Windows 8.1 RTM, Windows Temp Filling up with MSI*.LOG files
I have a machine that seems to be filling up its C: drive by placing a large number of 3MB .LOG files all of the form MSI*.LOG in the C:\Windows\Temp directory. I've tried researching and the closest was kb 223300, however this machine does not
appear to have the registry setting referenced in that article. The Hotfix also says its not valid for this OS (Windows 8.1). Never seen this before. Can someone help? I've completely turned off Windows Update on this machine and so far that seems to be working.
Also, I couldn't figure out for a while why where the disk space was going. Nothing was reporting anywhere close to the full disk utilization. I had to use ROBOCOPY /MIR /L to essentially get a full view of what's on the drive.
I'm getting the same problem too, with 3MB MSI*.LOG files filling up c:\windows\temp. It puts so many on, that it completely fills C: drive. It does it randomly, sometimes going for weeks without problem, sometimes doing it every couple of days, but has
done so since the OS was reinstalled from scratch on an SSD several months ago.
It has been doing it pretty much since I did a complete fresh reinstall. I don't get the problem on any of my other machines, only this one - but this is my only 64 bit machine, so that may have something to do with it.
I first discovered the problem basically while I was installing the basics for the first time. I did a clean OS install, ran the updates, installed Office, and then when I was installing Visual Studio, it failed with an out of disc space error. That's
when I discovered the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP was full of log files.
Unfortunately I've just deleted them again, so can't upload one. But last time I had a look in one, there was something that pointed to Visual Studio possibly being the culprit but I can't remember what it was. I uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio,
and thought it had fixed it, as it went for a couple of months without the problem, but has done it three times in the last week.
The files are about 3MB each - I'm new on the forums, so what would be the best way of uploading one so that someone might be able to have a look at it?

Server filling up with hidden .indexed file
My Xserve has 3 80GB drives. When it was set up originally, I took two of the drives and mirrored them and had the third drive as a stand alone drive. I wanted to remove the mirror, so I started up in target disk mode and used a piece of software to copy the contents of the mirror to the third 80GB drive.
That all seemed to work just fine, but now the startup drive keeps filling up completely with a file called .indexed that is located in the Library/Preferences folder. If I delete it, everything works fine for a while, but it just happened again in about a week.
Does anyone know why this would be happening, what that file is and how I might go about fixing the problem? Does anyone think that my method for removing my mirror caused this issue?

Windows vista and problem with association .swf files
I have win vista 32bit. Downloaded and install adobe flash player from adobe site. I have some file with .swf extension but can not get to work with adobe flash player 10.1r52. Ii can asociated ths type of file with adobe flash player. Where is the adobe flash player after installation_in which folder? Confused. Help.
Hi, The Flash files are at C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
Also, if you used IE to Install Flash Player, then in Tools, Manage add ons you also need the Shockwave Flash Object,
the ActiveX Control and it must be Enabled. This is Installed when Flash Player is Installed.
If you are using Firefox or another non-IE browser, then in the plugins, there will be a SWF (version number of Flash Player) and it must be Enabled.
Hope this helps,

whenever i decide to shut down firefox, i click on the x in the first tab and it will not shutdown the program. i must go to task manager to close the program. i get an error report that says there was a problem with add-on container.exe. i have looked in my add-on list and i see no container.exe there. where is it coming from and how do i get rid of this problem. i have even tried to shutdown the program with the x in the upper right corner and it does the same thing. i have recently updated firefox and it still does the same thing.
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause

Could I change the default temp folder(C:\Windows\Temp)?

Hi All:
My web server is IIS 6. Sometimes the temp crystal report objects could not dispose when I close IE. I have some codes to control the evnet(colse IE to dispose CR objects) but the result is not good. Could I change the default temp folder(C:\Windows\Temp)? Because I want to delete the temp files by schedule. If the temp folder in C:\Windows\Temp, there maybe have anohter .tmp files in this folder and I want to avoid to delete them. Thank you very much.Post Author: h1i9k7o2

Thank you very much. But this is not my solution. I prefer to set the temp folder by a method or attribute to set the physical path, or to change the register. On the other way, Can I set the Environment Variables like %BOE_TEMP% for the default temp folder. Because there maybe some other systems also used the same environment variables(%TEMP%). When I delete the temp file in %BOE_TEMP% folder, I will never to delete temp files of the other systems. Could I? -
System.log files filling up in 10.6?
Something is filling up my system log files, to the point that console.app will only show the last half hour of each file. It looks like something is trying to escape its sandbox, but I'm not exactly sure what... I'm getting MANY repeated messages that look like:
Feb 3 00:29:57 Brians-mini sandboxd[16]: syslogd(15) deny file-read-data /private/var/log/asl/StoreData
Feb 3 00:29:57 Brians-mini sandboxd[16]: syslogd(15) deny mach-task-name
Feb 3 00:29:59: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Feb 3 00:29:57 Brians-mini sandboxd[16]: * process 16 exceeded 500 log message per second limit - remaining messages this second discarded *
Feb 3 00:29:57 Brians-mini sandboxd[16]: syslogd(15) deny mach-task-name
has anyone seen this? (And does this belong in a different forum?)It sounds like someone may be trying to connect to your computer. When things are repeatedly denied, especially task-opening commands, it is usually suspected that something is trying to get in. This may be malicious, or may not be, depending on how you connect to the Internet. If you share a connection at home or even between residencies (check with your ISP if you're not sure), it can be normal. See if it still happens after you physically disconnect the network. Also, make sure to disconnect peripherals just to make sure they aren't causing any of the issues.

Windows\Temp folder filling fast - how to Dispose the Crystal Objects?
Post Author: pontupo
CA Forum: .NET
So the Windows\Temp folder is fast filling the disk in my
deployment. Each time a report is opened, a number of files are created
here. The problem is, of course, probably that I'm not releasing my
report objects in my code, as the reports can't even be manually
deleted without shutting down IIS. Well, fair enough. What I can't
figure out is where to release my reports objects. I have two pages:
one performs a pre-pass of the report object and generates a dynamic
page to prompt the user for parameters. This page, I believe, has no
problems because the report.Close() command is in line with the code
and is the final statement, but I could be mistaken and this page may also be leaving memory leaks. The second page, however, has the
CrystalReportsViewer object and actually displays the report to the
user after setting up the parameters correctly. On this page, I can't
figure out how/when to call report.Close(). If I do it at the
page.Dispose event, there seems to be no affect. If I do it at the
page.Close event, the report will load fine, but if you try to go to
another page in the report (in the case of multi-page reports) or
refresh the data, the report object has already been unloaded and the
CrystalReportsViewer won't be able to find the report document. If I
wrap my code in one big Try-Catch-Finally (rather than just having a
Try-Catch around the file load itself) as I've seen suggested elsewhere and place a report.Close()
command in the Finally, the Finally is executed before the viewer even
loads the report so I get a file not found error. So where
can I unload the report object? What I want is to persist the report
via Sessions (which I do) so that as the user moves between pages of
the report/refreshes the report will remain loaded, but when the user
closes the page or browses to another page, perhaps, I want to close
the report and free the resources so that the temp files are deleted.
Following are some code samples: Protected Sub Page_Init(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Init sessionString = Request.QueryString("report") report = Server.MapPath("reports/") & Request.QueryString("report") & ".rpt" ConfigureCrystalReport() End SubPrivate Sub ConfigureCrystalReport() If (Session(sessionString) Is Nothing) Then reportDoc = New ReportDocument() 'load the report document If (IsReportValid()) Then reportDoc.Load(report) '****************************** 'bunch of other code, authentication 'parameter handling, etc. here '****************************** Session(sessionString) = reportDoc Else Response.Redirect("error.aspx") End If Else reportDoc = CType(Session(sessionString), ReportDocument) End If CrystalReportsViewer.ReportSource = reportDoc End Sub Private Function IsReportValid() As Boolean Dim reportIsValid As Boolean = False Try If (System.IO.File.Exists(report)) Then 'does the file exist? 'if it does, try to load it to confirm it's a valid crystal report Dim tryReportLoad As New CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument() tryReportLoad.Load(report) tryReportLoad.Close() tryReportLoad.Dispose() reportIsValid = True End If Catch ex As Exception reportIsValid = False End Try Return reportIsValid End Function'Currently, I've also tried each of the following:Protected Sub Page_Unload(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Unload CloseReports(reportDoc) CrystalReportsViewer.Dispose() CrystalReportsViewer = Nothing End Sub Private Sub CloseReports(ByVal report As ReportDocument) Dim sections As Sections = report.ReportDefinition.Sections For Each section As Section In sections Dim reportObjects As ReportObjects = section.ReportObjects For Each reportObject As ReportObject In reportObjects If (reportObject.Kind = ReportObjectKind.SubreportObject) Then Dim subreportObject As SubreportObject = CType(reportObject, SubreportObject) Dim subReportDoc As ReportDocument = subreportObject.OpenSubreport(subreportObject.SubreportName) subReportDoc.Close() End If Next Next report.Close() End Sub'This was the solution suggested on another forum. I've also tried:Protected Sub Page_Disposed(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Disposed reportDoc.Close() reportDoc.Dispose() CType(Session(sessionString), ReportDocument).Close() Session(sessionString) = Nothing End Sub'I've also tried wrapping everything inside of the If statement in the ConfigureCrystalReport() method in code to this effect:If (IsReportValid()) Then Try reportDoc.Load(report)Catch e As Exception Response.Redirect("error.aspx") Finally reportDoc.Close() End TryAny advice on this is appreciated. Thanks in advance, PontPost Author: sarasew13

Why are you checking for is valid before closing? As long as the report object isn't null you should be able to close it (whether it's open or not). I ran into this same problem when trying to store the report, so now I just store the dataset. Everything seems to work fine and navigate appropriately so here's more or less how I handle it:
DataSet myDS;ReportDocument myRPT;
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { if (!IsPostBack) { //pull variables from previous page if available //set variables into view state so they'll persist in post backs } else { //if postback then pull from view state }
createReport(); } catch (Exception err) { //handle error } }
private void createReport() { myDS = new DataSet(); string rpt;
rpt = "RPTS/report.rpt"; try { if (!IsPostBack || Session["data"] == null) { myDS = getData();//make data call here Session["data"] = myDS; } else { myDS = (DataSet)Session["data"]; }
if (myDS.Tables.Count > 0)//make sure the dataset isn't empty { myRPT = new ReportDocument(); myRPT.Load(Server.MapPath(rpt)); myRPT.SetDataSource(myDS.Tables[0]);
if (!IsPostBack) { //code to set parameters for report here }
MyViewer.ReportSource = myRPT; } } catch (Exception error) { //handle error } }
protected void Page_Unload(object Sender, EventArgs e) { try { if (myRPT != null) { myRPT.Close(); } } catch (Exception error) { //handle error } } -
Temporary files piling up in \Windows\Temp

Our ForeFront server piles up temporary files in C:\Windows\Temp, until the drive fills up! I deleted them manually, but after few weeks, it happened again...
Any suggestions on how to make this stop?

Let ff auto delete file from c:windows\temp after download?
Say you download a rar file. firefox builds the file first in C:\windows\temp as it download to completion. Then FF COPIES this file to the destination folder which could be on another drive. BUT FF never deletes this temp-file in c:windows\temp after copying. And you can NOT delete this file temp-file until you close FF. Deleting browser history temp files using ctrl-shift-del does not work.
Why is this?
Say I download many rar files at once. After each file completes firefox cCOPIES them to the destintaion directory. Again they go to another drive. BUT FF never deletes the temp-files form c:\windows\temp after completion of download and copying to the destintaion folder. UNLESS you close firefox.
Meanwhile this can clog up my small SSD drive which is only 20GiB
Need workaround please?OK you developers are such autistic a**holes. I just tried to manually delete the temp files FF makes when downloading files from c:\windows\temp. This did not free up space there's still the same amount of space left (163MB) on my SSD as before deleting the tempfiles form this dir. WTF is this?

Access denied. Error in File C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\
I have searched on Google and all over this forum and none of the solutions have fixed my problem.
Crystal Version: Crsytal.Net for Visual Studio.Net 2005
Server: Windows Server 2003
Error:
Access denied. Error in File C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\JuryDutyReport {D6296178-3E72-483E-B876-2DFC03D00841}.rpt: Access to report file denied. Another program may be using it.
When I run my app locally through the Web Server that comes with ASP.Net, everything is fine, it is only when I deploy the application to the Windows 2003 Server that I get the error.
I'm using impersonation in my ASP.Net application. I have given that domain user full access to 'C:\Windows\Temp'', the export folder and even the folder where the Crystal Report resides on the Server. When I run the application on the Web Server, I actually see the ".rpt" get created in the "C:\Windows\Temp" folder but yet it still says there is a permissions error.
What is bizarre is that the code below that just sends the file to the printer automatically works:
private void PrintJuryDutyReport(DataSet ds)
//create report document
ReportDocument crDoc = new ReportDocument();
//load, set datasource and print options
crDoc.Load(Server.MapPath("~/Reports/JuryDutyReport.rpt"));
crDoc.SetDataSource(ds); //set datasource
crDoc.PrintOptions.PrinterName = ddlPrinters.SelectedValue.ToString(); //set printername
crDoc.PrintOptions.PaperOrientation = PaperOrientation.Portrait; //set paper orientation
crDoc.SetParameterValue("ParamUsername", User.Identity.Name); //set parameter
crDoc.PrintToPrinter(1, false, 0, 0); //send to printer
I have to change the code to export to a PDF and this code doesn't work:
private void PrintJuryDutyReport(DataSet ds)
//report document
ReportDocument crDoc = new ReportDocument();
string myfile = @"G:\COPFS\COPFSPROD\ReportsTemp\MyPDF.pdf";
//load, set datasource and print options
crDoc.Load(Server.MapPath("~/Reports/JuryDutyReport.rpt"));
crDoc.SetDataSource(ds); //set datasource
crDoc.SetParameterValue("ParamUsername", User.Identity.Name); //set parameter
//export through http
crDoc.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, myfile);
crDoc.Close();
crDoc.Dispose();
Response.ClearContent();
Response.ClearHeaders();
Response.ContentType = "Application/pdf";
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + myfile);
Response.WriteFile(myfile);
Response.Flush();
Response.Close();
Any help is greatly appreciated as I have to present this to end users tomorrow.Don, thanks for the response.
As a last ditch effort, I granted "modify" to the Network Service Account on C:\Windows\Temp and that fixed the error.
There are two things that are troubling about this:
1) I'm impersonating a domain user in my ASP.Net application and when the PDF is created, the owner is that domain user, so I know impersonation is working. So I wonder if ASP.Net picks and chooses what account it runs under at different times?
2) It is a little scary for the Network Service Account to have this access but that people seem to be fine with it.

I have LR 4 and now I cannot open the software because I get this warning: "light room cannot start because it cannot create files in the temp file location. C:\windows\temp\". I think I need to have LR open in a different place but I have no idea how to do that. Any help is most appreciated.
AlexJim
Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I am not that tech oriented and
cannot easily find that folder. I did notice when I was booting up the LR software
that I could accept the site where LR usually is set up or choose a place. I am
thinking that the standard location for LR software is corrupted and that if I
chose a different place it would work. I say this because whether I use my
original disc or download from adobe I get the same warning. I have 100GB of
memory on the hard drive and I have cleaned the computer with Mcaffee and free
software. What should I do next? I can't use this software and I doubt LR 5
would open up with my current problem.

Enlarging a Window To Fill The Entire Screen
This article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61474 says that Option + click on zoom button should enlarge a window to fill the screen. It doesn't. It enlarges in a way that is somehow proportional to the content but it won't fill the screen.
Does anyone know a way to expand a window to fill the entire screen?Yeah. Isn't it though?
If you're interested in the prescribed behavior here is the link to the Human Interface Guidelins for OS X:

Redirection of deployment.user.cachedir to Windows Temp-directory
Hello,
I have a problem with the configuration of the cache-directory on a Windows Terminal-Server.
On a Windows Terminal-Server each registered user gets a Windows temp-directory, which can be seen in variable %TEMP% and looks like "D:\temp\1" or "D:\temp\2" and so on.
Now I want to redirect the cache-directory, set in file deployment.properties, property deployment.user.cachedir, to that temp-directory for the user.
How can I configure JavaWS correctly ?
Please help !! Thanks in advance
AchimThank you for your response. I am using jdk1.3.1 and
jre 1.4.2_01 which I just downloaded the other day.
The properties did indeed list out in the console, but
I will check a previous jre to see if they are there
as well. I agree that if the property is available,
then it should return the value.5. What system properties can be read by applets, and how?
In both Java-enabled browsers and the appletviewer, applets can read these system properties by invoking System.getProperty(String key):
key meaning
java.version Java version number
java.vendor Java vendor-specific string
java.vendor.url Java vendor URL
java.class.version Java class version number
os.name Operating system name
os.arch Operating system architecture
os.version Operating system version
file.separator File separator (eg, "/")
path.separator Path separator (eg, ":")
line.separator Line separator
Applets are prevented from reading these system properties:
key meaning
java.home Java installation directory
java.class.path Java classpath
user.name User account name
user.home User home directory
user.dir User's current working directory
To read a system property from within an applet, simply invoke System.getProperty(key) on the property you are interested in.
