Windows 8.1 clean install

Hello, I have a X1 Carbon 2014 that came with a Windows 8.1 Pro OEM license. I'd like to do a clean install to get rid of the Lenovo bloatware and partitioning scheme. I have two questions:
1) Where do I get the Microsoft official ISO installation disc?
2) Do I need a product key to use during installation? I heard Windows 8 keys are now embedded in the BIOS somehow.
Thanks in advance

Good day.
1- Unlike Win7, there are no download links for Win8/8.1, per MS's restrictions. There are methods for obtaining an installable Win8.1 image(?) from a working Win8 installation, but I have no experience with that process.
2- Since your Gen2 Carbon came with OEM Win8.1Pro, the key is embedded in the UEFI/BIOS (MS OA3.0), and should be picked up during installation as long as versions match: std for std, or pro for pro.
Regards.

  • Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 with clean install

I want to install Windows 7 on my Equium U-400 laptop with clean install in order to save space in my C drive. The question is how will I restore all Toshiba bundled software that my laptop came with. There is a HDD Recovery folder in the second partition but I am afraid that using this will re-install Windows Vista as well. Any help or ideas?

    >The question is how will I restore all Toshiba bundled software that my laptop came with.
This software is bundled in recovery image only and cannot be downloaded from Toshiba download page. Just when you use recovery image you will have possibility to use this additional software.
With additional software I mean Toshiba CD/DVD player, trail Office version or preinstalled antivirus application.
All other stuff like Toshiba tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba download page.

  • Unable to reactivate Windows 7 after clean install - help!

    Hi,
Yesterday I formatted my C:\ drive in order to perform a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I am unsure of whether I was using 64 or 32 bit. I didn't have an install disc so borrowed a friend's retail Home Premium disc and used my OEM key to install. This didn't work and I am unable to reactivate my copy of Windows 7. Having read some other forum posts it would seem that I should have made a backup before formatting my hard drive, but it's too late now.
How can I successfuly reactivate my OEM copy of Windows 7? I am reinstalling on the same exact PC so believe that this should be possible.
    Thanks

    @lucasc ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  You will not be able to do this without damaging the recovery partition.  If you want to do a fresh install on your system use the system recovery.
If not you will install the operating system of your choice.  Before doing so make sure the notebook came with the operating system and you have supported drivers for the OS you want to install.
If not you may not be able to find supported drivers and end up with hardware issues.  The drivers are built for the notebook based on the OS that it was released with and they are proprietary.
I hope this helps.  Thank you again for posting and have a great day.

  • Windows 8.1 clean install with Windows 8 OEM key

Hello! I have a HP Probook 450 with Windows 8 preinstalled. I want to upgrade to Win 8.1, but I want to perform a clean install. Which means:  inserting the Win 8.1 DVD (I've downloaded the .iso from the internet.), formatting the disk, and at last, Windows 8.1 installation.
Will this work? I've read that my Win 8 OEM key, which is hardcoded in the BIOS, will not allow me to install Win 8.1. The HP forum users say here and here that it is possible to perform Win 8 clean install. How is with Win 8.1?

  • Windows 7 x64 Clean Install Problems

I have a Lenovo V570 - IdeaPad Laptop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor.  A week ago, my computer crashed because of an OS problem.  I bought a new version of Windows Home Premium x64, and these problems are still active, five days after clean installing Windows:
When I click "Shut Down" on the start menu, it goes through, Logging Off..., Shutting Down..., and then it stays at a black screen, with the power button on the keyboard still lit up.  This also happens when I leave my laptop on, and it goes to "Sleep".  I have to force restart the laptop by holding down the Power button, and then the computer alerts me that Windows was shut down improperly, option to go into Safe Mode, etc.  I start normally.
I used to be able to zoom in and out by putting both fingers on the touchpad, and scrolling one finger to the left or right.  This function no longer works.
My driver for "Network Controller" is missing, and I can't find it anywhere.  I have to use an external wireless adapter to connect to the internet.  I have a built-in wireless adapter, I guess it's the Network Controller, but it isn't working, probably because of the missing driver.
    I appreciate any help!  Thanks.

I had windows 8.1 and wanted to revert to windows 8 so i by mistake formatted the c:/ drive containing os and now when i try to install windows 8 i get the error "The product key entered..."
And i dont even have recovery image in my pc. I am using a dell laptop and i have windows 8 dvd given by dell which reads" windows 8 recovery media for windows product"
    Please guide me asap.

OEM keys are embedded on hardware, you might not need to enter the key in your case. I would suggest you to call Dell support here.

  • Can I use the same serial number for master suite when reinstalling after clean install of windows 8

I am reinstalling windows because windows got corupted. I can not access my computer to deactivate the software.  Do I need to be worried about not having deactivated it? I will be reinstalling mastersuite 6 after I get windows 8.1 clean installed on the same computer. I just want to make sure I will not have any problems reinstalling and setting up the adobe mastersuite after I have installed windows 8.1. I don't want to have a problem with the serial number still being registered to my old installation of windows that will have been on the same pc.
    Thanks for your help!

Your previous activation will still be in the loop, so you should contact Adobe support and ask them to reset your activations.  That way you can be sure you have the two your license allows for.  You can always skip this if you only activated once before but it will leave you with no extra activation should you find a use for a second installation.

  • Clean install of Windows 10 Retail (when it comes out)

I posted the following thread on the Windows forums but I think the Lenovo Community will help me better, I'd also like to specify that even if Windows 10 Retail version hasn't come out and Technical Preview is not enough to be able to help me, let's try to imagine Windows 10 will work in the same way as Windows 8.1 ok?
I bought a laptop with windows 8.1 pre-installed so I'm pretty sure it is UEFI-enabled, now I want to install Windows 10, a clean install, which means I want to delete all the partitions, but when I was looking through the Disk Manager and GParted (I also have Ubuntu, but uninstalling it is no problem, I already know how) I noticed there are a few partitions that I'm not sure if it's safe to uninstall, specially the EFI partition, this is how it appears in Disk Manager:
    Recovery Partition.
    EFI System Partition.
    OEM Partition.
    Windows Partition.
    Lenovo Partition.
    Recovery Partition.
This is what GParted shows after installing Ubuntu:
    sda1 WINRE_DRV (Recovery)
    sda2 SYSTEM_DRV (EFI)
    sda3 LRS_ESP (OEM)
sda4 unkown (if possible I'd like to know what could this be.
    sda5 Windows
    sda8 Ubuntu
    sda6 Lenovo
    sda7 PBR_DRV (Recovery)
Main question is: Is it safe to completely remove all the partitions (including EFI and Unknown) or could that cause problems with the UEFI boot? Will Windows 10 TP or Retail after it comes out auto-creates the EFI and WINRE partitions (and Unknown)? Or do I have to do it when I'm installing like Ubuntu?
    What is the unkown partition?
I hope you can fill me with knowledge in this area and thanks a lot for your attention

  • Can I clean install a Windows 7 Pro System Builder on a Lenovo PC with Windows 8 preinstalled?

Hi. I would like to clean install windows 7 on a Lenovo PC  that came with Windows 8 core preinstalled. I want to format the entire drive and remove windows 8 and clean install windows 7.  I already tried the clean install of Windows 7 Pro to get all of my drivers in line, and now I would like to buy a Product Key.
Would  a Windows 7 Pro System Builder work in my case? Would it work just as smoothly as a retail version? I understand that the System Builder is an OEM version that includes the Product Key, COA, and DVD) Just want to make sure before I buy the System Builder version of Windows 7 Pro.  Thanks.

    Go to Solution.

that should be retail since it seemed to be used for pc upgrades either way your new system builder key should work. those are called refresh because they re-released them sincea bug was found in thier installers. Do you have any key in the computer atm? or is windows just waiting to be activated?
EDIT: its a good copy look here>  http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links
Should you want to use the DVD images permanently, and don't own a product key yet, you can order a Windows 7 OEM or retail version from Amazon. The OEM reinstallation versions contain a DVD with a product key just like the retail versions. They are significantly cheaper, but lack a proper box packaging, and don't include technical support by Microsoft. The OEM key will work with the Digital River downloads, so you can just pick the cheapest one. Sometimes better editions are the cheaper ones, so all of the following links to Amazon offers might be worth checking. I've already tried to find good deals for all editions and linked to them here:

  • Could anyone of you please who has a clean install of Windows 8.1 on the SSD drive look at some settings of certain services (below)?

    Hi everyone,
    could anyone of you please
who has a clean install of Windows
8.1 on the SSD drive look at some settings
    of certain services (below)?
    Thank you.
Prefetch and Superfetch. In registry located on way
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\ Control\ SessionManager \MemoryManagement \PrefetchParameters.
I am interested in EnablePrefetcher and
    EnableSuperfetch REG_DWORD value.
    Just a number in parentheses.
ReadyBoot. In registry located on way HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control \WMI\Autologger\ReadyBoot.
I am interested REG_DWORD value of
Start. Just a number in parentheses.
Run dfrgui command. Go to Change settings and have a look if SSD on which is the system installed is included in regular optimalization schedule.
Registry can be accessed running regedit command.

    Hi,
Prefetch and Superfetch means that most commonly used files are stored to disk to be more quickly accessed later.
    For Prefetch:
    Disable Caching: 0
    Cache Applications Only: 1
    Cache Boot Files Only: 2
    Cache Everything (default): 3
    For SuperFetch:Disable Caching: 0
    Cache Boot Processed Only: 1
    Cache Applications Only: 2
    Cache Everything (default): 3
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\Autologger\ReadyBoot\Start value means:
    disable: 0
    enable: 1

  • How do I use existing sync key after Windows clean install?

    Hi,
I had setup Firefox Sync on my old Windows 7 install and I have the Sync Key given during the set up. I had to clean install (format C drive) my Windows.
Is there any way I can use the old Sync Key to get all my bookmarks and stuff back?

    The problem has resolved itself...
...despite spending several pointless hours trying to delete the existing BootCamp drivers without success, I finally restarted Windows yet again - and this time I was easily able to delete the existing drivers.
I then restarted my Mac, installed the latest drivers without issue and it all works just fine.
    Windows, eh?!

  • Some issues after clean installing windows 7 pro 64bit

    Hi,
I have a couple of issues, I clean installed windows 7 pro, 64bit, (vanilla) restored my license with ABR and used system update to download all the drivers. (no issues until here) But after restarting the system, I found this issues:
    1. I have to put the bios in legacy mode for system to boot. Otherwise it gives me a "no operating system found" message. Is there any way to make a proper installation for the system to boot in UEFI and LEGACY?
    2. System update didn't install thinkvantage center. (the program that stays in the taskbar). Should this be installed manually? Or system update should have installed it?
3*. I can not use lenovo driver page of my x120e. In IE it shows me repeatedly the wizard to choose my model, although I enter the correct info there. It starts all over again and again. Tried opera, I can see the drivers page, but I can't browse, or expand none of the sections. (all I can think of this, do I need java for the page to work?)
3*. UPDATE: After installing IE 9, java and flash player, still not working. Opera too. Google Chrome works fine.           What's the matter with IE and OPERA? What component do I need to make IE work with lenovo drivers download page?
Can anyone help me? Never had to deal with these issues.
    Thanks in advance
