Windows 8.1 Update 1 Kiosk Mode difference

We have a number of stations running modern IE on Windows 8.1 in Kiosk Mode. I ran the in-place upgrade on a few of them to test Windows 8.1 Update 1.  Everything runs fine except that hitting the Windows key 5 times no longer takes you to the login
screen. Is this by design or just something that was over looked? I also noticed that Crt+Alt+Del works and though I haven't gone back to the original machines that have not been upgraded yet, I believe this didn't used to work.

Hi,
Sorry for late reply.
Based on my test,we didn't meet this issue.
I suggest that we check the Group policy  first.

  • Windows 8.1 Won't get updates in audit mode.

I just installed Windows 8.1 in a Hyper-V virtual machine. The release version that was distributed through msdn not the preview. I enter audit mode as soon as I can, so there have been no changes or customization applied to the install prior to entering
audit mode. I start up windows update to search for new updates. The status is displayed as "Checking for updates..." "Most recent check for updates: Never." "Updates were installed: Never." The status never changes from "Checking
for updates...". I have even left it running over night and it still says "Checking for updates...". There is never any error message or failure. Network connectivity is functional. I have attempted an install on a physical machine as well with
the same result. If instead of entering audit mode a proceed through setting up windows and a user account, updates will work just fine. There should be an update to defender as well as an update to ie11.
I considered the possibility of a corrupt download so I compared the sha-1 hash to what is listed on the msdn download page and it does match.

Thank You for sharing the logs. I was able to reproduce the issue in my virtual environment. To understand more about this behavior, I engaged the Product Group and I have been informed that
this behavior is By Design. WU uses the OOBEComplete() Windows API call to determine whether OOBE is in progress or not, and if so, it will not perform automatic or UI update searches. HRESULT code 0x8024a008 is the WU error code WU_E_AU_OOBE_IN_PROGRESS.
WU automatic and UI updates won’t run while Setup reports that OOBE is still in progress. This is to prevent automatic updates from causing a system reboot during OOBE, which is – needless to say – a Very Bad Thing. This problem has always existed. Unfortunately,
when the computer is in Sysprep audit mode, Setup will report to WU that OOBE is in progress even though it might not actually be so. This is the reason that updates from WU UIs are blocked in audit mode.
I was having the same exact issue when creating an updated WDS image for deployment to select end-users for testing.  At first, I thought I was doing something wrong.  This process--having a VM boot into audit mode so that it can be fully updated
with Windows Updates along with new and updated third-party applications so to become the baseline/template for deployment--has worked wonderfully since the Vista days.  And it worked perfectly with Windows 8.  Why did Microsoft choose to deprecate
    the functionality is beyond me.
Its bad enough there is so very little traction in the corporate/Gov't world for Windows 8/8.1.  Now it seems that Microsoft, once again, is hades bent on destroying all that was good with Windows.
This is to prevent automatic updates from causing a system reboot during OOBE, which is – needless to say – a Very Bad Thing.
So this was a problem?  Really?  I don't ever recall that happening to me or ever reading about such an issue.  Even if this "issue" was a problem, why not just add another switch to the sysprep command to allow admins to specify
the allowance of updates.  Something like like sysprep /oobe /audit /AllowUpdates?  Is that too hard or too much to ask?
So now with the current Windows-won't-update-in-audit-mode default, if I chose to deploy over 200 Windows 8.1 Enterprise clients, I now have to have ALL 200 machines contact Microsoft Update or my internal WSUS (or push via Shavlik) for updates.  Regardless
of which method is used, the result is that 200 COMPUTERS must consume valuable network bandwidth for updates.  Not to mention there is always several machines that never act right.  Instead of having 200
identically configured machines, I end up with 200 similarly configured machines.
Exactly who is making these decisions?  Has anyone experienced the OOBE update issue that Microsoft claims is such a problem?
    So disappointing.

  • Display window task bar on web page opened in kiosk mode.

    I am using IE8 in Window 7.
I open a certain web page in kiosk mode (call IE browser with -k option, a full screen without window frame). How can the window task bar be displayed at the bottom of the web page while the web page is in kiosk mode?
    Thank you for advice.

    Hi,
If you are using kiosk mode for a public access terminal, then you use the default Guest user account and use GPO to limit their access to other applications that are installed at the machine level.
How the web browser opens links from other programs is set in Internet Options.
I don't think your EULA's cover Word or Outlook on public access computers.
Allowing the public to access the windows shell is asking for trouble.... putty and your networks mud.
Firstly you should update the machine with the latest Windows updates and IE11. And download the admx files and use GPEdit applied to the Guest account to lock down the machine for that user account.(including the shell)

  • How to launch a single URL in a locked windowed-kiosk mode?

We need to launch a specific URL in Firefox in a windowed-kiosk mode.
If this can be done via a command-line that would be great. The Company want to restrict the use of the browser to this one specific URL and only allow close controls on the opened app window.
    Is this possible?
    Any help much appreciated!

These options might be dangerous. If someone who knew nothing about the program with this function and he uses this program, it might hurt his system. Since this, it would be better not to post this code in the forum to avoid someone tried the code and hurt
    his system.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Windows 8.1 update has been stuck in "Preparing to install" mode for 3 days now and I cannot stop it

My Windows 8.1 update has been showing "Preparing to install..." for 3 days now. When I click "Stop installation" it says I need to provide administrator permission and doesn't have any way for me to provide this. My account is the administrator
    account for my laptop.
I have already seen a similar thread that said to open a command prompt with admin privileges and type "slmgr -skms", but the solution did NOT work. Basically, it said the usage was incorrect and popped up 5 windows of information that I didn't
know how to interpret (yes, I tried to provide the options it wanted, but they were incorrect).
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Ah! This did the trick! Thanks!
In case anyone else has this problem, on Windows 8.1 I had to open up the Control Panel, then type "troubleshooter" in the search box. I clicked "Troubleshooting" and then found "Fix problems with Windows Update" under the System and Security section.

  • AIR application in KIOSK mode

    Hi
I would like to develop AIR application that will work in KIOSK mode.
I have to use Native methods, so application will be released as Native Installer (.exe file).
    Problem begins with updating application.
Imagine I have 20 kiosk running in low privileged rights /security reasons/.
I would like to update my application, so I have new .exe installation file.
But instalation requires admin right on machine with kiosk mode.
So I can't update it automaticly.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
    Many thanks.

    Hello Chris,
Thanks for a reply but it was not about update mechanism.
I am using http://code.google.com/p/nativeapplicationupdater/ which works like a charm.
But when the downloaded update file runs there is an installer.
The (adobe air) installer requires permissions + OS admin rights + user agree to replace the old version.
[so there are 2 popups I don't want]
Is there any way to make it automaticly / silent way ?
Maybe some coniguration in Windows / Adobe AIR runtime ?

  • Kiosk mode still shows taskbar in foreground

hello, I have a shortcut that launches IE10 in Kiosk mode. it is pinned to the taskbar and/or a shortcut on desktop. When I start it from an icon, it opens in the foreground and covers the taskbar.
however when starting from startup folder upon an auto-logon, it opens behind the taskbar. I would like to have it open the same as when I double click the shortcut in front of the taskbar. I would prefer not to do this by auto-hiding taskbar (for
    some other reasons).

It is disappointing this has never been fixed and this is a painful solution but you can use third party software. For example by using
    http://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker-v4-5-with-windows-8-1-update-1-support
(Warning - you may experience unexpected side effects with this or any solution) This is a standalone executable but after running it you will have an icon in the task tray.
    - choose any options you may want from the 7+ Taskbar Tweaker window, then close the window.
    - right click the task tray icon and select Settings
    - selecting Run at Startup will add an entry to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    - close Settings
    - right click the task tray icon and select Advanced Options
    - right click the "disable topmost" line and select modify
    - a value of 1 seems to stop windows from opening behind the taskbar.
    - a value of 2 allows maximized windows to cover the taskbar (but seems to prevent some notifications from appearing even when no window is maximized)
    - click Help in the Advanced Options for descriptions of the other entries.
You may still have to order the launching of your startup programs to ensure IE starts after the above has taken effect but there are many ways to do this eg
    http://www.howtogeek.com/52043/how-to-control-the-order-of-startup-programs-in-windows/

  • How to disable dangerous options in on screen keyboard in kiosk mode?

    Hello,
I'm trying to make a kiosk like application based on Windows 7. I run locked down IE in kiosk mode and that's quite OK.
However when I run the OSK.exe (on screen keyboard) - it has two dangerous buttons: Options (where I can click on "Control whether the On-Screen Keyboard starts when I log on" link and then run Windows explorer, and Help (where I can go to Options, and then
click on "Read the privacy statement online" link that brings me fresh IE).
Is there way to disable in OSK those two buttons?
For instance, when I run OSK on logon screen it hides the Help button and the dangerous link in the Options button, so it's possible at least for MS. Is it possible for plain customers?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nikolai.
    WBR, Nikolai

    Hi,
Based on my test and research, I’m afraid that the two options of On-screen Keyboard may not be disabled.
    Instead, you can use
Tablet PC Input Panel and see how it works.
    Hope this helps.

My iMac suddenly no longer connects to wifi network when in KIOSK (username) mode, and only connects when as ADMINISTRATOR mode. Its strange because the iMac has been working fine in KIOSK mode for over a year until 2 days ago.

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • Windows 8.1 update attempt bricked the machine in bootloop and now automatic repair loop

Hi, I attempted the windows 8.1 update w. failure.
    =============1st part============
the machine is stuck in bootloop initially, searched the forum and tried several things like the "recovery" options and making a install USB drive to do repairs.  Nothing worked.
Even use the bcdedit commands and other /fixmbr stuff.
I have a Dell Inspiron 14z w. Intel Storage Technology.  So I even went into the BIOS to disable it to use Legacy stuff w. disable Intel Storage Techology.
Any common sense workable help would be appreciated.
    =============2nd part============
I was able to get into the System Restore option, selected a restore point but failure again when the C: drive selection stated "You must enable system protection on this drive" and can't proceed.

    Hi,
About this problem, it seems like there is not any method can fix it, Windows encounter problem during Windows upgrade first boot, Windows 8.1 already installed but new system configuration failed. This is problem why you use install USB drive to repair
    but failed.
In my opinion, it's hard to fix it, the worst result is you may need to reinstall you system. While here is some methods you still can have a try.
    1. Boot into System repair mode as you said. find Command Prompt option.
    2. Open Command Prompt mode, type Bootrec.exe and press
    Enter.
    3. Try to use the command below to fix system.
    bootrec /FixBoot
    bootrec /ScanOs
    bootrec /RebuildBcd

  • UNABLE or CAN NOT Install Printer, Windows 8 calls it a Kernel Mode Driver

    Very similar to
    this thread.
None of the provided solutions work.  I wish I could get a screenshot, but this is a computer I was working on for a friend and won't be back there for a couple of days.
    Things I have tried:
Download absolute latest Windows 8 x64 Driver from HP's website for the specific printer in question (hp laserjet pro color m251nw).  Tried both "driver only" and "full installation" downloads.
Told Windows to use a driver from Windows Update.
There is no Citrix based application to uninstall anywhere on the computer.
The computer is Windows 8 "standard" - so using GPEdit to Disable "Disallow installation of kernel-mode printer drivers" was not an option (although I did use a
3rd party GPEditor to try to modify this setting anyway, to no avail).
I used Advanced Startup to boot without Driver Signature Verification.
Disabled Anti-Virus software to ensure it wasn't preventing installation.
I ensured the local user on the computer had full permissions to the Devices and Printers menu.
I tried to install everything using "Right Click / Run as Administrator"
I tried to install using both Windows 7 and XP SP3 Compatibility Modes.
I have ensured there are no files in the Print Spools folder (C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers\). and reset the print spooler.
I am able to ping the network printer and it prints test pages, I do not believe there to be a problem with the printer itself, just some strange setting causing me all of these problems.
HELP!  I'm an IT Pro but I spent 3 hours on this and I'm not used to being utterly defeated!
Thanks in advance for any and all advice!!!!

    I wish I could get a screenshot
What are the chances of it being a bogus message?  For that reason and others I would be running ProcMon to find, correlate and supplement any and all diagnostics which are being produced.  Filter with  Operation Is WriteFile.  You
need to infer which WriteFile  corresponds with which message but that is relatively easy because the Detail contains a close approximation to each message's length.  In any case, you get to see all the files that were involved and easy access to
    them.

  • Boot Camp Update and W7 Mode

This is a new one on me. I was working in W7 and discovered after a time there was the familiar Apple s/w Update requester behind a few windows, It showed updates for Boot Camp - over 320 M and for Itunes and Quicktime. Problem is that it was not feasible to download at the time and I reverted to Mac
When I went back to W7 the update requester was nowhere to be found and when I did a s/w update on the Mac side it did not ID a Boot Camp upgrade
Questions. How do I get a s/w update to start in Boot Camp mode? How do I find it from the Mac side?
Thanks so much for any insights on this one
    Geoff

    Hi walking Shoe,
this is the update for Boot Camp 3.1 32-bit: [http://support.apple.com/kb/DL996]
    Its around 380MB.
You have to move it to the win side & install it in windows.
You can download the 3.2 the same way.

  • Windows 7 64bit freezing in normal mode even after rebooting to Factory Mode?

Hey guys, my Windows 7 64 bit laptop recently began permanently freezing after a few minutes
after logging into normal mode, ultimately forcing me to turn the laptop off with the power button.
It only works in safe mode :(
Ive tried restoring to an earlier date and i even rebooted to factory mode TWICE. When i booted it
to factory mode, it would work normally for about a day and then permanently freeze again for good.
I have heard that maybe this may be a cause of the newest Windows 7 update or maybe something
wrong with my BIOS...? It worked perfectly until recently. I have 2 red flags in the action center:
    1. "Turn on Windows Security Center service (important)"
    2. "Windows will install updates as scheduled (important)"
I kept having to postpone the update message over and over and then when i left the comp idle for a while,it crashed and froze AGAIN. Can anyone help me?
I have college finals due soon and desperately need my computer functioning :(
