Windows 8.1 (64) What is contained in the Machiekey folder and what would happen if it was renamed and replaced with an empty folder?

Microsoft support engineer, Mohamed Ameen, suggested I post this question/problem here.
I have a Windows 8.1 (64) PC that has a problem with a phantom or ghost Homegroup that is preventing it from becoming a part of a Homegroup on my home LAN. The Homegroup troubleshooter utility and all of the standard troubleshooting suggestions online have
been of no help.

in the way of instructions on how to completely perform the "repair" and/or the risks of causing other OS and program failures.

For this problem, you can try to use Process Monitor the trace when creating HomeGroup on XPS PC, then find the reason of this problem.

Make sure you backup prior to following the steps below:
I'd recommend uninstalling iTunes on your PC, restarting if recommended, then going to the Start button and typing Regedit and searching for anything which mentions iTunes and deleting any mention of it from your Registry as it sounds like something from a previous version of iTunes is still hanging around in your Registry, however be very careful not to delete anything else as this could result in serious issues for you computer.
Once done and all entries for iTunes are deleted from the Registry, check C:\program files or where iTunes was installed and delete the iTunes folder if still present.
Then go here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and download iTunes.

Assuming you mean that you performed the repair yourself, it would seem that you either obtained a defective screen or you did some sort of damage when you replaced the screen. You can try asking for assistance on ifixit.com, a site dedicate to those attempting their own repairs, or you can take the iPad to a shop and pay them to try to correct the problem for you. Apple will no longer touch your iPad now that you've attempted your own repairs.

Apple isnt here. this is a user based forum for technical questions. The solution is to restart, reset, and restore as new which is in the manual after that get it replaced for hard ware failure. if your within your one year warranty its replaced if it is out of the warranty then it is 199$

I'm getting an error message saying valid signing identity not found when I try to run an xcode project on an ipad. Under the orgainzer window a few icons are missing. Another issue that sort of complicates things is that I can get into developer.apple.com->membercenter, but there is no icon for the provisioning portal to export the profile.

I have had an iTunes account for a while, but never really taken the time to learn to use it. Now I have two computers, with two different versions of iTunes, with content on one that I want to transfer to the other. Or I'd like to directly access the older libarary from the new computer.

Plus I have some videos and audio CD's that I have never imported, and would like to bring them into iTunes and store on an external hard drive to keep from loading up my computer. If you place a CD into the CD drive, iTunes will ask you if you want to import it.
If you want iTunes to store content on an external drive, you need to tell it to do so, which you do at iTunes preferences > Advanced.

I have seen numerous articles explaining svchost, and I think I have a reasonable grasp of it (although basic). My favourite article so far is

My current issue is that I am tweaking a security program called McAfee Host IPS, currently running on 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 servers, and getting a lot of events associated with svchost.exe that I believe require exceptions to be configured. What I do
not want to do, however, is configure an exception that hides something that may be useful information, however there is a balance required in what I am doing.
Focusing on my current task at hand, I can confirm I have seen a large number of events associated with the below. The below is all of the information I have on the Host IPS signature in question, although I am currently digging further.
IPS Signature Name: CMD Tool Access by a Network Aware Application
IPS Signature details: This event indicates an attempt by a networked application to access, modify or execute a system program that may be used to modify the configuration of your system.
IPS Signature severity: Low
I have seen a large number of events with threat source process = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SVCHOST.EXE, and the following files, either accessed or executed.
C:\WINNT\System32\tasklist.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\ipconfig.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\cmd.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\route.exe
As the above reference lists DLLs specifically, and not EXEs, I am not sure if this is expected (but am gathering it is, especially as the IPS signature details refers to 'system programs').
I am suspecting that my best action here is to configure an exception for threat source process <systemdir>\SVCHOST.EXE and target files <systemdir>\*.*, as my hypothesis is that even if I have not seen it in the tuning phase, there are
a lot of similar benign actions that could potentially trigger in the day to day workings of the OS. I am also assuming that I will see similar in later versions of Windows Server OS.
To throw a slight curveball, we are also integrated with a SIEM solution. As this signature severity is low, it is mapped to a log action so nothing will actually be stopped, but if there are no exceptions, relevant events would go through to SIEM.
They could be filtered there, but potentially used in correlation rules or troubleshooting, but that obviously takes more space in the McAfee (ePO) database and the SIEM solution, which needs to be taken into account.
Thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated - I genuinely wish I knew more about this subject!

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

Let's start over again.
Open AirPort Utility on your Mac
Are you asked for a password at this point? If yes, enter the base station or device password that you used when you originally set up the AirPort router. Depending when you did this originally, you might have been given an option to use the same password as the wireless network. If you were not, then you have a separate password for the base station.
You need that password to be able to access the settings for the AirPort router in AirPort Utility.
If you see a window listing basic information, click Edit in the upper right corner of the window.
If you are asked for a password, you must enter the device password or base station password that you established when you first set up the AirPort router as explained above.
If you forgot the password, a Soft Reset will allow you to go in and reset the base station password. Might be a good idea to write down that password.
If you are still stuck, then the only option that you have at this point is to perform a Hard Reset to return the settings to factory defaults and then set up the AirPort router again.
If you prefer, you can also do a Factory Default Reset. It's the same as a Hard Reset except for the timing of holding in the reset button.

The last Apple itunes update from 1/24/14 was unsuccessful and I now receive an error message stating that a program MSVCR80 file is missing. What does that mean?

On January 24, 2014 I received a prompt on my Sony Vaio laptop that there was an iTunes program update ready. Since then I can't access my iTunes and continuously receive an error message stating that a file MSVCR80 is missing. A second message pop-up box states that I need to reinstall iTunes. My question is if I remove the program how do I locate my file to reinstall it and am I going to lose any of my music?

Under normal circumstances, an uninstall/reinstall doesn't touch your content. (That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times in case of disasters of any sort.)
