovery console. Any ideas?
    Dell Dimension 4100   Windows 2000

Was not able to uninstall easyCD creator, but did get windows to start again by following the directions below from the website listed below. Lots of work still ahead to get it back to normal, but at least I didn't lose all my data.
    http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/127361-help-inaccessiblebootdevice-stop-0x0000007b-blue.html
Method 1: Use a Backup Registry System Hive to Edit the Registry
Use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to start the computer.
If you need a third-party hard disk controller, press S to specify an additional device, and then insert the floppy disk that contains the correct driver for the hard disk controller.
Press R to repair a Windows 2000 installation.
Press C to use the recovery console.
Log on to the Windows installation that you want and type the Administrator password.
Change to the %windir%\System32\Config\ directory. To do this, type the following command at the C:\Winnt prompt (where C: is the drive and Winnt is the directory where Windows 2000 is installed), and then press ENTER:
    chdir system32\config
Type ren system system.old, and then press ENTER.
Type copy C:\winnt\repair\system, and then press ENTER. The following information appears:
    1 file(s) copied.
Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit the recovery console and restart Windows.

Your case may be simpler to resolve. You do not have the MBR entry for Windows.
Do you a NTFS header "R.NTFS" when you run the following command in Terminal?
    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

  • Mac Won't Start up(Forced Shutdowns)

Okay I don't have Apple Protection plan to start.
I have a 24 inch imac with 320GB hard drive.
One day as I was visiting my normal sites everything froze except for the cursor and I forced my computer to shut down by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Then it took about 10 minutes to start up fully and I opened safari up and it froze again and then I force shut down the computer again.
After it refused to start up again I looked up on my iphone how to safe boot the computer and shut it down and tried to safe boot it. It posted up a bunch of white text and then stopped and restarted but then did nothing.
Eventually I did a disk erase and reinstalled leopard. It worked for about a day and a half before I had to install some system updates and then it froze again and after rebooting it, it wouldn't start up again. I then erased the drive again, but the install wasn't working anymore.
I then tried installing with leopard and that worked(though again, briefly) and then wouldn't install again. Finally I did a Zero Out erase and then it worked and I held off updating anything until I figured out a lot of my java apps weren't working and so tried doing just vital updates and then nothing. I then tried a 7 pass zero out. Nothing. I finally did a 35 pass zero out and nothing.
I am at my wits end now.
Edit: Oh just to add. Before we erased the hard drive the first time, it said the hard drive was completely full(despite me having about 30-40 gb free beforehand)
    Message was edited by: bigugly73

The 7 and 35 pass options would not have helped you beyond the singe-pass zero out data.
I think your hard drive is starting to fail. It seems to work well enough so that you can do an installation after erasing, but continued use of it seems to cause data corruption, which is probably why it starts to not run properly after a short while.
Here are some things you can try, if you have not already. Reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac and reconnecting using a precise procedure. You should disconnect ALL cables when you do this. If you have been using a crowded or old power strip, you should connect it directly to a wall power outlet for this test. Power it up with nothing connected, except for power cord. If the iMac is currently in an non-bootable state, connect only your keyboard/mouse and try to do another erase and install. See if you are able to get it to boot up and run reliably. If all is well, you can connect your other peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices; peripherals can sometimes cause conflict, so if the problem returns after they are connected, try to figure out if one of them is causing this problem.
If your iMac still does not run reliably, after an SMC reset with only keyboard/mouse connected, then the most likely cause is a faulty hard drive.

  • Windows- bootcamp won't start after installing OSX Yosemite

    Hi Loner T,
Like many people with the yosemite update, my boot camp no longer works.
I cannot find the drive when I'm booting up.
Startup Disk under system preferences only shows the Mac system and does not show any other option.
I've been trying to go through what you've posted to help other people but I've never even worked with terminal application before and everything is very confusing.

    1. What happens if you power cycle and hold the Alt key?
    2. Do you have any third-party NTFS software (Tuxera, Paragon, MacDrive, NTFS-3g, NTFSFree...)?

  • Portege R830 - Windows won't start after I install Comodo Firewall

    Good afternoon,
I purchased today a Portege R830, and after the Windows configuration was over, the first program I installed was the popular free firewall Comodo. After I rebooted, Windows 7 wouldn't start anymore. It would get stuck on the user login screen and I know it's a problem with the firewall because if I make a system restore to the restore point created by the firewall installer, the windows will start again.
So I ask if there is any incompability between the firewall and some software on the Toshiba. Has anyone ever had this problem? I've been trying to solve this issue all day long with no results. I even re-installed Windows 7 using the Toshiba recovery and the issue persists. I really love Comodo, and I want this firewall on my laptop, but Windows just won't start!
Any help would be very apreciated.

    Hi jillefsky,
Have you disabled the Windows firewall before you started with Comodo firewall installation? As far as I know Portege R830 is delivered with preinstalled McAfee security software and you should remove this program before you install any other security tools.
Generally speaking this issue has nothing to do with Toshiba and its recommendable to contact Comodo directly. Maybe they know about this issue so they can give you a proper answer.
But I dont understand why this program is so important for you. Windows has already an internal firewall so such programs are not necessary in my opinion. Just install a good antivirus program like AntiVir and activate automatic Windows updates. Thats all!

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
