Windows 8.1 configure app listings.

The Start page has a downward pointing arrow which reveals list fo installed apps.   Is it possible to define my own headings and then move apps to the list I feel appropriate?    Fences software offers this sort of facility but on the desktop
rather than the metro style page.

Hi,
You can export your Modern UI layout to a bin file or xml file. The bin file can be applied to your OS image when deploying it to targetted machines. The xml can be applied through GPO and is forced for every user.
Either solution you choose, you can export the Modern UI layout with powershell, just use the Export-StartLayout cmdlet. More info about exporting and applying the settings, can be found here:

  • Windows 8.1 Mail App doesn't sync Exchange account on desktop but does on laptop

I was referred to this forum by another Microsoft engineer, and while I do not believe this is where this problem can be resolved, I'm following his instructions.
I have Windows 8.1 on my desktop PC and an ASUS X205TA laptop. For several months, the three accounts I have under Mail (two Outlook.com accounts and one Microsoft Exchange work account) synced properly on my desktop.
In fact, the Mail app on my desktop worked fine with my Exchange account from the first time I used it under Windows 8 in 2012. The version didn’t seem to matter – whether it was Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, the Mail app
connected to my Microsoft Exchange account simply by filling in my email address and password.
Sometime this past summer, however, in the July timeframe, the Mail app stopped synchronizing with my Exchange account. In an effort to repair it, I removed and attempted to reinstall the account. This time, it would not let me load the Exchange account, even
when including additional information (domain, server, user name, et. al.).
This past fall, I purchased the ASUS notebook with Windwows 8.1 installed, and I was able to successfully load my Exchange account in Windows Mail using just my email address and password, as well as the two Outlook.com accounts, and all three accounts synchronize
properly. When I went back to my desktop, however, I noticed that the Liberty email account was listed under my Mail app. Apparently, since my laptop and desktop configurations are registered under the same Microsoft account, when they synchronized, the Liberty
email account which I successfully loaded on my notebook appeared on my desktop system as well.
The Mail app on the desktop, however, still can’t synchronize with my Exchange account so, in effect, I’m back to where I was in July. I would also add that I'm running Microsoft Outlook 2013 on my desktop and laptop and, in both cases, all three of my email
accounts are installed and working properly.
I don’t know if this information gives you insight into what the problem might be, but it’s apparent that there’s something in the configuration of my desktop Windows Mail app that is causing the problem. It’s working just fine on my notebook.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Mail app multiple times, run the App Troubleshooter, and tried a Clean Boot installation of the Exchange account. None of these fixed the problem.
As I told the other Microsoft engineer, if this were an Exchange problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to my Exchange account in Outlook 2013 on my desktop and my laptop, nor would I be able to connect to my Exchange account using Windows 8.1 Mail
    on my laptop.
The problem is specifically with the Windows 8.1 Mail app on my desktop PC, and its sudden inability to sync with my Exchange account after it worked in every iteration of Windows 8 since 2012.
I have posted this issue in this forum as suggested, but my troubleshooting does not point to an Exchange problem, but rather a Windows 8.1 Mail app problem on my desktop PC.
    Can you help?

    Hello ronontheright,
Do you mean that only the Exchange account in the desktop Mail app can’t sync?
Please take a look at the following article.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/11/26/supporting-windows-8-mail-in-your-organization.aspx
Exchange ActiveSync can be used to sync data for email, contacts, and calendar. The Windows 8 Mail app supports Exchange ActiveSync.
Please open the Windows Store app Calendar and People to check if they can normally sync.
Please try to remove the account in Mail app and sign in again and check if the issue still exists.

  • Virtual PC / XP Mode Error outs with Required configuration: - Windows must be configured in mode 800x600 minimum - Windows must be configured in mode 'true colors'.

    Hello,
I am running Application using XP mode and Virtual PC on Windows 7. I have 8 GB RAM and more than 300 GB free disk space. When I launch application in XP, I receive following error
    Required configuration:
    - Windows must be configured in mode 800x600 minimum
    - Windows must be configured in mode 'true colors'.
    My screen resolution is  1024
    × 768
and I do not see any other options to resolve this problem.
    Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
    Ganesh

This is a thread that discusses your problem.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/12a17fa5-ddab-4480-8973-1a13bfb2e8fd/need-more-than-16bit-color-depth-on-windows-xp-mode?forum=w7itprovirt
Your app is probably calling for 32-bit color, and XP Mode with
integration features doesn't support that.  There's 3 ways around it.
one, is to enable remote desktop in XP Mode and connect to the VM with
    remote desktop.
2nd is to turn off the integration features and then you can set the XP
Mode desktop to 1024x7687 and 32-bit color
and 3rd, if you app supports 24-bit color, there's a registry hack to do
it.  It's in the thread I posted above.

  • Create a signature capture for Windows Phone 8.1 App

I am creating a Windows Phone 8.1 app with signature capture control on one of my page. I am looking for an approach using C# so that I can draw points on a XAML with Canvas control. But it seems like that InkPresenter name space is removed from Windows
Phone 8.1. Is there anyway I can get it around?
    Thanks,

    Hi edwlin,
Please try the suggestion provided by Rob Caplan in this thread:

You can capture the signature by listening to pointer messages and storing the points as they come through. You can then render them as Path segments.

  • Make clickable UI-elements for windows Phone 8.1 apps maps

    Windows Phone 8.1 App , C#
I would like to let the user add Pushpins ( which apparently are called MapIcons ) to the map and when the user clicks the newly created Pushpin some other ui-elements should appear.
But apparently MapIcons are not clickable and you can not inherit from them since they are sealed, so no luck in making them clickable.
I tried to just extend from Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls.Button , but those have not Location, probably because the do not belong to the Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls.Maps-namespace. So I can not really add them to the Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls.Maps.MapControl.Children
or Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls.Maps.MapControl.MapElements, since they will not be on the map where I would want them to be.
So how do you make a clickable ui-element that I can give a location on the map?
    I already was here
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/xaml/dn792121.aspx#showing_xaml_controls_and_shapes_on_the_map
But I don't see how I can add clickable elements to my map
I could write something like this of course
            <Maps:MapControl Grid.Row="1"
                x:Name="map"
                MapServiceToken="token"
                >
                <Maps:MapIcon>
                </Maps:MapIcon>
            </Maps:MapControl>
But this MapIcon again is not clickable and it also staticly coded. I want to add mine dynamic.

    Hi Michael,
Yes, as you said the MapIcon is not clickable, then for the workaround, please try to check the reply which posted by @Jogy in here:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25377526/windows-phone-8-1-mapicon-click-event .

  • WIndows 7 64-bit system printing to a Windows 2000 server configured as a print server

Is there any way to configure a new Windows 7 64-bit computer to use a Windows 2000 server configured as a print server ?
The printer that I would like to connect to is an HP 4240n LaserJet. I appears that there is only a 64-bit Universal Print Driver available. The server currently uses HP 32-bit PCL5e or PCL6 drivers for all other connected computers. Connection is through a Hewlett-Packard Network Port, using DLC/LLC transport for the embedded 4240n print server.
Installing  the HP 64-bit UPD to the WIndows 7 64-bit system, and then attempting to redirect the local port to the Win2k network print server has not worked.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi:
    See if this works...
    Run msconfig.
In the System Configuration screen, Boot tab, Advanced Options, if there is a check mark in the box next to Maximum memory. Remove that checkmark and save your changes.
Reboot and hopefully Windows recognises all the Ram ( minus the reserved ) after restarting.
Please give that a try, and post back and let us know if that frees up some system memory for you.

  • Is it possible to have Multiple Browser Windows for a Faces App

I have just read from another thread
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=427&thread=308725
    that states:
..the RI only keeps state for one URL at a time (in the words of the spec: "if the JSF implementation has saved state information for a tree identifier /foo in the users session, but receives a request with URI /faces/bar, the saved state information will be thrown away.").
That means that if you hit the /faces/ servlet with anything (e.g. /faces/css/mainX.css) after it has rendered your .jsp page, all the state necessary to process your form will be lost.
This must mean that I cant have more than one browser window with a faces
app at a time, I think that it is necessary to provide the funcionality.
My application is showing database tables and allows the user to edit them, but to restrict the user to one window doesnt seem feasable.
If you cant have more than 1 window then command_hyperlinks have serious drawbacks in that the user could be tempted to right click and open another window, then the application would not
work when changing from one window to another.
I have an idea but I cant see how to get it to work.
a hidden page-thread id that identifies which browser window/tab the user is on and that identifies a page-thread map that stores values such as the component tree and other things like list iterators, the problem is that if the user "clones" the window you would need to clone the map and change the hidden page id.
Does javascript know a window id that it could send?
    Any bright ideas.
    How do uSoft manage this?
    Is http the right protocol????
As I understand faces apps should be run in a browser window with no back/forward buttons and without any command-hyperlinks to /faces/... so that the user can never break the program, is this correct?
    Andy

This used to be the case until EA4 because it has been fixed. Future release will also support necessary API that gives you control over what to save or what not to.

For some reason the Apple ID window in iTunes and App Store now seems to suddenly have a character number constraint which prevents me using my 29 character Apple ID. As a result I am unable to enter the final few characters of my Apple ID which I have had for many years. Does anyone know what has caused this?

You need to ask Apple for assistance with getting back into your old ID. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to resolve this issue through the Account Security team, fill out and submit this form.

My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps on the dock are responding. I asked him to click on the apple, and drop down to "About this Mac", but that wouldn't open either. Any ideas?  If I was at his house, I would call Apple Care in a heartbeat, but am home with my sick daughter,,,  Thanks!

For starters, have him open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, select the volume (the indented listing) and Verify Disk. If it reports any problems, have him try a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. This boot will take much longer than usual. It's checking and trying to repair the drive directory, if possible. Once in Safe Boot, have him repair Permissions.
For other Disk repair remedies see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Also, have him try a PRAM Reset. At the startup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Also, is he running any AV? If so, have him uninstall it. It might be responsible for this behavior. (There are no viruses for OS X.)

or should I use SQLite? I dont know nothing about the code on SQLite...

If this is supposed to work just on the phone then SQLite or a Local database.

For small amounts of data, serializing and deserializing classes to isolated storage is faster.
Phones aren't always connected to the interweb.
Even if you are planning on using a central database on some server and connecting via services, you will almost always also need to store some data locally.
It's in your interest to ask questions in the appropriate forum for the technology you're using.
As it is, you're asking wpf developers a question about windows store app development.
    It's similar but different.
Which is probably why Magnus is unaware of local database and I probably omitted something else.
    It's not what we do.
I've written a grand total of one windows store apps.
Magnus probably has a similar level of experience.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to make backward compatibility of windows phone 8.1 app for windows phone 7?

I developed windows phone 8.1 app which is in windows phone store. Now, i want to make this app compatible for windows 7 also. Is it possible, if yes then how?

It may be that you are using non-backward compatible capabilities in your Windows Phone 8.1 app(s).
Developers that want to develop for different OS's usually have platforms with the different OS's on them for developing applications so they work on each platform.
I suppose you developed for Windows phone 8.1 rather than Windows phone 7. Therefore your app runs on a different framework than a Windows phone 7 has as well as probably newer hardware with greater capabilities.
So you will probably need to purchase an older phone that came with Windows phone 7 in order to develop for. I couldn't find documentation like the last link below (App capabilities and hardware requirements for Windows Phone 8) for Windows phone 7
from Microsoft but maybe you can.
Windows Phone OS 7.1 - Developing a Windows Phone Application from Start to Finish
    Types of Applications
The Windows Phone application platform provides two frameworks for developing applications:
    Silverlight
The Silverlight framework supports event-driven, XAML-based application development.
    XNA
The XNA Framework supports loop-based games.
Silverlight and XNA can also be combined in a single application.
The following table lists some of the criteria that you can use to determine whether you should use Silverlight or the XNA Framework for your Windows Phone application. With Windows Phone OS 7.1, you can combine Silverlight and XNA into one application.
For more information about Silverlight and XNA, see
The Silverlight and XNA Frameworks for Windows Phone. For more information about the application platform, see
Application Platform Overview for Windows Phone.
What's New in Windows Phone 8.1
Platform convergence with Windows Store apps
Windows Phone 8.1 introduces an important change in the Windows Phone developer ecosystem. In this release, Windows Phone converges with the Windows Store apps platform into a single developer platform that runs the same types of apps—Windows Runtime apps.
Platform convergence began in Windows Phone 8, which supports a small subset of Windows Runtime APIs, but which differs from Windows in many core areas. In Windows Phone 8.1, there’s so much more in common—a much larger API set, a similar app model
and life cycle, a shared toolset, a common UI framework—Windows Phone and Windows Store app developer platforms truly have become one, single development platform.
Of course there are still some small differences in behavior and supported features between Windows Phone and Windows Store apps. Some of these are the result of timing of the different product cycles, and they may not appear in future releases. Some differences
are the result of the different natures of phones and computers, their sizes, and the way people use them. We encourage developers to think in terms of Windows app development—developing for a single Windows Runtime, but targeting two different platforms on
    phones and computers.

  • How to publish a Windows 8.1 store app to cover the old version for Windows 8 app

    Hi,
We need to publish a Windows 8.1 store app which is a Universal app, and there has have a Windows 8 app in store , we completely rewrite the application and now we hope user can upgrade it from old version other than install a new one. We plan to emulate
the updating process but didn't find any methods.
do you have any ideas about this?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The scenario of the Windows 8/8.1 app is that- (VS=Visual Studio)
-If the app is build in VS2012 in Windows 8 then it will available for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users
-If the app is build in VS2013 in Windows 8.1 then it will available only for Windows 8.1 users only.
You can use the Visual Studio 2013 Express (free available) in Windows 8.1 and retarget the old Windows 8 app to Windows 8.1 by following this link
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn263114.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    The user will now get-
-Windows 8.1 app if running Windows 8.1
-Windows 8 app if running Windows 8
Basically if you want to develop/give updates simultaneously to users then use VS2012 and VS2013 on Windows 8.1 and work on both to have universal apps.
