Windows 8.1 laptops losing connect to network share

Good Morning,
We have a few laptops that seem to be able to connect to our network file share and then al of a sudden, its unable to find or access this file server.  Trying to isolate what the issue could be.  I am going through GPO setting to see if something
is misconfiguration. I know with Windows 7 there used to an excel spreadsheet that explained what settings did what for different systems. The logs do not seem to be providing much help.

Neeskokotywak,
If you haven’t already, try connecting to your share by IP address.
If this works and stays connected, it’s almost certainly DNS issues that you’re having.
It’s also worth trying a few commands on the laptops experiencing these issues.
Press your Windows key and X simultaneously and select Command Prompt (Admin).
Make sure to choose the Admin option as you’ll need elevated privileges for some of these commands.
Enter the following commands:
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew
ipconfig/flushdns
netsh winsock reset
You didn’t mention what method you were using to connect to your file share but more information on creating a shortcut to your network share can be found on
this webpage.  I hope this helps!

  • Losing connection to network shares

I have a 2TB Western Digital NAS which, until recently, has worked with my Mac (2013 Mac Mini, Mavericks 10.9.3, 16gb RAM) without a problem. I keep all the media for iTunes and a Roku 3 (which talks to Plex Server on my Mac) on there. It mounts from the network as /Volumes/Public.
I am currently finding that whenever I leave my Mac for a few hours - say I go to work for example, or go to bed - that when I come back to it, it has dropped the volume. If I open Finder (which, if the drive has disconnected, seems to take anything up to 30 seconds to actually appear), the drive still appears under the Shared section of the sidebar. If I click on the drive the share appears, if I double click on the share it re-establishes no problem. A few hours later it will be gone again.
I've tried re-setting all network settings and created a "Home" location instead of using Automatic but this doesn't seem to have helped. I don't have any settings to allow the computer to sleep - my monitors go off but the computer stays awake. It also doesn't matter whether I connect to the drive through AFP or SMB - same problem. I'm actually wondering if my Mac is dropping off the network altogether and losing the NAS is just the most visible symptom - but surely it should automatically reconnect if this happens?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Trouble connecting new Windows 8.1 Laptop to Bigpond home network

We have just purchased a brand new HP laptop.  It's a mid range machine, 750 gig HDD, 8 gig ram, Intel Core i5 etc running Windows 8.1.  When going through the inital set up procedures after taking it out of the box we can't get it to log on to our Bigpond wireless home network.   You can easily search for and locate our SSID amongst other weaker signals in the neighbourhood.  Upon selecting our network the machine asks for the WPA which we enter exactly as it appears on the Bigpond card - capitals for the letters and no spaces between the characters.  The machine then attempts to connect before returning with an error message of 'cannot connect to network' or similar.  We have quite a number of other devices connected to our wireless network including smart phones, other laptops running windows 7 (and even XP), Ipods, Ipads, Playstation 3, a ethernet connected desk top etc etc.  None of these other devices ever gave trouble when initially trying to connect them to our home network.  It was always just enter the SSID and then the WPA and away you go.  I have rebooted the modem and even done a full reset on it where you have to enter all user names and passwords etc from scratch but to no avail.  I thinking there is maybe some glitch in our new laptop's operating system either inherent with windows 8.1 or a fault with our particular machine.  Any suggestions would be gladly welcomed.

Good morning. The Windows 8.1 bug raises it's ugly head again. There is an issue with windows 8.1 that is being worked on at the moment by Telstra/Microsoft to get this problem sorted out, in the meantime try this work-around: Change DNS settings to Google DNS in Windows on your Windows 8.1 laptop - Open Control Panel  - Click Network and Internet  - Network and Sharing Center  - Click Change Adapter Settings.- right click over the network connection and click on Properties Ethernet connection = Local Area ConnectionwiFi connection = Wireless Network Connection  - Select the Networking tab- click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click on the Properties button- click on Advanced and select the DNS tab.  If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and delete them.   - Click OK. For Google Public DNS, select Use the following DNS server addresses below :- Preferred DNS server  : 8.8.8.8 Alternate DNS server  : 8.8.4.4

  • Windows 8.1 laptop cannot connect to the internet using USB Mobile Broadband stick.

I bought a new laptop and it came with Windows 8.1 installed. Well, things worked perfectly until I wanted to connect to the internet using my mobile broadband USB stick. I installed the software that came with the stick, and my laptop recognize
the stick but I still cant connect to the internet. The stick workes perfect in my Windows 7 and Windows 8 laptops, but IT DONT CONNECT WITH MY WINDOWS 8.1 LAPTOP. What can I do to troubleshoot this???
HOPE I AM SPECIFIC ENOUGH THOU...

    The PC Repair Guy,
If you haven't already, verify that you can connect to the internet through some other means such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet with your laptop to rule out any network setting issues.  If you are able to connect successfully to the internet, use that opportunity
    to make sure you have
Windows 8.1 Update installed as well as any other applicable updates your laptop may require.
You may also want to check the
Windows Compatibility Center to make sure that your device is compatible with Windows 8.1.
Another possibility is that the driver your laptop is installing for the device isn't the correct one.  Check the device manufacturer's site for the most up to date driver they have available for Windows 8.1.
    Hope this helps!

  • Window 8.1 system unable to access network shares via VPN connection

Is there something inherent to Windows 8.1 that prevents it from accessing shares on a domain?
I know that it cannot join a domain, but does that also mean that it cannot access shares which are on a domain?
My problem is that I have several user that are running windows 8.1 that are connecting to our network via a VPN.
The users have domain accounts but their computers as windows 8.1 cannot joined to the domain.
So to access network shares they have to use their domain credentials to create a VPN connection.
Once connected the user can RDP to systems on the domain using their domain accounts, so I know that their user names/passwords and permissions are correct. They can access these systems using the computer name, so I don't feel that I have a DNS issue.
They can see the shares on our file server, but when they try to access their departments shared file, they receive an access denied message. There are a few shares that are completely wide open, shared to all users and all departments but they cannot access
    those shares either.
You can ping the file server, from the the client when they are connected to the VPN but you just cannot access any of the shares.
    So...
I am thinking that it has something to do with windows 8.1 and not being able to join a domain, but I cannot find anything to explicitly support this thought.
Other users running a variety different OS (windows 7, OSX, Linux) can all access the shares without any problems via the VPN, so I am a little stumped.

I have done some more testing and oddly enough I can map a drive if I use the IPaddress, but not the computer name, when checking the check box "connect using different credentials"and providing they users domain credentials.
This seems to point to a DNS issue, one would think, but I can hit the file share server by name \\fileserver.dev.lan
I can see all the shares, so dns seems to be fine right?
So I don't understand why I can map a drive using do the IPaddress and not the machine name, but yet I can see and ping the server by name?
When I try to create a mapped drive by machine name I receive the following message:
    Windows cannot access \\fileserver.dev.lan\all
You do not have permissions to access \\fileserver.dev.lan. contact your network administrator  to request access.
But if I use the \\x.x.x.x\all using the very same user and password I get connected with no problem.
This only seems to happen on windows 8.1, which leads me to think that has something to do with OS.
I am thinking about upgrading to windows 8.1 pro, but I don't want to go though the hassle and expanse is the OS is not the problem.

  • Did 7.4.2 solve windows losing connection to TC share

I was hoping this new firmware would solve the my issue but at least for me it still persists.
After restarting my TC I can connect my XP box to my TC share.
Though after a few minutes - approx 10 or so - I receive a message that the drive is no longer available, and I can no longer connect unless I restart the TC. My Mac work fine.
This a the newer dual band TC from early 2009 so I can't roll back to anything before 7.4.1.

    toonz,
this is the file from the network diagnostic I did while still running 7.4.2.4 - I also sent it with an email to the tech support for itunes store; so far all I've heard back is that they are working on it and will send me an email when it's fixed. (by the way, I deleted the ip addresses etc. but everything else is the same as it was then.)
Running itunes 7.3.2.6 is working fine, by the way, I was immediately able to connect to the store and download. If anyone else is thinking about downgrading, try saving your playlists first (search for 'saving playlists' in itunes help) because you won't be able to use your old itunes library file. I don't know if saving the playlists separately will help, since I didn't know that would happen when I started. meeshala

  • Win10 connection breaks network share (SMB)

I've noticed this little issue since installing Windows 10.
I have a Windows 7 PC which has a shared drive.
I access this drive from my 2 laptops, and 2 media centers.
All is fine, UNTIL I connect to this network share from the Windows 10 laptop.
Once I do this, I can no longer connect to the network share anymore. Always get timeouts.
Thought maybe something was hogging up the allotted 20 connections, but checked fsmgmt.msc, and it shows no connections to my shares after I close out.
The only way to access the network share again, is to reboot the Windows 7 PC.
Again, this ONLY happens after I connect to said share from the Windows 10 laptop.

I'm getting this exact issue as well!  as soon as I try and connect to a share on my domain I'm not able to ping any servers from the Win10 machine and i can't ping back.

  • PC won't connect to network share

I have a Windows 7 PC that won't connect to a network share.
    I can ping the server.
The PC has a static IP and is on the domain.
I've removed the PC and re-added it from the domain.
I've tried on a couple of different user accounts, but when either try to run to the server and share (start->run \\server\share) or use "Map Network Drive" it fails.
    Any advice ?

The PC has a static IP and is on the domain.
The DNS points to your local DNS server?
or open up this registry settings:
    HKLM->System->CurrentControlSet->Control->NetworkProvider->Order-> ProviderOrder
check the value of that string whether it contains this value: RDPNP,LanmanWorkstation
or compare the value of the registry with any machine on your system that is working fine.

  • Windows 7 SP1 client file lock on network share hosted ny WIndows 2012 Server

    Hello
I have one strange problem after migration from Windows 2003 Server to Windows 2012 Server R2 Standard.
All migration tasks went well but two things do not work.
In Computer Management you have The Opened Files feature and if you open any file that is located on the network share hosted by Windows 2012 R2 form Windows 7 SP1 and then close it
it remains open in the Opened Files tab (even if you wait an hour).  There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
The session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Can someone help me with that ?
    About the environment:
It is one server Domain migrated form 2003 to 2012R2.
The domain and forest level was raised to 2012 R2.
I have made clean install of Windows 2012 R2 and then migrated AD.
    Best Regards
    Sebastian Sala

    >>There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
T>>he session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Based on the description, please check event logs in Event Viewer to see if there were some related events logged. Besides, does this phenomenon happen all Windows 7 clients? We can try to restart the client to see if it helps.

  • Moving Time Machine Drive from Direct Connect to Network Share

I have a 1 TB external USB 2 drive I use for my Time Machine backup. I'd like to move that drive to a file server and continue backing up to it. The problem appears to be that when backing up to the drive as a network volume, Time Machine wants to create a new sparsebundle for the backup and not use the existing TM backup folder on the drive.
Is it possible to migrate a Time Machine drive from direct connect to network while preserving the backed up data? Thanks!

Depending on what "file server" you're using, that may or may not work reliably. Here's the criteria they must meet: Disks that can be used with Time Machine. And be careful here: just because some 3rd-party hardware claims to support Time Machine doesn't necessarily mean that Apple supports it, or that it will work in all circumstances.

    That's correct.

  • WDTV LIVE will not connect to network share without a password

I followed "Method 1" from mike27oct post entitledHow to resolve "Network shares" access problems with WDTV media players. The WD Live recognizes the computers but continues to require a username and password.

If you followed Method 1, be sure you adjusted the settings in the WIndows settings, too, be sure Windows is still not requiring a password.  Double check all the steps you followed which I provided in the thread.I double checked your instructions and also realized that I had to except the "anonymus" login and the default password.  Now I am able to link to the computer on my network.  It also shows a list of folders but some of the listed folders are really not on my computer. My movie/video m2ts files are in my video folder. I keep getting a message that their are no media files available.

  • Finder crashes when trying to connect to network share

    Hi!
I've just upgraded my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro to Mavericks, and found that Finder always crashes when trying to connect to my office network share via an IPSec VPN connection. It's a Synology DiskStation NAS, so i have the options to connect via AFP or SMB, however both result in the same, the crashing of finder. Even after i relaunch it, i can't open finder, and can't even shut down or restart my system (only by holding the power button for 5 secs...)
At first i thought it's the result of the latest Little Snitch version, but the problem remained after completely removing Little Snitch.
Unfortunalely i won't be able to try connecting to the NAS on the local network until monday, but i'd really appreciate if someone could point me to the direction of some solution as this way i can't do any of my work.

Just a quick heads up. I finally managed to resolve the issue. It seems that mavericks doesn't handle the MTU of the vpn connection correctly, so i ended up modifying the MTU on the VPN gateway.

  • Can't get a windows operated laptop to connect my network

    Hello
I have the following set-up: iMac + MacBook pro with Time Capsule. A network has been created protected WPA2. I am trying to connect laptops operated by Windows XP SP2 for one and XP Pro for the other. The connection procedure seems to stop when the network and the laptops are registering the IP adress with the impossibility to read the IP adress.
    Anybody can help?
    Thanks in advance
    Pierre

Basically it is all ok but your last line. When going to:
Time capsule>Internet>internet connexion and connexion sharing then it was "disabled". So i have choosen the suggested option "share a public IP address". By doing that I need to update Timecapsule. When doing the update TC is saying that the following two problems need to be corrected before updating TC. The two following elements are listed, they are called First DHCP adress and second DHCP adress. Then it is saying that the DHCP range I have keyed in is in conflict with the IP address WAN of my wireless apple device. I promise I didn't do that! Then it is quoting the first address: 192.168.1.2
Then there is a possibility to update. I try it after i send the current message.
