Windows 8.1 explorer.exe error, on shutdown

Hello
I am experiencing a problem, after I upgrade to Window 8.1, i get "explorer.exe - Application Error" dialog every shutdown.
Which reads
The instruction at 0x42e93cd9 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.
It then only gives me the option to terminate it. Sometimes it hinders m ability to shut down my computer, other times it closes after a few seconds and
shuts down.
My computer is a ASUS X550L
Thanks

  • Windows 8.1 issue explorer.exe error on shutdown NOT resolved and painfully slow bootup

    Hi,
I have a brand new HP Pavilion Laptop with Windows 8 64bit. I just downloaded the free update to 8.1. And then problems started.
First off, the boot up time has almost doubled. Just before the desktop becomes visible, there is a 10 second period where all you see is a black screen. At times this is more than 10 seconds. Then the desktop wallpaper can be seen.
Secondly, the most annoying problem-, everytime I shutdown or restart , I get an explorer.exe error saying memory cant be read some instruction referenced memory at 0x00000000. ?! What the h-- is this ? I mean is this what we expect to see after updating to
Windows 8.1 ? This is ridiculous. There is no offical response from the developers either. This is affecting many people all over the world and there is not even any official patch or announcement ?
I have read similar posts here and none of the solutions work. Someone says edit the registry, someone says remove the bluetooth service from startup ?! nothing and stopping a bluetooth service should not be considered a solution. Why should I not be able
to use bluetooth just to resolve this Windows 8.1 error ??
Please fix this problem urgently. And DO NOT ask us to re-install windows... I mean come on.. You think people have nothing better to do than installing/reinstalling Windows throughout the day ?? Bandwidth does not come cheap everywhere in the world either.
Please release a patch or some guidelines on fixing this problem ASAP.

Hi, I have checked with that link on HP's site and for my product number it said that my laptop has been tested-Update your System from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
HP has tested your Windows 8 PC with Windows 8.1 and has created update instructions.
This is what they say. And I clicked on the Windows Store Icon >> Then I clicked on the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 Tile >> Then I clicked Download Windows 8.1 Update ( over 3 GB ) waited for a couple of days >> Then clicked next a bunch of
times >> Selected some options that it asked me >> Then waited some more >> some more waiting >> and in 2 weeks I had upgraded to Windows 8.1 >> Then the above PROBLEMS started...
So, as a request to the tech team or dev team, pls fix this issue.

  • Windows 8.1 Explorer.exe memory error during shutdown

When i upgraded to windows 8.1 when I log off, restart or shut-down an explorer.exe error pops up saying something about memory referenced at 0x0000000 could not be read (not exact amount of zeros) sometimes it doesn't. it doesn't halt the process but just
sits there and then goes away after about two seconds.... I have downloaded about 6 programs after getting windows 8.1 and all the programs are very CPU intensive (Cinema 4D, After Effects and Photoshop) which means it could be the programs or the OS or even
the account, after checking other accounts they don'tseem to get the error but it doesn't happen on my account if i just login then log off, if I launch Photoshop or something then it may or may not get the error.
Please Help As The Computer Is ONE day old at the time of posting this.
Would you recommend waiting for some sort of update or maybe uninstalling the programs or even wiping windows 8.1 back to win 8 (Not Preferred but will consider in case problem escalates)

    Hi,
Since this issue doesn’t happened on the other account, this problem appeared to be caused by corrupted user profile.
Please know that some appdata will create under your user profile, once you open one of these apps, and log off, system may fail to save files under the appdata. That should be the cause.
I suggest we follow steps in this article to repair your user profile to see what’s going on:
How to fix corrupt user profile in windows 8?

If the issue still persists, please photograph the error message and collect crash dump file, then upload here via skydrive or similar network device and share the link here for further research.
To collect the crash dump, follow these steps:
First enable app crash dump collection by copying following words into notepad, saving it as dump.reg and importing it:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\localdumps\explorer.exe]
    "DumpFolder"=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,63,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,64,00,75,\

    "DumpCount"=dword:00000010
    "DumpType"=dword:00000001
    "CustomDumpFlags"=dword:00000000
Then, open a program which may cause the issue. If error appeared, please find the crashdump file under c:\.
Also, you can try to analyze dump by yourself if you would like to:

  • Windows 8.1 - "explorer.exe - Application Error" during shutdown process

    Hi,
After I upgrade to Window 8.1, i get "explorer.exe - Application Error" dialog every shutdown.
It contain: "The instruction at 0x74fd40b9 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.
Click OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program."
(Sorry, my account can't post link or image. So i can't show you the picture capture)
When I had used Window 8, it didn't happen.
Please help me to solve this problem.
My machine is: HP ENVY DV6 7214nr.
    Thanks,
    Tan Nguyen

I am having the issue when shutting down windows 8.1.  Did not occur before the update with Windows 8.  At shut down, Pop up displays for only a few seconds.  HP Envy I7.
    Explorer.exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0xa73640b9 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to termintate the program.
When I start the PC, and shut it down after a few minutes of running, this error does not occur.  Only after the PC has been on for awhile and I have used several programs.
And for those of us unfamiliar with creating a Reg entry, the instruction are not very clear.  Once I create this text file...what do I call it and where and how do I insert it....?
UPDATE Problem fixed:  I followed the suggestions of a Windows 8 clean boot from Microsoft.
After going through the running applications one by one, I finally isolated the problem on my HP Envy to the Bluetooth Application.  I disabled the Bluetooth task in Startup and made sure it did not load. Afterward, no more Explorer.exe - Application
Error when I shut down the PC.  This program is a Ralink Bluetooth driver and exe. program running on startup.  I am not sure if HP has offered an updated driver for it as of yet.....

  • Windows 8.1 - explorer.exe during shutdown/restart process

Hi Microsoft Support Forums Users! Okay, so here is my problem, and yes I realize that I have posted this problem before, but it was never resolved. Everytime I reboot or shutdown my computer, I get a message saying "Explorer.exe - Application Error
The information indexed at 0x0000000 could not be *I forgot after this*
Press OK to quit the process
    Press CANCEL to continue"
If I press OK, it shuts down just fine
If I press CANCEL, it shuts down just fine
If I don't press anything, it shuts down just fine, and the box goes away on it's own. At first, I had it fixed because I learned that any sync services like Google Drive and Dropbox cause this issue, and uninstalling them fixed the problem. Then it came back
on it's own, and I can't figure out how to fix. I did try disabling the DLNA Service thingy in registry editor, and that didn't do anything. I don't have a NATIVE bluetooth driver, but I DO have a bluetooth USB, which it installed a bluetooth driver with it.
I haven't tested it yet, but I saw that I needed to disable the driver on startup, which I did. So I'm wondering if there is any fix to this issue. ANY support would be great. Thank you!

  • Windows 7 explorer.exe Error "No such interface supported"

Hello, i have encountered a problem with the Windows 7 RC. I have instaled it a while back and it seemed to work ok.
Yesterday I installed IE 7 Standalone . The newly instaled IE7 did't work so i uninstaled it.
I think that the previous operation messes something up in the registry because now when i try to duble click any folder i get : explorer.exe "No such interface supported". The same thing happens when i try to open Control Panel, or Add Remove Programs and other System utilities (the title zone reads something like : "::{26EE0668-....}\0\::{...}")
If i right click a folder and select open it works ok.
I have sfc /scannow but with no success.
Unfotunately i haven't made a system restore point previousely.
Is there any way i can fix the problem or must i reinstall?
    Thanks.

  • Windows 8.1 explorer.exe crashes EVERY time I open a window

I upgraded from win8 home yesterday and notices I was getting errors when using windows to copy files from my laptop to computer over my wifi.
Today, I was working fine and started gettingMicrosoft Visual C++ Runtime Library "Runtime Error" and explorer restarted, I rebooted and then on all accounts I logged into, I got no error messages - just explorer restarting. I was unable

    Please help

    Hello,
    Please download this
ZIP file and extract it. Once extracted, double-click the REG file to import it into the registry. Once done, this will enable creation of crash dumps when Explorer crashes. So, the next time this happens. you should fine a DMP file on your desktop. Compress
and attach the file here. Having the file will help us identifying the cause of the issue.

  • Searchindexer.exe and explorer.exe errors

A few days ago I uninstalled Norton with Revo Uninstaller and installed malwarebytes pro. I restarted my computer only to find that approximately every 3 seconds, explorer.exe crashed and restarted. This went on for about 3 days. The event viewer showed
the "The Windows Search service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 7864 time(s)" message that I've seen in other threads.

Here's what I've done so far.
ran malwarebytes full system scan - found a few problems but after fixing them the main issues persisted.
ran sfc/ scannow (7-8 times... found issues at first but now returns the message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.")
    Set 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\SetupCompletedSuccessfully' from 1 to 0
left computer on overnight (windows explorer still crashing every few seconds)
hard reset by removing the battery. Now windows explorer won't load at all. (no desktop, no modern UI or Taskbar)
attempted to rebuild the index, which didn't work.

  • Windows 8.1 "explorer.exe" gradually slows down - Observation

Hi, I posted a question a year ago about Windows 8.1 gradually slows down issue, and it seems still not being solved. I recently found some new clues about this, hope it can be useful. (Please read the original post first
since it contains basic descriptions of the issue:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f9ab40a8-6681-4c66-bdbd-9de7b2fb021f/windows-81-gradually-slows-down-after-hours-speed-returns-normal-if-restart-explorerexe?forum=w8itproperf)
This issue is found to be somehow related to total Page Faults of explorer.exe since it starts. The majority of page fault is created by desktop background slide show. On my laptop, the slide show is set to randomly switch between 53 jpegs
(mostly 1920*1080) every 10 seconds. The Page Fault Delta of explorer.exe is usually 2 per second when not doing anything, and tenth to hundreds when there are some actions. But at the instance when the background is switching, it will peak to a value
    between 13,000 and 30,000.
I don't know if this value is normal or not, but when the total Page Faults reaches about 20,000,000, a slight slow-down can be observed by moving your mouse up and down on the favorite bar items in IE (the right bar shown when pressing Alt+C
in IE), a slight lag can be observed. The slow down (slightly) of normal windows can be observed when Page Faults reaches about 40,000,000. At that time, the mouse lag on favorite bar items becomes much more obvious. After another few hours, the slow-down
    will become more serious.
I tried to disable the slide show by only using one background image, the total Page Fault stays low and the slow-down issue does not occur after one day (the Page Fault after one day is also far less than 20,000,000). That's why restarting explorer.exe
can temporarily fix it. I tried it on 2 other Windows 8.1 computers and get the same results. Maybe there is some memory allocation or fragmentation problem building up? One thing I don't know is that if this is caused by the background slide show itself,
or if explorer.exe in general will slow down after experimenting enough page faults.

    Polyhedron,
This main reason of this issue is not the Windows system. A page fault occurs under these situation:
    1. A program requests an address on a page that is not in the current set of memory resident pages.
    2. The virtual memory system has become unstable because of a shortage of physical memory (RAM).
    3. The virtual memory system has become unstable because of a shortage of free disk space.
    4. The virtual memory area is corrupted by a program.
    5. A program is attempting to access data that is being modified by another program that is running.
Please refer this blog to determine it's hard faults or soft faults.
    The Basics of Page Faults
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2008/06/10/the-basics-of-page-faults.aspx
In addition, from your description, since the background slide itself is without problem, I suspect the root is your ram. Try to increase the amount of memory or reduce the cache size for test.

It does not offer me a solution and restarts explorer. I also randomly get the message C:\ProgramFile\Adobe\AdobeVersionCue\Client\VersionCue.dll Specified Module could not be found. From what I have read online, it has someting to do with the adobe creative suite. The only Adobe I have had was a trial version of CS3 when I took some digital media classes in college.
I do have an Uninstaller for CS in control panel. When I select it and click uninstall, nothing happens.
This is getting very annoying and I cant find anyway of fixing it. I read that it may be missing files, and downloaded the files that were said to fix the problem(version_cue_cs3_server_310) and (vc_cs3_client_310) when I run these it says installation unsuccesful, product could not be found.
I have no clue where to go from here, any help would be highly appreciated....

Run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, terminate the various Adobe associated processs in Task Manager, then get rid of the whole mess by deleting all Adobe folders. CS3 is simply not 100% compatible with Win 7/ Win 8 and ttempting to use VersionCue makes matzetrs worse. If you ever attempt to reinstall at all, disable those components.

The computer exceeds the prerequisites list and error returns after a week after it is re-installed.

The last time it gave the error I uninstalled, ran the cleaner, ran Windows updates and re-installed. The error returned in about a week later.

    Hi user17625,
I believe the problem is related to the Datalogging and Supervisory Control Module.  Are you using that?  If not, try uninstalling it.

  • Explorer.exe Application Error

    Hi.
(Sorry if this is in the wrong category.)
Just today, I downloaded a Windows update(it said I had like 150+ things to install, so I did) Well, that's where my problem began. Once I did that, I turned my laptop on and right after I type my password in and click enter, I had an "explorer.exe"
error pop up saying that the memory could not be read. The WHOLE screen is black, only my cursor was there. I couldn't see my desktop, taskbar, nothing. I could do CTRL+ALT+DEL to get into the task manager though.
I have read literally EVERYTHING I could find on the internet, and nothing has solved my problem. It's quite tricky because most of what I have read has told me to boot in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and safe mode with command prompt, all to no
avail. When I try, the same error pops up there too.
I started up my computer and did F8 to get to the system repair, which also did not work. It said there was nothing wrong with it.
I tried multiple system restore points, all which did not work. I got an error for all of them saying this:
System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
    Source: %SystemRoot%\Registration
    Destination: ComPlusStaging
I have tried to do the SFC /SCANNOW which said that there was nothing wrong with my computer.
I'm completely out of ideas on how to fix this and I would really appreciate the help.
    Thanks in advance!

After I clean install of Window 8.1, i get "explorer.exe - Application Error" dialog every shutdown.
    Hi,
Did you mean that this problem occures as soon as Windows clean installed? If so, it may be Windows installation ISO or RAM problem. Since you said Windows 8 works normally, it should be Windows 8.1 ISO problem.
However, if this problem occures after you install some applications, it should APP problem, not system.
