Windows 8.1 Pro will not boot after clean install!

Hello all recently went from a Win7pro to Win8.1pro I did a clean install and formatted my HDD just last night. Woke up this morning my machine was turned off I had let it stay on this night as I was installing updates for it. So i turned on the computer
and got nothing let it sit for about 30 min and still got nothing and but nothing im talking just a blank screen. I then did a "hard shutdown(just pressed power button till it turned off the computer)" When I tried to turn it back on again this time
i got the ASUS Sabertooth X58 splash screen to enter bios or load boot devices so was kinda excited. However if i try to enter this BIOS it sits on another screen (American Megatrends) just saying entering setup... Same goes for the Boot Devices page. So let
me back up for just a sec, After I did the clean install it worked fine for about a couple hours I had time to install AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy and then went  to bed and let it do updates. I run Win8.1Pro at school and work and have never had
this problem any suggestions?

let it sit for about 30 min and still got nothing
I then did a "hard shutdown(just pressed power button till it turned off the computer)"
That may not have been long enough.  But a "hard shutdown" would definitely have been construed as a problem due to the update.
Asus apparently is a known problem case...

  • Windows 8.1 Pro will not boot after installing iTunes 11.1.5.5

It's a little hard for me to accept that this is true, but the symptoms seem to be pointing the direction of the title of this thread.  I have an all-in-one touch-screen Gateway computer that came with windows 7 (yeah, a win7 machine that came with touch, yeesh) and I put windows 8.1 pro 64-bit on it with a clean install (actually windows 8 was the clean install and then I did the free microsoft store upgrade to 8.1).  It has 4GB of RAM and has a Pentium Dual Core cpu @ 2.2 Ghz.  It was running fine with the previous version of iTunes, but as soon as I updated to iTunes 11.1.5.5 (and there may have been other apple things that updated too (ie quicktime of course), the computer prompted me for a reboot and froze during the reboot process (before it even shut down).  Then it had trouble booting into windows.  I ran startup repair to no avail and decided to do a sytem restore.  My most recent restore point was from a few weeks back, before iTunes was even installed at all on the machine.  I went back to that point and the machine worked fine again.  Then I installed iTunes 11.1.5.5 and the same exact problem occurred - it froze while shutting down after the iTunes install and then would not boot into windows 8.  I did another system restore and have not put iTunes back on.  The system is working fine.  I'm going to try to find out if there's a way to download older versions of iTunes, so that I can install it, but the bigger issue here is: Is this a legitimate bug/incompatibility with some hardware or software or driver that I have on this computer?  I run a computer support business so I know my way around but I don't have time to troubleshoot this from scratch.  Anyone else seeing this?  Apple employees...a little help here?  Any input?

MacBook Pro will not boot after doing an Apple Software Update (of course they will not help you).  MONEY, MONEY, MONEY is the name of the game.  They can cause your computer to crash and still charge you!
Does anyone have an answer to why my computer is showing a little gear spinning for hours?  I have tried several things with NO luck.

  • Macbook Pro Will Not Boot After Full Timemachine Restore

Hope someone can help. I upgraded my HD and attempted to restore from time machine. Everything appears to have worked well and the restoration was a success according to what the computer says. However, when I go to reboot I hear the startup sound then the apple pops up on the screen followed by a kernal panic error and the black box telling me that I need to hold down the start button and restart. I've tried resetting the pram, reinstalling from TM again and a couple of other things but it won't start up. I tried doing a clean install and it worked fine then I migrated files from my TM backup and that worked fine as well. However, that's not what I'm looking for, I wanted to get the machine exactly the way it looked before the upgrade and I thought TM was supposed to do that. I've read other forums were people have done it with no problems and am completely stumped at why it is not working. If anyone can shed some light I'd appreciate it.

I booted with the CD and after selecting the language, went to the utilities pane and used the partition feature.
Last night in desperation, I booted back to the CD and once again told it to do a full restore from TM. This was the third time that I had done it so far. The previous two times I had gone into the partition feature and partitioned the drive first. This time I skipped that step and just told it to restore from TM. It said if it did this it would erase everything on the drive. I agreed and let it do its work. This morning it once again, as in both previous times, said it had restored from TM successfully. I told it to restart and lo and behold, it booted and everything is just as I had it on the other drive.
Needless to say, I'm confused but happy. I just wish I knew why it would not boot after restoring the previous two times? Maybe it just wanted me to spend more money:) I tried booting today only after I had gone to frys electronics and bought a SATA to USB cable and cloning software.
Anyway, thanks for your help and if anyone knows why it wouldn't boot, let me know. It would be good to know for the future just in case. For anyone else having this trouble, keep trying. Third time was a charm for me.

  • Macbook pro will not boot after snow leopard upgrade

My GF has had a macbook pro since mid 2008.  It's been running like a champ since I've known her for the past 3 years with  no issues.  It has/had OSX 10.5.8 installed.  We tried to consolidate all our pictures from all our apple devices and realized she didn't have an icloud on the old 10.5.8 OSX.  So I called apple and they told me to order and install the snow leopard OSX 10.6 first and then upgrade to lion etc after that,  Well we got the disk yesterday popped it in to install and it's been a disaster.... the computer shutdown for what looked like a normal restart during the installation process and never booted back up.  Attempts to manually reboot leave us locked on a grey apple logo screen with spinning gear indefinately whith the Snow Leopard disk installed during boot up.  With the disk removed I get the flashing file folder with a question mark.  I called apple support we tried all the PRAM and SMC resets and then decided that we should go  to the Genius Bar once all those failed.  After an hour and a half drive to the nearest genius bar we were told that the we suddenly had a hardware issue which just happened to coincide with the new OS installation....  I'm not buying it and am looking for some help.  The macbook was running like a champ until we inserted a disk recommended by apple...   Any takers?

You have a five year old computer, so a failing hard drive at this point is not so strange. You have a couple of options you can try. Start with this one, but if it does not work you will have to erase the hard drive. I hope you have a backup of all your files.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot after switching graphics cards

    Dear All,
I have a late-2008 unibody MacBook Pro. I have had it since April 2009, and I have not encountered any real problems with it.
Yesterday, I switched to the 9600 graphics card for the first time since purchasing the machine. It logged me out as expected, but then proceeded to flash a blank blue screen at me for 20 minutes. Assuming that this was not normal, I powered down the computer by holding the power button. I powered it on again, and it will not get past the Apple symbol screen with the loading whirligig. I left it on for seven hours (overnight), and no change.
I booted it from the install disc and ran the Disk Utility verify and repair. It either gives me no problem or a block count error, which goes away when I run repair. I tried running verify on permissions, but this gives me a "failed to exit" or some such error, same with repair permissions. Restarting gives me the same apple logo screen until forever.
I've tried resetting PRAM, doing the battery removal and holding power button for 5 seconds, I've tried booting in safe mode (it won't), and doing an archive and install (which it can't do either, as it can't access my HDD or something). I've run the disk utility verify and repair several times.
I unfortunately don't have a recent backup (slapping myself), so I'm open to suggestions before going into despair over my $2600 paperweight before doing an erase and install...
    Thanks in advance!
PS: is there a way to open the computer in target disk mode via the install cd so that I CAN back it up?
    Message was edited by: Kaklz

Thanks, Joe. That may be an option if all else fails. I don't currently own an enclosure, so I am looking for an alternative before spending any money (I know, "frugal Apple user" is unheard of, but...).
I do have an old G3 tower, which I am using in the meantime, so if I can use this to open my MBP in target disk mode (or some other way of making a backup), I'd be overjoyed!

  • Macbook Pro will not boot after full time machine restore

I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro, current model with the i7 processor, which I purchased in August 2010. Last week, when I tried to turn it on, it would not boot (just got to the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel). I took it in for repair and was told that it had a bad hard drive. The hard drive was replaced and I got the computer back yesterday.
Everything looked good, it turned on, so I did a complete restore from my Time Machine backup on my Time Capsule, following the instructions on this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15638.html
The restore was successful and the computer prompted me to restart. I clicked the button to allow the restart and now I am back to the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. It won't boot again.
I also looked at this discussion (http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10924233) and it sounds like the person here was able to get his computer to work after doing the Time Machine restore in the same process I used, so I don't know what else to do.
I don't live near an Apple store, so it would be great if I could figure this out myself. Thanks for any help!

  • Compaq Presario CQ57 - Will not boot after ram install

I was upgrading the ram on my father's old compaq, and was going along fine. I got the ram in, closed it all up, and went to boot it.
I was greeted with a black screen, a blinking caps lock light, a blinking power button light and the orange wifi light. I've made sure it has no static multiple times, and have tried slowly reintroducing power sources. I have cleaned the ram and the input, swapped out ram cards, everything anf nothing seems to work. When I turn it on I hear the CPU fan, and a single beep, then silence after a few more seconds.

  • Time machine will not restore after clean install of OSX -10.5

Apple replaced a logic card in my PowerBook G4 which was running Leopard and returned it to me with a clean install of Tiger, b/c that was the original OS when I purchased the laptop. I re-installed Leopard from my OSX Leopard disc and also re-loaded MS Office from a disc. When I tried to restore the backup from TimeMachine, which is on a separate hard disk, the restore option was grayed out. How do I get the backup from Time Machine?

Were you booted from the Install disc, and using the +Restore System From Backup+ option from the Utilities menu? If not, that's what you need to do. Well the people at Apple have no way of knowing if you have a marginal hard drive, or something installed that would interfere with the update from a third party.    Problems can arise especially from tools such as system cache cleaners, anti-virus, firewall, and other software that operates in the background.
http://www.roaringapps.com/ should help you know what is compatible if you are running 10.7 or later.
In the future ignore push notifications, and turn them off via the Apple menu -> System preferences, Software Update, and the App Store preferences.

  • Help Please! Macbook will not boot after MacOffice install

I've never used a mac before until now. I've a 2.2ghz, 2gb ram macbook(late '07, it has an *hitachi HD* which I've had for less than a week and was running fine until I installed mac office 2004 student edition.
During the installation process i was prompted to update macoffice and after a while i couldnt see the microsoft update status bar and i just got to the screen where it said installation complete, I clicked 'finish'and then I waited for 30mins or more where i got a spinning colour wheel, and the fans were spinning a lot and it felt quite warm so I decided to turn it off.
When I booted up again I got a *flashing folder with a question mark* on the white/greyish screen. After resetting the P/VRAM(?) a number of times I eventually got into the desktop. Thinking that microsoft must have corrupted some system files. I decided to do an erase and install but when i tried to do it I got a warning screen with 'install failed'and 'the installer is experiencing errors installing on "macintosh HD" The disk may be damaged. Please try installing on another disk...click restart and try again'.
I then tried to use 'disk utility'using the os x disc. I ran first aid on the macintosh HD. I verified and repaired disk permissions but when i tried running verify/repair disk i get in red 'Invalid b-tree node size, volume check failed..Error:filesystem verify or repair failed.'
The lines for apple care are shut today as well..any light shed on this problem appreciated. Any ideas what i can do...I really hope it isnt hardware failure..but the hard shutdown/restart suggest it may be?

The question mark means that important system files needed for startup are either missing or damaged. The only solution is to boot from your Installer DVD and perform an Archive and Install or an Erase and Install.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Windows will not update after clean install

ok, I hope this isn't a common topic, I have searched everywhere for a solution. My laptop was slow, maybe infected with malware. I refreshed it and it wouldn't allow me to update and reinstall 8.1. So, I reset it. Still no updates. I got my hands on a windows 8 disk, formatted the drive and reinstalled windows. I still can't update, I have tried update troubleshooter and microsoft fix it. Neither worked, the updater searches and then says sometimes even update needs an update. So i've tried that. it happens often and it wont complete the updater update, even after troubleshooter claims it has fixed any errors. I  got one error message earlier in week which I can't rememer. I searched out all the info and fixes on it and got nowhere. I gave up on fixing update and tried all the other installers I could find. The only one I could get to work was WSUS. I downloaded all the updates and installed them, in configuration there was an error and it removed all updates. I am losing my mind, this should be simple and has been going on for two weeks. Please help!
