Windows 8.1 recovery fails

I have a 17T-J100 laptop when I ran an image restore it wiped out the recovery drive. When I try to do a system recovery using the HP Recovery disk it loads all the disk, trys to load the software a couple of times, then get an error message.
"Recovery Attempt has failed. Select one of the following buttons. Save log, Details, Retry. "
Details gives the following
ChkErr.cmd: Detected some error during PININST_BBV
ChkErr.cmd: Check C; system.save\logs\Burn Boot Warn.log
ChkErr.cmd: or, check:\ system.save\logs\BurnBootMerge.log
If I turn it off and back on goes to this window.
A retry get same thing. It  loads all the disk, reboots even get a welcome administrater screen momentarily  before it reboots and say is installing software.  Does that a couple times before get the recovery failed screen.
The repair option on my recovery boot USB drive says can not repair, reload the recovery media.
I tried skipping the media disk as had that option . Said preparation was 100% complete and went through rebooting etc  Welcome administrator screen  then rebooted and tried again to install the software and ended up again at the Recovery failed screen.

We are seeing this error on a lot of posts. I will give you 2 solutions that have worked for others.
Enter BIOS, reset to Default settings-then change date in BIOS to 1/01/2012. Save & Exit. Boot from Recovery, allow it to finish- but on the first reboot enter BIOS again to be sure date is still 2012. Exit and allow Recovery to finish. Hopefully.
Another solution that has worked for several others is to remove the mSATA cache drive if your model has one. Run Recovery, allow it to finish..hopefully. At least one poster said he got all Windows Updates done also before shutting down to reinstall the mSATA.

Set the date in BIOS to 1/02/2012. Save & Exit. Boot with Recovery, let it run through the process- but on the first reboot initiated by recovery enter BIOS again to insure date is still set to 2012. If not change it again, then let recovery resume.

Hello sir! I have a problem since i bought my lap HP Pavilion 15 n-209TX before a month ago. Atfirst, I had a recovery problem and i ordered the recovery dvds from the hp contact. Well, at my first acknowledgement, they sent me wrong set of dvds with Windows 8 ( I am in need of Windows 8.1). Then I clarified it with the HP customer service and again they sent me the original set of dvd's. Now, I have a problem that while the recovery process, the second disc is not booting. I checked it through my desktop's drive it was the correct opt dvd and not booting. This is my new lap which i hadn't used it ever since my purchase. • Product Recovery Failed...? (Windows 7)

I am trying to format my laptop back to how it came from the factory (I got a nasty virus), but the boot manager wont run the cbd_drive that I made some months ago to do system restore...  and when I try to do the Full Product Recovery, after selecting "I agree to these terms and conditions" and clicking "Next" I get a window that says "Recovery Failed"
    What do I do?

    Hi again, Nimvoker
Are you receiving an error message when you try to recover the system at POST? Also, if you haven't already, you may wish to try a System Restore from inside Windows. This will reset your system back to the way it was at a given time. By default, Windows creates a restore point every time Windows updates are downloaded and installed. This may help you get further along in your recovery. To do a System Restore, simply enter System Restore in the search box of the Start menu and open it. This will guide you through the process.
One thing you can also try is to create a System Repair disc in Windows, as shown here. The instructions are mainly for a DVD, but I think it should be possible to create one on a USB flash drive.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • GT70 0ND-204US Windows 7 removed and recovery fails due to drive reformat

    Model Number:GT70 0ND-204US
    Hello,
I was attempting to install Unbuntu from a LiveCD to an external hard drive and I believe during that process I accidentally reformatted the SSD to be an ext4 partition and swap space.  When I rebooted to try to get into windows I got an error that said, "Bootmgr is missing" and when I tried to enter recovery mode I got as far as seeing a Windows 7 like user interface but then I was shown the error (paraphrasing here), "The installation drive must be named OS_install please try again."
I'm typing this using the LiveCD on the undermentioned  computer and can use any tools available in Unbuntu if further diagnostic information is needed.
    Cheers!
Also I would like to thank anyone in advance for their help and even if you're just reading this I appreciate the time you have given.

  • Hp pavilion dv6 recovery fails

hey everyone first post on the forum
i have an hp pavilion dv6 that came with 64 bit windows 7 home premium installed. i tried to dual boot Ubuntu with it and ended up overwriting windows. lots more story but i ended up calling hp and ordering recovery discs for my laptop. i then zeroed my hard drive and ran the 3 recovery discs. it prompted my supplemental disc which I inserted. all went well until the "setting up for first use"screen appeared. hp software began installing stuff the during the drivers part it comes up with recovery failed. i ran without the supplemental disc and it did the same thing. someone please help

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 character Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around.
Create a retail installation disc yourself - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the exact same as the version you currently have )  from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • Pavilion dv6-6c recovery fails well into the process

The computer was reporting smart errors and would no longer boot.  I pulled the hard drive and checked it with the hitachi software wich reported the drive was failing wiht an unspecified error.  I purchased a replacement hitachi 750G travelstart drive like the one pulled from the laptop and ordered a recovery disk set from HP.
The computer is a Paviliion dv6-6c35dx Entertainment PC
The provided recover disk set is 67890-002 System Recovery DVD Windows 7 Recovery Media for Windows 7 Products Service Pack 1.
The recovery fails after about an hour after the final disk finished copying files.
The error message allows me to select Details which are:
    [15:31:01.90] ChkErrBB.CMD : Detect some error during PININST_BBV
    [15:31:01.90] ChkErrBB.CMD : Check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootWarn.log
    [15:31:01.90] ChkErrBB.CMD : or, check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootMerge.log
These errors are in a file name CTOERROR.flg which opened in notepad when I selected details.
Using Notepad to navigate to the suggested locations I find that there is no \logs subdirectory under system.sav.
Was I given the wrong set of recovery disks?
I checked the hard drive and both the new and old are hitachi part number  HDD: 5K750-640
Please help, I would really like to get this year old machine recovered.

  • Windows 7 Backup is Failing with error 0x81000101

    Hello,
My windows 7 backup is failing with the following message "Error Code: 0x81000101". I searched the internet but didn't find any good solution.
Can you please tell me what should I do?

If none of the above worked read this next
Did your computer come with a Recovery Partition on the drive? (Check the computers documentation)
If it did, you cannot have any backup software or System Restore set to backup or monitor that drive.
    Go to Control Panel.
Click on Classic View in the Task Pane.
    Double click System.
Select Advanced System Settings in the Tasks Pane.
    Click the System Protection Tab.
In the Available Disks section, make sure that the backup partition is not selected. If it is, remove the check mark.
After this is done or if this does not work, go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on Disk Cleanup.
In the Options dialog, select 'Files from all users on this computer'. Click the C: system drive. When the scan is completed, click the 'More Options' Tab. In the 'System Restore and Shadow Copies' section, click the 'Cleanup' button. In the 'Are you sure......' popup, click Delete. Click OK.
Wait for the Disk Cleanup to complete.
Now, go back into Disk Cleanup and follow the same procedure for any other drives that appear in the drop down menu where you selected the C: drive the first time.
Exit everything and reboot the computer.
After the computer reboots, check System Restore again. If System Restore is still not working, go back into System Protection and turn off System Restore for all drives and reboot the computer again. This will delete all restore points on all drives.
After the reboot, go back and enable System Restore for the C: volume only. Create a new restore point for that drive.
    Let me know the results.

  • System recovery from partition recovery fails

    hi there,
I tried doing a system recovery on my HP Pavilion from the reovery partition. I tried the "System Recovery" option.
The preparation process wnt fine, but the actual recovery failed with a pretty meaningless message:
The recovery attempt has failed. Please select one of the following buttons.
    - Details
    - Retry
I checked out the log file but found no useful info. The process did crate a log file, HP_RM_LOG.SRD, a binary file that should be of help to HP Support when trubleshooting the issue.
I tried this a number of times with the same outcome. I also tried the "Factory Reset" option with the same result. Unfortuntely I did not create the recovery media before attempting the system recovery from the recovery partition (my bad).
Any ideas how to move forward?
    Thanks,
    Nacho.

    Hi there @Nacho74
Welcome to the Hp Support Forums!
I understand that you are trying to do a system restore, and getting an error during the process. Also from the information you gave it looks like you installed OS X 10.6.  When you installed that did you leave the recovery partition intact?
Which operating system was original installed on the notebook? Normally that notebook was installed with either windows 8 or 8.1 from the factory, and if the recovery partition is intact it would only be able to recover to whichever of those was installed to begin with.

    chkdsk D: /r /f
means hard drive is ok, but recovery still fail to start and asks to run recovery from windows CD (I dont have one, and I dont want to loose my windows license)
how to either fix recovery or keyboard/mousse
I fixed more than 500 pc in my life, I cant fix mine now

Hello zgued.  I understand you're having some trouble with your keyboard and mouse.
If you were to reboot your computer and access the BIOS using the F10 button does the keyboard work there?
Which dv6 do you own?  Identifying the notebook by the product number is the most helpful.  This document can show you where it is located.
Have you ever taken the notebook apart?  The symptoms you describe would fit with a damaged or loosened cable inside the notebook.
I feel that I should first help you troubleshoot the recovery issue.  I say this because performing the recovery will rule out software issues with a 99% certainty.  So, what was the problem you faced during a recovery?  Do you get any errors?
I'll keep an eye out for your response.  Have a great day!

Here is a link on somethings that might cause it to fail. Have you tested the Hardware on the Notebook? This is another document on recovery issues. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. If those do not help take a look at how to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, this could cause it not to go through. I hope this helps you, please let me know. Thanks.
