Windows 8.1 clean USB disk

How do I create a clean windows 8.1 USB for my t540p. I've tried upgrading (which works) but there is no option to create an install disk it just upgrades but I want a clean installation. There is a work around with Windows product keys but my Windows 8 key (listed in my computer) does not work.

It's excruciatly frustrating. You can only get to 8.1 via the MS Store online update. No ISO exists, unless of course you want to buy 8.1 out right. I hear this will change in March.

The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.
All was normal until the icon for the disk stopped showing up on the desktop when I would plug it in. I rebooted the computer, and the disk icon now shows up but this new look to the finder window started as a result. The hard disk does not have this problem when I use it on another Mac running Snow leopard. Also, two other external hard disks that I use on this computer running lion 7.4 still have the normal header bars with columns that can be reordered, etc.
I have tried looking in preferences and other places but have not seen this discussed.

Well duh - I finally figured out that somehow in the View options for the hard drive, the "arrange by" option had been changed to "by date" from "none". Not sure how that happened, I had never used the "view options" menu tem before. Changing "arrange by" back to "none" gets the gray column headers and the collapsible folder icons back.

• AEBSn + USB disk, not visible in Windows

Have been using AEBSn as access point for last 6 months. Now added a LaCie MacMini drive via the USB port on AEBSn but am unable to access it via the LAN. I know this is a common problem and have checked the settings described in some of the responses to no avail.
The disk is formatted as HFS and can be accessed using MacDrive when directly attached to PC. The disk name is currently "Lemon" (so no funny characters).
AEBSn has latest firmware (7.2.1), the disk is visible under "disks" on the Airport Utility, file sharing is enabled with base station password, guest access is read & write and disks are advertised globally using Bonjour.
I have tried to access from three different PCs. The latest Bonjour (1.0.4) is loaded and is enabled in firewall (AVG in 2 and Windows in other). From Windows Explorer I can see the AEBS (properties shows it as a CIFS server) but it has no folders. The Airport Disk Agent is running in the system tray but does not detect any disks.
Please help, my central back strategy is in ruins!

Hi, I just got my usb disk working!
I got Airport Extreme (the latest one), all the firmware updates (7.2.1) one pc with WINXP. A 500Gb USB disk from Packard Bell. I want to connect the drive to the Airport and serve files over the wireless.
my trouble was that while I could see the disk in airport utility, I could not actually connect: wrong password, user etc.
As the disk is visible in Airport Utility and the Extreme station is visible in the disk management utility in the status bar, I concluded that there must be a problem outside of the Airport Extreme. Indeed, this I found to be in my network settings, which I easily fixed by installing Microsoft Client for Networks. Practically I did this by Start>Network settings right click Properties. then selected the wireless network right click properties once more. Under the General tab I checked for the presence of Microsoft Client for Networks, it wasn't there so on the same screen I click Install.. select Clients and fianlly Microsoft Client for Networks. Bingo.
I hope this helps, I spent a whole day looking around in this forum and no one has suggested this. So I do and wish you good luck! (now to see if I can get the music onto my Airport Express!!!)

• How to access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

How can I access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

...Called it a roaming network. Wireless mode is create a wireless network. I have checked allow this network to be extended. Probably need to uncheck that?
Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices.

• Windows 7 repair will not recognize USB disk

I have a system image I created in Windows 7 that I want to restore to a partition on my iMac hard disk. It lives on an external USB drive.
However, when I boot Win7 in recovery mode from the DVD, it is unable to see the external USB disk. I assume this is because it needs the Windows boot camp drivers.
How can I make these available to the Windows recovery mode?

I did, thanks.

• Is there a way to reinstall windows 7 from an erased disk? HP support states there is

Hello,
I completley erased the hardrive on a Compaq Presario CQ57 that I plan to sell. I don't have the recovery discs to reinstall Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.
I phoned HP and they they told me that although the hard drive is wiped clean, there is a partition that still houses the operating system and does not require disks. However, they stated they would have to charge an out-of-warranty fee of $59.99 for the information on how to do this. Declining such, they stated someone on the forum should be able to help.
I have searched the forum but have not found a way to restore Windows 7 on the notebook without recovery disks so far. Was HP support mistaken about bein able to restore Windows without disks?
Thank you.

Alternatively, if you can still can still read the 25-digit product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to your computer, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download Windows 7, create the Windows installation media, and install Windows. If you prefer to install Windows 7 from a USB Flash Drive, please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash Drive. Please note that you will have to source the needed drivers from HP or directly from the chipset manufacturer's websites. This method will result in a plain Windows installation with no HP customization.

• E530 Cannot install Windows 8.1 via USB

Hello
I have serious trouble with my wifes E530 and I do not know what to do anymore.
Accidently she downloaded a bad version of Chrome that contained a lot of bad stuff. As we use the computer for netbaking I could not risk using the computer without a complete refresh.
So I loaded up a windows 8.1 bootable USB, wiped the disk clean. Created a new partition and started installation.
I can get to enter language and when pressing next it starts to load the installtion. But then this message comes up:
"A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB, or Hard Disk driver. . . "
I have done everything and browsed a lot of forums to find out what to do.
I even made a windows 7 bootable USB, but then the message says "a CD or DVD driver is missing...."
I tried to pull the DVD rom from the computer and start over and stille the same. Then I thought the BIOS may be too old because there is no option to set Secure Boot.
So I build a bootable CD-rom but when using that one, it does not detect the CD. the drive spins up during boot but it does not read the content. I have a windows 7 install CD which I tested but the computer does not recognize it.
We tried to use another USB pen to load up the Intel Manegment drivers to see if maybe those could help, but the laptop just says the drivers are incorrect for the problem.
So now I am left with a former perfectly working E530.
The specs for the laptop are:
UEFI BIOS Version: H0ET30WW (1.12)
UEFI BIOS date: 2012-05-08
Machine type: 3259A3G
CPU Intel Core i5-3210M
I really need help in finding out how to get this laptop back to life.
Best regards
Tommy
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Hi,
The "missing media driver/CD DVD driver" error message is often misleading. It usually shows up due to a bad ISO download, bad CD burn, bad transfer to USB media, or just plain bad media. Pretty much never because of a missing driver in my experience.
How did you prep the USB drives? Have you reset your BIOS to defaults? Turned off secure boot when booting the Win 7 CD?
I suspect you've already tried this stuff, but if you can provide more details, maybe someone around here can come up with a fix.

• How do I install windows 7 from a USB on start up?

I hold alt when I hear the start up sound and select the usb. As soon as I hit enter, the cursor freezes and it remains on this screen for a long time. Is there a way around this?
I tried to install it through bootcamp assistant, but it doesn't give me the option to install it, only partition the drive.
Sorry about the photo being upside down. I couldn't do anything about it.

Will the option appear if I put a windows 7 installation disc into the dvd drive?
I followed these steps that would allow me to boot from a USB with my version, so I do see the option there.. is it still not possible?
Lior’s solution to no-bootup option for your USB drive Windows installation disk in Bootcamp Assistant (thanks Lior!):
If you have only 2 options in the boot camp assistant, or if bootcamp doesn’t recognize the windows installer disk when its on a bootable usb, it’s because bootcamp doesn’t recognize your macbook as a model that should install windows from a USB, its actually quite easy to fix, just follow these simple steps:
1. go to Applications>Utilities> right click on boot camp and click Show Package Conents, you’ll find a folder inside called Contents (If i remember correctly, not on my Macbook atm). Inside that folder exists a file called info.plist.
2. Right click on the folder containing the file > get info > change permissions so any user can read & write. Do the same for the file itself (right click > get info…).
3. Right click on info.plist and choose Open with > Text Edit.
4. at the end of the document theres a list of strings that contain different versions of Mac computers, the list is titled something like: “USB boot Versions”, add your Mac’s version to the string list ( MB40 ) if your version is Macbook 4,1 (you can see this by clicking on the System information App in the Utilities folder).
5. save the file and change back the permissions on the file and folder.
Now open boot camp and you should see the option to create a Windows 7 installler on a USB, and also bootcamp will look for a windows installation on any USB’s after you partition the hard drive.

• Can't see USB disk attached to other mac

I have an Airport Express, on the network is a Mac Mini which has an USB disk attached to it (to the Mac Mini).
However, I can't see the disk from any other mac that uses the Airport (this used to work)
I've looked for "disk sharing" in Preferences and in the Airport Setup Utility, but couldn't find anything.
I've also made the Sharing & Permissions of the USB disk for "Me" and "Everyone" as " Read & Write"
Any idea how I can resolve this issue?
Thanks,
Awfers

Ok, thanks for clarifying. You don't need to change any settings within the AirPort Utility, but let's double-check your Mac Mini's settings to make sure that it is both sharing the disk properly and that it's OS X firewall is not blocking the requests.
For File Sharing: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
o Make sure that the folders on your external hard drive, that you want shared, are selected in the Shared Folders window.
o Make sure that you have, at least, Everyone = Read Only set in the Users window.
o Select Options..., and then, verify that you have "Share files and folders using AFP" is enabled for Mac clients, and "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled for Windows clients.
For the OS X Firewall: System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o If "Allow all incoming connections" is enabled, verify that: "File Sharing (AFP, SMB)" is now displayed in the list.

• How do i bypass the windows password without password recovery disk

My sister has passed away & Ive been copying her pictures off of her laptop for the family & I havent finished. It logged off last night & now its asking for password & no one knows the password.. Im almost positive there is a way to go around this password but I cant seem to figure it out on my own! Please Help ASAP THANX

Here are some common methods.

Method 1: Reset Windows 7, Vista, XP Password Via Another Administrator Account

If you have another user account with admin privileges, including built-in accounts in Windows 7/Vista/XP, you can easily bypass other accounts' password using Lusrmgr.msc and Command Line.

1. Log on Windows 7/Vista/XP with your administrator account. Click on Start, type lusrmgr.msc in the Search box(Win7/Vista) or Run box(Win7/Vista/XP) and click OK.
2. When the Local users and Groups dialog appears, open the Users folder. Right-click your user account and select "set password", type a new password and click OK.

Method 2: Reset WIndows 7/Vista/XP password with Windows password reset disk
Here is the steps to reset Windows password with password reset disk, bypassing Windows Vista/XP password is the same as this:

Step 1: Login Windows with a incorrect password, it will show you a link "Reset Password.." under the password box.
Step 2: Insert your password reset disk, click the link, When a password reset wizard appears, click Next.
Step 3: Choose the drive name from the pull-down list, click Next.
Step 4: Type a new password in the new password box, and type it again to confirm it. Click Next→Finish. Then you can login Windows again with the new password.

Method 3: Reset Windows password with Windows password recovery program

In this method, you need to load a recovery program on another computer, then burn it to a CD/USB. Boot your locked computer from CD/USB and reset WIndows password offline. This is a universal password reset method.

• Install Failure: Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1.

I have problem with installation Win7 x64. Installation stops on disk selection with mesage: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information". I tried ICH9 controler in mode AHCI and RAID. Loading intel drivers (Ver:8.7.0.1007 and 7.5.0.1017) gives me masage "Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1." Details: "Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error: 0x80300001". I can see drives, make new partition and format it.
Spec:
CPU: Intel Q6600
RAM: 4GB
MB: MSI Neo2 FIR (intel P35 and ICH9R)
HDD: 2x 640GB SATA (empty)

I had the same problem. On a new build, ASUS P8Z68-V/Gen4, I a pulled a WD 1TB Sata HDD from another computer I had and put it into my new computer. The drive was previously used just as a data drive, not a boot disk. Win 7 didn't want load on it.
I followed the instructions posted by BenFreefly (although abbreviated slightly) and it worked. For reference, here are the steps;
1) After Windows gives you the error, hit SHIFT-F10 to get to the command prompt.
2) From command prompt enter the following commands:
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0 (your disk may be a different number)
clean
create partition primary
exit (exits diskpart)
exit (exits command prompt)
3) Click on Refresh
4) Windows now sees the disk as a primary disk
5) Select the disk and click Next.
From there, Windows will extract files and the install will boot several times.

• Airport Extreme - problem with usb printer and usb disk

I have Airport extreme with firmware 7.1. I try connect usb disk and usb printer with usb-hub to airport. I can't get disk or printer working. Also try connect only disk or printer without usb-hub to airport getting same problem. How I get disk and printer working with wireless network (windows pc computers)?
1)
My printer is HP PSC 1210 all-in-one ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90764&lc=fi&cc=fi&dlc=fi&lang =fi&cc=fi&y=0&x=0 )
- printer seems working fine after installing bonjour printer installing wizard.
- I get error (in windows) when I try print document from word. Error only says "error printing" in status value.
- In airport utility all seems ok. Airport see usb printer "Hewlett-Packard psc 1200 series"
- printer protocol is RAW and driver manufacture HP (also try with microsoft driver)
2)
USB disk is Targa Databox II 250
- Airport utility says "Disk needs repair. Errors were found with a disk connected to your airport base station. please connect the usb disk to your mac or pc and use disk utility or another disk application to repair the disk"
- I have connected Targa usb disk to windows pc and run scandisk and defreg. No errors found in windows. Result..no help for airport

I have a similar problem to your second issue. Tried connecting a Netdisk to the USB port of the Airport Extreme and it also said there was a problem with the disk. Have performed a low level format on the disk and Airport Extreme still complained the disk had a problem.
After unplugging the disk, my route decided to stop allowing wireless connections even after rebooting. Ended up having to hard reset the Airport Extreme and reconfigure it with my old settings to work again.
FWIW, the first Airport Extreme I purchased today only worked on 802.11a and steadfastly refused to work on b/g so had to get a replacement. I suspect Apple's quality control is not quite as good as it used to be.
