Windows 8.1 on 13" rMBP Mid 2014 unusable. Slow, choppy audio/video

I've installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my new 13" rMBP Mid 2014 and it runs terribly slow. The mouse movement is choppy and I can't even listen to music, which is horrible. The computer often as if it's running at 100% capacity - even though it's almost idle. If I click a link or press a button the audio track skips and does so randomly, too. On OSX it runs at least 10 times as well/flawless. I saw that some people said Retina laptops are slower with Windows because of the screen, but I'm not even using the Retina screen. I am on a external monitor with a disabled screen.
Check out this DPC Latency Report:
Troubleshooting attempts:
- I've checked if there's an update for the audio drivers available and just reinstalled the current one.
- I've reinstalled the newest Boot Camp Support Software.
- My OSX version (the one before Yosemite) is fully updated.
- I've disabled many devices in the device manager (network, audio, sound, etc) to see if it's a faulty driver, but couldn't find it.
Do you also have similar problems with Windows 8.1 on the newest MBP? What can I do to fix this?
Thanks

On an older 13" 2012 MBP with Intel HD4K. (and an SSD - if there are no paging/swapping issues otherwise), it shows

  • Bootcamp Installation rMBP Mid 2014 Chaos

I am trying to install Bootcamp on my friends mid-2014 13" rMBP without success.
So far we have spent 2 nights and 6 hours working on this.  I am convinced there are problems with Apple's Bootcamp Utility and/or firmware.
After successfully creating the USB installer drive, and partitioning the mac, we cannot boot from the USB drive.
I am an advanced user and have tried everything, including different ISO's, PRAM resets, booting from the CD with Superdrive, the whole deal.
What's disappointing is that I'm helping my mate out who is new to the Mac, he still occasionally needs Windows and this was a major feature that led him to switch.  It doesn't make Apple look good.  Obviously, from reading the forums, this is a common and well known issue with the last two generations of rMBP.
We are currently deployed overseas and don't have access to an Apple Store or genius.
I know these are user-forums, but I assume Apple does monitor these from time to time, they would be stupid not to.
    Any ideas?

  • RMBP Mid 2014 Windows 7 installer can't create partitions

    Hi all,
I have a late 2014 Retina Macbook Pro with 1TB SSD and Intel Iris Graphics (no nVidia). It has been updated to Yosemite 10.10.2.
So for I had good luck installing Windows 8.1 Professional on it via the bootcamp assistant from a USB key. Unfortunately, due to work requirements, I need Windows 7 (compatible VPN clients and proprietary software at a customer). Windows 7 Professional SP1 however won't cooperate. For the record, I off course removed Windows 8.1 first again via BCA.
First problem was that the 16GB Lexar Jumpdrive I used to install Win 8.1 didn't want to boot when it was created by BCA for Windows 7. Even when holding the Option key at boot, it didn't even show in the boot options. Very weird. This was quickly solved by using an 8GB Kingston Datatraveller stick instead which boots fine.
The BCA does all its stuff correctly then but when booting into Windows 7 and starting the install, the Windows installer first complains it must format the bootcamp partition as NTFS. If I then do that, the installer complains it can't create additional partitions.
OK so let's format it to NTFS. Gone is the BOOTCAMP label.
But Windows refuses to install anyway.
I do not have any additional USB drives inserted, nor is there a Superdrive present. Apple support page said to remove any Thunderbolt devices but there are none.
I have looked for similar threads but the reports there are about the fusion drives in the new 5K iMac and Windows 8.1.
So far I have also tried to format the bootcamp partition as ExFat as suggested in other threads but this makes the Windows 7 installer complain it needs additional drivers for CD/DVD and refuses to install.
This is what I see when I hold the Option key during startup when BCA has created the partition and the USB install drive is inserted:
So I'm kind of out of options. Any help or hint would be appreciated!

So this is quite embarrassing. I had already deleted the Windows 7 partition via BCA so to answer your question Loner T, I started BCA again. Unticked create USB installer and download support software and only let it create the Windows 7 partition again. The only difference with last time: I choose 149GB instead of 102GB (thanks to the bloody difficult slider in the BCA).
After bootup of the USB key the install went fine and now I'm looking at a running Windows 7 on my rMBP
Problem is: I have no idea how I solved it. What I did before I posted my question:
    - Partition size was 102GB vs 149GB now
    - The previous BOOTCAMP partition was erased and reformatted by DiskUtility in ExFat
    - It was then removed by BCA
Could this have reset the out of sync MBR vs GPT?
Anyway, it works. Here's the output of the commands:
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
    gpt show: /dev/disk0: mediasize=1000555581440; sectorsize=512; blocks=1954210120

So I don't really know what I did to solve this... Maybe one of the utils synced the MBR and GPT again?

  • Should i go for Windows 7 or 8 for rMBP mid 2012 model with BootCamp 5.0.1?

Hello! I recently got my 15'' rMBP 2.6Ghz with 8gb ram and 512gb SSD. (Manufactured on September 2012)
Updated mac os x mountain lion to 10.8.2. Am in 'urgent' need of Windows OS to use ANSYS, and few of the high end CAD softwares like Solidworks, etc.
I haven't purchased any Windows OS as of now. When i checked the Boot Camp version 5.0.1, i just found this, ''Create a Windows 7 or a later version''
Does that mean, i can install Windows 8 on my rMBP?
    Please help!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I have seen some cases where Boot Camp Assistant 5.0.1 shows that you can install Windows 7 or a later version. However, Apple hasn't released Windows 8 drivers for the Mac so I recommend you to install Windows 7 and you will save headaches if Windows 8 doesn't work correctly. Also, Windows 7 is much better for professional applications.
Note that you will need an external optical drive in order to install Windows 7 on your MacBook Pro with Retina display

  • Display getting wholes in rMBP Mid 2014

My macbook pro retina 13" 2014 model has had something happen to the display, Basically I was at school, going between classes and noticed in my last class 6 dead looking pixels. Upon closer inspection I noticed that they are actually punctured wholes in the display. Behind them is a little dot. When I got home I instantly reported this to apple support and I asked if this is covered by warranty, He said Yes it is covered then gave me a number to call, But they we're closed on the day of report. So the next day I took the computer back to school to find that there were now 20+ of these all over the screen. I called the number to look at it getting fixed I asked if it would be covered again, just to make sure. The guy said "Depending on what the problem is" Well, I have done nothing to cause this. Its like the pixel has exploded and broken the display in some way, but it has kept happening. These wholes are very small, but they draw my eyes to them so im getting it sent in so it won't happen again. The problem is will this be covered? Because I paid $1,650 NZD for this and it shouldn't be happening under 3 months after purchase. Ive been told they remove the whole lid making it cost over $800, so I would not be able to pay for this and its likely to keep happening.

There's a 95% chance that this has nothing to do with you using it, but Apple can't testify it's their fault if they haven't seen the device yet. Bring it to an Apple Store or send it to them so that they can look it up. If the screen is indeed misbehaving, then they'll change it free of charge, and in the 5% chance that it's your fault, they'll be able to explain what you did to make this happen, so you'll fully understand the problem, and they will give you the choice to (pay for the) repair or not

  • Brand new 13" rMBP (mid-2014) doesn't wake from sleep after a few hours

    Hi,
I have brand new, mostly untouched, 13" rMBP running Mavericks (10.9.4) that crashes during sleep. If I close the lid and leave it for more than a few hours, I have to do a force shut down by holding the power button for a few seconds and turn it back on again.
I've already followed the advice of this article: OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake and have called Apple Support, who did nothing but read the article to me.
    I have:
    - reset the System Management Controller
    - restored all defaults in Energy Saver preferences
    - booted into Safe Mode to verify disk (unsure of whether or not this was effective at all)
In my Console, I am getting a line that says "com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure"
According to this other thread - MB can't wake up from sleep anymore - it seems like it might be a hardware failure. Can anyone confirm this and/or advise on possible next steps?
    Thanks.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • 13" rMBP (Mid 2014) Freezing/Crashing with Yosemite

I've been having these issues non-stop since this morning - I thought I had the problem fixed but things have become a lot worse!
Here are the steps that (caused?) the issue - and what I've done about it so far:
Woke up this morning and used MBP for about 15 minutes, closed lid and took to work.
On arrival at work - screen completely dark on wake - could hear volume keys beeping - tried multiple restarts - no joy.
After ~1 hour of restarting/trying safe mode and external monitor, the computer suddenly starts working (with external monitor only - no primary display detected in settings) - I decide not to push my luck and use it as a headless computer for the rest of the workday.
I restart the computer at the end of the day and notice the primary display is now showing windows - but the screen backlight is completely dark and non-responsive.
I reset the NVRAM - computer now boots fine into Yosemite. Screen is back on and bright.
Computer now crashes ~every 5 minutes. Completely freezes, even in safe mode. Have tried resetting NVRAM (and fixing permission in safe mode). Sometimes the computers mouse and keyboard even freeze on the black boot screen, or even as I'm typing my login password. I have not been able to use the laptop for longer than 5 minutes straight.
Has anyone else had these issues? They seem to be delightfully random at the moment - am unsure why the screen problem started, or disappeared as suddenly only to be replaced by a much nastier problem...

On an older 13" 2012 MBP with Intel HD4K. (and an SSD - if there are no paging/swapping issues otherwise), it shows

  • Choppy Audio & Video with Capture Window

Newbie to CS3.....I have a mini-dv tape that was recorded in hdv. I opened a new project using 1080i (60). I opened the capture window and hit play to see how the tape plays (I am playing it through a HDV Sony camera). The video plays perefect when I watch in on the LCD screen of the camera. When I watch it on the Capture screen, the video plays, stops, plays again - audio is all choppy. I cannot figure out why the tape is not playing fin in capture mode. I am using a PC. Is there an update I do not have or patch that perhaps fixes this issue?
    Thanks, Steve

Could my issues be related to my processor - I am using a Pentium 4 2.53 Ghz with 1 MB of RAM.
Could be. I know that Jim Simon edits SD material happily on a machine not too different from that.
With HD, depending on the CODEC used, there are usually three elements that play a role in the playback and editing:
    1.) CPU
    2.) RAM
    3.) HDD configuration (I/O sub-system)
Each can play a role in the playback/editing process. What are your full system specs? Might well be a clue, or clues, in that.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Mid 2014 13" rMBP - Image Persistence

    Good Morning,
Last night I came across an image persistence issue that seems to plague most rMBP users that have been supplied with an LG Panel.
I'd like to confirm that this issue is still present in Apple's most recent iteration of the Macbook Pro (Mid 2014). I purchased this 13" rMBP just under a month ago, I was hoping to improve my productivity with this purchase only to find it has hindered it further. I work with illustrator and photoshop, sometimes both at the same time. I've noticed switching between applications that there seems to be a faint silhouette of the illustrator window. When I first noticed this issue I told myself "There's no way that's burn-in, this is clearly not a plasma display and it's 2014" After a prompt restart, the faint silhouette was still there and all I could feel was frustration and complete regret after making such an expensive purchase. The feeling I had at the Apple store was similar to when I purchased my Canon 5D, you save up all this money and expect a premium product. Only this time around, I'm not quite as joyful about my purchase. The faint silhouette overlays my photos, and can be a problematic during post production. Although the silhouette may only be visible for minutes at a time before it completely disappears, this has caused me to walk away from my Mac. Which is something I have been trying to avoid, and it was working until last night.
My question is, has LG made any changes to their most recent production of Retina displays?
Do 13" rMBPs come with Samsung displays?
What are my options outside of the 14-day return window?
I'd like to avoid repair, one time I brought in my iPad and the genius was practically sliding and dropping my iPad on the genius bar. I know that Apple tries to set the bar when it comes to personal computing, and in some cases customer service. So, is it wrong of me to expect quality from a premium manufacturer?
    Thank you.

No, I did not misread, it died in 4 hours and 20 mins.
That sounds better. You confused me with:
    ...only 4:49 minutes remaining.
My science-major mind saw that as 4 minutes 49 seconds.
Still, you should get more runtime. Here is another Apple article that helps with battery life and heating issues:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity - Apple Support
The article was written before OS 10.9 and 10.10, so you need to make a change in Step 3 for 10.10. To make the required change from "My Processes" to All Processes," you now need to use Activity Monitor's "View" menu:
Another thing that is not clear in the article is that you will not get good results if you run the test immediately after a restart. Use the computer normally for about a day so that any runaway processes are activated, quit any apps you launched, then run the test.

  • No Trackpad / Keyboard on Windows 7 Installation on mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Although there is a similar thread regarding this  --  this applies to a newly released mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro and the solution posted in the original thread does not work for this newer model.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro.  (Running Mavericks 10.9.5)  I Have both an original Windows 7 Install DVD and a downloaded ISO file as well.
PLEASE NOTE:  That because I have need for multiple partitions on the SSD drive, I am not able to use Boot Camp Assistant to do the actual install.  I have accomplished this a number of times in the past without any issues during or after the install.  I have an MS-DOS(FAT) partition ready to go.
When I restart from the Windows 7 install DVD I get to the "Choose Language" screen and I have no trackpad or keyboard.  A wired USB Mouse does not work either
I am not able to create an install USB drive for this model because Boot Camp Assistant gets to the "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" task it gives an error message "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server"  (NOTE: Using Boot Camp Assistant to ONLY "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" as I get the same error message when attempting to do that.
It is my understanding based on the Apple article   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634  that I need to download the driver software directly from Apple with the link they provide.  I DID successfully download the Windows support software from Apple following the instructions in that article.  However, I am not aware of any way to include that downloaded software when using Boot Camp Assistant to create a USB install drive.
I tried the trick with the USB drive as explained in apple article  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4599  but even with a freshly formatted MS-DOS(FAT) USB drive in the USB port on the left of the MacBook Pro and the Apple USB Optical Drive plugged into the USB port on the right side of the MacBook Pro, I still have no Trackpad or keyboard when I get to the first screen of the Windows installation.
I spent the last two days searching posts here and in general and only end up more baffled than before . . .
I am as positive as possible that the USB drives I am using are USB 2 and NOT USB 3.  Although I guess that does not matter if I can't use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows installer that includes the Windows drivers for the MacBook Pro Hardware . . .
Some of the posts suggest that the Windows drivers from Apple need to be included on a USB install drive created with Boot Camp Assistant.  That appears to be impossible at the moment if the Software Update Server does not contain them.  I am confused as to why the are available directly from Apple  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721 but they are not available when using Boot Camp Assistant????
Am I missing something???  Is this just a matter of waiting for Apple to add the necessary drivers to the Software Update server???  (It has only been two months since this MacBook Pro was released)
Has anyone successfully installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 MacBook Pro running Mavericks???
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated . . .
    John

    1. I have tried copying the Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse drivers to the $WinPEDriver$ directory with mixed success on a 2012 MBP.
    2. My experience is based on a 2013 rMBP. You may be able to use an Apple USB Keypad/Mouse to better success.
    3. See http://www.macworld.com/article/2460820/macbook-pro-mid-2014-review-minor-update -offers-slightly-better-cpu-performance.html for HW differences between the two machines.
    4. If you have access to a 2013 rMBP, I can suggest trying to build the USB on that and working with the USB to see if you can make it install Windows. the rMBP 2014 and rMBP 2013 have the same HW, except some CPU changes. You can also try building the USB at the nearest Apple store, if possible.
    5. There is a section in AutoUnattend.xml, which is supposed to install all drivers in $WinPEDriver$ (see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686316 )

  • Black boot screen and startup manager on mid 2014 rMBP after upgrading to Yosemite

After upgrading to Yosemite I'm experiencing black booting process. Moreover, I noticed that the startup manager, which we access by holding the option key, has the black background too. I didn't like the Yosemite, so I downgraded back to Mavericks, but I still have the startup manager with the black background and the initial screen during the startup sound is black too, and after that the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up, which is typical for Mavericks. I want my startup manager to have the grey background as before. And also, before there was the grey screen during the startup sound, not the black one. How to revert all this to the previous state? I'm experiencing all this on my rMBP, 13-inch, mid-2014.
I want to revert because after downgrading back to Mavericks my rMBP started freezing terribly, especially on youtube, ebay and app store. And it's not just the web browsing, it's freezing when navigating in finder too. I know there are many experienced users here, so I hope that somebody can help me with this. Before upgrading to Yosemite my machine was running flawlessly.

  • Is it applicable to run windows 8 on macbook pro, 13" retina display, mid 2014?

I wanna bootcamb windows 8 on a macbook pro 13" retina display mid 2014.
is it possible, specially that my drive is 128 GB only? does windows properly working?

    Hi ..
It is, but be aware, Windows 8 requires approximately 16GB's of storage space and you would have to partitition the hard drive.
Strongly recommend reading the entire Boot Camp user guide before proceeding >  Mac Basics: Using Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp
You will need to purchase a Windows install disc.
Alternatively, check out VMware as well as Parallels

  • USB 3.0 HDD disconnects on Windows 7 Macbook Pro Mid 2014

Macbook Pro with Retina display 13" Mid 2014
I have installed windows 7 using the Bootcamp assistant which downloaded the support files and installed from an 8GB USB 2.0 flash disk.
All went well and I have a working installation of Windows 7 ultimate, BUT I am having issues with using a USB 3.0 external HDD which contains my backups.
It plugs in and is detected OK, but when I try and transfer field, or just leave the disk a while it will drop the disc, then resect it again.
I turned off the power management on the USB ports and this made no difference.
I installed the latest extensible USB 3.0 drivers from Intel but these made no difference.
I tried reinstalling window from scratch by deleting from Bootcamp but no difference.
The drive works fine in OSX and on other computers but just not on the Macbook Pro in Windows 7.
Any suggestions as I need to recover my photos from a Windows backup and cannot do this in OSX which is why I need Windows 7 working with USB 3.0
    Thanks in advance.

maybe it's because your ext hd is in mac os filesystem which windows cant read?

  • Bootcamp Windows 8.1 Overheating on Macbook Pro Mid 2014

Hello, I recently bought a mid 2014 retina Macbook Pro a few months ago. I got the 2.5Ghz intel i7 16GB RAM. After buying it, I installed Windows 8.1 Pro via bootcamp. So at the moment I'm running Yosemite and Windows 8.1 (Bootcamp). The fan and overheating is not an issue when I'm using Yosemite, and the temperature hovers at around 40 celsius (50-55 celsius when playing games). However, when I switch to Windows, my average temperature is 55-60 celsius. When i play games, it gets up to 80 celsius and the fan runs at full speed. I have a program to monitor my fan speed on windows, but i hate how its so loud and i feel like I'm wrecking my  laptop when its at 70 celsius because its really hot to even touch! Is there a way to run windows 8.1 bootcamp and still have it run at 40-55 celsius without the fan running at full power all the time? Please help!! Thank You!

It`s not beacuse of the case. I have the same problem with a macbook pro retina 15 late 2013 (I7 - 2.3 Ghz, 16 GB, 512 SSD, GT750M) with windows 8.1 on bootcamp. The temperature is higher than yosemite. It gets easily at 80 celsius in a demanding game, while on yosemite it barely reaches 55-60 under heavy load. It`s beacuse of windows, and these are the temperatures, I got the same average 55-60 in windows and 45 celsius in yosemite. I read on the forums and I tried evend with a cooler pad. But it doesn`t seem to be any improvement with lowering the temperature in windows.
