Windows 8.1 pro hyper-v memory usage

Hello,
I'm running windows 8.1 pro on a laptop with 8gb of ram. When running hyper-v i noticed that windows never seems to use more then 85% of the system memory (something that never happened in 8).
Take a look at the following screenshot:
Windows says 1247mb available, 120mb free and 1127mb standby!
Is this normal? is there any reason why windows refuses to use the standby memory for the VM needs?
Thanks.
Best regards, Johnny Tordgeman.
My Blog

So, compare what the hypervisor is allocating to the VM vs. what the VM is consuming.
They are two different ways of looking at similar (but not equal) things.  In the VM it is the virtual memory manager, outside the VM it is the hypervisor and the physical RAM constraints.
With Dynamic Memory there is a buffer that is given to the VM but never consumed, as when it is it gets added to.  So there is always a state of the VM running with a little extra, and never consuming all the RAM until the physical RAM resource is consumed
and the physical limit is reached.
If your VM is at its maximum that can be assigned using Dynamic Memory, then your applications within the VM could consume it all, as there would be no more allocated to the buffer for the VM.

I am using Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V. Can I use a Synology NAS and create iSCSI LUNs which are shared between TWO virtual machines (running Linux) - a shareable disk.
Or is this possible only in Windows 2012 Server?

  • Win 7 pro 32 bit memory usage

early 2006 macpro 1,1. installed win 7 pro 32bit on separate wd black caviar640gb. win says it can see my 5gb memory installed, but usable is only 1.99gb. how can i get it to use more of my memory? won't win 32 bit use 4gb??
    thanks

32 bit Windows OS can only address 3GB RAM nominally. The actual address space that is addressable depends on system architecture but could range from 2 to 3.75 GB. Even theoretically 32 bit system can only address 2^32 addresses. Then remove reserved/shared address space from that limit.
If you want to address 4GB or more RAM you will need the 64 bit version of Windows.

    Hi, everyone
I got a new t440p 20ANA00UHH (8GB RAM, win8 64bits) about one week ago. It works really well, but its memory usage  confused me. In Task Manager, the "Performance" option shows memory is 68% (5.4G in use), but "Users" option shows memory usage 66% (1019.5M in use). Is that normal ? I just opened some websites and word files.

  • Memory leaks- high memory usage svchost.exe

    hello!
im having a kind of a similar problem. Im using a Q6600 with 4Gb of RAM running on Windows 7 x64. My physical memory usage history is 1.75GB idle but my CPU usage looks good ~ 0%.
In Windows Task Manager when i arranged the memory column, the process with the highest memory usge is svchost.exe with 116,572K. And i have 14 svchost.exe in my computer! I opened process exporer and check the legitimate of all those svchost.exe
and they are all legit. When i look at the properties of the highest svchost.exe in process explorer, the services which is running under it is as follows
    AudioEndPointBuilder c:\Windows\System32\Audiosrv.dll
    CscService c:\Windows\System32\cscsvc.dll
    hidserv c:\Windows\System32\hidserv.dll
    Netman c:\Windows\System32\netman.dll
    PcaSvc c:\Windows\System32\pcasvc.dll
    SysMain c:\Windows\System32\sysmail.dll
    TrkWks c:\Windows\System32\trkwks.dll
    UxSms c:\Windows\System32\uxsms.dll
    wudfsvc c:\Windows\System32\WUDFSvc.dll
    All are legit DLLS.
Is it normal to have 14 svchost.exe running at the same time(system, local service, network service in Task Manager)
and how can i reduce the memory usage of the svchost.exe?

    Hi,
There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can
be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started.
If you would like to reduce the usage of this service, I could share the following article with you:

    Hope it helps.

  • High Page Pool Memory Usage on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster

    Hi,
may someone has a similar Problem or can give me a helping Hand.
    I'm having a 9Node Cluster ( Windows 2012 R2 , fully Patched from RTM Version on )
The Cluster is connected to a SAN which is an Equallogic ( Firmware 6.11).  HitKit Driver 4.7.1
The System running clean and without any Event Logs until the Page Pool Usage of the Nodes turn over 15 GB of Paged pool Memory.
I monitore that via a Performance Counter ( \Memory\Pool Paged Bytes)
otherwise I have no indication by for example the Process View, the Calculated Sum on the Overview ( TaskManager / Memory ) but shows on the contraditory the 15GB an Memory Usage.
I downloaded the RAMMap Tool from Sysinternals but that doesnt show me any possible Information for the information , acutally the Information differs from RAMMap to the Performance Counter ( RAMMap = 251MB, Performance Counter = 15GB )
Just to make that point clear , there is No Information beside the Sum of Page File on the System Page and the PerfCounter that so much Page Pool Memory is used by any Process . Therefor it is hidden which process "needs" it.
I tried many thinks ,  like search for a Memory Hole in the Drivers , Hyper-V Stack , Equallogic and hoped for resolution with any new Patch which had a "Memory Leak" Information to them , but so far none has made a difference , maybe someone
    has the same Problem.
My Cluster has routher large VMs on it compared to the Numa Seize ( VM 4-128GB, on DELL R720 ( 2x CPU (8C) 384GB RAM  )
( The VMs have also a High IO Usage , as there RAM is used as a RAM Database ( zb. Mongo DB ) )
    Regards
    M

    Hi Alex,
there is something wrong here and not an "normal" Memory Leak , as for that reason I would see the amount of Page Pool Memory assigned to a given Process.
If that would be the Case I could use RAMMap or even Vmmap to adresse the Paged Pool usage, but those Tools dont reflect the Usage like the PerfCounter does.
The Windows Driver Kit for a 2012 R2 System is WDK 8.1 which has a necessity of VS2013 ( Important: Before
installing WDK 8.1 Update, you need to install Visual Studio 2013. See the Visual Studio links on this page.)  My Last Hope was to get poolmon.exe and identify the Source for the "Paged Pool" Usage .
We are having that Problem now since the Early Days of Windows 2012R2 and because the Usage is quite "hidden" we only found out , when we ran out of Memory without knowing why.
Worst Usage Rates where up to 150GB of Paged Pool  !! given a RAM 385GB ( Dell R720)  that is quite a Number.
Im wondering if noone else with a cluster ( seems that the Node numbers in a Cluster and the "RAM" Seize of the VM ( >32GB )  have a tremendous impact on that given Problem , with a 4 Node Cluster the Problem isnt so big )

  • Windows 8.1 Pro not booting after install of Hyper V - ASUS z87 + intel 4670K

    Hi,
I am running windows 8.1 pro on a intel 4670K 4th Gen Haswell CPU and ASUS z87 plus motherboard. 16gb of kingston hyperx ddr1600 memory.
I have enabled virtualisation technology in the bios.  CPU has SLAT.... or Extended Page Table, as intel likes to refer to it.
When I install HyperV platform and management tools the computer configures and reboots
AFter reboot it brings up the blue window image and spinning circle of dots for a while then reboots. It does the same thing again and then reboots and goings into repair mode and asks me to do a system restore. It then restores to before they HyperV install.
I've tried turning off xHCI mode (i.e USB 3.0) in the bios as this seemed to be a known issue with some gigabyte boards. This did not rectify the issue
Updated to latest asus mainboard bios 1405.  Same issue still occurs upon install of hyper V.
Automatic repair does not work and I have to restore from system restore point.
I performed a clean boot after installing the feature and it still couldnt boot to windows.. it just sits at windows logo and then restarts a few times and then launches the startup repair. Once the startup repair begins, the only way I can get into windows
is restoring to a system restore point from before the hyperv feature install.

  • Installing Hyper-v Windows Server 2008 R2 on to Windows 8.1 Pro

I downloaded a 180 day trial hyper-v Windows 2008 R2 version to my Windows 8.1 Pro system.  I have 16 GB of Ram, and my system is an i7-4700HQ CPU @ 2.40Ghz.  Hyper-v manager is running, and I can click action, new virtual machine, and I can
give it a name.  I have chosen to install the virtual machine on my D: drive.  It is an empty 400GB basic partition, except the swap file is located here (system managed).  I used Generation1 for the virtual machine, and gave it a startup memory
of 2000MB, which was suggested on another website.  On configuring the network connection, I left it as Not Connected - plan to change later.  On connecting the virtual hard disk, I was not certain what to do between the 3 selections.  Default,
Create a virtual hard disk, Use an existing virtual hard disk, or Attach a virtual hard disk later.  I chose the default, "Create a virtual hard disk" because it is a new virtual machine.  On Installation Options, I tried the "Install
an operating system from a bootable  CD/DVD-ROM.  The 180 day trial was copied to this CD.  When starting the virtual machine, I received boot failed message, so I deleted the virtual machine in Hyper-v manager and associated folders on D.
I don't know what to do next?  Should I try to import a virtual machine from a configuration file somehow?

You cannot install Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on Windows 8.1  (it sounds like that is what you are trying to do).
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/abfc0b3f-7408-4d9c-a467-ff2318802730/installing-windows-server-2008-in-hyperv-and-accessing-from-same-machine-running-windows-81?forum=w8itprovirt
You can install Server 2008 R2 in a VM.  Attaching the ISO to the VM and booting should work just fine - or download an evaluation VHD and then attach the evaluation VHD to your VM and boot.

  • Problem Intalling hyper-v Windows 2012 R2 on a Windows 8.1 Pro machine

    First Try:
I am trying to install hyper-v Windows server 2012 from the Microsoft site below on to a Windows 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V Manager.
The Windows 2012 R2 ISO I downloaded from the link at the bottom of the screen.
I am downloading and copying this ISO to CD.  In hyper-v manager, right pane, I am clicking New, Virtual Machine, Next, Name (2012 R2), check the box “Store the virtual machine in a different location (F:\Windows 2012 R2), which is
a partition that will used for all my hyper-v OSs.  Click Next, select Generation 2, Next, Startup memory 512 with box checked “Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine, Next, Configure Network connection (chose my virtual switch I setup
in Virtual Switch Manager, Next.  For Connect Hard Disk, I chose “Create virtual hard disk, and went with the defaults. Clicked Next, and in Installation Options, I chose “Install an operating system from a bootable image file (media Image
file (iso) – browsed to my DVD device and chose the saved iso), and then clicked Finish button.
The virtual machine “2012 R2” appeared in the off state.  I double clicked it to open the virtual machine, and clicked the start button.
Received Boot Failed.  EFI SCSI Device.
    PXE Network using IPv4 ……..
    PXE-E18: Server response Timeout.
    Boot Failed.  EFI Network
    Boot Failed.  EFI SCSI Device.
    No Operating System was Loaded.
Press a key to retry the boot sequence…..
    http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/product-training/windows-server
    Second Try:
I did the same process but changed select Generation 2 to Generation 1, and browsed to the ISO saved on my HDD rather than from a CD.
This time the Windows 2012 installed, but came up with a blue screen with the time showing in big numbers, and the words “Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in.
When I clicked Ctrl-Alt-Del:  the PC screen cleared and showed selections (Lock, Switch User, Sign Out, Task Manager).
I tried to switch user to my Microsoft Account, but it only redisplayed the previous blue screen with time ect…
    Bill Thompson, [email protected]

You mount the ISO file directly to the VM, stored on the local disk.
If you mount the ISO and boot into a VM you should not get a logon prompt - you should get the ISO boot prompt to install and if you fail to respond the VHD is booted.
I am suspecting you have a  corrupt download of the ISO.

  • Indesign CC freezes and maxes out memory usage in Windows 7

I'm having a problem where Indesign will freeze and when I check on it in Task Manager I can see the memory usage climbing until it's using all free memory. I have to kill the task to get it to stop. I have 8GB and it maxed out at 6.5gb this morning. I'm on Windows 7 Pro and am using the 64-bit version of Indesign with the most recent update.

The document I'm working on now is only about 35 pages with 1-3 images per page, nothing too crazy. I don't have any extra plugins from what I recall - how do I check?
I'm using Photoshop and sometimes Illustrator at the same time, but have plenty of free memory until ID goes nuts.

  • Window Memory usage even after closing windows

I've included links to a test app that does nothing but
launch a window, play a sound, close window / repeat.
When application launches it uses about 20mb of memory. When
you click on the only button, it will launch a secondary window
that will simply play a wav file. (I set the volume low but you may
    want to mute it :D)
After launching and closing the window several times the
memory usage goes up considerably and *never* falls back a
significant %. (I got it to about 100MB before I decided to quit
trying to increase the memory usage. Right now it's been running
w/o any user interaction since opening about 10 windows and it's
fairly stable at around 61MB (although that appears to be
    increasing w/o user interaction).
Does anyone know of any methods I can use to ensure that the
memory consumed by secondary windows does not just persist forever
even after closing the window? Is there something I'm doing wrong
    here?
    Example Code:
    http://www.vf-server.com/air/memorytest.air
    (AIR)
    http://www.vf-server.com/air/memorytest.zip
    (source ZIP)
Note: When I *minimize* the window it looks like garbage
collection is forced and app drops back to 11MB (on restore back to
    19mb).
Edit: note in your task manager, application appears as
    JBTest.exe

You can call System.gc() to force the garbage collector to
    run.
Try removing the event listeners when they aren't needed
anymore. I think it is more difficult for the gc to cleanup objects
when there are host objects (like Sound) refering to JavaScript
objects and JavaScript objects refering to host objects, so you
need to be especially careful about those. It SHOULD clean them up
eventually, but it may take longer for it to figure out that those
objects are no longer in use.
You might also clear the secondaryWindow reference in the
parent document when the window closes. That reference might retard
    garbage collection, too.

  • Hyper V under Windows 8.1 Pro

I am a customer who has just invested in the full version of Windows 8.1 Pro (x64)
NB: There is no client-server relationship here, just one PC.
However, I have important 32-bit only applications that I have found won't even install on this 64-bit OS, and they need a GPU to run them.
PS: Please don't suggest that I do not use the 32-applications, as 64-bit versions are not available. Thank you.
Anyway, so to solve this I have installed a 32-bit Windows version in a VM using Hyper V, and my applications will install ok within that VM. So far, so good.
However, they still won't run because they can't detect the GPU!
How do I get this "RemoteFX vGPU" thing working so they can detect the GPU in my machine?
This must be a very, very common scenario for everyone thinking of upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro.
Will Microsoft help out, or do I need to maintain a second PC just for my 32-bit applications?

  • After installing Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 Pro, my computer won't boot

I have a somewhat new (June 2013) HP laptop originally running Windows 8 Pro. I installed the Hyper-V component right away and it was running great. After testing Windows 8.1 Pro on another computer a couple months ago, I decided to upgrade my HP laptop and
Hyper-V continued to work great after the upgrade.
Yesterday, after a Windows Update failed, I was not able to boot my laptop. It would hang with the HP Logo and spinning circle at the point when the Boot Manager normally starts up Windows. Trying to do a recovery reported a failure, but no specific reason
except to say boot failed and that a Restart might correct the error, but it would just hang on the HP Logo every time I would try to boot. I reinstalled the Windows 8.1 Pro OS and the laptop was working fine until I would install Hyper-V.
I have gone thru this sequence 3 times. The first time, I pulled the latest Windows Updates, then installed Hyper-V, IIS and some other components and after this install required a Restart, my laptop hung at the HP Logo. The second time, I did not enable
any Windows Updates, but installed Hyper-V and IIS and again, after the Restart my laptop hung. So, the final time, I only installed Hyper-V and after the Restart, my laptop hung once again.
Since Hyper-V used to work, it would not seem to make sense that I have a hardware compatibility problem. I have also run the extensive built in firmware Disk tests and other diagnostics taking several hours to complete and these all passed.
I am now using my laptop without Hyper-V and it is working fine, but I hoping to find a reason/solution for the problem caused by installing Hyper-V so that I can once again install and use it.

    Hi,
Generally speaking, when you add feature like Hyper-V, system would take a long time to get this feature configured. if your computer still stay updates configuration steps, you can use Windows 8.1 installation image to repair system. In system repair mode,
you can access into Command Prompt mode, and check CBS.log which located at C:\Windows\logs\CBS. This log file would record Windows installation process, we may find the problem of Hyper-V stallation.

  • Hyper-V won't install on x64 Windows 8.1 Pro

    I can't seem to get Hyper-V installed.
    I am running Windows 8.1 Pro 64
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Add/Remove Features
    2. Add Hyper-V, and all subsets
    3. Click OK.
    4. Click Restart when prompted.
    5. Computer will reboot and then work on configuring features.  At 91% the computer will stop and display the error message "Unable to add feature..." and then roll back entirely.
Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and fix?
    Thanks,
