Windows 8.1 Enterprise DirectAccess with a Windows 2008 R2 DA server

I don't suppose anyone out there is using Windows 8.1 Enterprise with a Windows 2008 R2 DirectAccess setup?
We have an existing 2008 R2 DA setup used by 50+ Windows 7 Enterprise laptops without any issues.
We're testing Windows 8.1 Enterprise and the DirectAccess functionality seems to be very intermittent, you can't use any of the Windows 8.1 powershell commands to look at the status as it's not using the new 2012 functionality but DA is there and works.
The problem is it seems to take a long time to connect, anything from 15 minutes to several hours and in some instances seems to fail to connect entirely. I can't see anything in the event logs and I'm really struggling to work out why it's so intermittent.
Cheers

Hi,
DirectAccess performance is dependent on many factors such as the speed of the DirectAccess client’s connection to the Internet, Internet latency and congestion between the
DirectAccess client and server, and the current load on the DirectAccess server. Another reason might be the type of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) encapsulation being used over the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) Internet. 6to4 and Teredo tend to have
higher performance because the encapsulation is simpler to process. Internet Protocol over Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (IP-HTTPS) tends to have lower performance because of the higher protocol overhead and the additional Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(HTTPS)-based encryption and decryption.
When examining performance issues, one of the first places to look is the display of the
ipconfig command on the DirectAccess server, which indicates the type of encapsulation based on the interface that has a global IPv6 address assigned.

  • How do you install Windows 7 on Macbook Air with a Windows 7 ISO image?

Macbook Airs have no optical drives, and I can't buy one. I do, however, have the Windows 7 ISO image. And I also have access to a Windows 7 PC. I found an article on CNET on installing from a Flash Drive, but that requires the CD. I also have a hard drive (120GB) and Flash USB (4GB), if they could help. Please help me as many programs I am familiar with are only windows-based. I am tried using open-source software like Wineskin Winery and WineBottler, but to no avail, I always end up confused with them. Please help me.

Crjohnson, I think you can really help me!
Okay, how do you use Wine? I don't want to install lots of software like MacPorts, just want the minimal software. So there are many things like Wine, WineBottler, and Wineskin Winery. What do I use for what? For example, I want to turn a windows game (Age of Empires 2 for example) into a full Mac App. How would I go about this?
I tried researching but it is so in-depth with terminal commands and all(i dont want to risk ruining my computer)
What is crossover? Is it another wine app?
Oh, and I tried Winery Wineskin...why doesn't it work? It keeps installing random things like Gecko, or Mono, but in the end, it doesn't work. Do I need the windows app's executable, or the window's apps's installation executable??
What are engines, and how many do I need to create? I think the best thing for me is to learn wine, because installing windows with bootcamp isn't worth the effort, I think, with me having only a few apps i need to run.
As for learning mac apps only, well, Windows apps dominate the market with most of applications being made for windows, especially games, with 90% market. So for some apps, there just isn't a mac version available, or if there is, it's costly. (Which you already know I can't buy things)
You probably cannot afford to buy Crossover either.  It is designed for user friendliness though, but of course Wine cannot run everything.
Yes you have to learn some things to use Wineskin.  Normally on Gecko and Mono prompt, just cancel them.  Gecko is needed if you have a program using mshtml (its basically a replacement for Internet Explorer for programs that use parts of it).  Mono is a replacement for .NET if your program requires that.  You do not want to install them if you don't need them as they will just waste space.  You can always refresh the wrapper later on and get the same prompts if you find out you need them later.
You can copy the full installed version of a game inside the Wineskin wrapper and try to set it up that way, but its usually easier to just run the installer and install it inside the wrapper just like you'd install it in Windows.
An Engine is something you download... its basically a specific Wine build made for a Wineskin wrapper.
If you do not want to learn Wineskin enough to get in and port your programs yourself, you can often find other people who have done so (at least with games).
Check out sites like PaulTheTall.com who has tons of Wineskin wrappers already made and ready to go for many games... you just download the wrapper, install the game you want in it using the normal Installer, then its ready to go.  Many you'll need to manually update yourself to Wineskin 2.5.8 though since all the older versions broke ok the OS X 10.8.2 and 10.7.5 update, and Paul hasn't gotten to all of them yet since he has hundreds (including AoE 2 i think).
There is also Portingteam.com which has tons of pre-made wrappers for games (Including Cider hacks from official games).
If your talking about non-Game apps though, you can normally find an alternative... many of which are free.

  • Windows 10 TP Enterprise Edition with the option to create an account for a child?

    Hi there,
I've installed the W10 TP Enterprise Edition in a stable VMware Workstation and tried to create another user accout. But this fails because you can only create an account with an email account. This system should handle both: creating local user accounts
and domain accounts. Creating a local user account for a child in the enterprise environment is absolutely crazy and senseless. A technical preview should handle this. If the GUI fails - ok. But the functionality behind should work. Sorry, but this preview
makes sense like a hole in my head. I will delete it from the VM. Wellcome Linux.

  • Preferences window won't display along with other windows.

I am trying to edit my preferences. It only displays a little hint of a window with an X to close it. The same thing for reporting a bug. Basically I have not been able to get one popup application window to display.
I am on Vista Ultimate x64 with dual monitors running in 2650x1600 resolution.
Basically I can't even report the problem as a bug since that feature won't display the window either. Hopefully Apple is monitoring this board.

The same thing is happening to me in XP. I couldn't even log on to this site as a window (probably asking to save my password) is popping up but all it shows is a small title bar with an X. No preferences, can't report bugs or even customize the toolbar.

No, if you have a current version of Win 7 installed on a computer and have used the Product Key to activate it.  The PK's are only good for one computer.

I have a full library in itunes.  I can still purchase form the Ipod but since buying a new computer, I can't recover the library or account on the new computer.  Old computer ran windows xp now running windows 7

Why can't you recover the account?  The account is not tied to the computer... simply log in.
The media must be moved from one computer to another, simply signing into iTunes does not cause it to magically appear.

  • Windows 2003 R2 installation failing with ORA-12154

Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise default installation, no Windows Updates at all
Pentium 4, 2 gb ram, 127 gb hard drive
    In a workgroup using DHCP
Installed Microsoft Loopback Adapter as per installation docs (which I read)
Default installation of Oracle 10g R2 Enterprise, which installs a starter database.
During the step Creating and starting Oracle instance with Clone database creation in progress at 46%, an error dialog appears:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
The same problem occured when using a static IP address. About a year ago I followed the same steps with 2003 Enterprise (not the R2 version) and was successful. I also tried installing on XP Pro Service Pack 2 and failed at the same point.
At this point I am completely unable to install Oracle 10g R2 on Windows using the default options. I even tried just installing Oracle without the starter database and then use DBCA to create a database. It failed to create a database.

    some more information
I’ve just restarted the server with its full quota of 16GB of RAM and selected both boot.ini switches (/PAE and /3GB) at server startup. I then amended the dbblock_lru_latches parameter from 128 to 64. Before I even started the database I tried running ‘ipconfig /all’ at the command prompt with the following result:
    D:\Oracle>ipconfig /all

  • When are retirement dates for certification MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician on Windows 7 and MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7?

    Hi,
So what's the current situation with the MCIPT certifications in Windows 7?
MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician on Windows 7
MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7
The certifications had previously been scheduled to retire in July 31, 2013.
Then that deadline was extended and they were due to retire in January 31, 2014
Presently, the certifications are listed on the ever unhelpful Microsoft Learning website
    MCITP page and the
    windows certifications
    page.
In typical Microsoft Learning unhelpfulness there is a bland, confusing and uninformative statement saying
"Most MCITP certifications will be retired by July 31, 2014. Please check the
    retired certifications and
retired exams pages for specific retirement dates."
Naturally, Microsoft aren't being specific about which MCITP certifications are being retired.
To be more obstructive and confusing, us poor learners are invited to check the retired certifications page, which only lists certifications that have already retired,  for information about when a certification
will retire in the future. I have seen this done repeatedly in this forum and on borntolearn.mslearn.net in reply to questions about future certificate retirement, which is totally useless and perhaps deliberately deceptive, as the exam aren't
being discontinued and there's no info about future certification retirement.
There has previously been actual helpful information on the Microsoft learning webpages with statements explaining that whilst in a transistion between the older style MCITP and newer MCSA certification for Windows 7, that both certification titles will
be awarded until x date, when the MCITP will be retired and the MCSA will be awarded only. I can't see anything like that on the site at the moment.
    I'd be most grateful if
anyone can link me to a Microsoft press release / blog / webpage that announced the scrapping of the January 31, 2014 deadline (as I must of missed this announcement)
anyone can give an update on the current Microsoft thinking about when this certificate will retire? Especially any links to announcements.
are both MCSA and MCITP certifications still being awarded?
advise what's the best way of staying up to date with multiple changes to exam and certification retirement announcement? (apart from borntolearn, which is awful and again, just directs back to the retired exams/certifications pages)
    Many thanks everybody!
    edit: formatting and spelling

Why choose a near retiring credential ?
    * Have ever you applied for a job with keyword requirements ?  Employers can be (and have been) insanely specific. (Then again that sort of gatekeeping for employment usually guarantees a fresh batch of pathological liars are your applicants, but I digress.)
    * Also could be on a time deadline, e.g. contract bid requires x number of people to be certified, CompTIA requirement deadline could be arriving, and so on.
    * Taking 2K08 exams when working in a 2K08 environment is probably easier than jumping into the next version without any access to it (other than building your own virtual servers or labs).
My current employer uses 2K08 not 2K12.  There are also 2K03 servers still in production (eventually being phased out).
I don't know what the stats are today but (in 2012) 2K08 was leading over 2k12 in market share.
I thought that's what truly drives these exams' and certification's availability.

  • Does Windows Intune come with a Windows License

Does a Windows Intune subscription still come with a Windows Enterprise upgrade license?
We've got some Windows 7 Professional PC's and some Windows 8.1 PC's and we require two things: -
      1: BitLocker
      2: Windows Intune
I don't want to have to pay to upgrade ALL of the PC's to Windows 8.1 Professional in order to get BitLocker and then roll out Windows Intune. I am hoping I can buy a Windows Intune subscription for each user, and be given a licence to upgrade their
primary PC to Windows 8.1 Enterprise - therefore allowing me to enable BitLocker on each PC.
I would really like an answer about the "Enterprise Licence" for Windows Intune.
    Regards,
Mark G Briggs - technology is a passion

    Hello,
if you wants to have Windows 8.1 Enterprise (includes BitLocker) than you need to purchase Windows Intune subscription with Software assurance for Windows for each device with Windows 7 professional.
Note:The Windows operating system upgrade included with Windows Intune with Software Assurance for Windows can only be used on the licensed user’s primary PC. However,
you can manage an additional four (4) devices.

  • Windows 8.1 cannot change password in Windows 2003 domain level domain

On several installations of windows 8.1 enterprise, users cannot change passwords by using <ctrl> + <al> + <del> keys and choosing change password.
The error is: "The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship"
Fresh Windows 8.1 enterprise installs with no patches to fully patched windows 8.1 enterprise workstations have the problem.  Backed out patches one by one and tested password change without success.  Tried various dell laptops, tablets, and workstations
but same issue.  Tried VMware guest workstation with windows 8.1 enterprise.  The domain functional level is 2003 with a mixture of Windows 2008 R2 DC's and Windows 2003 DC's.
The add/remove from domain did not help.  What troubleshooting steps should I take from this point?  Is this related to secure channel failures?  Note: did not find event log entries for the failures in the DC's nor on the workstation.
Perhaps I did not search  for the proper entry on the DC's.

    Hi,
Please find below several possible cause of error “The security database on the server does
not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship”
Secure channel is broken (Can fix by rejoin problematic client to domain)
AD replication issue. The computer account exists on one domain controller but not others.
    Duplicated SPN (seems not possible)
So, to narrow down the issue, you need to make sure the AD replication is working fine. Please run command
repadmin /showrepl * on a DC, then post the result here.
    After that, please run
set l on a problematic client, then post the result here.
Moreover, please check on system event log and check if there have any related error of the issue.
    Thanks.

  • How to add Windows 2012 R2 RDS to Existing Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server

I currently have a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server running and I am looking to add a Windows Server 2012 R2 server to it. All I see when I google the setup is only for Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS, cant find anything to integrate with a current 2008 R2 Terminal
    Server.
Can anyone help with this or point me to a blog I possibly missed?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your comment.
Yeah, agree with diramoh; as already commented. If you want user session from RDS Server 2012 R2 then you need to  install RDS License role on server 2012 R2, purchase and install RDS CAL (per user or per device) according your requirement and then you
can use user session for server 2012 R2 and also for lower version.
But as you already have Server 2008 R2 RDS CAL, then with that you can simply access lower version but can’t manage Server 2012\R2.
For more information, you can refer following document.

    Hope it helps!

  • How to install Windows 8.1 Enterprise on Ultrabook which came with basic Windows 8.1

    Hi,
I guess I'm not the first one with this question but anyway...
I've got 2000EUR expensive Ultrabook recently, and what's interesting it came with Windows 8.1. Just standard basic Windows 8.1, not Pro or Enterprise.
Obviously I needed to upgrade it with larger SSD 1Tb and install Windows 8.1 Enterprise as I need Hyper-V and other Enterprise version functionality on day to day bases.
I was surprised that I can't do so as SLIC is reverting Windows 8.1 back to basics!!!
.. so my question is - How can I can Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64Bit on to very expensive Ultrabook which came with Windows 8.1?!?!
    Kind Regards,
    Kon

    Hi,
Enterprise edition of Windows Client OS, is not available via OEM and not via Retail - it's only available via Volume Licensing agreement.
you can purchase an upgrade to Pro, via the Microsoft Store:
