Windows 8.1 safe mode password doesn't work

Using HP Pavilion 23 all in one model 23-b037c, 2012 windows 8.1.
During testing for internet connectivity was instructed to initiate msconfig and reboot in Safe Mode.
After rebooting the sign in security screen asked for my password.  I entered my password that has worked for long time., but system said password incorrect reenter.  tried numerous other passwords non accepted.  changed MS account PW no good. Worked with HP support several hours for 2 days, trying all advanced trouble shooting solutions they recommended. Ran restore, backup and recovery  etc. all failed.  After one backup attempt error message said must get out of SAFE Mode.
How do you do this without correct password?
Ran Hard disk test  passed OK. Now having to clean and remove all programs and personal files per HP Tech.. Will take several hours per HP sTech.  Then  will try again to run System recovery to original manufactures settings.  Huge mess.
Big problem. Hope this works.
Q. Anyone ever have this problem?
How do you bypass password security screen to access Windows 8.1 without going through this extensive process? tried several password recovery options non worked.
Tried all Advanced troubleshooting options offered by HP Tech.
Preplexed and need help. Thanks

Hello @ea2,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how the Windows 8.1 safe mode password does not work on your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To disable the built-in administrator account for Windows 8.1, I recommend following the steps in this document on How to Enable or Disable Built-in Elevated "Administrator" Account Windows 8 and 8.1. This should help to enter your password when booting into Safe Mode.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Windows Stuck in Safe Mode - mouse won't work - need my data...

New Mac User, well two months of trying to get it to opperate correctly. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> \system32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.
I've gone through a bunch of posts, tried a number of the instructions, and now have a worse issue, my computer is now stuck in safe mode with Windows, by instructions, here, I'd disabled everything for start up in Configuration Utility and checked start up in safe mode there too, so now I can't get it out of it, and since my mouse and keyboard won't opperate in safe mode, I get to the log in page to select user but the mouse just won't move and pressing "CTRL ALTDLT" no response.
In the Recovery Counsole when I rean CHKDSK /r this is what it came back with...
"The volume appears to contain or or more unrecoverable problems."
    97638572 kilobytes total disk space.
    90877508 kilobytes are available.
406 bytes in each allocation unit.
24409643 total allocation units on disk.
22719377 allocation units available on disk.
So what does that mean? Not sure what the " volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" means when it's not telling me what they could possibly be. Thoughts anyone?
If anyone knows or has some good advice on how to get windows back up and running correctly, and without wiping out my data - as I can't get it backed up, I would be tremendously grateful...
2 months of this is really enough, dying to use my system, and praying that I can...
    Thanks so much,

    Here's what worked: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
I followed the instructions above and once I finished, After re-booting, I selected Microsoft Windows XP Professional and the System Configuration Utility came up.
On the “General” tab, it shows that the Start Up Selection is on “Selective Startup” with everything checked, but what’s marked “Using Modified BOOT.INI
Tried to change it to “Normal Startup – load all device drivers and services” then re-start.
Windows came back up, but so did the System Configuration Utility and still showing that it was starting up with “Selective Startup”
Now just need to figure out how to start it up in “Normal”, if in fact that’s possible. Will keep you posted and if anyone has any further suggestions, that would be much appreciated.
I do hope this will help all the others that have run into the main issue, which I have found is caused by the Parallels Desktop by they way, not Microsoft, and that start having issues by getting the dreaded " hal.dll " file is missing or corrupt on a direct Boot to Windows.
    Very long and sleepless night….

  • How to enter Windows 8.1 safe mode in syslinux?

My old notebook is running very slowly as Windows 8.1 always reads/writes IDE hard disk, so I disable many windows services. And after relogin, I cannot open almost every program even the Task Manager.
It has to enter the 'safe mode' to repair Windows. In syslinux bootloader, I select 'Windows 8.1' then press Enter  and as quickly as I can to press F8. There's no effect that Windows loads into normal mode.
I know that in Linux world everything is a file, so I think I can locate last changed files in Windows when disabled windows services and try to repair it. After a long time searching, in Archlinux I rename '/Win8.1/Windows/System32/config' folder to config.bak ('/Win8.1' is where I mount C:/ partition) and then restart to Windows.
It works! Windows loads into safe mode.
But let Windows to repair itself is a heavy work. I wonder if I can repair just one or a few files in Archlinux to do the easy job. So relogin to Archlinux and recheck the config.bak folder. Yeah! I find a 'RegBack' folder in which the files' modified time is early than that outside with the same file name. So my easy job is to:
    $ cd /Win8.1/Windows/System32
    $ cp config.bak/RegBack/* config.bak
    $ mv config.bak config
Restart to Window, everything is back to good old day!
My lesson is YES EVERYTHING IS A FILE.
My question is beside the rename way, is there any way to enter Windows 8.1 safe mode in syslinux bootloader?

Try to manually interrupt the process while windows loading, it will eventually ask you to.
If don't, try clicking the restart button with shift pressed, if that too would not work; better ask in a microsoft forum.

  • How to run Lenovo t400 with Windows XP in safe mode

    Hi guys,
I caught a Spyware Portection Virus this morning while i was doing research on fish disease. The virus isn't letting me run any programs except Internet Explorer. I have found the program to delete it but I need a way to run it so the best way is to run Windows XP on safe mode. So how do you run windows xp in safe mode. I can't access the Microsoft Configuration program (msconfig). Any ideas of how to work through bios to boot up in sade mode?

Hit F8 at the splash screen

  • Prompts me for a Safe Mode Password and the reenter

When I add a ADDS object powershell still prompts me for a Safe Mode Password and the reenter even thought I have the code below.
    Where am I going wrong?
    $SecurePassword = ConvertTo-SecureString "E#$rty1248" -Asplaintext -Force
    Install-ADDSForest `
    -SafeModeAdministratorPassword $SecurePassword `

    Please try it that way:
    -safemodeadministratorpassword (convertto-securestring "Password1" -asplaintext -force)
    However, this is highly discouraged.
Instead, I would recommend storing the obfuscated password in a file and then re-use it:
    $file = "c:\pw.txt"
    $pw = read-host -prompt "Password:" -assecurestring
    $pw | ConvertFrom-SecureString | Set-Content $file
    -safemodeadministratorpassword (Get-Content $File | ConvertTo-SecureString)

  • I cannot sign into iCloud on my iMac.  I have read all of the help information, but that isn't working.  I cannot do anything with my system preferences - like add a new printer - because it won't log me in, sign me out, forget password doesn't work, etc.

I have been unable to log in to iCloud on my iMac.  None of the hints online have worked.  I can't sign in (with any password), sign out, the forget password doesn't work, the support button doesn't work.  It's locked.  I can't find anyway to fix this - I need to add a new printer ASAP - help!!!

The "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" window popped up a couple of weeks ago and is asking for my Apple ID password, which it will not accept,  It won't sign me out (I am not logged in), the support or forgot password buttons won't work.  With this window stuck open, I cannot access anything on system preferences.  I can't find any way to make it go away.  I have tried both my current and old Apple ID passwords, tried using FaceTime to login with the newer password, etc.

  • Does anyone else have two Apple IDs? I can't get rid of one of them. It's associated with my iCloud account and I can't fix it. The password doesn't work.

So, apparently I have two Apple IDs associated with my iPhone. One is an old aol address that got hacked and was shut down. Even aol doesn't recognize the email address anymore, and the password doesn't work. It's associated with my iCloud account, so now I can't access that account. My other Apple ID is with everything associated with my iPhone and everything works just fine. But now I can't get to my iCloud stuff. Has this ever happened to anyone else. The guy at the Apple store says he's never heard of it.

Does the alert refer to "Local Items?"

I just set up my yahoo email account on Mail, but
