Windows 8.1 and Hyper-V
Hi All
I have successfully installed windows 8.1 and Hyper-V on my HP Probook 4540s having previously run Windows 8 but I have been totally unable to import any of my Generation 1 Virtual Machines as the wizard says no machine found. These all previously in Windows
8. is there a setting I have not found or is this a beta (preview) problem? If there is no work around I will have to revert to Windows 8.

I have found my own solution all be it a tedious one.
I built a Windows Server 2012 machine and activated Hyper-V (I believe a Windows 8.0 with Hyper-V would also have worked)
Installed the virtual machines from the Microsoft installation disks
Exported the Machines to a USB Drive. I found that it made no difference if I powered up the VMs before exporting them. It seems that all that was required is to install them into Server 2012 Hyper-V and then export them.
Imported the VM into Windows 8.1 and they imported correctly.
As a trial I also exported the Machines from Windows Server 2008 R2 but these machines would not import into Windows 8.1
I trust that this will be resolved by the installation wizard before the full release
Frank
Frank
I doubt that this will change in the RTM version. Import/Export has changed in 2012R2 and I expect Win 8.1 to be the same.
This was posted in reply to a similar question in the Hyper-V forum by Taylor Brown from the dev team.
VM's that are exported from Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 utilized the version 1 WMI namespace which resulted in a .exp file to represent the exported virtual machine.
In Windows Server 2012 we introduced a new WMI namespace (version 2 or root\virtualization\v2) which implemented a much better import/export model – allowing you to effectively just copy the virtual machine folder (with the VM’s XML configuration file
inside it) as well as the VM’s VHDs and then import that directly.
For Windows Server 2012 we maintained the version 1 WMI namespace which allowed for importing of Windows Server 2008/R2 VM’s on 2012.
In Windows Server 2012 R2 we have removed the old version 1 namespace which means we can’t import virtual machines that where exported from Windows Server 2008/R2.
However we can import them if you copy the virtual machine xml file and VHD’s – to do this you need to stop the vmms on the 2008/R2 server – copy all of the virtual machine files/vhds to the Windows Server 2012 R2 server and then import them.

How to share file between windows server host and hyper-v windows server ??
Hi there
I installed windows server 2012 r2 as my host windows and again installed windows swrver 2012 r2 on hyper-v in one system .
now when I go to file explorer > netwrok there is no computer name to share file or folder between them
How can join both windows to netwrok place in file explorer to share file and folder
before I try windows 8 as my host and server 2012 r2 as hyper and when I went to file explorer > network there were to pc's there . first windows 8 and second win server 2012
but when both windows are server there isn't and network pc's in network location on file explorer
please help me how can I bring them both server to file explorer > netwrok
Thanks

thanks to you both
but when we install windows server as host there is not our windows in the
Internet\Network and sharing center\ ....... and in the file explorer > network
I found it when I add server host in server manager in guest server and manage it as host server user and then share files and folders from computer management and then create a shortcut from the share folder to desktop
and the did same for guest ... add guest server in server manager in the host server and manage it as guest server user and then share it's files and folders from the computer management and create a shortcut of share folder to desktop
if host windows be a client windows so this is so easy because after we install hyper-v win-server and go to file explorer > network > so we able to see both windows and all files and folders there but if host windows be a win-server we can't see them
in file explorer > network
thanks you both again

Hyper-V on Windows 2008R2 Running Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone
I am a lone wolf developer running Hyper-V on a legally-licensed Server running Windows Enterprise 2008R2. I have extremely limited research funding.
Since I need to evaluate Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone development for the 1080p Phone Emulator, I created a Virtual Machine of Windows 8.1 Evaluation Copy RTM on my server. I am trying to create software for the Nokia Lumia 1520 Phone-Tablet.
Everything in the Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine runs perfectly from Hyper-V on Windows 2008R2, except for one problem related to my Phone development project. Networking is perfect, the display is perfect, there are no other issues except this "gotcha".
The problem appears with the Windows Phone SDK Update 4, which supports a 1080p
Windows Phone Emulator. This emulator is supposed to load it's own instance of a Windows 8.1 Hyper-V virtual machine
when debugging the Phone Application from Visual Studio 2012 Express.
This Emulator tries to start it's own Hyper-V session inside Windows 8.1. In my humble opinion, it should be possible to do this (load a Windows 8.1 HyperV Virtual Machine inside a "parent" Virtual Machine).
It presents this error message instead:
Essentially, Windows 8.1, running in a Virtual Machine, should also be able to create a Virtual Machine inside it's own Virtual Machine. That is the required design of the Phone Emulator (must be able to intantiate a Windows 8.1 Hyper-V Virtual machine to display
the Phone).
If that does not work, then I guess it must not be a supported configuration. If not, then I need to licence Windows 8.1 on a separate physical computer. Anyone want to tackle this?
+__+I have a legal, licensed Windows 2008 R2 Server with the Hyper-V Role. I then downloaded the time-limited
Windows 8.1 RTM Evaluation Version and successfully installed. It works flawlessly. Next, I installed the
Windows Phone SDK Update 4 on top of
Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Phone.
It all works flawlessly, except for one little problem.
Since I am interested in evaluating and testing the Windows Phone SDK 1080p Emulator, I must run
F5 - Start Debugging in Visual Studio in order to see my Windows Phone application in 1080p resolution. Well, the Emulator
almost completely starts up successfully, but at the last push it gives an error. This error is shown below as a JPEG.
Does anyone know which of the "Hyper-V components is not running?"

Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2 Client Hyper-V Enhanced Session Mode in Windows 8.1
Starting with Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2, Hyper-V can now redirect local resources to a virtual machine session through Virtual Machine Connection tool. The enhanced session mode connection uses a Remote Desktop Connection session via the virtual
machine bus (VMBus), so no network connection to the virtual machine is required

Could you please share your best practices for setting up a new Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V Virtualized AD DC, that will be running on a new WinSrv 2012 r2 host server. (This
will be for a brand new network setup, new forest, domain, etc.)
Specifically, your best practices regarding:
the sizing of non virtual and virtual volumes/partitions/drives,
the use of sysvol, logs, & data volumes/drives on hosts & guests,
RAID levels for the host and the guest(s),
IDE vs SCSI and drivers both non virtual and virtual and the booting there of,
disk caching settings on both host and guests.
Thanks so much for any information you can share.A bit of non essential additional info:
We are small to midrange school district who, after close to 20 years on Novell networks, have decided to design and create a new Microsoft network and migrate all of our data and services
over to the new infrastructure . We are planning on rolling out 2012 r2 servers with as much Hyper-v virtualization as possible.
During the last few weeks we have been able to find most of the information we need to undergo this project, and most of the information was pretty solid with little ambiguity, except for
information regarding virtualizing the DCs, which as been a bit inconsistent.
Yes, we have read all the documents that most of these posts tend point to, but found some, if not most are still are referring to performing this under Srvr 2008 r2, and haven’t really
seen all that much on Srvr2012 r2.
We have read these and others:
Introduction to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) Virtualization (Level 100),
Virtualized Domain Controller Technical Reference (Level 300),
Virtualized Domain Controller Cloning Test Guidance for Application Vendors,

Again, thanks for any information, best practices, cookie cutter or otherwise that you can share.

SQL Performance and Hyper-V Generation 2
Hi
Environment - HP DL580 G5 running 2012 R2 Hyper V
There are only 2 VM's on this box and the underlying storage is provided by Equalogic.
I have created 2 VM's running 2012 R2 Server with SQL 2012 Enterprise SP2 which are identical apart from one being generation 1 (imported from a 2008 R2 server) and the other being a native generation 2.
My issues is if I increase the memory to 20gb (runs fine on 10gb) on the gen2 server it will crash under load (dbbc checkdb or any other intensive operation). Gen1 server has no problems running at 20gb.
I am suspecting a numa issue but before I go down this route was wondering if anyone else has seen this. VMQ's have been disabled on both VM'sHi,
Thank you for your post.
From your description,
I see the current issue you are facing is: The native generation 2 VM running on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host will crash after increasing memory to 20 GB. Please let me know if I have misunderstood anything.
You mentioned that both of your VMs are configured with static memory, I suspect that might be the cause. To improve Hyper-V and VM performance, there are corresponding best practices, for
memory, the best practice is using dynamic memory.
Although, the Dynamic Memory feature does not help directly in achieving better performance of the virtual machines, but it allows you to balance the allocation of memory resource
dynamically. It is recommended to configure Dynamic Memory parameters for each critical virtual machine running on a Hyper-V server.
Since
dynamic memory adjusts the amount of memory available to a virtual machine, based on changes in memory demand using a memory balloon driver, which helps use memory resources more efficiently.
You can read this blog for more information.

Please let me know if there is any update. Thanks for your time.

Adding nodes to Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster..
Currently we have a 3 node Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster in production. There are about 3 terrabytes worth of VMs running across these nodes.
It is over-committed, so i've setup two new nodes to add to the cluster.
I've done this before in a SQL cluster but never a Hyper-V cluster.
If I don't run validation when adding the nodes, will there be downtime?
The quorum is setup for disk majority, everything is identical on all nodes that needs to be. Shared storage is recognized and ready on the new nodes. I've gone through every checklist that Microsoft has. I'm just curious if the virtual machines will go
offline on the current nodes when i add the two new nodes.
Everything is identical down to the wsus updates installed. From networking to storage everything is perfect.
I don't want to run validation as I know that'll take everything offline.Hi,
It is recommend to run a validation test. You can select custom test. (skip storage).
When add the new node to existing cluster . it will not bring down existing VM.

Antivirus software exclusions for DFS and Hyper-V
I am rolling out an updated antivirus solution to our DFS server and Hyper-V (Windows 2008 and 2012) and I am curious of the following:
1. What are the exclusion suggestions for Hyper-V servers? I found a URL that showed the exceptions to add but I thought there would be more for Hyper-V to exclude.
2. What are the specific exclusions to include for a DFS server? I read somewhere that there were some DFSR hidden folders that need to be included but I would like to know if there is an official suggestion from Microsoft of what files/folders need
to be excluded.Hi,
Anti-virus software should exclude Hyper-V specific files which listed in the article below:

Hi,
I am really puzzled by the following situation. I have a SCVMM 2012 R2 cluster that manages a Hyper-V host cluster on windows 2012 r2 and storage attached by SOFS Cluster on windows 2012 r2. There is 1 share - CSV1 for all VMs.
Under Fabric -> Providers/Arrays/FileServer everything is green and has status of responding and CSV1 is shown as managed.
Under Fabric -> Hosts -> Cluster properties -> Fileshare storage the CSV1 is visible and status responding, just as on the hyper-v hosts.
The error I have is that around 50% of those VM have "unsupported VM configuration" and under properties I get the error that the file share that the VHDX is running on is not managed. --> This is wrong because the share IS managed by VMM. As
I said I only have 1 (!) CSV for ALL of my VMs. If the share isn't managed by VMM then none of the VM could show a valid status. But this is what I see.
A refresh on the virtual machine gives me an error of ID12700 "VMM cannot complete the host operations... unkown error (0x8005)." On the Hyper-V Host itself for the time frame that I performed the refresh of the VM there are no corresponding errors.
The only thing I found is that all VMs with unsupported configuration have wrong properties entry in SCVMM. In SCVMM
the VM properties -> Advanced -> Availablity is set to "normal". On all VMs that work just fine the Availability is "High". I went to the Failovercluster Manager on the Hyper-V host. All VMs are visible under "Roles" and
therefor are HA VMs. So for some reason SCVMM has a wrong information on their HA status. I am not sure if this is the reason why
some are showing the error and some not but it is the only difference I found.
Does someone have an idea what could cause this behavior?Yes all of those VMs were created before VMM exists. A Cluster refresh and hyper-v host refresh runs through without errors or information. So that is OK.
Migration is not possible because of the error. LiveMigration is not available from the GUI. Haven't checked powershell yet but will do so today.
I have been able to limit the errors to a smaller number of VMs (well if you could say that). I removed and re-added the hyper-v cluster. After that about 1/3 of all VMs still show the error and all of them are on the same Hyper-V server. Not sure if this
is relevant or just by "accident". I checked this hyper-v host but in regards to storage, network, hyper-v configuration I do not see any difference to the other two cluster nodes either on hyper-v nor on SCVMM. -
Share my WiFi internet (from Windows 10 TP) to Hyper-V
Hi,
Since 1 month I'm using Windows 10 Technical Preview on my laptop.
Before I used Windows 8.1. There I had a Hyper-V. Thank of this blog(http://blog.credera.com/technology-insights/microsoft-solutions/using-your-windows-8-wireless-connection-inside-hyper-v/) I share the Internet of my Laptop to Hyper-V
I copy the hard disk of VM (with Windows Server) which I create at Windows 8.1 and I'm using it in Windows 10. The VM is working but I can't share the WiFi internet to it. I tried the manual from blog but without success.
After that I try to create a External Virtual switch. In this way the internet is not working on the Laptop and on the VM.
--------------------------------------EDIT----------------------------------------
Here is what I'm doing with all settings:
1. Enter to "Hyper-V Manager" > Select "Virtual Switch Manager" > "New virtual network switch" > "Internal" >"Create Virtual Switch" > Set name to "My Virtual switch" > Click
"OK"
2. Open "Network connection"> Select my Wi-Fi adapter and click on "Properties" > Open "Sharing" tab > Check checkbox "Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" > Select
from dropdown list "vEthernet (My Virtual switch)" > click "OK"
3. Now on my Wi-Fi Adapter I can see "Shared"
4. In "Network and Sharing Center", I have my Wi-Fi Adapter with "Access type: Internet" and "vEthernet (My Virtual switch)" with "Access type: No network access"
4.1 In "vEthernet (My Virtual switch)" Properties: "Hyper-V extensible Virtual Switch" and "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol" are unchecked. The rest are checked. In "IPv4" is selected "Use
the following IP address" but they are blank. The same with DNS server addresses
5. In "Hyper-v Manager" I'm selecting my VM and opening "Settings"
5.1. "Add Hardware" > "Legacy Network Adapter" > "Add" > In "Virtual Switch" dropdown I select "My Virtual switch" (The "Enable virtual LAN identification" checkbox is unchecked ) > "OK"
6. Now I'm starting my virtual machine and I don't have access to Internet
I see that MAC of my "vEthernet (My Virtual switch)" is different than this of my Adapter in VM
Do you have some idea how can I share the WiFi Internet from Windows 10 Technical Preview to Hyper-V? It will be brilliant if I can have Internet on both machines? On Tue, 20 Jan 2015 09:41:59 +0000, ko5monaft wrote:
I'm using client version of Windows 10.
Yesterday this question was in Hyper-V. I don't know why it's now in "Windows Server Technical Preview"
A Hyper-V moderator moved your question and has moved it to the wrong
forum. Although your question is about Hyper-V the Hyper-V forum is only
for released versions of Hyper-V. Since you're asking a question about
Client Hyper-V on Windows 10 then the correct forum to move it to would
have been one of the client Windows 10 forums.

Windows 10 as a Hyper-V Virtual Machine
Rather than install directly to hardware I installed the Windows 10 Preview as a virtual machine on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host.
I'm running 2048 MB RAM, dynamic Mem turned on. Only one processor.
So, I'm looking for others who have similarly done so. Did you/do you like it? Are you running into any issues?
For me, I've encountered the following issues:
Enhanced Session Mode: Didn't work. I hit the CTRL-ALT-DEL icon and it went to black screen. Hyper-V Manager showed it at 0% CPU. Turned off Enhanced Session mode and closed RDP window, then I was able to sign on.
A couple of hangs. Had to restart the vm serveral times. My Server crashed. I had to hold the power button down. Came back up OK, no problems since, and I've done multiple restarts on the Win 10 VM.
I cannot get the sound card to work. I get an error that "an error was detected". That's all.
Anyways, post 'em as you get them!

I did 2 separate installation of
Windows 10 Technical Preview outlines here. Both are Gen 2 VMs on Hyper-V 2012 R2. Installation went without a hitch. Joining the domain was uneventful (2012 R2 domain and forest level).
I have not had any crashes or blue screens.
CTRL-ALT-DEL is available in Basic session. It's grayed out in Enhanced session. This has been the case with other VMs on Hyper-V 2012 R2.

Intel HAXM and Hyper-V are they mutually exclusive?
Hi all, if you have Intel virtualization turned on and HAXM installed it appears that Hyper-V won't install. And, if you have Hyper-V installed you cannot install HAXM as it says that virtualization is turned off or is not present.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13285682/android-sdks-intel-haxm-disabled-after-installing-hyper-v
Is Microsoft aware of this and if so do they care? I know that developing for WP8 is great. But I also like to develop on android.
Thanks, -ja>Is it possible to get an Android Virtual Device to run on Hyper-V?
I don't do Android development, but if there's one that runs on an intel
x86 processor, then maybe.
>Can I get Windows phone emulator to run on Genymotion/VirtualBox?
I believe so, googling windows phone emulator and virtualbox, you get a
number of how-tos. I haven't tried to do it personally though.
>Or if I have HAXM running on another machine on the network with WP Emulator/Hyper-V running on my main dev box can I remote into the networked Emulator?
I don't know HAXM at all, you'd have to ask the developers of it, but I
know you can do it the other way around. Access a Windows Phone emulator
running on a machine with Hyper-V. It's a bit tricky to set up but it
works. Not sure Visual Studio could use it directly though.
