Windows 8.1 on Hybrid?

I've been trying to find out if Windows 8.1 will run 32 or 64 bit, on a Studio Hybrid 140G. I have looked for updated BIOS, firmware and drivers with the Service Tag. Only Windows 7 is listed. Not encouraging.
Does anyone have any information on this? I will be trying in a couple days.
Thanks

Win 8.1 will run on almost anything made in the last 10 years. You should  have a core 2 Duo processor, which is fine; my two laptops are Core 2 Duo. I would go for the 32-bit version for your machine. You will need to purchase a Win 8.1 installation disk for about $100. Get the retail version, not the system-builder version. Make sure it is a sealed package and not used. If used, you will not be able to register it with Microsoft.
Win 8.1 will install appropriate drivers during the installation. They may not be the best or the latest, but they will work. It will tell you if additional drivers are necessary. You won't need a new BIOS and most drivers will be OK, at least initially. If any drivers are needed, you can usually get them from the hardware manufacturer. Again, neither of my laptops had Win 8 drivers available, and I had no problems.
If you could find a retail version of Win 7 for a good price, you could install this and then upgrade for free to Win 10 this summer. I haven't found a cheap one however.

  • Windows 8/8.1 Hybrid Boot (Fast Startup) Problem

Hello, about one week ago I was using my laptop directly on power (without my battery), to preserve my battery a bit. I had an unexpected power cut and my machine went off. When I turned it on again, it seemed as if I was stuck in a boot loop. I
would come up saying it's installing an update, reaches 100% then reverts and restarts. It did this about two times. Now it had installed an update before, the very first time I turned it on that day before the power cut happened.
I managed to access the advanced options, tried startup repair. It had told me it failed. I tried booting again and I got through this time around. When I logged in, I ran sfc/scannow, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and I also ran
Check Disk to ensure that no damages had been done to my laptop.
Everything seems fine but I noticed one thing was different. I had dual booted my laptop with Windows 7 using a VHD from before. When I am on the Windows 8.1 Pro side, if I just shutdown then power on again. It would take me straight to my Windows
8.1 side. When I logged in, I would notice that in the CPU up time section, in the Performace Tab in task manager, my CPU Time wouldn't be starting from 0:00:00:00, it would have been a continuation from how long the system was on before.
I read up on Hybrid Boot so I know it stores the session to disk so that is to be expected.
But ever since that incident, whenever I boot up. It takes me to the os selection screen prompting me to select an OS. When I log in on Windows 8.1 and I check the CPU time, it has start from 0:00:00:00, so it would say it's been on for
just over a minute or so.
Now this has lead me to believe that something is wrong. My machine still boots up very fast. I also checked my power options, and fast startup is enabled. I checked the registry and HyberBootEnabled is set to 1, which means hybrid boot is
on. I also turned off hibernation so that it would delete my hibernation file and re-enabled it, so that it would rebuild my hibernation file.
Nothing appears to be wrong with my system, everything else functions the way it used to but it's that one issue which I've noticed that has me slightly concerned that some setting may have been disabled or some file has been corrupted, as why to
it doesn't boot the way it used to.
My guess, is that it is not resuming the session stored. That's just my guess.
I have then since removed my dual boot configuration and reloaded my BCD which I had exported before I dual booted. So now I'm back to original boot configuration. I no longer get sent to os selection screen, as there is only one os now. But
the issue with CPU up time always starting from 0:00:00:00 is still present.
If anyone knows what's the real issue at hand or anything at all that may help, I'm kindly asking for your help.
    My Machine Specs:
    Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (6.3, Build 9600) (9600.winblue_gdr.131030-1505)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
    System Manufacturer: LENOVO
    System Model: 20193
    BIOS: 6BCN43WW(V2.03)
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
    Memory: 16384MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 16332MB RAM
Page File: 4535MB used, 17421MB available

CPU Time wouldn't be starting from 0:00:00:00, it would have been a continuation from how long the system was on before. I read up on Hybrid Boot so I know it stores the session to
disk so that is to be expected.
CPU time, it has start from 0:00:00:00, so it would say it's been on for just over a minute or so.
fast startup is enabled.  I also turned off hibernation so that it would delete my hibernation file and re-enabled it, so that it would rebuild my hibernation file.
But the issue with CPU up time always starting from 0:00:00:00 is still present.
Seems you done almost all to solve this yourself. So I'm only doing a checklist to see if you completed these things.
Type in the search disk, choose,
free up disk space, unselect all, except temporary
    files
Type in search Po bu, click, what the power buttons do,  select,
change settings that are currently unavailable, uncheck turn on fast boot, Check, Hibernate to show in powermenu, then goto power menu, setup your hibernate settings. Shutdown computer, poweroff, upplug cord
and battery, wait for a minute then bootup.
Go into your bios and make sure your booting from UEFI, if your using UEFI, (if not then the functions and benefits of fastboot will not
work) and fastboot is enabled in the bios. If all is correct boot to your system.
Type in po bu again and enable turn on fast boot. Turn off the system again and power it off. Startup, lets see if all is working now

  • Open windows iso9660 part of hybrid windows mac (iso 9660 & HFS) CD

Does anyone know how to cleanly and correctly mount the windows (iso 9660) part of a hybrid mac & windows CD? Any CD made for dual operating systems automatically mounts the mac HFS by default and loads it onto the desktop & into finder. I'm interested in a way to automatically mount and eject the iso9660 part for any disk. I can't find any system settings or dialogs to do this & have had mixed luck from the command line.

The Window's part of the CD will open in a window and a disk icon for it will appear on the Desktop if I do either of the following:
    - I then use Finder's Go-> Go to Folder and enter /Volumes/cdrom
    or
    - I type "open /Volumes/cdrom" into the terminal
    Problems with this
    - if I drag the either disk icon to trash/eject, the disk icon for the HFS part disappears and the iso 9660 disk icon "cdrom" remains. Clicking on this icon still brings up the Windows part of the disk and this disk icon can't be ejected. The physical CD can't be ejected.
    - if I do a "umount /Volumes/cdrom" first /Volumes/cdrom will be empty and I can eject the CD with the F12 key, eject key, or by dragging the HFS disk icon to the Trash/Eject. The iso 9660 disk icon doesn't do anything and remains on the desktop (along with a shortcut in Finder's Go->Computer).

  • 10.9.2 - New Documents open to a search window . . .

After upgrading to 10.9.2, every time I open Pages, TextEdit, etc . . . I get a this annoying window that is a hybrid Finder / Search window. I have to either search for an existing document, press "done" in the bottom right, or "New Document" in the bottom left. This is super redundent as choosing New Document often taks you to the app's template chooser or done will guess what kind of document format I want, forcing me to go back to the template chooser anyway. It is an annoying distribution to my work flow. How do you disable this new unwelcomed feature?

I think I have this solved. I turned off File Sharing on both computers, rebooted, and turned file sharing back on.  Now Hubby's Mac can open My Mac's files.

  • Offline Files sync gives Access Denied on Windows 8.1 Enterprise

A small number of our staff have now been issued with Windows 8.1 Enterprise hybrid tablet computers, however there is a problem with using Offline Files on them - when synchronising, it responds "Access Denied".
The tablets have Windows 8.1 Enterprise with all the latest updates on them. Staff users have a home folder on the network under \\server\staff\homes\departmentname\username which gets mapped to U: and their My Documents is redirected there. The server is currently
    Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.
    We have tried:
Resetting the Offline Files cache using the FormatDatabase registry key
Using Group Policy Objects to force Offline Files synchronisation at logon and logoff
Clearing the local cached copy of the user's profile from the machine and getting them to log back on to recreate it
Setting up Offline Files event logging to the event viewer - this provides no useful information as it only logs disconnect/reconnect and logoff/logon events
Forcing Group Policy update using gpupdate /force
Forcing synchronisation using PowerShell and https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb309189%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
As suggested by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275461 we gave the All Staff security group Read permissions on F:\Staff (which is the one that is shared as \\server\staff) and then blocked inheritance for folders below that
    We also checked the following:
The CSC cache has not been relocated
No error 7023 or event 7023 errors relating to Offline Files are present in the event logs
The Offline Files service is running
The OS is already Windows 8.1 Enterprise, so installing the Pro Pack is not applicable
In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UserState\UserStateTechnologies\ConfigurationControls  all the values are set to 0 and not 1
We do not use System Center Configuration Manager
No errors were found in the Folder Redirection event logs
None of these solved the problem, does anyone have any suggestions?
Here is the error we are seeing:

    Hi,
Generally speaking, this problem is most probably occurs at File Server Client.
Firstly, please check the sharing file Sync Settings.
    Shared file properties\Sharing\Advanced Sharing\Caching
Also check shared file user list, make sure these problematic user account have full permission.
On the other hand, could you able to access to the shared file directly in Windows Explorer?
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]
Yes, the user can access the shared folder in Windows Explorer. The user has the following permissions:
    Traverse Folder/Execute File
    List Folder/Read Data
    Read Attributes
    Read Extended Attributes
    Create Files/Write Data
    Create Folders/Append Data
    Write Attributes
    Write Extended Attributes
    Delete
    Read Permissions
Here is a screenshot of how the Caching settings are set up on the top-level Staff share.

  • Does anyone know how to play Mobile Youtube videos in Windows 7?

    http://m.youtube.com/
I am currently trying to make it work in Firefox 3.6 without success.

Windows 8 ≠ Windows Phone 8. Windows 8 is a hybrid Tablet/PC OS. Windows RT is a Tablet OS. Windows Phone 8 is a pure mobile phone OS. Only Windows 8 and Windows RT both have the same app compatibility. Windows Phone 8 apps does not work with either Windows 8 or Windows RT. Windows 8 Store (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/apps#Cat=t1) is different from Windows Phone 8 store (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store.) It's not like Android where tablet OS and mobile OS are basically the same. Hey there
    I'm not able to install windows 7 (64B) on my iMac 24" (early 2008) OS x 10.9.5
    How can I enable this?
Thanks for a helpful hint :-))

... and the other where I'm trying to use for installing Windows 7
Windows can only be installed on an internal drive via Bootcamp, not an external drive, which is a Windows licensing restriction.
If you want to install on the internal drive, since you have a 4TB drive, and Windows uses a MBR (Hybrid MBR), the partition must reside in the first two TB of the internal drive. This would require manual partitioning via Disk Utility.

  • Director 11 - Publishing Mac Projector from Windows

When publishing a Mac projector file from Windows XP, the
files created do not function correctly when I test them on a
Macintosh computer (OS 10.5). Even though I publish as a projector,
the application is not self running and will display a message that
Shockwave is required to run the program. The program will run
properly on Macintosh computers that have Shockwave installed.
It seems that the files that are created in the Frameworks
folder (within the .app/Contents folder) have data in their
resource forks and this gets stripped off on the Windows system. I
thought Director 11 had resolved this issue so that you could
publish a cross-platform projector that would be ready-to-run.
If I move the .app folder to a Mac and replace the Frameworks
folder with a Frameworks folder that has been created with Director
11 on a Macintosh system, the program runs correctly without a
    Shockwave install.
Has anyone else run into this, and if so, is there a fix for
it? I need to be able to publish both Windows projectors and Mac
    projectors from my Windows system.

    Hi Phil,
thanks. You're right, it's impossible to set icon or background image, but it seems to work stable.
Do you know, if the D11.5MAC-generated projector works under MAC OS 9 / WIN95/98/NT/2000/Vista/7?
I feel sorry for you because of the UDF file system. Therefore I have no idea.
But apple has changed the way how files are connected with their applications. You can now (since 10.5) define that all files with a certain file extension has to be opened with a concrete program. But I also know that it doesn't work correctly in all cases. So may be it has something to do with that instead the way how the ROM is read with 10.5+ opposed to 10.4

From what I understand, the "Mac & PC" option in Toast will make a disc that is pretty much compatible with most OSs.
It allows you to specify separate files for the Mac and the PC side of things. What it doesn't do is let you set icon layout or a background image for the window, like the Custom Hybrid option does.
I've personally used "Mac & PC" discs on Mac OS X 10.4-10.6, Windows 98 SE, XP, and Vista with no issues.
This is great if it can solve you problems. I just wish there was a solution for making the Mac projectors work as ROM content on DVDs (UDF volumes), which is what I'm working with 75% of the time as of late. It's primarily 10.5 and newer where the issue pops up, as Apple seems to have done something with how the ROM portion is read with 10.5+ as opposed to 10.4.

I purchase this system used without an operating system. I installed windows 7 and downloaded the drivers from Hp. All drivers are installed properly and the Avermedia (A327) mini card driver can be seen in device manager.
Yet, the A327 tv tuner will not give me access to the s-video input. I can get tv thru the rf connection but I want to use the s-video because it has a cleaner signal.
Any information about the s-video port will be appreciated..
    Thank you..

    Hi Cnmarsh,
I understand you are having an issue with the Touchsmart Iq506t with  Windows 7, unable to access s-video input from Windows Media Center.
I read from your post that drivers are installed properly and the Aver media mini card drivers are seen in device manager.
I was wondering if the any of the drivers in Device Manager have a Yellow caution?
Also, is the Touchsmart Iq506t software all up to date?

  • Setup Windows and ConfigMgr step doesnt run, shows 'in progress' indefinately

    Hi
We have a new SCCM 2012R2 CU3 infrastructure in place and just trying to get OSD working with our existing images, on Dell OptiPlex 980/990 models. I have created a basic task sequence from the wizard and imported our images (windows 7 x64, created
with imagex). The task sequence applies the image and drivers, but then doesn't finish the task sequence. Instead, it reboots,  runs the mini setup, reboots twice more and returns to the CTRL ALT DEL prompt. The smsts log shows no errors, and the console
just sits there with the client stuck in 'in progress'. There are no ccmsetup logs in C:\Windows, so the setup didn't start. The files are downloaded successfully however. This is on an image that has never had the ConfigMgr client installed, but I have also
tried capturing the image with a manual client install and deploying that. When that image starts, the task sequence also doesn't finish and the SMS Agent Host service is disabled.
Below is a list of things I have tried:
removing all unattend.xml files from the win7 image
removing all 3rd party drivers from the win7 image
adding all drivers to the boot image
removing all drivers from the boot image
adding all drivers to the 990 driver package
removing all drivers from the 990 driver package
adding just disk and network drivers to the 990 package
adding chipset drivers to the 990 package
deselecting migrate system time in the task sequence
using the RTM client with the PATCH command switch for the CU3 update
    Forcing install onto C drive
deleting boot partition from task sequence and creating single boot partition at 100% space
entering the Win7 Pro KMS key into the task sequence
Using the SMSMP= switch in the client installation properties with the %_SMSTSMDataPath% variable
Using the SMSMP= switch in the client installation properties with the C:\_SMSTS folder
removing the scripts directory from c:\windows\setup from the win7 image
replacing apply driver package step in task sequence with auto apply, limited to 980 category, which only contains nic driver
tried manually installing agent, capturing via task sequence and redeploying
Nothing seems to work. Ive even tried deploying Windows 7 SP1 from the media ISO, this also has the same problem. I have used F8 and open a CMD prompt to verify the machine has an IP and can see its storage in WinPE, so I don't think it is a driver issue.
Ive also tried multiple combinations of all drivers versus no drivers in both the boot image and driver package.
I cant upload the log file as we restrict file sharing sites here, but I can paste in certain sections if it helps (the file is over 1MB)
    Thanks

Im resurrecting this again, the issue seemed to be rectified on the VM capture, but has now resurfaced on a Hybrid image which is based on this image. We have 2 hybrids, the base image which is a vanilla install, customizations such as company background,
.Net 4.5.1, Silverlight, VC++ runtimes, AV, IE10... Then the big hybrid which is based on this, which contains all LOB apps.
So, the flow is like this, with each step being the basis for the next image/task sequence:
Win7 x64 SP1 media install in Task Sequence - WORKS
VM capture, with all outstanding Windows patches - WORKS
Base Hybrid Image, .Net 4.5.1, Silverlight, VC++ runtimes, AV, IE10 - WORKS
Fat Hybrid 1, LOB apps with Office 2003 - DOESNT WORK
Fat Hybrid 2, LOB apps with Office 2013 - DOESNT WORK
Ive gone through and verified all images have the latest binaries for CU3 2012 (version *.1401). Ive also tried to take off all AV (actually, I didn't even install it, is more accurate) before image capture, just in case this is stopping the TS from
completing. This issue is happening on both virtual and physical, which leads me to suspect drivers are not the cause.
So far, Ive come up with the possible causes:
Driver (less likely, images seem to work/not work regardless of hardware)
    Software
AV (did not make a difference)
Number of activations (less likely, new fat image built from vmcapture2, rather than base image - still doesn't work)
Customizations/background (less likely, base image has customizations/background and works)
Im disabling the application install steps one by one in the capture TS to see if I can identify an application that is causing this. I have also looked through the list of hotfixes to see if this is a known issue or has a fix:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/9539.sccm-2012-list-of-public-microsoft-support-knowledge-base-articles.aspx
I also have the dism and smsts logs from a broken 'fat' hybrid TS and a working base hybrid ts and will
    compare them.
    Really tricky issue.

  • Opening CC project file on second machine fails

    Hello!
I believe I´ve read most or all of the matching topics here but I am still stuck, so here´s my situation.
On my primary Workstation I´ve created a project of medium complexity (150GB, approx. 200 files, 5 sequences).
Here everything is working just fine.
On my laptop I also installed Adobe CC. I copied the whole projects' folder from workstation 1 onto my external HDD and connected it to my laptop.
Opening and cutting works fine here too.
Now, when I save and take the project (project file only) back to workstation 1, here Premiere Pro CC fails to load it up.
The loading bar proceeds to about 75% and then freezes. If I give it some time (10-15 minutes) it finally finishes loading, but Premiere isn't showing any reaction to mouse or keyboard, there are no panels at all visible. Basically it is crashed, allthough that´s not being indicated by the task manager.
I´ve tried all the tips from in here as well as the "usual stuff":
Saving a new project file, nothing.
Deleting preview files, then saving a new file, nothing.
Importing the project into AE and exporting a new project (on my laptop), nope.
Deleting all dynamic linked comps from the old project, saving then taking it to laptop 1, opening and saving it again, taking it back to the workstation, no.
Completely deleting everything Adobe on my workstation 1 and re-installing CC, "great" experience, but to no avail.
I also followed the solution of the similar problem on another thread here in the forums, with unzipping the xml and deleting certain lines of code and so forth, still nothing.
Then I went ahead and installed CC on my second laptop (not at all to be considered a workstation). Here the projects saved on laptop 1 opened just fine (asking for media files of course...).
    EDIT:
I forgot to mention that a new and blank project from the laptops opens just fine on the workstation...
So I have to consider that something's wrong with my primary workstation. Right?
    Any ideas, anyone?
It´s a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 with 24GB of Ram, GeForce GTX 570, i7 950, WD drives only, Windows on a seperate hybrid disk...
All CC installations are up to date.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my deadline is on monday...
    Thanks!

Try assigning the same drive letter to the laptop's external drive that you have assigned to the media drive on your workstation.  That way, any project saved on the laptop will have the same absolute media file references that the workstation has.
NB: If Task Manager still thinks that Pr is responding by showing you that it's using memory and CPU cycles, then Pr probably hasn't crashed.  It's just busy and taking its sweet time about whatever it's doing.  (Emphasis on "probably")
You mentioned deleting preview files, but you didn't say anything about cleaning your media cache.  Try that.  A good cleaning of your user and Windows temporary files might help.  You should also run chkdsk on your workstation's drives to help you diagnose whether or not hard drive failure is imminent.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • 80-90 second start-up time on Macbook 2010.

I posted this question last week, but didnt get any real help.
    I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13 inch.
UPGRADED: 8 GB Ram and a 500 GB Hybrid Hard Drive.
Start up time for my Mac is 80-90 seconds, which is a bit longer then I expected after the upgrades. I already read of D's list of suggestions and performed all system checks that i felt were appropriate. My hard drive is less then half full and have no log in items.
Is there anyway to see of there is a program that's causing the slow start up? Please Advise.

If you did a fresh install of OS X and there is no annoying startup programs or network requirements (iCloud), minus the time you log in it should boot from bong to desktop in about 30 seconds on a standard 5,400 RPM hard drive, slightly faster for a 7,200 RPM and about 20 seconds for a SSD.
Given the bloat of 10.8+, add 5-10 more seconds to each of those times. So your boot times are certainly not normal.
Since it's a hybrid, it depends upon what data is in the SSD portion and how large the SSD portion is.
Perhaps the software or hardware mechanism for determining what frequently used data the hybrid is placing in the SSD portion is not working or can't work properly with OS X as it's designed to work with Windows.
Perhaps the hybrid drive is defective.
Far as I know, Apple doesn't support hybrid drives, outside of their "Fusion Drive" perhaps there is a conflict of some sort occuring.
There is a mile long thread here about Seagate Hybrid drive "disaster", perhaps you should take a look there.

when I have installed it at first time I was getting around 60 fps while playing world of tanks on maximum settings, than it started to drop to around 40 fps, so in order to get that fps back I went to high settings form maximum but fps stuck at the same lvl, so went to medium settings but the fps still doesn't change, ive dropped the resolution from hd even to 1360X768 but the fps is still at 40 fps mark
Does the FPS drop happen recently or it's there for a while?

  • Monitor black after coming out of sleep mode

Every time my computer goes into sleep mode, after 5 minutes i think is what it set at, the screen is black.  I can see the desktop on each side of the black part of the screen, but only about a 1/16th of an inch.  I have to turn off, then back on the screen to get the picture.  It doesnt seem to make any difference what i have for settings for the sleep time.  Only if i turn off sleep mode of course.  Ive downloaded all the updates but no success.  This is a problem ive had for years just thought id take another crack at it.  The monitor is a 2159m.  Its about 6 or 7 years old now, but still this is very annoying.  Any thing you can do to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the response. This issue could potentially have numerous causes, so I will suggest multiple troubleshooting avenues.
First, your Windows 7 might perform "hybrid sleep" instead of the regular sleep mode. This would illustrate the exact situation you have explained. For instructions on verifying, enabling, and disabling hybrid sleep mode, please reference this website: http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/turn-off-hybrid-sleep-in-windows-7/
If this does not resolve the issue, the next troubleshooting step will be restoring the power defaults to normal settings. To perform this task, go to the start menu, type “CMD” in the search bar. Now, you should see a shortcut for CMD above. Right click on it, and click “run as administrator”. If it asks you for administrative permission, please allow permission.
You should see Command Prompt open. Type the following command in this window and hit Enter afterward (without the quotations): "powercfg -restoredefaultschemes"
Restart the computer afterward and observe what happens. If the issue persists, this is next command I require you to enter in Command Prompt as administrator (without the quotations): "sfc /scannow".
This will take a series of minutes to complete. Running this might find a corrupted file or service and repair it. After it completes it will basically say either no corrupted files were found, corrupted files were found and repaired, or corrupted files were found but were unable to be repaired. Restart after this completes and observe the results.
If the issue still persists, the next step will be performing a hard reset on the desktop. To do this, turn off the computer, and unplug all cables attached to the tower and monitor (including all power sources) for a few minutes. Plug all the cables back in and turn on the computer, and see if the issue persists.
if the issue is not eliminated, I would attempt all pertinent troubleshooting steps in these HP documents below (since they address causes for black screens in various situations):
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c01881110 (this document is specific to notebooks, so please follow all relevant troubleshooting)
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=bph04760
If the issue is not resolved, you are likely experiencing a hardware failure. At that point you should contact HP technical support for additional information. You can utilize this website to locate the most suitable number, based on your region: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

  • How can i remove a hybrid mbr from my system drive so that Efi booted windows will install.

    Hi,
i have just clean installed OSX lion on a freshly wiped drive in my macbook pro, using a bootable lion installer usb i used disk utility to partition my drive into a mac and a windows partition under the GPT/GUID partition scheme, i then proceeded to install lion onto the mac partition, and completed the set up, All Good...
so i plug in my Windows 8 EFI Boot USB stick (Notice, EFI boot here, NOT BIOS EMULATION BOOT), shutdown and power on the mac and proceed to the boot picker by holding option, So far so good, the usb key is recognised and the system boots into the Windows Setup in EFI mode, Enter product key, accept terms and so on, Now i select my Windows partition and windows Says That it cant install to Partition 4 (EFI Partiton, OSX Lion, Lion recovery, Windows), It says that it can only install to a GPT / GUID based disk as expected...
Why is there a protective MBR on my drive when i didnt add one, and i have not even touched bootcamp assistant...
How can i remove this Protective MBR from my drive so that my disk is PURE GPT so windows can install?
hours of googling has turned up nothing...
    System:
Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2009
    Mac os: OSX Lion
Version of windows trying to install: Windows 8 Release Preview 64 bit in EFI Mode

Alexander, I would like to apologize for the TERRIBLE answers you have been given so far.  I too had this question, and so here is what my thoughts are, as maybe they might provide insight in leading you towards the answer.
I am a *nix user in general, and thus own a mac and a thinkpad.  In fact I just got my thinkpad not too long ago.  As such, I transfered my faster hard drive to my faster computer, which made logcal sense to me.  Ergo, I moved my Mac drive to my lenovo.  On this drive I have a hybrid mbr which is no longer needed.  So my thoughts are this:
From what I gather, the UEFI standard indicates that there is to be a protective MBR on all GPT systems.  This is so that when you use programs that are not GPT aware, they will see a presumably "full" drive and not think that they have the right to destroy your existing data in what it thinks is free space.  For instance, fdisk or other MBR only partitioning systems.  Thus, if your system has only a MBR with a single EE partition, it would be my guess that it was in fact not put there by installing Windows, but rather for the protection of your system.
If you are in my situation, where you do indeed have a hybrid MBR with written out partitions, it would be my guess that the only way to rid yourself of it is to do it manually.  The way I would recommend, is using gdisk (gpt fdisk).  It is command line only, but the syntax is pretty easy:
    $ sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
Assuming you are using your mac partition and your primary hdd is disk0.  That will put you into an interactive session of gdisk.  Enter "?" for command options.  What you need is the "recovery and transformation" section which is the "r" I think.  From there I would say you probably want to create a new hybrid mbr (you will be using this to delete it).  When it asks you for the partitions you would like to include, just hit enter.  It should then ask you if you would like to create a protective entry for the remainder of the empty space.  This is what you want so tell it to do that.  After you are done, "w" will write and exit.  You may want to first use the "p" to print and ensure that you have what you want.  You can proabably check your work by using fdisk as so:
    $ sudo fdisk -l /dev/disk0
I hope this helps you, and if you find that there is a better way, I hope you might enlighten this thread.
    Cheers!
PS The command examples, the $ is to indicate it is a bash/shell command as a non-root user, do not include it in the command.
