Windows 8.1 mail app suddenly can't login

Up until just about an hour ago, the simple modern UI version of Mail worked with my icloud mail account.
Now it won't.  Tells me to check settings and login with the login/password combo.  I did that, but it rejects it though the login info I'm giving it is correct.  Checked the support page to ensure that some setting otherwise might need changed, and that's not it.
I suspect that Apple kicked in the 2-step verification and that the mail app can't handle that.
For info, outlook 2013 works fine with it after loading the icloud for windows software.  While Outlook 2013 is a better mail client, I just need a simple one and would like the 'modern' version to work.
Thanks
Lloyd

I am also experiencing this issue on my Android device.
Password works fine on icloud.com; I also have two-step verification enabled. A fix for this would be very helpful at this point.

  • Mail.app suddenly can't read POP using SSL, but Thunderbird can

    Hi all -
This afternoon, my mail configuration stopped working suddenly. I'm using Mail.app under 10.5.6, reading my mail from my own domain host, which is on a shared server managed by my hosting company. I read my mail using POP, SSL encrypted. This has worked, stably, for a very long time. Now, POP + SSL fails to connect. Disabling SSL makes it work. Setting up an IMAP account for the same domain works. Outgoing SMTP mail using SSL works. But POP + SSL doesn't. I set up an account in Thunderbird, just as a sanity check, and that account DOES work using POP + SSL. Then I set up an account on my wife's Macbook running 10.4.11, and it DOESN'T work with POP + SSL, and does work with POP without SSL.
(When I reboot and start Mail.app, I get the familiar, "Untrusted certificate" dialogue, because the hosts mismatch: my host is www.myhost.com, but the certificate is issued for the machine that the hosting company uses to host my domain and a number of others, host789.hostingcompany.com. This has never caused a problem for me, and I have no reason to believe that it's the problem here - I get the same dialogue under Thunderbird, which works fine.)
I'm assuming that something odd has happened on my domain host. The certificate was issued on 3/11, which is recently enough that I can imagine that I'm seeing the new certificate for the first time (maybe I'm grasping at straws here). In any case, it's gotta be some way that Mail.app is cranky about SSL that Thunderbird is not.
I've got a help ticket submitted to my domain host, but I doubt they're Mac experts. So my question is: can anyone think of anything that they might want to check out which may account for this sudden change in behavior? Disabling SSL permanently is not an option.
    Thanks in advance.

And just in case anyone asks, yes, I checked my mail account settings carefully with my domain hosting service and the settings appear to be correct (or, more to the point, there were some minor differences which I corrected, without any improvement in my situation).

  • Windows 8.1 Mail App doesn't sync Exchange account on desktop but does on laptop

I was referred to this forum by another Microsoft engineer, and while I do not believe this is where this problem can be resolved, I'm following his instructions.
I have Windows 8.1 on my desktop PC and an ASUS X205TA laptop. For several months, the three accounts I have under Mail (two Outlook.com accounts and one Microsoft Exchange work account) synced properly on my desktop.
In fact, the Mail app on my desktop worked fine with my Exchange account from the first time I used it under Windows 8 in 2012. The version didn’t seem to matter – whether it was Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, the Mail app
connected to my Microsoft Exchange account simply by filling in my email address and password.
Sometime this past summer, however, in the July timeframe, the Mail app stopped synchronizing with my Exchange account. In an effort to repair it, I removed and attempted to reinstall the account. This time, it would not let me load the Exchange account, even
when including additional information (domain, server, user name, et. al.).
This past fall, I purchased the ASUS notebook with Windwows 8.1 installed, and I was able to successfully load my Exchange account in Windows Mail using just my email address and password, as well as the two Outlook.com accounts, and all three accounts synchronize
properly. When I went back to my desktop, however, I noticed that the Liberty email account was listed under my Mail app. Apparently, since my laptop and desktop configurations are registered under the same Microsoft account, when they synchronized, the Liberty
email account which I successfully loaded on my notebook appeared on my desktop system as well.
The Mail app on the desktop, however, still can’t synchronize with my Exchange account so, in effect, I’m back to where I was in July. I would also add that I'm running Microsoft Outlook 2013 on my desktop and laptop and, in both cases, all three of my email
accounts are installed and working properly.
I don’t know if this information gives you insight into what the problem might be, but it’s apparent that there’s something in the configuration of my desktop Windows Mail app that is causing the problem. It’s working just fine on my notebook.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Mail app multiple times, run the App Troubleshooter, and tried a Clean Boot installation of the Exchange account. None of these fixed the problem.
As I told the other Microsoft engineer, if this were an Exchange problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to my Exchange account in Outlook 2013 on my desktop and my laptop, nor would I be able to connect to my Exchange account using Windows 8.1 Mail
    on my laptop.
The problem is specifically with the Windows 8.1 Mail app on my desktop PC, and its sudden inability to sync with my Exchange account after it worked in every iteration of Windows 8 since 2012.
I have posted this issue in this forum as suggested, but my troubleshooting does not point to an Exchange problem, but rather a Windows 8.1 Mail app problem on my desktop PC.
    Can you help?

    Hello ronontheright,
Do you mean that only the Exchange account in the desktop Mail app can’t sync?
Please take a look at the following article.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/11/26/supporting-windows-8-mail-in-your-organization.aspx
Exchange ActiveSync can be used to sync data for email, contacts, and calendar. The Windows 8 Mail app supports Exchange ActiveSync.
Please open the Windows Store app Calendar and People to check if they can normally sync.
Please try to remove the account in Mail app and sign in again and check if the issue still exists.

  • I am unable to sync my iCloud email with the built in Windows 8.1 mail app

I can not sync my iCloud email with the built in Windows 8.1 mail app. I've looked on Apple's website and followed instructions for entering the mail settings but every single time I have tried it will not connect. Any ideas?

This windows 8 app can sync with iCloud/Google calendar.

  • Exchange 2010 Activesync with the Windows 8.1 mail app limited to 10 MB attachments?

We have a few executives that want to use the mail app on their 8.1 tablets to access our Exchange 2010 SP3 Ru7 servers via Activesync.  They get connected and can sync mail, but when they
try to download attachments that are larger than 10 MB, they get an error  (Sorry I don't have the exact wording)  the error doesn't say anything about attachment size limit, but it works if the attachment is 9.5 MB and they get the error as soon
as the attachment is greater than 10 MB.<o:p></o:p>
I tested the app with the same attachments greater than 10 MB with an Outlook.com account and it works ok on the Windows 8.1 tablet.<o:p></o:p>
I also tested using an IPad against the Exchange servers and I can download attachments greater than 10 MB just fine.<o:p></o:p>
So it looks like only the combination of Exchange (2010 in my case) and the Windows 8.1 mail app has the limitation?
    <o:p></o:p>

ActiveSync is limited in the same manner that OWA and web services are.  See the following page to see how to increase this limit:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996835(v=exchg.141).aspx

  • Windows 8.1 Mail app limitation

I can't send more then 3 or 4 pictures (1MB each) with the Windows Mail app.
Tested with gmail account and company Exchange account.
Is this a limitation of this app? I can't find it with dr. Google ;-)

    Hi,
I tested in my own mail app, I can successfully send the pictures, I can also send more large documents like word\PDF.... As I know, mail does not enforce any limits on number and size of attachments users can send.
Do you get any errors when you send the mail with 3 or 4 pictures or other large documents? Have you checked this network bandwith?  Is it a unmetered network or metered network?
Have you tried to send in another mail application or web mail in browser? What is the result?

  • After reinstalling operating system Windows 7, I lost apps and can no longer sync with Outlook 2010?

After reinstalling operating system Windows 7, I lost apps and can no longer sync with Outlook 2010?

    apps are stored in
    C:\Users\<your account name>\Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications
their extensions are .Ipa  you can try doing a search on your harddisk
unless you formattet it when you reinstalled
but an app can only ever be bought 1 times on an appleID so if you try to buy them again it will give you a free download of the app and not charge you
about sync then if you connect the ipad and click info tab and set it to sync your outlook data it should sync without any problems

  • Suddenly can't login to Wifi on my iPad and have disconnected and restarted router and iPad to no avail.  Help!

Suddenly can't login to Wifi on iPad and tried posted solutions with no success.

Thanks, trying to figure out what the ISP might have done is difficult......kind of like trying to operate blind folded with one hand tied behind our back.
We don't like to guess at things, or worse.....get into a series of "try this" and "try that" that only lead to more frustration,  but have little choice if you want to try to continue with this. Your call on that.
    On your MacBook Air......
Open Finder (the smiley face at the lower left of the screen on the dock)
    Open Applications
    Open Utilities
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
What is the current setting that you see for Router Mode?
    Is it "Off" (Bridge Mode)?
If yes, then change that setting to read DHCP and NAT
Click Update in the lower right corner of the screen, and allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart, then power it off
    Power off the provider's modem/router
    Wait a minute
Power up the provider's modem router and let it run a full minute
Then power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run a full minute
    Check the network

  • Windows 8.1 Mail app does not sync with the Office 365 account

My company has recently switched to Office 365. Windows 8.1 Metro Mail app does not work with Office365 account. When I switch to IMAP it works but that is soon going to be disabled and is not compliant with the company policy.
I can add the account and it also pushes the security policies but it does not sync email at all. Says account is not available. The tablet shows up on the mobile devices on the office 365 and I could also remote wipe it.
It seems everything works except basing email sync. What could be the issue?

  • Certificate based authentication for Exchange ActiveSync in Windows 8.* Mail app

I have a Surface Pro and want to setup access to my company's Exchange server that accepts only Exchange ActiveSync certificate-based authentication.
I've installed server certificates to trusted pool and my certificate as personal.
Then I can connect thru Internet Explorer, but this is not comfortable to use.
I don't have a password because of security politics of our company. When I'm setting up this account on my Android phone I'm using any digit for password and it works perfectly.
Can someone help to setup Windows 8 metro-style Mail application? Does it supports this type of auth? When I'm trying to add account with type Outlook, entering server name, domain name, username, 1 as a password then I've got a message like "Can't
    connect. Check your settings."
Is there any plans to implement this feature?

For what it's worth we have CBA working with Windows 8.1 Pro.  In our case we have a MobileIron Sentry server acting as an ActiveSync reverse-proxy, so it verifies the client cert then uses Kerberos Constrained Delegation back to the Exchange CAS, however
it should work exactly the same to the Exchange server directly.  I just used the CA to issue a User Certificate, exported the cert, private key and root CA cert, copied to the WinPro8.1 device and into the Personal Store.  Configured the Mail app
to point at the ActiveSync gateway, Mail asked if I would like to allow it access the certificate (it chose it automatically) and mail synced down immediately...
So it definitely works with Windows Pro 8.1.

  • Windows 8.1 Mail App - Cannot Send Mail

The fact that this problem has been ongoing for TWO+ YEARS with no clearly defined fix makes me want to take my SP3 back to the store and go buy an iPad, even though I hate Apple products. I think I'm voicing the frustrations of the people here when
I say that I've been searching for over an hour with no possible fix in sight, and an apparently apathetic Microsoft.
    Dear Microsoft,
Your Mail App STILL has this issue: it randomly decides that it won't send any mail and so every outgoing e-mail sits in the Outbox of the app. This seems to be some kind of password-crossing issue where multiple passwords from multiple accounts get switched.
However, I've been searching for over an hour and CANNOT find a fix to this problem despite the many unanswered/unresolved forums and questions regarding this 2+ yr old problem.
By the way, thank you so much for removing the ability to go into Settings > Account within the Mail App and change the password. Now I have no idea how to fix your issue even manually. Please put the setting back so I can fix it, or just release a version
of the Mail App which WORKS.
    Thanks a bunch,
    Twixte
In the meantime, has anyone else figured out how to temporarily resolve this annoying issue? Is there a setting I can change or do I just need to completely disconnect my Microsoft account from my SP3 before I can actually send mail again?

    Hello Twixte,
Do you receive any error message when the Mail App fails to send the email?
Please refer to the following article about troubleshooting the problems with Windows Store app.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/windows-8/what-troubleshoot-problems-app
    1. Download and run the Apps troubleshooter.
    2. Make sure the app isn’t blocked by Windows Firewall
    3. Try to uninstall and reinstall the Mail app.

  • Blank Message Window when starting Mail.app

Anyone experiencing this in Snow Leopard? Occasionally when I start up Mail.app there will be nothing in the message viewer, "Inbox" is selected still but no messages show and the top bar says Inbox where it usually says Inbox (No. of messages here).
I have to select another folder and then select "Inbox" again before anything shows. I did a clean install + import of mboxes and I already did a rebuild. Just getting a bit irritating.

same situation here. After installing SL on two other Macs the third one is having problems with the Mail app. It starts and is just showing the menubar; no window not even a blank one. After installing just the Mail app again from the DVD, Mail starts and I can get the main window from the menu (Fenster -> Hauptfenster) but I can only see the Mail folders in the left pane, *no message list*, *no preview content*
Even worse, I can't quit the Mail app using the menu. I have to do a *force quit* within the Finder.
I have searched this forum and tryed all the (good) suggestions without success.
    What's next?

  • Cannot send email with Mail app-..can't connect to AOL server anymore??

Up until today my MAIL app in my iMac let me use an email address that is from the AOL.com group (netscape.net)…I cannot send emails now because I can't get the computer to connect to the server. My iPad will….but not the desktop. I tried using a different server name; smtp.nestcape.net, which is the one I used in the iPad…but the iMac won't let me change it to that one..so back to the old smtp.aol.com……Still my MAIL app is not recognizing this or letting me connect!?!. I tried creating a new password at the wedpage of that email account.. successfully..but it has made no difference. I am stumped and have wasted half the day trying to deal with this. Anyone else have such an experience? HELP…PLEASE!

Thank you Eric for sending the links. Fortunately after I wrote this post…I don't know what happened but I filled in my mail preference settings for the umteenth time with my new email password and voila! It worked. For some reason however…now when I open the Mail App I do still get a prompt asking me if I want to use this server….and it is, of course, the one and only I have listed.!?!?! The thing that irritates me…is…that I had done NOTHING to cause a problem to begin with. I think my email account at aol (nestcape) may have been hacked and my password stolen or compromised in some way??...and perhaps that caused a glitch in my mail app??? I am no techy, but I should have started out with my intuition and changed the password first before going mental….When something like this happens it makes one feel so vulnerable.…I usually feel well secured with my lone iMac and now my new iPad…ANYWAY…thank tyou  for addressing my issue and I have bookmarked those links…for future reference which I hope I never need. Hey..is that your kitty??? She is beeeooootiful!
Take care and again, thanx~ D

  • In the mail app why can't I see single page pdf attachment created by SSRS R2 on iPad with iOS 8?

We have reports that are generated using Sql Server Reporting Services 2008 R2 and are distributed to users by email as a PDF attachment.  This worked fine in iOS 7 but ever since users have updated to iOS 8 the single page PDF is missing even though it has the paper clip icon indicating there is an attachment with the email.  If the PDF is multiple pages then the PDF icon would appear but there seems to be a problem with the single page pdf that is embedded on the mail app in iOS 8.
We've recreated this issue creating a test report and sent it to iPads that have iOS 7, iOS 8 using different models of iPads (2, 3, 4) and the ones that have iOS 7 work fine.  Only the ones that have iOS 8 have this issue.  Also tried changing the format of the file to a PNG, TIFF and again the same results on the iPads with iOS 7 display it correctly.  Another test we did was send the PDF to our personal email and open it on our home iPads we were not able to see the single page PDF on iOS 8.  Looking at the headers of the email I can see the that the Content-Type is multipart/mixed.  When the original is forwarded to oneself on the iPad the attachment is included but the Content-Type is application/ms-tnef.

Can you check your email headers, I have also noticed this for reports that are generated using Sql Server Reporting Services 2008 R2. It could to be due to the Content-ID header I believe.
As a single page attachment on iPad will try and display inline, the Content_ID header is possibly affecting this and showing a small blank square as the image instead. Although this isn't defined as inline within the Content-Disposition header and will appear as an attachment on Outlook.
