Windows 8.1 Pro join to domain issues....

We bought some Windows 8.1 laptops and purchased the upgrade to the Pro version.  When I attempt to join the laptops to the domain, it prompts me for domain credentials, I enter them, and I get an error....
Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "mydomain.com" failed.
The name will remain "mydomain.com".  The error was:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Of course, the domain DOES exist and we have plenty of Windows 7 workstations signed into it just fine.  I hit OK then login to the laptop using a domain account.  At this point, I get an error telling me that no logon servers are available to authenticate.
This is a Windows 2008 domain controlled environment.  Everything works fine otherwise for the Windows 7 systems, only these Windows 8.1 systems are having any issues.  The new laptops are even showing up in DNS on the domain controller.
Any ideas what I might be missing?  Is there something special about joining Windows 8.1 Pro systems to a domain?

OK; took a couple of more days than planned to get back on site.  We're continuing to do testing, but here's the IPConfig /ALL that was requested.  10.0.0.1 is the gateway, 10.0.0.10 is the DC.  The laptop is "Me-L" and the domain is "mydomain.com".
The below was pulled after getting IP information assigned via DHCP.  The laptop is not joined to the domain at the moment and login is a local account.

  • Joined to domain issues?

Has anyone else had this issue. I installed Windows 10 9926 as a hyper-v VM. Everything worked on it, the Start button and the cortana search bar. Once I joined it to the domain and rebooted the start menu doesn't work or the search bar next to the start
button. When I click the start button nothing happens, as well as on the search bar. Anybody else experience this. I also have the update installed.

    Hi Anthony,
    Please note the findings below:
    1. I was checking the Lync Client configuration on one of the PC that is not joined to the domain, still on the domain network via site to site VPN connection. I noticed that the Connected Lync Server varies: sipinternal.domain.com, sipexternal.domain.com,
lync.domain.com (Pointing to the Edge Server IP).
    2. Edge Server External Settings: Single IP address with the FQDN set to lync.domain.com for all 3 services and the following ports configured. Access Edge Service: 5061, Web Conferencing Edge Service: 444, A/V Edge Service: 443 with NAT enabled public
IPv4 address. I have checked the replication status between the Front End and Edge Server, it is up to date.
    3. In regard to the https://lyncdiscover.domain.com, I don't have the lyncdiscover.domain.com published, but it is pointing to the NAT enabled public IPv4 address which is assigned for A/V Edge Services.
    4. For the port forwarding, I am using the Cisco Meraki router.
Please advise if there are there is something that I am missing.
    Thanks!

  • Win7 pro joins essential2012r2 domain profile migrate but has encrypted folders

Have a workstation set as workgroup that had encrypted folders for user. Workstation renamed and join to Essentials 2012r2 server using utility. It also merged user profile to domain. User did not say about encrypted folders. Now can not access files in
folders. I have located the certificate and key from original user profile. How to recover access to encrypted files?  Does workstations need to be dropped from domain and change back to original name and workgroup?  User profile is already associated
    with domain profile.
    Thanks for any help

    Hello,
The folders were encrypted with EFS on the desktop of a user profile when the system was on a workgroup.  Then the computer name was changed and join to the domain for Essentials 2012r2 with the connect utility.  The utlilty then migrated the users
profile to the domain login.  The folders are now on this users profile desktop.  When looking at the security access it is displaying the old user/oldwksname as authorized to access.  These folders can not be moved or copied as the domain user
does not have permission to do so.
I locted the cert and key from the old user profile/appdata path.  Can these be used to gain access.  under cert manager of domain profile it does not have the associated key to the cert for export.
    thank you

I have also run the automatic WSUS "fix me" 971058 on the workstation.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro has error while joining domain, while windows 7 pro has no problem to join in the same network

I am having the same issue as posted in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/6ea57e5f-6e9d-49bd-9dd7-832ea84c0276/windows-81-pro-will-not-join-domain?forum=w8itpronetworking
There are a few other people have the same issues.  However there was no real solution provided although the post was marked as answered.  I am posting it here again and hopefully I can get some help to solve this issue.
We got two new PCs, one with windows 7 and the other with windows 8.1 Pro.  In the same network with domain, the windows 7 pc has no problem at all to join the domain.  However the windows 8.1 Pro won't join the domain. On the windows 8.1 Pro computer,
I can ping the other computers in the network.  The error message says:
An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain "cmi" could not be contacted. ...
In my case, the domain name is "CMI".  I am sure the DNS setting is correct.  What did I do wrong?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I tried the solution in that article.
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters folder, there is no
NeutralizeNT4Emulator.  So I followed the instructions and created one, and set the value to 1. Then I restarted the computer and tried to join the domain again.  I got the same error.  Below is more from the netsetup log file:

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The domain name "cmi" might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain "cmi":
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.cmi
The following domain controllers were identified by the query:
    cmi-dc2.cmi
    cmi-dc1.cmi
However no domain controllers could be contacted.
    Thanks.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro Will Not Join Domain

    Hello,
I know this a bit lengthy, but hopefully all the details will better help you guys understand my problem.
We just purchased an HP Pavilion Windows 8.1 laptop for our office along with the Windows 8.1 Pro Pack upgrade. When I went to install the pro upgrade, it accepted my key and started the upgrade process, but before the install completed, an error was generated
that stated "Something went wrong. " No error code was generated. I restarted the laptop, it did some updates, and when I logged back in, I checked under the computer properties and noticed that the OS version was changed to Windows 8.1 Pro with
Media Center, so I assumed that it installed. I checked for corrupted files in the command prompt and no corrupted files were found.
So, the next thing I tried to do was join the laptop to our domain. I have joined XPs, Vistas, and 7s with no problems, but for some reason, Windows 8.1 does not want to join the domain. Just to be clear, I have the laptop plugged in via ethernet and the
wifi off, I checked that the DNS of the laptop matched the DNS of the server, and all firewalls have been disabled. It seems to find the domain, but when it asks for the credentials to join the server, it returns an error stating that the domain could not
be contacted or information was entered incorrectly. I know I am entering the correct credentials because, just to test, I created a new user account on a different machine and used the credentials to join the server. I pinged the server from the laptop and
vice-versa, and all packets were received with no errors, so I know that they are "seeing" each other. Also, If I join the laptop to a Workgroup instead of the domain, I am able to access the server using the same credentials that it will not accept
when attempting to join the domain.
I am baffled. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I had exactly the same issue as above.  When I rebooted my machine, it now shows that the upgrade to Pro Pack with media center is installed.
Haven't tried adding to a domain yet...  will post an update when/if it fails.  No reply means it joined fine after rebooting it from a failed attempt as above.   I suspect that this had something to do with the fact that I had just logged
on to the machine and ran setup for the first time.
Reboot after setting up the computer for the first time, then proceed with the upgrade to 8.1 Pro Pack and I suspect that this issue won't occur.

  • Are sideloading keys required to sideload Apps to domain joined OEM/retail Windows 8.1 Pro devices?

    Hello,
I want to sideload a Microsoft Store App to a Lenovo Thinkpad 2 device. The device has an OEM / retail version of Windows 8.1 Pro installed and is part of an active directory domain network.
With this preconditions and according to announcements by Microsoft, it seems to be possible since May 2014 to deploy Apps directly to these devices. Without the need to buy a sideloading key.
To check this, I have generated an code signing certificate with makecert/Pvk2Pfx and then I followed the instructions in this
    blog article.
Everything went fine, only the actual deployment with add-appxPackage didn't work. The installation aborts with the error message, that a developer or sideloading license is required, as no license or sideloading policy can be applied.
Can anybody in this forum give me some advice to these questions:
    1. Does the new sideload licensing model for May 2014 also applies to OEM/retail versions of Windows 8.1, or is is volume licensing required?
    2. Has anybody managed to successfully sideload an App to a OEM / retail Windows 8.1 Pro device?
    3. At the moment I don't have access to the domain network. I can login with a domain user locally but changes to the local group policies and to the local certificate stores can't be confirmed by the domain controller. I'm not an administrator, so might this
    be a source of error?
    Thanks
    Tobias

    Hello Tobias,
Please check if you can normally sideload Windows Store App in other domain-joined OEM computer.
About the OEM issue, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer.
    Best regards,

  • Download issue when Windows 7 Pro joins a Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

    Hi,
I purchased 2 new Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop computers that came with Windows 7 Professional operating system with SP1.
There were no Microsoft updates installed yet.  After I added one of these Dell computers to the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, I was not able to download several items.
    Below are several examples:
    1) I downloaded the Norton anti-virus installation file.  This file is not the full installation of Norton; it is more of a file where you execute it and it will download the full installation from the Internet like from their Norton web
site.  So when I executed this installation file, it does not download the full installation files.
It just hung at the screen saying “Downloading” and it will finally stop with an error (don’t remember the error message).
Note: If I have the full Norton installation file then I am able to install it on this computer with no problems.
    2) I downloaded the Adobe Reader installation file.  This file is not the full installation of Adobe Reader; it is more of a file where you execute it and it will download the full installation from the Internet like from their Adobe web
site.  So when I executed this installation file, it hung at the downloading part and then it will error out with a “Actionlist Not Found” message.
Note: If I have the full Adobe Reader installation file then I am able to install it on this computer with no problems.
    3) I installed Microsoft Office 2010 Standard version on this computer.
I configured Microsoft Outlook to retrieve emails from my email provider (pop and smtp settings).
After configuring Microsoft Outlook, I was able to send emails through Microsoft Outlook successfully (and very quickly), but he was unable to retrieve my emails. The progress bar for the Receiving in the "Outlook Send/Receive Progress" box
shows no progress. The Progress bar is not moving. There is a message at the bottom of Microsoft Outlook stating "Receiving message 1 of 6 (x.xx KB of x.xx MB)" and it is very slow. My new emails were not being retrieved at all.
I tried various pop and smtp servers that was available for my email provider, but all had the same effect.
    4) I can access certain web sites (e.g.
www.yahoo.com, www.cnn.com) while I cannot access other web sites like
www.usatoday.com, my web hosting email site.
Note: I had a Dell computer with Windows XP Professional operating system and this computer does not have any of the above issues.
The above are only a few examples that I have experienced.
If I removed this Dell OptiPlex 3010 computer from the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory then I still experience the same issue.
So as another test, I setup the other new Dell OptiPlex 3010 with the same Windows 7 Professional OS with SP1.
This time, I did not join the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory and I was able to successfully download the full Norton installation files, download the full Adobe Reader installation files, download my emails from Microsoft Outlook 2010, etc.
But once I joined this computer to the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory then I am not able to download these files and emails at all.
It seems like there might be some group policy or a security setting that is preventing these downloads so I disabled the group policy on the Windows Server 2008 AD and Windows 7 Profession OS, but it didn’t resolve the issue.
I disabled all of the firewall programs on this Windows 7 Professional OS, but it still did not resolve the issue.
Since the Windows Server 2008 AD did not have DHCP installed, I installed DHCP and setup a scope.
Then configured the Windows 7 Professional OS to obtain an IP address, but it didn’t resolve the issue.
If I move this Windows 7 Professional computer to another network where it did not have any Active Directory; it just had a wireless router serving DHCP then everything works on the Windows 7 Pro computer.
Any ideas what is the root cause when a Windows 7 Professional computer join a Windows Server 2008 AD?
    Thanks,
    wl_tech

    Hi,
Could you please tell some information for the AD environment and how it connect to the internet?
Regarding 3rd party installlers didn't work as expected, please also seek help in their offical website.
For outlook not receiving emails, could you please take a look in
Event Viewer and see if there are any special errors logged there?
And when trying to access the website like
www.usatoday.com, any special errors IE showed out?

  • Windows 8.1 Pro will not let me join to domain!

    Hi There,
I have purchased a new computer for the company I work for and along with it a copy of Windows 8.1 Pro.
The computer is an HP Envy.
I inserted the Windows 8.1 Pro DVD that we bought separately and installed it.
it never asked me for a product key during installation.
When I get to the desktop I tried to join it to the domain. However the
domain field and network id field are grayed out.
I tried typing updating the product key that is included with the OEM DVD case I got however it says it is not valid for this copy of Windows.
Can somebody please help m on this?

When installing Windows 8 on a system that uses OEM Authentication 3.0 (OA 3.0), the license key that is embedded in the system firmware is used during installation. For most Windows 8 media, this also means that the version of Windows matching the license
key is also installed. See KB2796988.
In your scenario, you have a system that came originally with Windows 8.1, not Windows 8.1 Professional, so the version that was installed is Windows 8.1. You can easily convert the installation to Windows 8.1 Professional using the
Add Features functionality and entering your Windows 8.1 Professional key.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro Cannot Connect to Domain Controllers through Wi-Fi

I have a domain joined Surface 2 Pro running 8.1 Pro Update that is suddenly unable to connect to the domain controllers on the local network. The machine is fully patched. I'm guessing that it is some network level security issue because the wi-fi is working:
It has no trouble connecting to my Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone.
It has no trouble connecting to other Wi-Fi at coffee shops etc.
It is connecting to my home Wi-Fi and gets an address from DHCP on the domain controllers, but can't ping the DCs, access the DCs through remote desktop even using their IP address.
It can ping the router and ping systems on the internet using their IP address rather than hostname.
I can fully access internet systems if I point it at DNS on the router but still cannot access internal systems by name or IP address.
The Wi-Fi network shows as a public network rather than a domain.
It will work fine when it is docked and using the dock's ethernet adapter.
If I use VPN to loop back through my router then I am able to fully access local systems.
None of the other systems on the network are experiencing the same issue.
I have tried the following which didn't work:
Switched off the Windows Firewall on the Windows 8.1 system and a domain controller.
Network Troubleshooting - which told me that the network seems OK but the DNS servers are not responding.
Uninstalling the Wi-Fi device and restarting the system to re-install it.
    Resetting TCP/IP.
I am not aware of any changes, but the system did install System Hardware Update 8/07/2014 (again!) but I can't recall if that was when the problem started or was just a coincidence.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Richard
    Richard-F

    Hi Richard,
    Apologize for my slow understanding.
I thought as it could obtain IP address from the DC, it should have connections between them.
For the current situation, you may take a try to disable the firewall on the DC, then check the port that used by AD environment is all available,
Active Directory and Active Directory Domain Services Port Requirements, you could take use of this tool:
PortQryUI - User Interface for the PortQry Command Line Port Scanner
If all available and issue still insists, then issue here seems to be restricted with the wireless router. You may try to contact the router side and see if they could offer any further useful information regarding this situation.

  • Joining Windows 2012 Server to SBS 2011 Domain

    Hi All,
I have been trying to get a new Windows 2012 Server to join a SBS 2011 domain. The error message I am getting is:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain: xxxx. The specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted.
I have a bunch of other Windows 7/XP workstations that have joined successfully. I have also tried disabling TCP/IP v6 on the 2012 server and joining the domain with the netdom command. The SBS 2011 server is listed as the primary DNS server on the 2012
    server.
What else can I try here?
    Thanks,
    DR.

I am having the same issue has the OP. I have my DNS settings pointing to the sbs server that hosts the domain and DNS. I am receiving the same error.

  • Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade

    Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
    1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
    2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
    3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
    An internal error occurred."
    Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):
    netbios connect: name1=BIGMAC name2=JEFFVM6
    netbios connect: local=bigmac remote=jeffvm6, name type = 0
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
    odssam_getgrnam gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Groups record for 'JEFFVM6$'!
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
kDSStdAuthNewUser was successful for account "jeffvm6$"
At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.

    The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro x64 update issue

Hi. Having installed Windows 8.1 Pro x64 on my business laptop (installed all drivers, fully updated it from Microsoft . . .) I joined it to the domain and installed needed apps. Then I put it in OU where updating of all computers inside that OU was via
WSUS. In WSUS updating is set to automatically download but notify for install. I noticed that in control panel - windows update there are number of updates waiting to be installed but in shut down menu I do not have either
update and restart or update and shut down - in other words there is no any notification that updates are waiting to be installed. I am not 100 % sure but I think when updating was directly from Microsoft update servers
update and restart and update and shut down were there. How to solve this - leave laptop to update itself via WSUS which is in fact recommended solution and have
update and restart and update and shut down. It is insane if I have always to go to control panel - windows update and check from there if there are some updates waiting to be installed.

    Hi,
Windows 8/8.1 will notify you that your PC will be restarted in X days to finish installing security updates on the right corner of the logon screen.
Here is an article talking about Minimizing restarts after automatic updating in Windows Update, please take a look for the notification:

Besides, we could also take a look at the following article regarding the notification of Windows update.

    Hello,
We try to login to our domain controller from a windows 8.1 pro laptop. The login is going good it looks like, but the user is nog getting the shares that the user expects to get. This is working with a windows 7 pro laptop but on a windows 8.1 pro laptop
this is not working. What should we do to resolve this ?
Also printers are not assigned to users although they are set in the DC.
    Regards,
    Thejo de Boer

    Hi Thejo de Boer,
According to your description ,I would like to confirm if the issue only occurred on this windows 8.1.
    Firstly, please check
    the file access permission.
Then, please check the event viewer to see if some error log appeared when the issue occurred.
