Windows 8.1 Storage Spaces... won't release the space

So I have a Storage Space in Windows 8.1, it a 7 drive Pool in Parity mode with 3x 4TB drives and 4x 3TB drives. Things had been working well until I had a 3 TB drive fail, and had it RMA'd by Seagate. One of those 4TB drives was added just now also as
an upgrade.
The actual drive sizes add up to 24TB with a Formatted size of 21.77TB (3.63TB and 2.72TB respectively for 4TB and 3TB drives).
When I added the 2 new drives into the array, I thought things would work well. Since Storage Spaces doesn't have anything built in yet to redistribute the data after adding a new drive, I did a copy and then a delete of the data. This is the best recommendation
that I've currently been able to find to redistribute the data.
However, I ran out of space. Weird, since I have ample free space.
So I started moving the data off the array/space. I've now cleared the array down to just 2.62TB, with the Windows Properties reading 13.3 TB free (Parity Capacity is 15.9 TB, roughly 2/3 or the total space, which was expected). However, in the Storage Spaces
listing, my drives are listed as 90% full. This is true EVEN NOW that I've move everything but 2.72TB left.
Quick math: 2.72TB / 15.9 TB is 17.1% used, leaving 82.9% free.
However, I can't seem to "release" the space. Again, copying the data over did NOT work. and Deleting the data from the array/space DID NOT work. I can't fathom how when I delete the data from the array, it still lists it as 90% full.
Any help or ideas?

Hi,
Which method did you use to create Storage pool, simple spaces, mirror spaces, or parity spaces?
Would you please capture a screenshot of your Storeage pool?

Has anyone else seen Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces with a Simple RAID 0 (also happens with Mirrored RAID 1 and Parity RAID 5) virtual disk exhibiting extremely slow read speed of 5Mb/sec, yet write performance is normal at 650Mb/sec in RAID 0?

Hitachi drives are directly connected to LSI 9207-8e using a 2-meter SAS SFF-8088 to eSATA cable to six-inch eSATA/SATA adapter.
The Enterprise drives are on LSI's compatibility list.  The Desktop drives are not, but regardless, both drive models are affected by the problem.
Interestingly, this entire configuration but with two SIIG eSATA 2-Port adapters instead of the LSI 9207-8e, works perfectly with both reads and writes at 670Mb/sec.
I thought SAS was going to be a sure bet for expanding beyond the capacity of port limited eSATA adapters, but after a week of frustration and spending over $5,000.00 on drives, controllers and cabling, it's time to ask for help!

    1) Yes, being slow either on reads or on writes is a quite common situation for storage spaces. See references (with some of the solutions I hope):

  • Drag and drop, it won't release the file.

Upon booting up my 15"MBP with osx Lion, when I drag and drop a file, it won't release the file.  This happens across files, other programs, etc. The only fix is to put the computer to "sleep", then when it turns back on drag and drop works fine.
Is there a fix for this issue?  It happens on every boot up.

To clarify, it's not just Air DIsplay but any third-party video driver. When any of these is installed (not even necessarily active) on a MBP5,1, MBP5,2, or MBP5,3, you'll have this issue. The workaround is detailed here: Air Display on Lion with NVIDIA 9400/9600

  • Windows 8 Pro - Storage Spaces

    OS: Windows 8 Pro x64
    Resiliency: Parity
    5 Drives (WD 3TB x 3, WD 750GB, WD 500GB)
Using 6.67TB of 8.86TB pool capacity
Today I arrived home to find that there was an issue with one of the drives in my Storage Spaces pool. The disk displayed the error 'Warning stale, enable pool'.
After rebooting the workstation the disk is now displaying the error message 'Warning Disconnected; reconnect drive'.
The drive is spinning up and appears in the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' menu in the taskbar. The LED on the drive is also flashing as though data is being read/written from/to it.
Am I able to simply format the drive and add it back to the pool?
Will this rebuild the data using the parity from the other drives?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    For your two questions:
Am I able to simply format the drive and add it back to the pool?  Yes, we can format the drive and readd it to the pool
Will this rebuild the data using the parity from the other drives? Yes, the data will come back.

  • Set up RAID0 in Windows 8 - use "Storage Spaces"?

I just finished a successful clean-install of windows 8 on my media machine (Asus X79WS, GeForce 570, OS on SSD, 4x1TB WD Black HDDs on the Intel Ports). I created a 4-disk raid0 in BIOS which shows up in Device Mgr. In looking thru Windows 8 to find where to initialize the HDs, I stumbled across something called "Storage Spaces" which appears to be a Windows version of RAID1.
Would using "Storage Spaces" allow the use of WD Black drives in a parity raid??
Is there any advantage in using "Storage Spaces" over using the BIOS RAID0??
    Thanks,
    Dorothy

I did a little digging on the internet and found that the performance of the WIndows 8 Storage Space is "beyond poor" so I'm going back to my original RAID0.

  • WIndows 8.1 Storage Space failing -- having trouble even getting information.

    Hello,
I've looked at a bunch of articles to try to sort this out, but haven't found anything. I hope I'm just missing something obvious. :-/
Here's my setup: in addition to a system drive, I have three additional, identical disks (WD Red, 2TB) that I have placed in a storage pool. Out of these, I've carved three storage spaces: two set for mirroring, one for parity.
Something's gone awry... (or I wouldn't be here):
If I try to open up the "Storage Spaces" control panel, it just hangs. Task manager reports it as "not responding".
In PowerShell, running "get-virtualdisk" reported the OperationalStatus of the three virtual drives as InService for a while, but then started showing them as Degraded. Interestingly, these degraded disks seem to flip back to InService every so
often. The HealthStatus is always listed as Warning.
Running "get-physicaldisk", however, shows all three physical drives with an OperationalSatus of OK and HealthStatus of Healthy.
The system shows ~25% disk usage, making me thing that something is going on, but who knows...
I can browse into the two mirrored storage spaces, and things superficially look okay. I cannot open up the parity space.
I have an offsite backup through one of these cloud services, but it will be cheaper and faster to get this machine back on its feet rather than order up a copy of the backup.
So, wondering how to proceed here:
    Are things clearly hosed?
If there is hope, what are the next steps in debugging/fixing this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Pavilion g6 updated to windows 8.1 now tv won't display the screen

I cracked the screen of my HP Pavilion g6, so I usually connect it through HDMI to my Coby TV and it usually worked fine. Now, after updating to Windows 8.1, my TV won't display anything. I believe it is because the screen is black, and my TV never displayed a black screen before, it only showed the screen once the laptop has started up. I've tried pressing f4 and i can see that the screen is blue in the small area of my screen that still works, but it still isn't showing through my TV so I don't know how I can fix this problem because I cannot see the screen. Please help!

  • Uploading file with Java: Java won't release the file.

I'm trying to upload .log files to a webbsite using a form. It uploads fine, that's not the problem. The problem is that I want it to delete the file afterwards to save disk space, but the application doesn't release it. I thought I might just be doing something wrong with the delete function, but even deleting it manually through Windows doesn't work. Any ideas?

  • What can you do to access Password options in the Security window if your Firefox browser won't display the options?

I want to stop and prevent my Firefox browser from saving website passwords, which I understand can be done using the Security window.
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/security-and-passwords-settings?esab=a&s=passwords&r=1&as=s
Unfortunately, once opened, the Security window doesn't display the password options check boxes for me even though that's what the support site says the browser should do it. Neither can I get the Security window to extend to display the other potential options, which leads to me think there aren't any other options.
Any ideas what I can do about this problem? I'm running Mac OS 10.8.5 and Firefox 30.0. Thanks for any advice!

Another thing Safe Mode does is ignore the localstore.rdf file, which contains toolbar/window/dialog layout information and sometimes can become corrupted. To eliminate localstore.rdf as a factor, you can rename the file and customize from scratch.
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * (classic menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste '''about:support''' in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button.
Leaving that window open, switch back over to Firefox and Exit/Quit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''localstore.rdf''' to something like localstore.old
Start Firefox up again. Any improvement?

  • Firefox 23 won't release windows focus

Lately, since FF 23.0.1, my "main" FF window (the one where I keep gmail and other pinned tabs), simply won't release the focus to any other Firefox window or any other app at all. To see the other windows, I have to minimize this one.
I closed it yesterday, and for a while after I reopened, it allowed other things to take focus, but then it stopped allowing again.
I've tried closing every single tab but a blank one, and it still won't release.
    Any thoughts?
    Running Win7, 64-bit.

I think so. A couple windows have youtubes that I haven't watched yet. Is that what you mean?
However, I used to have such open without this issue.
Also, it continued after I closed all the tabs. Would that not have "fixed" it?

  • Unable to repair degraded Virtual disks in Storage Spaces under Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core

    Hi all,
I am finding myself in the following conundrum. I have a storage pool under Hyper-V Core, with 2 2TB Seagate drives.
One of the drives completely died (wouldn't spin up, tried it in a different box, still to no avail). I sent it in to Seagate for warranty replacement, got the new drive. Installed it and went through the notions of adding it to the pool and retiring the
one that was with "Lost Communication" status.
Tried to repair the virtual disks that are showing as "Unhealthy-Detached", quickly get 100% complete, but the repair didnt work.
The storage pool is in degraded state.
    Looks like metadata is corrupted.
Followed this post to upgrade Storage Spaces to latest version:
     https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/eead59e9-5e49-4bb6-8cbb-1dafddd9576b/unable-to-repair-degraded-virtual-disks-in-storage-spaces-2012r2?forum=winserverfiles
    Still, to no avail.
    Couple of questions:
    1) Is the data on the 3 virtual disks in state "Unhealthy: Detached" not recoverable?
    2) How can I get the storage pool back to "healthy"?

  • Replacing a failed disk in storage space ! unable to remove a retired disk

    Hi Folks
Not really asking for much !! we are using windows 2012 R2 storage space ; one disk failed
    and marked as retired.
today we received replacement disk ; added that to storage pool - fine.
then I repaired all Virtual Disk - process was very quick and went to 100% like a flash.
then I tried to remove faulty disk by using following commands :
    $DeadDisk=Get-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk-1
    FriendlyName        CanPool             OperationalStatus   HealthStatus        Usage
     Size
PhysicalDisk-1      False               Lost Communication  Warning             Retired                        185.5
    GB
    Remove-PhysicalDisk -PhysicalDisks $deaddisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName storagePool
this errored out ; basically saying that the above disk is still in-use !
Any suggestions ? does repair job take some time ? it looked very fast ; when I did get-storagejob ; it showed 100 percent completed .

    Hi,
Please reboot the server then set the failed disk to "Retired" and remove the retired physical disk.
You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Replace 2 old SANS with Storage Spaces?

We have two old HP SANs we want to replace before they fail.
All our hosts are Hyper-V and the VMs all Microsoft OSes.
We can replace them with equivalent SANs but I would like to ask you was to the comparison with a Storage Space solution: eliminating the rather idiosyncratic SAN management software etc..
    CarolChi

    Hi Carol,
Is there any specific question regarding this topic?
General speaking, Storage Space is somewhere similar to software RAID - you can create simple volume (RAID0), mirror volume (RAID1) or parity volume (RAID5). And there are some other options such as dual parity, 3-way mirror etc. You can manually confige
these options with PowerShell cmdlet so in order to manage Storage Space, you may need to realize related PowerShell cmdlet first.
And here is an article which introduced Storage Space:

  • DS 1.3 Charts will not release the selected Item.

    Hello all,
I have problem with Design Studio 1.3 we developed a couple of dashboards with DS 1.2. Now we upgraded dashboards to 1.3. We used Chart selection functionality to filter values on other charts etc. We also using dynamic visibility if you click on a chart it filters another chart and disappears and brings a new chart. To go back, we used a button to clear filter and make the first chart visible.
Now, before upgrading after the chart disappeared and clicked on a button to remove the filters, the chart would release the selected item on itself. However, after the upgrade, this won't work because the chart won't release the selected item. It just keeps selecting even after we clear all filters and make it visible.
I have been searching and trying to find a solution for this, but I couldn't come up with some kind of idea. And in scripts and don't see setSelectedItem or setSelectedValue or reset the selection. etc
    1. Create a button with the script below: (BUTTON_1) This will clear the filter and make the chart disappear.
    DS_2.clearFilter("0PLANT"); //Map DS_2 to another chart
    CHART_1.setVisible(false); //Chart using DS_1
    2. Create another button with the script below: (BUTTON_2) This will set the chart visible.
    CHART_1.setVisible(true);
    3. Click CHART_1 and select item.
    4. Click BUTTON_1 to clear selected filter.
    5. Click BUTTON_2 to make CHART_1 visible again.
One you click the second button it will set the filter back which was clicked in step 3.
Does anyone have idea on this? How could I reset the charts' selection?
Your help will be appreciated it greatly.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
In Design Studio 1.3  (SP0 & SP1), enhancing functionality was delivered with the new ability of the user to bookmark design studio applications and recall these bookmarks within the application. This resulted in changes to the behaviour of charts wrt selection of chart members....
As I understand this, the issue here is really around chart selection not persisting in Design studio 1.2, while chart selection is persisted in 1.3 release.
In 1.2 release, when the original chart is hidden and made visible again , the chart selection is not present when the chart reappears, and does not need to be cleared. In this case the chart is rerendered in its initial state in the browser (no selection).
In 1.3 release, selection within the chart is now persisted in general, this can be seen when a chart with a selection is hidden and made visible. In this case the chart is rerendered with selected member present in the browser. By clearing this selection within the chart, the user is now firing again the OnSelect event. (This causes the chart to be hidden and data source filtered again).
The scripting attached to the chart just needs to be modifed slightly to cover this scenario. The result of the getSelectedMember() func call needs to be checked to see if a valid selection is returned.
    For example :
    var temp = CHART_1.getSelectedMember("0BC_TYPE");
    if (temp.text != "") {
          DS_1.setFilter("0BC_TYPE", temp);
          CHART_1.setVisible(false);
          CHART_2.setVisible(true);
The addition of an "if" statement in this case (marked in bold above), checks that if a member within the chart is not selected, in this case no value ("") is returned, and the Data src is not filtered/charts are not hidden & shown as before.
So the issue in 1.3 SP1 is in relation to the persistence of the selection within the chart, which when cleared, fires the onSelect event again (resulting in undesired filtering of data src again).
Hopefully the above scripting will resolve this issue for you....
    Best regards,
    Brian
