Windows 8.1 Start Screen Problem

Bought a new Acer laptop yesterday and it works just fine with the Windows 8.1 except for this one thing. It's not really a major one but it still is a problem I can't tolerate. My Start Screen/Start Menu kind of like compresses into the upper left corner
of my screen. The upper left corner is the only 'functioning' area. I scroll and the tiles move and I can only see limited apps/programs. The rest of the screen is just blank, null. I'm pretty sure I haven't tweaked any settings that would result to this.
Help me guys and thank you.

Hi,

  • Windows 8.1 Start Screen via GPO

    Hello all,
Thanks for taking the time to read this.  I realise there are other posts with similar issues to myself, however having read through these posts and applied fixes provided, I am still unable to get this to work.  I am having an issue when trying
to apply the Start Screen Layout GPO.
I am attempting to configure this GPO on my Windows 8.1 test network at the moment, but having no joy with it.
I am using Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, and Windows 8.1 Enterprise.
Having done gpresult /r on my test workstation I can confirm the GPO has applied, and also when I check in the registry, the value has been changed in line with the GPO.
The .xml file is located on a share, although I have also tried the with the .xml file locally on a single test machine and the start screen still does not change.
Some of the policy is applying, as when I link the policy, I cannot then customize the start screen on my pc which from what I understand is expected behaviour.
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Doug

  • Pin bookmarks to Windows 8.1 start screen

    Hi,
I cant seem to pin any of my bookmarks to my Windows 8.1 start screen for easy access.
I can pin them easily enough to the bookmark bar in Firefox but thats not what I want to do.
Internet Explorer lets me do it but I cant seem to find a way to make a bookmark into a tile and placed on my start screen.
    Thanks for any help.

I cannont seem to find the way Windows 8 does this. Even when right clicking and trying to create a new shortcut it never completes.
So I tried it a different way. I pinned Firefox to the start screen, but changed my start pages in the Firefox settings.
Go to Options > General > Start up and set the homepage.

  • Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screen/Start Menu and Minimizing Modern Apps

How can I customize the start up menu?
If not on desktop, I cannot minimize a window. Please tell me how.

Windows 8/8.1 Metro mode doesn't have a "minimize switch" as Desktop mode, but we have alternative settings
when you want to minimize your metro app, just click the left-bottom corner
to back to the start screen, you can also switch between metro Apps or snap apps as described in the following link, it functions similar as desktop mode, so enjoy the new features.

  • X1 Carbon left touchpad = Windows 8.1 Start Screen

Hi all, I just upgraded my X1C to Windows 8.1 Pro (64bit) and am having a funky problem with my touchpad. Any time I depress the left button (as you know, there is no defined button, rather the bottom left portion of the 1-piece pad) it brings up my start menu/screen in Windows 8.1... if I depress the "left click" again, it goes back to desktop mode... Very strange... anyone ever seen this?
I went into UltraNav settings and clicked the 'defaults' button to no avail... I want my ability to 'left click' back please.
    Thanks all!

    Hi Justin,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that left click button of touchpad in your Lenovo X1 Carbon is not working properly.
I would suggest you to go to Control Panel -> Mouse -> Ultranav -> Click on Settings under Touchpad.
Expand the Buttons option and choose the Left Button Action.
Select Primary Click (Normal select, Normal drag) -> OK.

  • No Windows on Boot Start Screen?

When I start up my computer and hold the option key, the dual boot screen comes up and only shows Macintosh HD but not Windows, even though I installed Windows XP SP2. What's wrong? Can someone help me?

You are not the first to have this, a search for "Option" or such but the sad part is there is no known 'cure.'
Change the startup disk default in OS X or XP is the only thing that works.
Others have dual boot with both OSs showing via bootmanager (Option key) but Vista OS isn't showing in Startup Disk at all.
Thing of what it would be like if OPTION key didn't work, and neither did STARTUP DISK. Locked out.
I doesn't seem to matter how you installed Leopard or Windows, whether reformat the entire disk drive and start over, or upgraded over pre-existing systems.

  • Windows option on Start Screen sen after OS X Reinstall

So basically, I have been trying to set up Windows 8.1 Pro through Bootcamp on my iMac. It has been a nightmare. I ended up reformatting and repartitioning my Internal drive (3TB Fusion) to factory settings. Now, even after a fresh OS X reinstall of Mavericks, the Windows option is still present when I restart my computer holding "option" to get to the startup screen. How do I completely get rid of any existence of Windows on my machine so I may begin the process of Bootcamp?

  • How do I make web shortcuts into start screen tiles that can be pushed to all users profile on a computer in Windows 8.1 enterprise?

We are trying to roll out Windows 8.1 Enterpise in our school system (K-12).
The focus of this question is how do we take an internet web based shortcut and make it into a screen tile (on the start screen) which will appear for any user's start screen that logs on to the computer?
    The details:
We came upon a great paper that's entitled "Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screens by Using Group Policy".
By applying this paper we were able to accomplish our first goal: Lock down the start screen so no user could change it. We accomplished this by using the Start Screen Layout policy setting laid out in the paper.
Our second goal: to customize the start screen is only half way met. We can set up the start screen the way we want and then export the .xml file. We are able to "reimport" the .xml file when the new user logs in. The installed programs
will appear on the Start Screen but not the internet based web shortcuts that were on the inital setup start screen.
(FYI - tried creating these tiles by running the start screen internet explorer app to the intended address and pinning them to the start screen. At this time trying to figure if there is a place to put desktop internet short cuts into a directory to make
them appear on the Start Screen).
We can see that the directory: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs is a place for program files to appear on the start screen. Is there a location web based shortcuts can be placed to cause them to automatically appear on the start
screen for every user as well? If not how do we accomplish getting these into tiles for every user logging in?
Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Hopefully it gets our question answered and helps others out there in the same boat!

    Karen-
Results: Did not work. The web based shortcuts did not appear.
Below is the steps taken with your tips incorporated. (Again it's lengthy sorry about that, but anyone can recreate what was done here. Maybe someone can see something left out by doing/reviewing it).
    Here is what was done:
    1. Installed a fresh install of Windows 8.1 enterprise on a pc. No updates were ran.
    2. During setup created the admin account.
    3. Logged into the account a simple start screen was arranged and setup by:
Starting desktop Internet Explorer. Going to Technet's website. Clicked tools and then selecting "Add site to Apps" from the drop down menu. Went to Apps screen, right clicked and pinned it to start screen. Repeated this procedure with an
    educational web based site.
Right clicked a few provisioned apps and unpinned them from the start screen.
Made a few groups and labeled them. Web based shortcuts were arranged with one provisioned app in that particular group.
    4. Opened a Powershell, right clicked it and ran as administrator. Typed the following:
    export-startlayout -path C:\Users\Public\Master.xml -as xml
(Master is the name chosen for this test .xml file and was put in a location all users would have privelages to access it).
    5. Opened the command prompt and right clicked and "ran as administrator", typed in gpedit.
    6. In the Local Group Policy under User Configuration, under Start Menu and Taskbar I choose the Start Screen Layout.
    7. Enabled the policy and typed in: C:\Users\Public\Master.xml for the Start Layout File.
    8. Opened computer management, under Local Users and Groups I chose Users, right clicked in the middle screen and created a new user called Alpha.
    9. Logged out of the inital account and logged into newly created Alpha account.
    10. When the Alpha account logged in the start screen came up with everything changed in the inital account but no web based shortcuts were found on the start screen or App view.

  • Start Screen Layout with Windows 8.1

    Hi Team,
Just wondering if below Technet article for capture and deploy start screen layout applies to windows 8.1\windows 8.1 update 1?

As far as i understand these 3 methods are good with windows 8.0 but with Windows 8.1 , capture layout with
Export-StartLayout and using GP is applicable. Any pointers will be appreciated.

  • Start Screen Layout missing icon

One of the program I pinned to the Start Screen is missing. The program that's missing is the Opera browser. I created a custom start screen layout with all the programs I want in different namegroups. I put the AppsFolderLayout.bin file in the Default profile.
I am preparing a Windows 8.1 image. I do this so all users can have the same Start Screen layout. The first time I did this, it worked fine. I logged in as new users in the computers and I see all the programs I pinned to the Start Screen.
Right now, I'm doing the exact thing for a new Windows 8.1 image. I placed the AppsFolderLayout.bin file in the Default profile. I logged in as a new user and many. The Start Screen is empty, other than the Desktop and Computer tiles, since it's a new
Windows install, The programs that are pinned are not installed yet. When I install the programs, the tiles will populate to the Start Screen. All of them worked, except for the Opera browser. The Opera browser is not showing the Start Screen. I made sure
the program is pinned before I exported the layout. The program is installed for all user.
I checked the program is installed when I log in as different users. I
even deleted the user profiles that was installed on and logged in again, the icon is still not there.
Would a new version of the browser cause this issue? I even installed the version I had when I first had it working and it didn't work. Let me know what would cause this issue.

    Hi,
Please use the command “get-startapps” in powershell.
We have tested. Every time we reinstall the Opera, the AppID will change.
The AppID is the identifier of app. If it changes automatically, the Operating System can’t customize Start screen by different AppID.
Please refer to the following article to customize Windows 8.1 start screen.
Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screens by Using Group Policy
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn467928.aspx
If you change the AppID in xml file to match the ID in the PC you want to customize Start screen. The Opera will show out.

  • How to How to install ATI Radeon HD2600 driver on bootcamp 3.0 windows 7 partition w/black screen problem

Ok....so i've posted this question in a different way, and i gotten several "scratch the surface" answers from people just saying to install "Ati catalyst", or insert the os x dvd and run set up.exe, and update  to boot camp 3.1 or 3.2...while these all seem like great suggestions, I am finding myself needing more specific direction or "hand holding" so to speak.....here is the MAIN problem...
    The Background/history
I used boot camp (3.0, and i found updates for 3.1 for imac and for windows, but can't find for mac pro, AND they all are ".exe" files which run on windows..which as you'll see is the big part of my problem...So I recently updated my mac pro (with the ATI Radeon HD2600 graphic PCIe card with 10.6.7 from 10.5.8.  I created a single partitioned drive to install windows 7 professional 64 bit.  The download software function didn't work (Thanks, APPLE for that poor level of support) so have to select the option that i have already downloaded, or have other media with the drivers already on it....i restarted with the windows 7 disk in....
The installation of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
So the installation of windows 7 seemed to go flawlessly, was able to use my existing 23" hd apple cinema display (so somehow it has drivers that work with the graphics card, or maybe the motherboard's on board video components) and i select english, and install now, custom, blah, blah, blah...installation causes a few reboots, then restarts ultimately back in os x since that is the default boot os i use on this desk top and have to do the "opt" button to select booting in windows....so when i try restarting in windows, now using the actual boot drive on which i am installing it, it ran through another reboot or two, but then after that, my display goes black....  in the communities, the solution sounds super simple... "go download the ATI catalyst for the black screen problem....windows 7 doesn't have device drivers that work with the ATI radeon hd2600...no problem, just go download and install...."
The problem, re-emphasized :  I cannot even finish the install for windows, because of this driver problem....i cannot see anything....I have tried to reboot in safe mode, and that then seems to invoke whatever basic drivers that do work, likely through the motherboards onboard video vs the actual graphic card, and the screen works and says that it's wanting to complete the installation, so i'm thinking awesome this is gonna work....and then.. "windows installation was not completed and cannot be completed in SAFE MODE, need to restart, blah, blah, blah" pops up...and forces reboot...so Safe Mode allows me to see, but won't allow me to finish the install of windows 7...and without completing the install i can't run (ranther I DONT KNOW HOW TO) any of the various .exe files everyone is telling me are the solutions to my problem...like update 3.1 and 3.2 bootcamp...they're all .exe files?  not sure why, because bootcamp runs in 10.6.7 i thought, but whatever...it needs running Windows to execute...then the ATI radeon hd2600 driver for windows 7 that i downloaded from the site has an installation program that is an .exe file, which needs windows to run...  Does this make sense, why i can't just use these fixes, that seem to be the only fixes out there....so can someone school me step by step here (not just the highlights) of how to update bootcamp, and how to install the ati radeon driver  without having been able to complete the windows 7 installation because the monitor goes and stays black????
This is so very frustrating for the record...and any substantial help "not just go download this..." would be immensely appreciated.
Some other things i've been told to try that i've tried and nothing seems to happen as i'm told it will....
---I've been told to install the osx dvd and run "setup.exe"  - AGAIN...it's an exe file...and 2 - when i put in the os x file it just wants to re install 10.6...so need more help if this is even a real solution to understand how to make it work...
---I've been told to update boot camp to 3.1 and/or 3.2 from 3.0, using Apple Software Update....Well, my software update is saying everything is up to date and there is nothing new to download at all, and when i reverify the bootcamp version it is still only 3.0.2...and again downloading the updates from www.apple.com/support/  for 3.1 and 3.2...all of those are .exe files...need windows to run them...again, refer to the problem described in detail above...
---I've been referred to the black screen on imac early 2011 thread saying it should fix my problem...and reading it it SEEMED like the most promising resolution...it involves creating a boot flash drive for windows 7 and an xml file that sets the imac drivers to auto install during the windows installation..and it got me farther than anything else..but still ultimately ended up in the darned black screen...my assumption is that it's because it's for imac and not mac pro so not ati-radeon specific drivers....ok....that's enough..please...anyone who thinks they can help...your help is desperately needed...thanks so much in advance!

hey Hatter, thanks so much for getting back...so just to be super clear...is there no way to install the drivers using an exe file given my current state? no way to do it with command prompt or something?  if can make work with existing card, i'd prefer it...now when you say it's 'toast' how do you mean?  it works well with the os x partitions and always has...so i'm not sure i follow, just want to be clear...
Now to your point of starting with only the one drive installed...so i would put that bootcamp drive in bay 1 and disconnect the rest...i'm not totally sure what you're suggesting the effect should be of doing this?  just that i'm just installing windows without the bootcamp deal...but if windows 7 doesn't support the ati radeon hd2600, it still will go black screen no? or you're saying it will run video through the motherboard if it's the only bootdrive, and will run all the way through the windows install without trying to switch over to the hd2600?  (slrry flr these questions..just really want to make sure i understand what you're telling me..thanks so much for your patience and help by the way...it's very greatly appreciated...your support is priceless!
So now, assuming none of the above is possible...referring now to the ati 5770 that you referred to...you mention it works with 10.6 well, and that windows 7 supports it ...2 questions on that
         1) Windows 7 supports" meaning, out of the box windows 7 supports it? or will i have to install drivers still through some update, because again, if that's how i have to do it, then won't work, cuz can't start windows to see anything to install any drivers or run any thing at all...so it would have to just work with initial installation.
2)hardware wise for my Mac Pro 3,1...intel dual quad core xeon, blah blah....will this card work? it's a PCIe and should fit on my board no prob, etc?

  • ENVY dv7 laptop - Start screen in Windows 8 just flashes, can't get past that.

Hello - the other night my daughter unplugged the AC adaptor to work away from her desk. Then, she plugged it in again and the screen was blank. She restarted, click on the User and the screen was just black. We shut down and started again and it would power up, then bring up the User prompt, but after you clicked that, the Windows 8 Start screen would just flash and you couldn't click on anything.
I have followed directions for a hard reset (removing the battery, discharging any extra power and starting back up w/out peripherals attached), but that didn't work. I also tried disabling Windows Error Reporting Service and that didn't work. Also, I ran a quick systems check that said everying passed. Wondering what else I can try?
    Thanks for any help!

If you restored the hard drive to its original factory-new contents using the Toshiba recovery media, then the problem is almost certainly due to malfunctioning hardware.
