  • Windows SteadyState 2.5 Is Now Available!

Windows SteadyState 2.5 Is Now Available!
We are pleased to announce the release of Windows SteadyState 2.5, available in 9 languages from the Microsoft Shared Access Site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/sharedaccess
Providing solutions to help manage shared computers has been a consistent request from partners, end users around the world.  Microsoft has a very compelling solution with SteadyState enabling our shared access partners to protect shared access computers by cleaning the system with every restart, making them easier to manage and protect. It also restricts users from accessing system settings and data, preventing inadvertent or malicious damage, and thus, improving the up time of these PCs.
Besides offering excellent desktop security, SteadyState is user-friendly and reliable, it reduces downtime, is easy to maintain, and is free of charge to genuine Windows XP and Windows Vista customers.
SteadyState is a great solution for schools, libraries, families, internet cafés, telecenters, rural kiosks, and community centers, providing better computer access to underserved markets where non-technical managers are often responsible for shared computers.
New features in SteadyState version 2.5 include the following:
    •       Full support for Windows Vista
    •       Full support for Internet Explorer 7 and tabbed browsing
    •       Overall improved performance
    •       Faster booting
    •       Faster system caching
    •       Remote management of Windows Disk Protection through scripting
    •       Improved importing & exporting  of user information
To learn more, or download SteadyState 2.5 go to:
     http://www.microsoft.com/sharedaccess

I have a major gripe about the instructions for SteadyState.  I have gone over the handbook and each and every time I read it, I come back with more questions than answers.  Very frustrating.  I have two major issues I would like to resolve.
The first is that when I imaged drive when SteadyState was installed, I could not open my Sophos anti-virus any longer with the admin account.  I kept getting message saying I was not part of Sophos Administrator group, which I was.  I even removed
and re-added my user to the group, and it did nothing.  Uninstalling did not let me in either.  What a nightmare!  What good is it to install something if I cannot do something as simple as opening an installed program to check settings or quarantine?
Second major issue is the whole ambiguosly confusing explanation of User accounts in the handbook.  What a crock!  If I set up the computer, add the users and setup each profile before installing SteadyState, then install SteadyState, there should
be no User restrictions except what I say after the install.  For instance, I only tell SteadyState to not allow users to save to C:\ drive.  That should mean any user, non-admin, should not be able to save to the drive.  Period.  When
reading the handbook, it goes on and on about shared users, shared accounts, blah blah blah.  Do I have to go into SteadyState and change User accounts no matter what?  If so, that seems like a real nightmare to setup over and over.  Does that
mean with that simple protection setting of no saving to drive, I need to also go and create User accounts in SteadyState as well so I can do something as simple as having the desktop wallpaper from the original setup show up for the user?  Will
the screen saver settings stay the same, or do I have to go into SteadyState and change that as well in User settings?  Which, of course, will create a whole new profile for the user, which is NOT what everyone really wants.  Can't we just install
SteadyState and say no saving to drive and leave the disk protection, etc. off and be done with it?  It sure does not seem like it.  Maybe we are just idiots here, but it is no help whatsoever for me to read this handbook again.  Since one cannot
talk to someone for free, not sure what else to do.  We used this software before for 66 computers in one of our labs, and after installation, we wanted to simplify the setup as much as possible due to continual issues with users not being able to do
this and that even though they were supposed to have "permission" to do so.  No internet on these machines, just wanted to prevent users from saving to drive to prevent drive filling up and to allow the drivers we installed on admin account to work when
non-admin user plugged in USB equipment into port.

  • Can't boot from windows 7 usb installation media

When trying to boot from windows 7 usb installation media no efi boot option availiable. Using "boot from efi file" option whith each and every .efi file on installation media results in a message saying "The selected boot device failed. Press <Enter> to Continue".
USB installation media created using original windows 7 iso image and couple diskpart commands(resulting in clean flash storage with a single active primary partition) plus simple copying of the iso image's contents on usb flash.
Enabling/Disabling SecureBoot doesn't have any impact whatsoever.
Installation boots from aforementioned media successfully when CSM enabled, though i would really prefer installing Windows 7 in uefi mode. Which microsoft claims Windows 7 supports.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
PS: my disappointment in this particular HP notebook is unspeakable. Aside from issue of the current topic, It keeps defaulting to windows boot manager when dual-booting windows & linux no matter what i do, and windows 8.1 Pro is constantly BSODing whenever i try to run fullscreen games on high-performance GPU whith every graphics driver i could possibly install (including both hp's own and amd's). Found silly workarounds for both of these issues, however still hate HP treating it's customers that way.

Booting from USB 2.0 port or DVD with SecureBoot disabled gets me to a screen saying "starting windows", just before the actual setup begins and then system simply hangs. Still unable to install. Thanks for your suggestion though.

  • Windows 8 Consumer Preview Downloads Now Available

For those of you interested in getting an early handle on what Windows 8 has in store, Microsoft has made the much anticipated Consumer Preview version available today...  Note that this is free, "beta" level software, and WILL expire, so don't expect to just download and use it forever.  Ultimately they're going to charge $$$ for it.
    Main page:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/consumer-preview
    ISO images available:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso
Windows 8 Server available to Technet subscribers:  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/hh442904
I'm in the process of downloading ISO images now, and will be setting up VMware virtual machines in which to test the various versions.  I will be interested to see how Photoshop works with it (it mostly worked with the Windows 8 Developer Preview version, with just a few glitches).
Note that these downloads are all quite huge (multiple gigabytes).

Generally speaking, Microsoft seems to be trying to bridge the "touch screen tablet" market with the "desktop computer" market, all in the name of opening up their own shiny new App Store.  I don't know whether they're going to pull it off, but Apple has become a world economic power with theirs.  It's almost scary to think what Microsoft will be able to do with theirs.  Sounds like opportunity knocking for Windows developers.
The Windows 8 Metro Start screen, complete with its flat, styleless tiles, has replaced the Start Menu in Windows 8, and there's no Start button at all.  I give it a month at most before someone like Ivo Beltchev, who created the Windows 7 add-on "ClassicShell" package, creates software to restore a workalike to the Windows 7 menu.  I've tried the current version of ClassicShell already with the Windows 8 developer preview and it doesn't seem to run, though I haven't gone to the ClassicShell forums to see whether there's a workaround.
But using the Win key to pop over to the Metro Start screen, which is the start menu replacement, all the functionality is still there, and there are some advantages.  For example, a number of known bugs in Windows Explorer have been fixed, and they've integrated ribbons into Explorer in a way that actually makes some sense.  So far everything I've tried to run has worked - I get the impression either compatibility was very high on their list, or they haven't done much to the "traditional" APIs.
Oh, and they've integrated their own anti-malware solution, so there will be no more need for 3rd party packages.
Interestingly to me, after half a day of testing and getting used to it (and having run the Windows 8 Developer Preview before that for months), the whole Windows 8 system so far feels lighter and more efficient that Windows 7.  There are fewer processes running, they seem to take up less memory, and just a lot of things seem more polished.
I'm guessing there's just enough "gee whiz" here to make even people who are relatively happy with Windows 7 want to upgrade.

  • SQL server 2008 Installation media

    HI all,
I am trying to install SQL server 2008 express, and in the "SQL Server Installation Center" i select "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or Add features to an existing installation" After selecting that option a window pops up and prompt me to "Browse for SQL Server 2008 Installation Media"
Now, what exactly is "SQL Server 2008 Installation Media"? how am i suppose to locate/browse the installation media on my computer?
i am totally new to SQL server and i am self-learning it from a book, the problem is that the book does not explain where to browse for instillation media!
    my system info:
    Windows 7 Home premium
    64-bit OS
    AMD 2.60 GHz
    6.00 GB RAM

This is a solution for Windows 7 users who used the Web Platform Installer (I'm going to call it WPI).
1 - Make sure you have power shell installed.
2 - Install the sql 2008 SP1.  google it and download it.
    Now comes the detailed part...
You have to get a hold of the installation files without using WPI.   The WPI stores the installer executable on your computer and you have to run it and then get a hold of the directory it extracts before it deletes it.    You need to locate the WPI installation file and then run it manually.  Mine was located at...
    C:\Users\**username**\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\installers\SQLExpressAdv\12A6B9C2237817DEEEB3DCE22AFFA25B6794850C
Of course you substitute your own username.   You may need to reveal hidden folders.   If you can't find it try running a search for the SQLExpressAdv folder.
In that folder you will find a file named "SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe" or something close to it. Run it and either on the first or second step you will see it extract a bunch of files.   Don't go any further after it runs that extraction.   Go to that folder and copy all the contents it extracted to a new folder and whamo.   That's where you will point your sql browse box to.
Now you can uninstall, set up servers,  whatever it is you were trying to do.

  • [SOLVED] USB Installation Media Boot Problems

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble creating a live USB stick that my new (to me) HP Elitebook
2730p laptop can boot successfully. Here is what I've tried so far:
    1. dd with the latest stable Arch installation media
    In other words:
    # dd if=/path/to/archlinux*.iso of=/dev/sdb
Result: I can boot with the USB stick on my old Dell laptop (which is running
Arch) without issue, but can't with the new HP. The BIOS will freeze if the USB
stick is inserted, and will only unfreeze after I remove it.
    2. dd with a recent Arch installation media snapshot
    The snapshot is ``archlinux-2012.06.05_04-00-01-core-x86_64.iso''. I
install the image to the USB stick with the same dd method above,
and I get the same behavior: works fine on the old Dell, but freezes the BIOS of
    the new HP.
    3. dd with an old lubuntu iso
This time, I used an old lubuntu iso
    (lubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso) with dd. This method
worked without a problem -- both my old Dell and my new HP would boot it without
    complaint.
    3. unetbootin with the latest stable Arch installation media
Creating the USB stick with unetbootin allows me to boot the stick with the new
HP, but the boot fails to the ramfs prompt after ``Waiting 30 seconds for device
    /dev/disk/by-label/ ...'' (notice how there's nothing after ``by-label/'').
Adding ``vmalloc=448M'' to the end of the unetbootin boot entry makes no
    difference.
    4. Image Writer for Windows
The ``USB Installation Media'' wiki page suggests using ``Image Writer for
Windows'' to create a bootable USB stick. I tried this method using Windows 7
Professional, and the result was the same as attempts 1 and 2: the USB stick
    freezes the HP's BIOS.
    Other notes
I've checked the md5sums of all the isos I've tried
I've updated the BIOS on the HP laptop
I've used the same USB stick for each of the above situations
The new HP laptop does not have an optical drive, and I don't own an
    external one
In attempts 1, 2, and 4, I noticed that cfdisk shows that the partition
that contains the installation files has both the ``Bootable'' and ``NC'' flags
set. The cfdisk man page says that the latter flag stands for ``Not Compatible
with DOS or OS/2''. I can actually remove this flag by using the ``Maximize''
option in cfdisk, which actually makes the USB stick bootable by the HP
computer's BIOS, but the boot eventually fails to the ``ramfs prompt
thingy'' after saying ``ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201108' found, but the
    filesystem type is unknown''
In attempt 3 (the lubuntu one), I noticed that cfdisk shows a bit of free
space in front of the partition that contains the lubuntu files. The ``NC'' flag
is not present when I run cdisk.
My current theory is this: I believe my new HP's BIOS is unhappy with the
``isohybrid-nature'' of the Arch installation media. Is there any way I can
confirm this, or obtain ``non-isohybrid'' Arch media?
As you might imagine, this has been pretty frustrating. Any help would be
    greatly appreciated!
    Daniel

Duh. That's for booting it from RAM (with MEMDISK) in case it doesn't map the entire file, which for some reason it didn't for the i686 iso on my computer. I probably should've specified it when I wrote the article. I'll add it tomorrow morning.
Speaking of which, have you tried it?
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … O_from_RAM
Because you only seem to be using dd ("Image Writer" is the same) and Unetbootin (which had various problems since forever). The correct syntax for dd is:
    $ sudo dd if=archlinux.iso of=/dev/sd[x]
Warning: Make sure to use /dev/sdx and NOT /dev/sdx1. This is a very common error!
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … _USB_drive
Haven't tried the ``Boot the entire ISO from RAM'' method yet. I'll give that a shot next.
The ``Boot the entire ISO from RAM'' method worked like a charm! Thanks,
    DSpider!

  • Installation Problem - Doesn't Get Past "Verifying Installation Media"

Using VMWare, I've segmented our working 7.0 LiveCycle server with another instance of Windows Server, etc., and I'm trying to install the LiveCycle ES Pre-Release to that new image. I've installed jdk1.5.0_11, and after running "win_livecycle8_setup.exe" per the instructions, the installation routine displays "Verifying Installation Media" ~ now running for 18 hours. In the Task Manager, "win_livecycle8_setup.exe" is running and doing something, but it won't continue with the install. Ideas?
Thanks for your help in advance!

After talking with tech support, you need to retain the root directory (in my case, "8.0.3190.1.380442.16_JBoss_EFGJ_DVD") when you extract the installation software. I had re-labeled this to "LiveCycle ES Install" so that we knew what it was in our network folder, but the installation software didn't like it. After renaming it back to "8.0.3190.1.380442.16_JBoss_EFGJ_DVD", the software installed successfully.

  • Windows 7 Installation Media Only Boots into Recovery

Ever since I've updated to Windows 8, I have been really pleased. Everything works fine but when I was automatically updated to windows 8.1, I wasn't happy. I mostly use my PC for gaming and emulating my favourite classic game consoles. But windows 8.1 either
doesn't allow games to play, and makes my emulators run at 15 FPS (normally they run at 55-60). And now, I cant install Graphics drivers! I used to be able to on windows 8. 8.1 will not let me run any of my old Windows 7 Apps either,
So, after spending hours backing up my date, ready to start a fresh windows 7 installation, I figured out that I cannot upgrade, or even start the installation from the USB drive!
I had lots of issues with Windows Vista and used the same installation media to fix the OS. Now, the installation ONLY boots into recovery mode!
Luckily, I use Debian KDE on the side, So I am able to use my computer, but not play any games.
Is there any way to have the installation media boot into Win7 Setup?

    Hi,
Could you provide with a screen shoot?
Please test the USB drive in another pc.
If it is the same issue, it would be caused by the USB  drive.
And then follow the steps to create a bootable USB drive.
