Windows 8.1 Moving Desktop Icons Problem
I just installed Windows 8.1 and I'm very happy with it. There is just one problem I have and I hope you can help me resolve it.
I can't move my desktop icons. Windows is newly installed and I don't have any third-party software that could mess up everything. I searched across the web for different solution but none of these work. I tried to install all the updates but that didn't
change anything. They said I should try pressing Escape button three times. I pressed Escape three times, but that also didn't work. Then somebody said that possibly the Esc button on keyboard may be stuck. But this problem continued even after I plugged out
my keyboard!
I can't think of another solution to try so I hope you can help me.
EDIT: I'm really sorry, I saw Win 8.1 Visualization, but it says
Virtualization :S I don't know what to do.
boot in safe mode
If you are able to arrange the desktop icons in safe mode, I would suggest you to perform clean boot.
Refer to the link to perform clean boot.

Hope this resolves the issue.

Moving desktop icons with Yoga screen rotation and Windows 8
I have a Yoga 11s. I have a bunch of desktop icon shortcuts and folders on my desktop as I rarely use the Windows 8 "tiles." Unfortunately, when using the Yoga as a tablet, whenever the screen rotates, all my desktop shortcuts and folders move around. Is there any way to get them to stay in place in Windows 8? I realize that when one rotates the tablet around that the icons have to move around to accommodate the screen rotation, but when I rotate the screen back to the horizontal position, they don't return to the position they were in.
Thanks!I did get a potential solution over on a Windows 8 forum. Unfortunately the solution doesn't stop the migration of the icons. It only restores them to their original position with a few mouse clicks. I have yet to find a solution that keeps the icons from moving in the first place.
I downloaded a program called Iconoid. When you first run the program, a little windows pops up. You click on the positions tab, then put the dot in the selection that says "use relative positions for all resolutions." You then hit the "save icon positions (relative)" button and now the program remembers where all of your icons are.
When you rotate the screen and all your icons get messed up, you open Iconoid (in systray for me), go to that same "positions" tab, then hit the "restore icon positions now." That moves all the icons back to where they were. You just have to make sure that if you change your icons on your desktop a lot, that you hit that "save icon positions (relative) button once in a while so the program gets updated icon positions. -
Since upgrading to Lion on my Mac Pro, when I start up, all the desktop icons appear on top of each other in a stack, I then have to select all and go to view clean up. they then appear normally. I have 2 monitors connected therefore I am in extended desktop mode. Also with the change desktop box in desktop and screen saver panel de-selected, my desktop picture keeps changing.
MikeYou are probably playing WoW with a smaller screen resolution than your normal setting. This moves the files and folders on the desktop to the centre to make them fit on the "smaller" desktop. When going back to the normal resolution they simply stay where they were before (=more towards the centre). That's not a serious problem.

How do I stop Lion from moving desktop icons when I startup?
When I starup my iMac with Lion 10.7.1, the desktop icons that I have on my desktop organized in a particular order, all move to the far right of the desktop and do not stay in the same order. How can I stop this from happening? When I shut down, I uncheck the box open all windows when restarting, and I have unchecked the open application windows in the general section of system preferences.
Thanks for the help!Several issues involved - please click through the threads to the right under More Like This.

I have an alias of an application (Warblade) located on my desktop. Recently it has been jumping to the right side of the screen (same area a new file would end up). I have it located in the same area as several other alias icons. Ive had this comp 4 years running OS X 10.4.* from original installation.
I have noticed icons randomly moving in the past (but not often enough for concern). though this one icon has been moving a lot lately, enough to be very annoying. I sometimes spot it disappear from left side of screen and reappear on the right side. There is no apparent pattern or logic as to why it is doing this. Latest incident happened while I was typing a rtf in textedit. Most of the time I just notice it missing where it should be and find it in the right portion of the screen somewhere.
This has been happening nearly every day at least once for a couple weeks now.
Anyone seen or heard of this happening?Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.
Here is Apple's take on the subject:
http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/immaculate_desktop.html -
The other day I was working on my iMac when the screen all of a sudden froze. iTunes was playing and continued to play, but I could not do anything. This has happened before, so I didn't panick, but just did a hard reset. I was then prompted to recover my computer from my external harddrive/time machine. This took about 10 hours (over firewire). Since then the computer works again, but the Finder window when open as well as the icons on my desktop are constantly flashing or blinking (more like periodically disappearing and reappearing) when I'm in the Finder, I'm then brought back to the previous folder I was in when it reappears.
I read that this might have to do with Stuffit, which I deleted. I also deleted the Project 179 from Canon, as it was the last program I installed on the day that the computer went glitchy. I also tried both of these:
1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
3. when the terminal opens, type "cd desktop" and hit enter.
4. type "rm -rf .DS_Store" and enter
5. type "exit" and enter
If it doesn't work try the follow:
1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
3. when the terminal opens, type "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/" (This will empty your trash) and enter
4. type your administrator password. As you type, you will not see any character on the screen. Just type it and hit enter. (If you left your password blank, you have to make one by going to system preferences - users & groups - change password)
5. type "exit" and enter

Hi,
I'm sure I'm being stupid and ignorant, but please help me: an icon for iPhoto Library has appeared on my Desktop - I probably picked it up by mistake on the cursor when I was in iPhoto. Question is this: to get rid of it, can I just drag it to the Trash bin? Or will that delete the Library itself? I'm frightened of losing all my photos?
Thanks for your help.Right or Control click on the desktop iPhoto icon. If there is an entry in the drop down menu that says "Show package contents," then this IS probably your iPhoto library. DO NOT DELETE IT! (yet) If it says something like Show Original then this is an alias icon and you can delete it. Otherwise:
Open up a finder window and on the left side panel click on Pictures.
Check to see if there is an iPhoto library file there. If there isn't then drag the icon from the desktop back to the Pictures folder. You are probably okay now.
If there is an iPhoto Library already in the Pictures folder then temporarily rename the icon on the desktop to something like iPhoto Library 2. Open iPhoto. Check your photos. Are they all there. If they are then the library on the desktop is probably a copy of you iPhoto Library. Do with it what you want.
If after opening iPhoto you are missing pictures, close iPhoto. Restart iPhoto while holding down the option key. This will open a dialog that will allow you to open a different iPhoto Library (the one on your desktop) by clicking on the Other Library button. Select it and see what photos are in it.
After you have examined both libraries you can decide what you want to do with them.
You can have more that one and select which one to use when you "option start" iPhoto.
Hope that helped.

It is notable that ms Icons have no problems and others do.
If I delete these icons and replace them, they are fine until the next reboot and they look like this. Blank.ico is in C:/Windows

"MODERN PROGRAMMING is deficient in elementary ways BECAUSE of problems INTRODUCED by MODERN PROGRAMMING." MeThis was after re-adding the vista shortcut manager, setting it show the arrows and the turning them back off and I deleted blank.ico from c:/windows.
Also it was most important to touch each icon with the cursor.

I am a new mac user, and have searched all over the topics, and have been unable to find the answer. I recently downloaded an application (Perian0.5) and it appears as an icon on the desktop. If I try to move this into the Applications folder, the icon appears there with the little arrow. What I want to do is get rid of the icon from the desktop, but everytime I go to trash it, it shows as though I am ejecting it. It is my guess that if I do this, it will remove the app from my system, and have to download it again. How do I move this icon/app off my desktop, and place it completely in my app folder? Neatness counts, thanks.
Double-click the icon on your desktop and find the actual application in the window which appears; once this has been done, drag it to the Applications folder and remove the item from your desktop. Sunce the application will then exist on the hard disk, you don't need that icon.
Your description suggests that the icon on your desktop is a mounted device image; most of the time, the contents of the image can be installed by placing the application in the Applications folder. If you see an item with the icon of a cardboard box, double-click it and follow the onscreen instructions.

Desktop Icon Problem! Please Help
OK I've just done the stupidest thing ever since I first touched a computer. In an effort to clean up my desktop, I put all my icons in a new folder named "icons." I then put all the icons in the trash and emptied the trash. So I went into the icons folder today to access something and it said "the alias could not be opened." I have a number of important things that were on there. Is there anything I can do to retrieve these files? Please help.
It sounds like the original icon files were in the item that was trashed.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer. -
FIX for moving desktop icons!!:)
Download OnyX , click the maintenance icon then the ' Rebuild' tab then tick 'Display of folder's content then click 'Execute'. Booom Done.
Yep, Onyx is the best free utility I've found yet and solves a host of issues.
I usually tell people to run ALL of it's maintenance and cleaning aspects, they get a clean machine, the caches get rebuilt, their maintenance gets done, their permissions etc as well as their smart status and so forth all get checked.
If they have a more serious issue with the drive, then OnyX will tell them and they tell me which I can then advise them to get their data off immediately as their drive is failing etc.
It also teaches them to fish, thus they learn how to do some basic repairs themselves, if they do all that and then come back and say their problems wasn't fixed, then I know to look elsewhere. -
"Show Desktop" icon in Gnome Disappears
Hello All,
I have GNOME (installed from the repos). Once every few logins (it seems pretty random) the "show desktop" icon (usually in the lefthand corner) is missing.
If I try and add it again, the new icon actually appears directly to the right of the original. If I logout or reboot, the original icon re-appears.
I have found nothing online relating to this problem, nothing in the forums (one post mentioned it, so I commented, but never got a reply).
I've actually had this issue in another distro since before I started using arch --- Fedora to be precise. However, I've yet to see it in ubuntu, debian or slackware (and I use ubuntu at work every day, on multiple machines).
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Question
I have installed firefox 3.2.64. When i click on the desktop icon nothing happens. The windows task manager says mozilla firefox is running but I can't see it anywhere. What might the problem be?A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

How do I stop desktop icons from moving around - Windows 7 Professional 64 bit?
This just started occuring 7/8/12. Recently added UPromise turbo saver to my Internet Explorer. Also did a Java update. Can't really remember if they were done before or after problem began. Now, all my desktop icons flip around and will not lock into where I place them. How can I stop this.
Hi there makeyesup!:Well you have 2 choices; go to Control Panel then look for System Recovery then follow what you see on your monitor if you see a calendar, that is System Restore select the latest date that you can remember your icons acting normally then restart anew & wait until the program straightens it out it should be as good as new
2. right click your rodent & look for anything that says Arrainge icons... hit auto or whatever gets them normal
3. restart PC then before the desktop shows up press the F8 key the look for & select "Last good configuration that worked" then restart
good luck
hope this helps

Problem with desktop icon moving
Whenever I restart my computer, the "Macintosh HD" icon moves to become the bottom icon out of my list of icons, leaving the top right space empty where it usually should be. This has been happening for about a week after having my computer for three months.
Any idea why this is happening?
thanks.Welcome To Discussions aburi!
Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
Icon size: 32 x 32
Text size: 12 pt
Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
Snap to grid
Show item info
Show icon preview
Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.
