Windows 8.1: no bootable device--please restart system

I know that there have been several posts like this before, but none that exactly fit my situation.
So I have a satellite c875-S7303 that was running windows 8.1.  Today when I went to turn it on I got the message:
Checking media [fail]
then: No bootable device --please restart system
I am able to access the setup utility, and I have tried changing the boot mode from UEFI to CSM with no luck.  I also dont feel like it is a physical problem with my HDD or the cables because the make and model of the HDD shows up in the main and boot tabs of the sutup utility.
Of course I didnt make a recovery disk, and there isnt a recovery option (that I'm aware of) anywhere in the setup utility.
I feel like the problem is that the boot files are corrupted somehow but the HDD is otherwise ok.  Is it possible to boot windows 8.1 with a generic boot file that I can burn to a CD or put on a USB stick?
Any help would be extremely appreciated

I'm planning to get hard drive usb adapter cables to see if I can get any of my data off of it.
I don't have any ideas better than that.
You may need to take ownership of files and folders, BTW, when you access from another Windows installation.

I Remove Windows 8 Comming With My Laptop Toshiba C55-a5105 For Install Windows 7. When i start the computer this message is showing : No bootable device -- Please restart system
    Help me please

    INSTRUCTIONS:
First - Burn recovery media before you make any changes! -you may want or need to go back to windows 8 later-
    Second -
Important Bios changes when changing from Windows 8 to Windows 7:
Completely shut down laptop (Shut down Windows 8 while pressing the Shift key to completely power off.) then restart computer and hold f2 when the screen goes black and wait for the bios setup utility to launch.
Select advanced, then system configuration, then boot mode
UEFI and CSM or legacy  (UEFI for Windows 8 and CSM or legacy for windows 7)
For windows 7 change to CSM or Legacy mode.
Third -  Also in bios setup utility select - Security, then Secure Boot, then you have to disable secure boot for windows 7.
You will need to delete all partitions before installing windows 7 this is done forth step.
Forth - Insert your windows 7 disc and select custom install, your partitions should show up - click on each one and below you will see advanced drive options, click that and you will have options to format - format each one, then delete each one. You will be left with one raw partition, select to install and windows will do the rest while installing the operating system.
    Fifth - install drivers
    Installation order is important:
Install chipset driver then video driver before other drivers. Then install Toshiba Value added package before other applications
    Post your results!

  • Satellite Pro C50-A-1MM - "no bootable device Please restart system"

Laptop had some 'important Microsoft upgrades' yesterday which I tried to install. Laptop died and when I started it up again, said 'checking pc diagnostics'.
It has advised I am getting an 'automatic fix' for last 12 hours. now stating ' no bootable device- pleasecrestart system. I am not very computer literate so looking for some advice on what has happened and how and what I need to do now?
    Thanks

The message no bootable device - please restarts system means that no system (Windows) has been found on the HDD and therefore the notebook does not boot up.
There are different reasons for that. First of all this may occur in case of HDD malfunction. For example if the HDD is fault and does not appear in BIOS. Therefore as recommended by Dr.Lamp, check if the HDD is viable in the BIOS (first BIOS page).
If the HDD appears in BIOS, well, then there might be a problem with the system partition.
It could be possible that the system partition has been muddled up and therefore the system cannot be found.
In this case the easiest solution would be a new OS installation.
Do you have a recovery disk?
If yes, take it an reinstall the system but note: this would format the HDD and of course, all the personal data will be lost.

  • No bootable device -- Please restart system (Encore WT10-A)

After a few hours of use i got the following message on the screen: No bootable device -- Please restart system
I create a UEFI bootable pen drive with a windows installation image, and i get the windows installation process on my screen, but the touchscreen doesn't work and because of this, i am stuck on the first step install.
Is there somehow to fix it? any recovery process that i can do? Please Help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is no problem, but you will need at least a USB hub with your stick, a keyboard and, even better, a mouse.
The minimal windows does have a USB driver and then the installation runs smoothly.
As soon as windows does its thing, you need to visit the toshiba support site and grab the package called intel platform. You might as well download that now and have it ready on a USB stick.

  • Satellite L850D-12P - No bootable device - please restart system

    Hope someone can help
I have the above laptop and i turned it on to get this error
    +"No bootable device--please restart system"+
    But was ok yesterday
It wont let me into the Bios at all. As soon as i turn it on i get that message instantly
I tryed a new hard drive into the laptop but still get this same error

    Hi
    > I tried a new hard drive into the laptop but still get this same error
The notebook was preinstalled with Win 8 system.
The notebooks BIOS supports UEFI mode and secure boot.
This means that if secure boot and UEFI is enabled, the notebook would not be able to boot from external device or would not boot other systems like Windows 7 or Linux.
To install other system, you have to change the boot mode from UEFI to CSM mode and have to disable the secure boot option.
To access the BIOS, you have to press F2 button immediately after the notebook has been powered up.

  • "No Bootable Device -- Please Restart system" Satellite Click 2 L35W-B3204

Hi, So I recently reset the hard drive for my Toshiba Satellite Click 2 L35W-B3204, and after it deleted all of the files, I am unable to restart the system. I keep receiving the "No bootable Device- Please restart system" pop-up, and I have absolutely no idea on how to fix this problem. I have visited a few forums, and I'm not sure which solution would be best for me. Also, I do not have any of the items that the computer came with.  Please help.

cwmccrayI cannot get the bios to recognize drive. I have Ultimate Boot CD and I can get the linux system to boot. But no hard drive. I have slaved the HD in window 7 and it assigns a drive letter. I am certain it is a partition issue..--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can boot into linux so processor , board, and memory appear to be functioning. make sure the bios is set to the defaults, check the hard drive connection as Peter suggested as well as the connection from the board to the hard drive connector. Sometimes a hard drive can be seen on another computer and still be bad, we often suggest that people slave the drive as you worded it to recover data from a failing or failed hard drive.I would try another hard drive, even put one in from another laptop just to verify if it is a hard drive or board connection problem.

  • Re: Satellite L850 - start-up with 'No bootable device - Please restart system

I've been trying to fix this L850 - 1LK laptop which keeps crashing and so on. But whilst going through advance options in the troubleshooting section (Windows 8). I tried the, I think its called Toshiba recovery tool and click the option to wipe data assuming it would remove all the corrupt data so I could reinstall from factory settings.
However now when I boot it just says 'No bootable device - Please restart system' and when i restart it does the same. I've tried opening up recovery partition but there are so many different buttons that supposedly bring it up I'm unsure if I've press the right one. Any help?

    > I tried the, I think its called Toshiba recovery tool and click the option to wipe data assuming it would remove all the corrupt data so I could reinstall from factory settings.
Do you mean the option called: Toshiba Maintenance Utility ??
This is described in chapter C
The usage of the "Toshiba Maintenance Utility" will delete the HDD(s) of your Computer and this is not a Recovery tool! Executing this software will result in complete data loss!
You should use the option called: *Reset your PC* (chapter B)
This option is useful when you want to get a completely fresh start on a PC, with no previous files or configuration retained. This option permanently removes your personal files and apps from the PC and returns Windows 8 to its original state. That original state is the OEM factory default configuration.

  • [Solved] No bootable device -- Please restart system ... and no idea

I've installed a bunch of arch systems, but none since arch went away from the ncurses installer. Essentially I can't figure out how to get the  system actually booting. I've followed the install guide step by step, twice. When attempting a boot all I get is what is in the title
No bootable device -- Please restart system
I've tried re-running mkinitcpio -p linux to no avail.
I'm not even sure where to start, what to report here. Let me know what outputs you need to see and I will comply.
    Thanks in advance.

    Solved. Learned about EFI...

  • Error message: No bootable device Please restart system

I am the owner of a Satellite c55t-a123. I let a friend borrow my laptop and when i recieved it back the next day it had no OS and wasn't booting anything, ive been told to update my BIOS. I have the update ready to go on a disk but i do not know how to update. I hsve even tried putting windows 8 back onto it via rufus bootable flash drive because i do not have a disk large enough.

If nothing is plugged into the ports and there is not an unbootable disc in the optical reader, that message normally means the hard drive is unavailable.

  • No bootable device please restart system

Hi guys , I think the subject says everything.I have tried everything that I read on this forum (control alt delete , f1 0 f12 f8 , shut down the laptop for 5 min , take the battery out..) but anything worked...so please help guys!

Hello, I would suggest you do this: Find your recovery disc, press the power button and immediately the logo appears press f2 for bios setting. Under security, disable secure boot and under advanced, change the eufi booting to csm. Save and exit. And please make sure you don't do anything you are not sure of coz if you interfere with the bios, you mess up alot. You can even change the boot options if need be, but for this case, the hdd is seems to have crushed so the system will definetely explore the cd- rom booting, usb or lan. With this configuration you will ne able to reset, refresh and/or troubleshoot your pc with the recovery disc or even unplug the windows 8, 8.1 thing and replace with w7 or better yet linux system. Remember, if the recovery disc is not supplied during the purchase of the pc, you can create you own. Insert a cd rom and at start menu type recdisc (w7) or recdisc.exe(w8), go on it's straight forwad. Just incase you don't have the recovery disc with you, replace the os and make sure you create one for the future. Goodluck.

  • Message 'No bootable device- Please restart' - Satellite C series

    Hi,
Only had my laptop for just over a month and the white on screen arrow would freeze completely just after starting up. Was therefore unable to use any programme or do anything on the computer.
Backed up all of my data then got an IT friend of mine to look at it.
Completely wiped the computer to start afresh and am now only able to get a black screen which says :-
    'Checking media'
    then after two seconds
'No bootable device - Please restart system'.
Restarted roughly ten times now and the same error message comes up.
When I press any key, the message is repeated.
    Thanks

    Hi
Please check firstly what device has been chosen to boot the notebook.
Usually the notebook should boot from HDD.
So go to BIOS (F2) and check if HDD has been set as first bootable device.
Furthermore you should check if HDD is recognized at the first BIOS page (size, name).
In case the HDD isnt listed there, the HDD is faulty and cannot be found by BIOS.
This would require HDD replacement and new OS installation.

  • Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5120 ( No bootable device -- Plese restart system)

    Hello
I have recently tried to restore my laptop before selling to a family member & I wanted to restore the laptop back to out of box factory settings & I believe I did exactly what I shouldn't have done & wipped my whole hard dive in the process!
I tried to restore my system by holding the 0 down while powering off
    I did so
Now I stuck with this everytime I power on the laptop.
    Media (Failed)
    Media (Failed)
No bootable device -- Please restart system
I've tried to hold 0 down while starting up but it does nothing
But I can get to the settings by holding f2 while starting up
By all means I am not good at computers...
My main concern is there any way I can bring back anything on my hard drive by using a back up disk or anything?
Or am I stuck with purchasing a new windows?
Could anyone help me out step by step if there is anyway I could recover my hard drive?
    Please!
    & Thankyou

Where did you find that? See the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive, which begins on p. 54 of the User's Guide (link above).
Hard to tell what you've done. Try this. First shut down the computer completely this way. With the battery and AC adapter removed, close the power button for 30 seconds.
Re-attach those. Restart the computer by pressing the power button and immediately start tapping the F12 key until a Boot Menu appears.
If you get that, use the arrow keys to select <HDD Recovery> and press Enter. On the next screen you are asked to confirm if you want to continue with recovery. Select Yes. The computer should bring you to the Advanced startup screen.
    Can get there?

  • No bootable device- please restart

I don't know how to restart.

Post your model and operating system!
    Things to try:
Reset the bio's to the defaults - F2 at start up to reach the bio's, then f9 to set defaults, then f10 to save and exit, then try to start.
You can remove and re install the hard drive to test if the connection was loose or dirty, try to start.
If it still does not work you may have a bad hard drive.
