Windows 8.1 Pro SMB Sharing problem

Hi,
Would love some help.
I have a file server that I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.  Problem is, it broke my smb share to 2 Dune Media players and another PC running XBMC on the Openelec platform.  I have spent days scouring forums for information and tried
every reg hack and security/sharing fix I found but to no avail.  I have since refreshed windows 8.1.  I did however just have a breakthrough.
The problem is that the 3 devices above all worked great before the update, now I'm getting errors when ever I try to access a file on the smb share.  On my Windows 8.1 file server I have am running storage spaces with about 8 discs amounting to about
16TB of storage, plus an SSD with the operating system. What I just discovered is that if I share a folder on the C drive, it can be scanned and accessed from any of the media players.  Therefore it's only the 'storage space' drive that won't authenticate
an smb client.
Thanks
Allan Phillips

Thanks Alex, I had tried that a few times.  Finally after 3 weeks I found the solution on the WD forum.  Solution is as below.
Re: WD TV Live does not see shared windows USB drives that are connected via hub
Options

Well, nobody offered any opinion so far, but I was able to solve the mystery.
It is all about the old IPRStackSize of the LanmanServer (Windows NT is greeting us again).
I was taken off, because access seemed basically to work (at least with Windows machines).
But the Windows 8.1 event log then told me very clearly : event 2011, irpstacksize not large enough, please increase.
This event occurred whenever I tried to access the shared drives from my Android devices or especially from the WD TV Live. The only difference netween these 2 systems was that on the Android devices I could at
least see the drives (but could not really open them), while the WD TV Live did not even boither to show me the drives.
Now, I have no clue about the actual limits for the IRPStackSize in Windows 8.1 (the values changed from Windows version to Windows version). So I finally used the limit I found for older Windows systems :
32 (x20).
And it works now like a chram as it seems.
By the way - I found stories about older Windows systems, where people increased the value to 20 (x14). So I tried that value first. With the result that I could not access any drive from other network units at
all. So, the default value for this in Windows 8.1 must be even higher than that. I don;t know what it is, but 32 (x20) is obviously higher.
Long story short : it is a Windows 8.1 (possibly already Windows 8) problem. And it can be solved by creating manually an entry in the Registry to add the IRPStackSize parameter with the higher value (as you know,
when this parameter is missing, Windows uses a default value, which is obviously too small for drives connected to a hub and accessed by any kind of Linux systems.
I still don't have a clue, why the access request by a Linux based system requires obviously more stack size than a request by a Windows machine. That is still something that makes me shake my head.
Here a little procedure copied from Windows NT solutions :
1. Run regedit.
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
3. In the right pane, double-click the IRPStackSize value.
4. In the Value Data box, type a value that is larger than the value that is listed.
If you created the IRPStackSize value using the procedure described in step 4, the default value is 15. It is recommended that you increase the value by 3. Therefore, if the previous value was 11, type 14, and
then click OK.
5. Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.
If the problem persists after you complete the preceding procedure, try to increase the value of IRPStackSize even more. The maximum value for Windows 2000 is 50 (0x32 hex).
NOTE: If the IRPStackSize value does not already exist, use the following procedure to create it:
a.
In the Parameters folder of the registry, right-click the right pane.
b.
Point to New, and then click DWord Value.
c.
Type IRPStackSize.
IMPORTANT: Type "IRPStackSize" exactly as it is displayed because the value name is case-sensitive.

I have two PC-s, one is with windows  7 home premium  and the other one with  windows 8.1 pro op system.  They are wired via ethernet/ home network. Till I had old Windows  XP instead of Windows 7, the two PC-s were connected,
file sharing and device sharing was easy and functioning.
Today it doesn't,  windows 8.1 finds the other PC and creating the network, even identifying the different folders on the other PC however as I want to open a file, then loading forever starts, but
on the other side the windows 7 PC is frozen, only the hard switch off helps. ...
Any idea what to do? The diagnose shows that the access was lost.

I formatted the hard drive and reinstall windows 8.1 pro 64bit again, and without installing any drivers and updates, windows wont shutdown and the same scenario happens again!!!
I disabled the fast start-up option in power option in system in control panel and the computer shutdown this time!!! but the computer takes so long to start windows until hard drive lamp went off.
is there a solution to this!!!!

    You may try the followings:
1,Boot in to Safe Mode and recheck the issue.
    2. You may try a Clean Boot.
    3. Look at the Event Viewer to find any clue related to this problem.
4.Enable Display highly detailed status messages.
To do this in the Start Search type in:  gpedit.msc  and hit the Enter Key.
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System. In the right pane locate
Display highly detailed status messages. If you enable this policy setting, the system displays status messages that reflect each step in the process of starting, shutting down, logging on, or logging off the system
    5. Enable The Shutdown Event Tracker  to consistently track the reason for system shutdowns
To do this in the Start Search type in:  gpedit.msc  and hit the Enter Key.
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System. In the right pane locate
Display Shutdown Event Tracker  and enable it.
You must update all the drivers.

You're sharing an SMB volume over the internet?
I don't mean to sound rude, but are you nuts?
I can't think of anyone, anywhere who would advocate this setup, especially since you're enabling guest access, too.
If you really, really, really, really, really need to do it, have you checked your port forwarding on your router? and have you checked with your ISP to see if they have a clue, and if they're actively blocking port 139. Hopefully they are, since that will force you to use a different protocol.
If you need to provide file access to remote users, consider enabling the VPN server built into Mac OS X Server and having the users connect over VPN. That way they appear as a local user, the data transfer is encrypted over the internet and you can control access to the resources.

  • Running Windows on MacBook Pro - running into problems

I installed Windows XP on my MacBook Pro (Late 2008 model) and everything seems to be running fine. I installed all of my drivers with no problem. Windows is installed on a 31GB partition.
I installed Windows for one reason and one reason only - to print W-2s at my job. There is a small program I need to install, and it comes on a disc that is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Whenever I go to install the program, I insert the disc into the drive and it just makes a noise like it is trying to load and then spits the disc back out.
I thought maybe it was just this program, but it's not - it does it with any disc I try to put in.
Is this a fixable problem? Can I even run PC discs on my Mac (with Windows)?
I'm pretty new to this whole thing so any insight would be appreciated!

Yes you can install Windows programs from a disk when you are booted into Windows.
31GB partition for Windows is very small. Maybe there is not enough space in the Windows partition for the programs you are trying to install. How much free space is there in the Windows partition and how large are the programs? Remember that Windows needs some free space just to run, just as OSx needs free HD space for it to run.
If you installed using Boot Camp Assistant, you should vist the Boot Camp forum where the Boot Camp gurus hang out. https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp

  • Re: Fingerprint Reader Not Working On Windows 8.1 Pro Startup

    Model: ThinkPad Edge E420
OS:       Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
Problem: Fingerprint reader suddenly stopped working (Image 1). One major change I think which might have lead to this - I had a recent update from Microsoft on 28/Aug/2014 (Image 2). I'm not sure though that this must be the cause of the problem.
Troubleshooting tried: I tried first to repair through "programs and features" but did not work. Then I tried to uninstall and reinstall the FingerPrint reader software (Latest version available on Lenovo Website for my model). Still did not work. I'm pasting photographs of the error. I've tried to follow all the methods shown on various threads on this forum but nothing worked so far....Even the TouchChip (Fingerprint) patch driver for Windows 7 (64-bit)  which is compatible with Windows 8.1 doens't install. (image 3). Device manager shows error for Biometric devices. (image 4).
    Please help.
    Image - 1

For Windows 8.1 you should not be installing any fingerprint software.  You should uninstall ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software.  The driver you need (for TouchStrip Fingerprint Sensor) will come from Windows Update.  Then you can enroll fingerprints from the PC Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in Options screen.
If there is a problem with the device in Device Manager, try removing it and check the option to delete the driver software.  Then reboot, run Windows Update, and a compatible version for your system should be installed.

  • Wifile pro - smb problem

I am trying to get WiFile Pro on a Palm TX to connect to a Macbook over wifi. The mac has to have windows smb sharing turned on and I have done that. Thanks - Michael
PS - I have used wifile pro before on previous macbook and pre 10.5

    Hi Michael,
I've been having the same trouble with my TX. What I can tell you is that it is clearly a Leopard problem, since I can successfully connect to a MacBook running Tiger - and everything worked fine (as it did in the past with my previous G4 iBook under Panther and Tiger).
Also, I did successfully get an ftp connection to my Leopard MacBook Pro via my Airport Express base station. I had all 3 file sharing options turned on and the firewall on 'Set access for specific services and applications'. However, I have not yet been able to get either ftp or wifi to work via a peer-to-peer connection ('Create network' under the Airport menu).
Similar problems plague my efforts to sync with Missing Sync via wifi. I may occasionally have managed to hit on the right combination of settings, but I can't recall them.
Hope this might help a little.
As for me, the iPhone is beginning to appear in my dreams!

  • Desperately need help with a networked printer and SMB sharing for windows

Complete xServ newbie here. I'm a windows/novell admin, with limited experience in Unix and Linux.
Against my advice, a client of mine that owns a small office of 20 people bought an XServG5 to act as a server for 20 mixed Windows PCs. File sharing services are working fine. I've created the users, set up groups and rights - that's all good.
I cannot get an SMB shared printer to work from the windows machines. They run through the network printer install just fine, it shows up online, etc. However, when print jobs are submitted they DO show up in the printer queue on the server, sit there for a while, and then get moved to the completed box.
They never print. There's not any indication that the job is even submitted to the printer. I can print to the printer just fine from the server itself, but the windows clients don't work, but they don't return an error message.
Print services are running on the server, I've configured the printer name to be less than 12 characters for the share, and indeed it does pop right up during the "add network printer" routine.
Ideas? I'm not even sure what questions I'm supposed to be asking, such is my ignorance of the OS. I do know that I followed the documentation to a T, and according to Apple this should work.
Thanks in advance for the help. I'm extremely frustrated.

We have the same problem. Our printer worked for about 2 years but failed similar to yours after a system update.
Can you go into the Windows service, Logs, Printer Service. Copy and paste the log here. What I am looking for is a line like lpr: CANNOTCONNECTCLIENT or something similar to this.
What I expect is that you have a problem where the cups defined printer is not usable. We can't get our problem fixed either - but am just curious if you have the same thing. We reloaded our server, applied all of the update and still cannot get it to work.
Again, I think it stems from the update.

  • After moving shared profiles to Windows 7/32 Pro PC, I can't access them from XP box mapped to the profile share (P:\Profiles...) after editing profiles.ini to point to the network share. I can edit files in the profile directory from XP.

Previous configuration: Shared profiles located at D:\profiles\ on PC1 (XP Pro SP3). 2nd PC (PC2 also XP Pro SP3) mapped to \\PC1\Profiles via mapped drive P: and using absolute reference in profiles.ini on PC2. Remote profiles work OK on PC2.
New PC added (PC7) to eventually replace PC1 (Windows 7/32 Pro). Profiles moved to D:\Profiles on that box. Firefox and Thunderbird work fine on PC7 with the local profiles. Profiles.ini edited on PC1 to point to the network share and will not access the remote profiles. Access permissions are set to full for everyone. I can write and edit to files in the profile directories from PC1.
I tried adding a profile with the profile manager and tried to force it to use the network share, but it still located the new profile down in the default directory ...\application data\Mozilla\Firefox\

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

  • Problems connecting to the internet after Upgrade from windows 8.1 pro

Cant connect to the internet after upgrading to windows 8.1 pro, what can i do to rectify this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can also try to install the older version in compatible mode:
Windows 8.1 Wifi showing "limited" or "No Internet Access"
Solution: revert your network adapter driver back to an older version
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dennis_schnell/archive/2013/08/31/windows-8-1-wifi-showing-quot-limitied-quot-or-quot-no-internet-access-quot.aspx
In addition, disable power management on your network driver:
    Open Network and Sharing Center.
Click the Change adapter settings link in the upper left of the navigation pane.
Right click the network connection you want to enable/disable power management support on and click Properties .
    Click Configure .
On the Power Management tab, clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.

There are a few other people have the same issues.  However there was no real solution provided although the post was marked as answered.  I am posting it here again and hopefully I can get some help to solve this issue.
We got two new PCs, one with windows 7 and the other with windows 8.1 Pro.  In the same network with domain, the windows 7 pc has no problem at all to join the domain.  However the windows 8.1 Pro won't join the domain. On the windows 8.1 Pro computer,
I can ping the other computers in the network.  The error message says:
An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain "cmi" could not be contacted. ...
In my case, the domain name is "CMI".  I am sure the DNS setting is correct.  What did I do wrong?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I tried the solution in that article.
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters folder, there is no
NeutralizeNT4Emulator.  So I followed the instructions and created one, and set the value to 1. Then I restarted the computer and tried to join the domain again.  I got the same error.  Below is more from the netsetup log file:

----------------below is the error message from the pop up window
Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The domain name "cmi" might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain "cmi":
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.cmi
The following domain controllers were identified by the query:
    cmi-dc2.cmi
    cmi-dc1.cmi
However no domain controllers could be contacted.
    Thanks.
