Windows 8.1 Photoshop CS5.1 D800 NEF Files won't open?

I have recently installed windows 8.1 and as a result I had to reinstall Photoshop CS5.1. After doing so I find that Photoshop will not open my Nikon D800 NEF files. I have downloaded and installed the raw file updates from both Windows and Nikon but the files still are not recognized by CS5.1. The files did open with no problems when I was running Windows 7.
Any suggestions?

What you need to update is the Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop (ACR). Reinstalling Photoshop reverts ACR to the shipping version.
You need the very latest ACR version that will run under Photoshop CS5, which is ACR 6.7. This was also the first ACR version to support the D800.

D600 raw files only open in CS6/ACR7.3.  You need to upgrade your Photoshop.   http://www.adobe.com/photoshop/
An alternative is to use the free DNG Converter to convert your NEFs to DNGs and those will open in older ACR versions.  Another alternative is to get Lightroom 4.3.

  • Photoshop CS5: how many files can be opened at once?

I've just tried to open about 400 jpg's in Photoshop CS5, as I needed to crop them to the best ratio for display on my iPod Touch, and I got an error message saying I'd tried to open too many images at once, and it stopped at about 200.
My system is a Win7 Pro 64Bit, 3.4GHz i7 machine, with 16GB RAM, and I thought actions like this were driven by the amount of system resource available, but Photoshop seems to have an internal limit, regardless of the resources.
Has anyone else come across this apparent limit, and is there a way 'round it?
    Thanks

In that case if a center crop will do you can download my crafting actions package. It contains a plug-in script that I wrote based on Adobe plug-in script Fit Image its name is AspectRatioSelection you can record using it in an action set its dialog to have it set a new selection that is a rectangle with a aspect ratio 3 2 that is centered and not feathered.  This script will select a 3;2 center selection for lanscape images and a 2:3 selection for Portrait images.  When the action is played the diaqlog will not show for the plug-in will record the settings you used when you recorded the action into the actions step.  These setting will be passed to the script when the action is played and the script will not display its dialog unless you turn on the dialog in the action step.  Once this setp is recorded follow it with a Image Crop step.  Once you have recorded this two setp action you can run the Image processor set its dialog to run this action and heve it save and resize the crop to fit 1920x1920 or you could include a Fit Image step in the action after the Image crop step and set the Fit Image dialog  width and height to 1920. You will find Fit image and AspectRatioSelection under menu File>Automate>...... You will also find Imahe Processor Pro there if you download it from Russell Browns web site.
If a center crop will not do for you add an additional step to the action to make it interactive by adding an interactive transform selection after the aspectratioselection step.  The step need to be recorded with a 180 degree rotation and  have its dialog turned on and you will need to hold the shift or shift+alt keys down and use a cornor point as you transform the 3:2 selection to constrain the selection to have the same 3:2 aspect ratio.

  • Photoshop no longer recognizes NEF files / won't open jpg files because of "missing marker segment"

I am running Photoshop CS6 on a 2013 iMac with OSX version 10.9.2.
    1) As of today, Photoshop no longer recognizes NEF files. This has never happened before, and the files are coming from the same camera I've used for the past five years.
    2) I receive the following message when I attempt to open a .jpg file "Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)."
This is also the first time this has happened, and happens with EVERY .jpg file I attempt to open.
    3) Both of these errors ONLY happen when I am opening files located on the work server. I hit COMMAND K to connect to serveral work servers -- my work space, shared collaboration folder, and an image archive that was recently moved. If I grab the file that I want and transfer it to my desktop, and open it with Photoshop from there, it works fine.
    I have run all updates.
I'm not sure if this is a Mac issue (with regard to accessing the work servers) or a Photoshop issue.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Photoshop does "play nice" over networks, but seems to catch more OS and server bugs than other applications (mostly because we've added more error detection code over the years after dealing with many OS and server problems).

How did you install the plugin?  You may want to try reinstalling it or installing the dng converter, as that is what has the camera formats.  ACR 8.2 is just the plugin for the mechanics of Camera raw.  Normally they should both install, but sometime the converter doesn't.

LR4.2 and ACR 7.2 will open D800 files, as will LR 4.1 and ACR 7.1 and even ACR 6.7.with CS5.  The files may be corrupted.
Have you used any software to copy the files from the card to the computer hard-drive, other than LR or Windows Explorer?
To test whether the files are corrupted coming off the card, try some sample D800 files from DPReview’s site, and if those work but the files from your camera don't the files from your camera are corrupted.  The main issue people have had is that they've used an old Nikon Transfer V1 which trashes the headers of the newest Nikon cameras in ways that make them unrecognizable to Adobe software.  Another issue could be some USB drivers that are a bit iffy.  A suggestion would be to use Windows Explorer to copy files from your memory card to your computer's C drive then try importing from there.

  • Frame7.1 wont import Photoshop CS5.1 .jpg file

I am (reluctantly) in the process of migrating from Windows XP +
    Photoshop CS V8.0 to Windows 7/64bit + Photoshop CS5.1.
Framemaker 7.1 works well in both XP and W7/64, including generating
PDFs. I can import .jpg files written by Photoshop CS. Etc.
    ... except...
If I open a known-good (already imported) .jpg file using Photoshop
CS5.1 and, without making any changes, save it, Framemaker can no
longer import it, neither directly or by reference:
"The filter encountered an error and could not complete the
        translation".
It appears the Photoshop CS5.1 writes a different .jpg file format
than Photoshop CS (rhetorical: how can it be acceptable for CS5.1 to
change the format of a basic .jpg file? but I digress...).
Examining the original .jpg file vs. the CS5 .jpg file I find:
    - The new file is smaller (79KB vs. 82KB) - note both are small!
    - The contents (examined using a binary editor) are quite different.
    - Both versions display identically, in both CS and CS5.1 and in
       various viewers.
I have tried various experiments trying to understand this and have
had no luck. I can open the CS5 .jpg file in Photoshop CS and save it
again but Framemaker will not open this version either, same error.
This is not a RAM size issue (8GB), swap space issue, or anything else
related to the computer hardware. All SW updates are current, etc.
I have tried importing into a new, default template file, etc.
So, I tried saving as .bmp and the first time I tried to import it
Framemaker died immediately: no stack trace, no error messages, the
Frame process was just gone. After restarting, the 2nd attempt I got a
black rectangle of the correct size, but all black = not usable.
Photoshop CS + Framemaker has worked well for many years, so I know
    this is a CS5 issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make CS5.1 generate a "standard" .jpg
    file?
Anyone have any ideas on how to import CS5.1 images using
    Framemaker 7.1?
Please don't advocate upgrading Framemaker to V10... Adobe provides zero
information on migration (from any version) and the last time we did
this cost us many man-months of work to "fix" 14K+ pages in 50+
manuals. We will stay with XP/CS and "eat" the new W7/CS5 system
    before we move to FM10.
    Thanks

AG: IIRC, the FM7.1 JPG filter only reads the older JFIF header format JPG files, while the CS5 Photoshop and many other applications write EXIF headers in the JPG (yes , the standard evolved).
We also had a problem with JPEG 5 (legacy) vs. JPEG 2000 (newer) encoding, not in FM, but in the rendered PDFs at our print shop. The Xerox engine needed an update to fix that.
Using JPEGs in FM has various considerations, some already mentioned in this thread. But the biggest concern, in my view, is cascading compression damage. JPEG compression is always "lossy", and the artifacts at higher compression, or after successive compressions, are often visually distracting (and may be aggravated if sharpening is also applied). Even at NO compression, there are losses due to the transforms
Unless you are shooting .RAW, your camera is compressing from frame buffer to JPEG. When you re-save from your photo editor, regardless of edits, it gets re-compressed if saved to JPEG. When you render to PDF, it may get both down-samped and re-compressed again depending on PDF settings. If you post-process (optimize or reduce file size) in Acrobat, it can get down-sampled and re-compressed again.
So I shoot JPEG with as little compression as possible (RAW has other considerations). I edit in PhotoShop and save as EPS, which is a very inefficient format space-wise, but is UNcompressed*, and is a very efficient format both performance- and stability-wise in FM. I save the EPS at the resolution desired in the PDF (usually 200 dpi). Yes, it does get (and needs to be) re-compressed during Distill, but we've skipped one needless re-comp, and avoided another down-sample. We don't further optimize in Acrobat post because the images are already optimal.
EPS also supports both RGB and CMYK models, whereas JPEG is strictly RGB (or, beware: indexed color). And EPS is generally unmolested by Mr.Bill's GDI, which is crucial for color-managed CMYK.
    * TIFF can also be uncompressed, and CMYK, but can be a performance issue in FM.
The Wiki page for JPEG, btw, is presently vandalized:
"The name "JPEG" stands for Joint Photosaic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the JPEG standard and also other standards. It was discovered by <likely name of vandal redacted> of the Philippines."

  • Will not read D800 NEF files

Lightroom will not read Nikon D800 NEF files.  I have updated lightroom twice,  first to 4.1 and second to 4.2 and in neither case would the files import.  I have read several forum entries that say these files are compatible with Lightroom and/or to update Lightroom.  Anyone have an answer?  This is getting really aggravating!

Nikon Transfer is obsolete and should not be used.  The Transfer option of an up-to-date ViewNX2 should be ok.  I would hesitate to use something that tries to be very consumer friendly like Windows Photo Transfer in case it is extracting JPG previews from the NEFs instead of actually transferring the NEF files, unchanged, but if you can determine they are really raw files, not just JPGs or JPGs renamed to NEF, then it’s probably ok—the NEFs will be much larger than the JPGs so that’s a way to tell.  I think you should test with a few photos, waiting long enough to make sure you do actually get previews rendered in LR’s Import area.
Personally I just use Windows Explorer and copy the files from my card in a card-reader to my local hard-drive then do an LR Add Import from there.  I use a codec-pack that allows Windows Explorer to let me see the JPG-previews that are embedded into the raw files so I am not copying blind.

  • HELP!  iMac won't show my Nikon D800 NEF files.

Nikon D800 NEF files will transfer from my Nikon D800 to my iMac, but they will show only as a "list" in the folder that I transfer them to.  They will not show as thumbnails, nor open with "image preview".  Tiff and JPEGs will transfer and show as thumbnails and open with all my processing programs.  But I need to be able to see the NEF thumbnails on my iMac. The NEF's will also not open in Adobe Lightroom.   Image files will open with Camera Raw and Photoshop CS6 even though they don't show as thumbnails.  Everything worked until I installed Snow Leopard.

  • .nef files no longer open in Photoshop CS3

    Hi
I have  Nikon D60 and recently started shooting in raw when I discovered that Photoshop allows you to then edit the files to a much greater extent before converting them to .jpg.
.nef files used to open automatically in Photoshop (in a separate window, seemingly a sort of add-on designed for raw files?). Now when I try, the software tells me that they are 'the wrong kind of document'.
What's changed / broken? Or have I suddenly forgotten a vital step....?
I've tried downloading a newer version of camera raw, to no avail...
    Thanks for your help

The D60 was first supported by Adobe Camera Raw version 4.4.
Make sure you update your ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) plug-in to the latest (and last) version of that plug-in compatible with CS3, which is version 4.6.

Just imported a large picture library from Aperture to LR 5.7.1- Can't view Nikon D800 NEF files in LR5. The projects and files loaded - but no thumbnail view of the image

I have a Nikon D50 nef on my desktop. Double-clicking on it opens Photoshop, which launches Adobe Camera Raw. If you get that far and can make adjustments in the ACR panel, you are fine. That's what opens first.
Then you click "Open" in ACR and your nef opens in Photoshop and the document tab on top gives the .nef extension. You make your edits there, but if you close Photoshop, you won't save it as nef, it won't be in the Save file list. You save it as psd for example and close Photoshop.
You now have a nef with develop settings on your desktop and the psd you saved out of Photoshop.
All perfectly normal as J.J. said, Photoshop will edit the nef file, but it will be saved in a format other than nef.

If it requires a Photoshop CS5 re-install, (I belief that it may fix the problem) and re-install the two third party plugins (NIK Viveza) and (Onone Perfect Resize) how and where do I get to the proper Adobe upload page to do that.
    I have tried to fix this problem by changing the memory allocations, I have spend many hours on it and are very disgusted with it but it needs to be fixed. The current memory settings are;
    Ram available = 1588 MB
    Range = 873 -1143 MB
Recommended Photoshop usage range =  857  however I have tried every setting to max and in between. Nothing works. Current setting = 1588 (max)
The Photoshop I use is registered, I have product # and order # .

  • D800 RAW files will not open in Photoshop CS6

I have just installed the CS6 upgrade to Photoshop CS4 Extended, but now the software will not read the RAW files from my D800.
I have followed Adobe's instructions to check that I have the correct RAW plug-in (7.0.0.308) which I have.  I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled the software without success.  I do not want to convert my RAW files into DNG files, so I have ignored that step.
The 'Open in Photoshop' instruction in Lightroom 4 does not open my D800 RAW files either, although the files can be opened in Lightroom 4 OK.
Any idea what the problem is?

Brilliant!  ACR 7.1 Beta allows D800 RAW files to be opened within CS6 and it also allows Photoshop 4 to open D800 RAW files in Photoshop CS6.
It says that the Beta version will expire on 30/6/2012 after which it will keep advising on a daily basis although it will still work.  Any idea, what happens next?   Does Adobe issue a proper ACR 7.1 and distribute it as part of the update service?
