Windows 7 X201 - suspect plagued with viruses - what to do?

Apologies if I'm in the wrong place...
I have an X201 and suspect I'm plagued with viruses, but still have a functional computer.
I don't know if I should do the virus scans -- from my experience the viruses protect themselves and prevent scans from finding and deactivating them.-- or pursue an entire system reinstall?
And if I were to do that, how would I prevent viruses from coming along?
I would really appreciate some help before I get frozen up and totally disfunctional and have to start working off my Mac Powerbook -- which is not like the tank of x201 or even close.

Welcome to Lenovo Community
From your brief description, I have a feeling that you may be infected by one of the rogues that is giving you a fake alert. Is it claiming to be Microsoft Security Essentials that is giving you this alert?
Let's see if we can get you started...
Please download Rkill by Grinler from here Rkill and save it to your Desktop (or to a CD or USB Stick and transfer it to the Desktop) of the infected computer.  If that does not work try this alternate Link
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs.
Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, please ignore it, and run rkill.com again. This message is just a fake warning given by the malware when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it.
Therefore, please run rkill quite a few times until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions below.
*NOTE: A log pops up at the end of the run. This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. You can close this log when you wish.
Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
On the Scanner tab:
Back at the main Scanner screen:
If using Vista or Windows 7, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE==================================

  • Safari and pop-up window saying computer is infected with virus

    Hello,
I'm ... "hoping"...this was just scareware stuff - but I was on safari and clicked on a link off of google when I got a pop-up that said my computer has been infected. I think another window popped up and I clicked cancel - and kept on clicking cancel...it kept popping up and I'd click cancel - finally about after say 5 times closing the popup - the original popup was there. I don't think it gave me a choice to cancel...it was like continue or some other choice.
At any rate what appeared next was what looked like file folders and perhaps a scan bar or progress bar and a bunch of stuff about viruses detected. I panicked and quickly just closed the window as quick as possible and now can't even really recall what I saw.
I honestly didn't do anything other than click on a link. So I can't imagine I really did anything. Can you get into trouble just from clicking on a link?? Is there a way to tell if I really did anything? Has anyone else had this happen and know it is either a concern or just scareware??
    Any suggestions?
    Should I be concerned??
    Thanks!!

    Hi
No virus out there affects a Mac directly. Best way to eliminate these intrusive panels is to add DNS server codes to your System preferenes>Network panel.
To do so, open the panel, click on your Internet connection on the left, then select "advanced". In the DNS panel copy/paste these openDNS codes on separate lines: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Then, select OK, then "apply".
    Restart Safari.
In Safari, open Safari Preferences>Security>Show Cookies. In the spotlight panel, type the name of the website triggering the warning. Remove any cookies that appear.
Lastly, in the Safari Menu, select "empty cache".
That ought to clean up the problem.

Can you post a screen shot of that portion of the screeen for us to review? Does the question mark replace the Apple that's at the left end of the menubar?

  • Hit with Virus that executed via PowerShell Scripting. Can I disable Powershell on my network via Group Policy and what implications does that have for me.

Our network was hit recently with virus previously unknown, O97M.Crigent.  It is a nasty Macro virus that targets Microsoft Office Documents & Spreadsheets and uses a combination of Macros and Scripts via Powershell.
How do I disable PowerShell scripting via Group Policy?
Will this raise any issues such as random application or network failures or other issues?
Can I apply it to the entire domain or should I be selective and only apply it to the workstations?
Network Summary: Windows 2008 Active Directoy Server, 75% Windows 7, 25% Windows XP workstations.
    DouglasOfSanMarcos

Disabling Windows PowerShell can be done with GPO:
Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows PowerShell
From GPO Description: "This setting exists under both "Computer Configuration" and "User Configuration" in the group policy editor. The "Computer Configuration" has precedence over "User Configuration."
By default this option is restricted any way on computers.
I would be very selective when apply it at all:
Workstations - I would apply to test group of workstations first, just to see that there are no side effects before applying to all computers.
Server - I wouldn't apply it at all. I have seen too many issues when setting this policy on Exchange and other systems.
If you are using a Group Policy to define a PowerShell logon, logoff or computer script, that script will disregard any execution policy set locally or through a GPO.

my mac is infected with viruses, Safari can not normally search for constantly appear commercials and some unknown site. What to do? antivirus free program that you recommend?

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Problems with RH 8 and Windows 2008 64-bit servers with IIS7?

I have been informed that my company's servers are being upgraded to Windows 2008 64-bit servers with IIS7, from Windows 2003 & IIS6. Probably will be online in April 2011.
I have a project created using WebHelp, RoboHelp HTML v5. I have RoboHelp HTML v8 (haven't had a chance to use it yet). We are currently using IE7 on XP. Does anyone have any info on issues with RoboHelp v8 WebHelp projects running on Windows 2008 64-bit servers & IIS7 that I need to be concerned about? I thought I should convert the project developed using RH 5 to and RH 8 project, then FTP it to the new server when it becomes available.
Any helpful info would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alden

Acrobat 8 is not certified for Win7, particularly the x64 version. If you got the installation to go, the first step is to update AA8 to at least AA8.2. The x64 with XP required at least AA8.2 and I suspect that has not changed. I would suggest updating to the latest, either from the help menu (until no more updates are available) or by downloading the updates from the adobe.com>downloads page. For the latter, download ALL updates after your current version and install them in ORDER. They are not cummulative in most cases. You only need to reboot after the final update. The updates may get you going. If not, you may simply have to upgrade to AA9 or search for what others have been able to do in your situation.

  • System is affected with Virus, Need to format it.

I'm using HP Pavilion G61 Notebook with "Windows 7 Home edition" as operating system. Now my system is affected with virus. Can't able to do work on it as formally. Also taking time to open & run applications. So i need to format and reinstall Windows 7. So kindly help me in this issue.
    Toms

    Hi Tom,
    PREFERRED OPTION:
Did you make a set of System Recovery discs when you first got the system?  If so, booting from and running these CDs (or DVDs) will restore the system back to its original Factory state.  You even get a chance to Backup any documents (Photos, "Documents", Videos and multimedia files to external media IF you want).
Booting a Recovery disc requires pressing the <Esc> (Escape) key during System start-up and choosing the Boot Options (often Function key <F9>) in order to select a, 'Boot from Internal CD/DVD drive' option.  From this point the user simply needs to READ all of the Options and explore this software utility.
There will be "Next >>" and "<< Back" options for the user to navigate the various choices.  Read them carefully!  Get help from a friend, neighbor or co-worker you trust if necessary (having a second pair of eyeballs is always useful!).
    OTHER OPTIONS:
    (A)  Booting the computer into Windows' "Safe Mode" and running various CD-based utility programs to remove the Virii from the computer IS possible.  A source for some information is Bleepingcomputer.com and I have been using this recently to remove what is referred to as "Windows 7 Rogus Anti-spyware" from a few systems recently.  HOWEVER, this is not, repeat NOT an endorsement of any software offered for download from this or any other non-HP website! --- Use these third-party utilities at your own risk!!
    (B)  It may be possible to use Microsoft's System Restore to "rollback" your system to a time before the virii infected the computer.  However, this implies you are willing to try this option and KNOW of a specific date when the virii might have entered into the computer.  I have seen computers that alledgedly had a virus on them for 6 months, and I do not know of any case where a person successfully "rolled back" a system to a Restore Point older than a week or two (i.e. 7 to 10 days).
If neither of these options seems comfortable to you OR the System Recovery discs either were not created or now cannot be created due to the slow performance of the computer, GO AND GET SOME PROFESSIONAL computer support.  The options I laid out above are the least expensive choices, but paying someone else to help out is good for the user (less stressful) and supports the local economy.
Get a recommendation from a relative, friend, neighbor or co-worker on a local PC Technician they have used in the past and trust.  These days it is exactly like knowing an expert plumber, carpenter or auto mechanic!
    Good luck!,

  • Can't boot to windows, stuck at black screen (with cursor)

Hi! I'll get straight to my problem: I can't boot to Windows (Windows 10 Technical Preview) anymore after installing VirtualBox (or rather, an Android emulator that installed VirtualBox) on my system. I get stuck, after the loading animation with the blue HP logo, on a black screen (I can move my cursor around) but the login screen never shows up.
    The problem.
I'm currently dual-booting linux and windows for several purposes. My laptop came with a Windows 8.1 OS by default. Some time after the Windows 10 Tech Preview came out to public, I upgraded my system to Windows 10 (so my 8.1 is gone now). Everything's going well until I installed this Android emulator (which installed VirtualBox) on Windows 10. Everything seemed fine at first but after rebooting, Windows isn't working anymore. I can still boot to linux, but Windows just won't boot properly.
    What I've tried.
I've tried A LOT of things. The problem actually happened twice already (at first I was able to fix it with System Restore but not this time around). I have a Windows 8 USB Recovery Drive at hand, just so I can access a Windows command line. It's not from my system, though. It came with a new windows 8 laptop of a friend so I just borrowed it.
1: System Restore. This worked the first time. But now the restore won't finish and throws an error, telling me that it can't restore my system.
2: Refresh PC. "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made." or something like that.
3: chkdsk on C:\. It says it changed some files, but it doesn't really fix the problem.
4: sfc /scannow. Again, something happened, but it didn't get fixed.
5: bootrec.exe to fix BCD and MBR. Doesn't work. (as far as I know my sytem is using GPT)
6: Hard reset (remove all power sources then hold power button). Still not working.
7: System Restore again. All the restore points aren't working. It reaches a "Finished" state, but then an error comes up after. It says can't extract a specific file, and the restore point is damaged or might have been deleted during restore.
8: checking and fixing bad sectors (nope, no bad sectors on my hard drive)
9: built-in component tests. It passed all of them, except the battery test (my battery really isn't surviving for any duration longer than 30 minutes, but that shouldn't affect my OS). I didn't try the really long tests since I thought it wouldn't matter as my problem is most probably completely software (since linux is still working).
10: cry. oh please. Windows isn't working. What should I do? (
    Things I haven't tried.
1: RAM and CMOS battery reset.
    2: Reset PC.
    3: Format hard drive.
4: Test hard drive on another laptop's system.
If possible I'd like to avoid getting my hard drive wiped, since I have a lot of stuff to backup (more than 300 GB of files + dozens of linux apps and ppas), and I only have a 32GB USB drive to backup all the files I need).
    Thanks for reading.

Sorry for the delay. Wasn't expecting the "road work" signs when attempting to check back with you in the AM here.
As others have already mentioned, the prompt for file systems occurs during text mode setup. Quick or Full? FAT or NTFS? How do you know what to do?
We'll start with file systems, short and sweet. Most any OS can read and write FAT volumes without fail which makes FAT ultra-portable, and the only choice if you want to let Mac OS write documents on your Windows volume. It's also more efficient on drives of 16 GB or less. However, FAT has no folder-level access control, so any file in the system can be manipulated by any user or by any system process. By contrast, NTFS is far more restrictive. It can only be manipulated under Windows, though other systems may be able to read it. Not only do you get the access control that FAT lacks, but you also get superior efficiency on large volumes, plus the power to compress or encrypt folders and files at will (in "business" flavors of Windows only--and yes, Vista Ultimate counts as "business" even though it will be supported much like a "consumer" version).
On format speeds: A quick format is very handy if you have a large partition or a single drive completely dedicated to Windows. Because it completes in 30 seconds or less, it will go a long way toward completing your Windows install. However, in some cases, volumes formatted with a quick format may have reliability issues. They must have fixed this in Vista, because Vista can only format at the "quick" speed.
A full format tests all blocks of a given volume (as opposed to testing an entire disk unless the volume itself is the entire disk) as the file system structure is laid down. Bad blocks are marked as "used" when they are found. This type of format takes much longer as a result of all the testing, but the result is a more stable volume from the start.
Get past the formatting stage, and you'll be right as rain.

    Does the iPod work OK?
Does it charge when connect to the computer?
Does it appear in My Computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#iPod_touch_late2009
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • Windows XP on macbook pro with retina display?

I am going to be helping a client with putting Windows XP on a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display later this week.
This client has two programs that are XP-specific, and MUST be run by booting XP fully and not virtually with Parallels or other options.
So we are going to be using bootcamp.
We have the XP install disc, and an external USB CD/DVD drive from Apple.
I've found postings online about people installing more recent flavors of Windows (Vista, 7, etc) on these machines
but I haven't found anything about Windows XP on the MBPro with retina display.
Anyone have any tips to share?
This should still be possible and not a big problem, right?
Yes, I know the resolution will likely be the biggest issue, but it should still install and run, yes?
Thank you for any helpful info anyone can provide.

First off there are no programs that are XP specific and no programs, that I know of or ever heard of, that can not run in XP in a virtual machine.
Most all programs that will run on XP will run on Win 7, unless they are older programs. Those older program that will run on XP and not on Vista or 7 will also run on Win 2000 or 98SE. So as stated before I don't know of any programs that will only run on XP and no other operating system.
A Virtual Machine is Just That, IE a set of Virtual hardware. The Operating system has No Idea it is running in a Virtual Machine on top of a Host operating system. They are completely separate except for the VM using some of the physical hadware in the host computer. Like the USB ports, the network interfaces and the CD/DVD drive. And the VM software is made to allow those devices to look like they are part of a Physical computer the VM OS is running on.
So I have not idea what these programs could be that would not run on/in a Virtual Machine with XP Installed.
Please let me know for future reference.
    So your options are.
    1) Install a Virtual Machine software program. VMware Fusion, Parallels or Virtualbox. Then install Win XP into a Virtual Machine.
    2) Buy and older Windows computer that will run XP natively. It doesn't need to be that old, 3-4 years old will do as most all major PC manufacturers have XP drivers for their 3-4 year old computers and most if not all hardware manufacturers, Vid cards, Ethernet & WiFi cards, still list drivers for XP.

  • Install Captivate 4 on Windows 7 64-bit machine with Windows XP mode?

    Hi,
I have been searching the web to find out the best way/place in which to load Captivate 4 on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. Seems some people have issues with recording, others don't. I have Windows XP mode on my machine.
My question is... what's the best way to load Captivate 4 on Windows 7 - should I install to Windows 7 and see how it goes. Or should I install under Windows XP mode?
    Thank you!
    Michele

Yea it works in XP mode

Try running Cp4 in WinXp compatibility mode on Win7.  Also make sure
you're set to Run as Administrator.
I run Cp4 on Win7 without issues.  But other users report similar problems
to yourself.  In the end, it may or may not work for you because Adobe has
never claimed Cp4 was compatible with Vista or Win7 64bit.

My Macbook Pro has a black screen when running in Bootcamp Windows 7. Since I updated the mac side my windows side now starts up with completely black screen - no prompt, nothing, Cap keys still light up as does mouse and DVD drive seems to run.
Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.
I suspect the Mac update wiped out my PC video drivers but can not think of a way to re-install?
Can see the PC volume from Mac side with files.
I've looked at all the online solutions so far and have tried most of them without success. Please help!

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!
