Windows 8.1 Update 1 Video Review

I just watched a video about Windows 8.1 Update 1 by Joe Belfiore
I really have some problems with it's content.  Someone at MS should address USER requests sometime.
He says "our Start Screen is as customizable as ever" So What????? We still can't make our tiles on the Start Screen the color we want without a 3rd Party App. Really thinking of the user, aren't they? Same for the Start Button Menu,
I guess we still have to use a 3rd Party App. As far as Metro Apps in my taskbar, no thanks - I don't use the Metro apps that much anyway and I like to keep my Desktop and taskbar relatively clean. This is more of a nuisance to me than something helpful.
But, thanks, Microsoft for so many useful changes which the users wanted and requested - NOT.  Anyone else out there feel this way?????????

Hi,
Thanks very much for your feedback.
Except the one feature you mentioned, there are many useful and friendly changes in Windows 8.1 Update 1:

According to Desktop App Tiles on the Start Screen, the background color of desktop app's Start menu tile is derived from the user's chosen background color, so try changing Start menu's background color.

  • Should I let Windows 8.1 Update Nvidia Video Drivers?

Loading Windows 8.1 to a secondary hard drive in my Early-2009 Mac Pro via Boot Camp was a frustrating exercise. But after four tries it took when I found out that there were problems with the Nvidia graphics board driver. During the final successful install I turned off the automatic Windows update and let Boot Camp do the whole thing and the installation took...the machine boots nicely into Windows and has been stable so far.
In the Windows desktop system tray there appeared a notification that a Nvidia driver update was available. Based on my experience with the installation I'm reluctant to let it do that update.
I also get a notification that there is a Boot Camp driver update but when I click on it the browser simply goes to the Boot Camp page but there's no indication of WHAT driver is supposed to be updated.
So my question is - once I have a nice stable installation should I let Windows update this driver in particular and for that matter the normal system type updates (I'm guessing yes to the latter). Does the Boot Camp software on the Windows side take care of this kind of thing? I can't find anything that documents this issue; there's lots of discussions of how to install but not much about maintenance afterwards.
    Thanks in advance!

Well I guess I answered my own question…it’s NOT safe to let Windows update its system software.  My Windows 8.1 installation was (operative word "was") stable until I let windows updates do their thing and after installing 41 “Important” updates and a restart I received the infamous "Error_System_Thread_Execution_Not_Handled" message.  After two restarts the system went into automatic repair mode and thankfully uninstalled the 41 updates and the system returned to normal operation.
The original issue was a video driver conflict of some sort which was resolved by turning off Windows automatic updates during installation and letting Boot Camp install the proper drivers.
Can anyone explain in simple terms the relationship between Boot Camp driver updates and Windows system updates?  I’m unable to update my Windows software because when I do so it breaks the system.  There must be a way to select “safe” updates otherwise Windows will always remain at the state it’s in w/o updates.
Someone must have cracked this code; I just can’t find any evidence of it.

In Windows 8.1 Premiere Pro video imported clips shows up black screen in Source & Work space. Everything is updated on my PC. They say it could have been a Windows update? Is anyone else having this problem and found a solution any suggestions.. Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your help. I finally was able to contact someone from Adobe on line.. It took about 1 hour on hold but I finally won the lotto...Lol. Pr.. /Project/Project Settings/General/ I had the (Mercury Playback Engine GPU Accelerated (CUDA) and not the (Mercury Playback Engine Software Only) It only took 1 second for Adobe to figure it out...Lol.
Although I have a high rated Nvidia card that did handle the software for some time after a hack, I believe a Windows update may have altered my Premiere Pro CS6 settings.
Video card is Geforce Nvidia GTX 765M non compatible with (Mercury Playback Engine GPU Accelerated (CUDA). Thank Ronin Edits and cvid01

  • Windows 8.1 Update is Garbage

I tried to install the Windows 8.1 update. After 3 hours I found that I only had a blank screen with no keyboard or mouse response. I called into tech support at Microsoft and after waiting and waiting on hold I was told that it might be a video
driver issue. Meantime, I now have a machine that can no long boot. After several reboots and hitting F8 constantly I was able to get the machine to restore the original operating system, Windows 8 Pro. Then I found out that it did something to 2 of my usb
ports that now no longer work. I have 3 ports on my Dell XPS 15 and only one of them works now. I cannot find any errors or anyway to reinitialize the 2 ports. Any suggestions? I should have never tried to run this upgrade what a complete waste of time, and
what a complete piece of crap update. Do Not install this update!!!!

There seems to be an ongoing theme:  People who are comfortable with undertaking in-depth reconfiguration of their operating system and can rely on their large accumulated base of knowledge from past releases can get Windows 8 to
    work.
For me Win 8.1 - the fresh install I mentioned up above - is still working every bit as solidly as Windows 7 did for me:  no crashes, no glitches.  I give it hard daily serious desktop use.  Last bootup
was more than a week ago.  So far the longest stretch I've gone between reboots mandated by Windows Updates or software installs has been 17 days.  It's never crashed.
But I'm under no misconception, even though I've written a book on how to do it,
that Windows 8.1 is an easy system for the masses to use.  With 38 years computer engineering experience I can tell you honestly that it taxed me to my limits to turn it into something with which I can get my work done.  Windows 7
took some skill as well to get running right, but not nearly as much as Windows 8.
Meanwhile, Microsoft does things like not even bother to document it (try clicking a link in an event log dialog, for example).  There comes a price for reducing support:  Fewer people get it to work well for them.  Fewer people can write
good drivers for it.  Fewer people can use it.
Those who know what they're doing worry that Microsoft has lost the very ability to continue to engineer Windows at the professional level.  This version certainly doesn't do
anything better than its predecessor to make it worth putting up with all the negative changes.

  • Unable to install SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDb on Windows 8.1 Update 1

Apologies if this is not the right place or this has been posted before (I looked and didn't find anything)
I am unable to install SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDb on Windows 8.1 Update 1, as I get an 'Operating System not Supported' error message right away.
What can I do to get this working?

    Hi Zgreve,
    Usually, from
hardware and software requirements for installing SQL Server 2014, we can install SQL Server Express version on the Windows 8.1. For more information, see:
    Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express.
Before you install SQL Server 2014 Express version, you should ensure installing the .NET Framework 4, then run as administrator for the SQL Server setup.exe again.

  • IDT High Definition (HD) Audio Driver problem after windows 8.1 update 1.

Hello. I have HP Probook 4730s. After I installed Windows 8.1 update 1 the sound driver stopped working properly. When I want to play some music, video or even system sounds, sound appears after 1-2 minutes. At that time HDD usage is 100% cause of windows audio device graph isolation. I’ve installed that IDT High Definition (HD) Audio Driver from HP’s driver support site, but that’s not working. As I see in device manager driver’s release date is 24.10.2012. I think, it’s too old for Windows 8.1. Can you help me? Is there any other newer version of that sound driver? Also I’m sending two pictures where are HDD usage and driver release date.

  • PlayReady failure with specific OS version of Windows 8.1 Update

    Hello,
I'm observing a failure in my app during Smooth Streaming video playback using PlayReady DRM. The app is a WinJS Universal App solution for Windows Store and Windows Phone, using the latest updates for Visual Studio 2013, Update 4.
So far, the failure is limited to one specific version of the Windows 8.1 Update. I have two identical devices, both retail versions of the phone, that demonstrate this issue. Note, these same phones that fail with PlayReady can successfully
    stream unprotected Smooth Streaming content.
My other five Windows Phone devices, with different OS version numbers, do not demonstrate the failure with the identical app installed. Therefore, I suspect the OS version may be the cause.
    Failure description:
When I attempt to stream PlayReady protected Smooth Streaming video, the player initializes the media player and the MediaProtectionManager, but then displays the error state (The video failed to play. Try again.) immediately, and the following message is

    Hello,
0x887A0004 equates to DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED. This error is usually generated when you are trying to use Direct3D features that are not supported. Different devices support different D3D features since they contain different video hardware. It is possible
that a hardware feature that is required by the license is not supported in the hardware / driver of the device. I would recommend that you check the license and make sure that it does not contain any hardware specific requirements such as HDCP.
In other words try playing content with the least restrictive license and see if it works for you.
    I hope this helps,
    James

  • Windows 8.1 - Update consideration, resources, and known issues

This community KB article is being consolidated to help Lenovo customers who are early adopters of the Windows 8.1 update.  This article will be frequently updated to include information on recommendation on issues that have been reported and are currently being addressed by Lenovo product teams.   It is recommended that a backup of all data be made prior to starting the Windows 8.1 update.
Official Lenovo Windows 8 and 8.1 Support resources - list of officially supported systems, information on license keys, activation, upgrade / downgrade rights and more.
Update Drivers before upgrading to Windows 8.1. At this time Lenovo recommends that customers who are planning to install the Windows 8.1 update, first update to the latest version of device drivers and BIOS on the Lenovo support site and apply Windows updates.   Lenovo customers who are using ThinkPad, ThinkStation, ThinkCentre systems may elect to use the System Update to accomplish the Lenovo driver updates before updating to Windows 8.1.  System update 5.03 should be used.  If system update is downlevel, it should first update itself to version 5.03.  Windows 8.1 drivers are being packaged and made available for automated install through System Update; therefore initially a limited number of 8.1 updates may be reported through System update.   Updated drivers can still be installed manually by downloading from the support site.  Lenovo is currently working on the release and availability of Windows 8.1 drivers through system update.
Not finding 8.1 drivers for officially supported models on the Lenovo support site?  The driver list for some systems ( Helix for example) currently reflect a mix of drivers for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.  The Windows 8 drivers should work and have been tested, and compatibility designations are being revised to clearly reflect compatibility with Windows 8.1.  This updating of descriptions is expected to complete in early November
SOLVED -SecureBoot advisory message appears in lower right corner of the screen after updating to Windows 8.1.  This appears to occur if SecureBoot was not enabled when the update was installed.  This community article may help resolve the issue. Microsoft has released an official solution here
Windows 8.1 update is not listed in the Microsoft Store.   There are certain prerequisites that must be installed before the Windows 8.1 update will be installed.   Be sure to run Windows update and install all updates.  Reboot according to instructions, then re-launch the Windows Store and select Microsoft Windows 8.1 update.  For additional information on updating from the Microsoft Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8.1 click here.  If the Windows 8.1 update is still not available, please visit support.microsoft.com
Windows 8.1 update fails with an error code. Try to refresh and ensure all Windows updates have been applied.  If a backup of all data has already been made, customers may elect to reset back to factory, perform all Windows updates, update Lenovo drivers, and then attempt the Windows 8.1 update again.  Please note: Reset back to factory will wipe out all data.
SOLVED - Black Screen with flashing pointer after install on some hybrid graphics equipped  systems , S440/540, T430/530    W530 could potentially be affected.   This issue has been addressed and Windows 8.1 updates on these models conducted after 10/29/13 should proceed normally.  A Lenovo support tip for S series has been released to assist any previously affected customers. Another tip for T430/530 and W530 series is available,  too.

I have a z580 Ideapad that came with Windows 8.0. Some materials on the Lenovo site indicate that this laptop should not be updated to Windows 8.1 due to provides with the video driver, other materials indicate that it is OK. Has the video driver issue been resolved? Are there other Windows 8.1 upgrade issues? Maybe I should avoid problems and just stay with WIndows 8.0.

Server (to which I am connected): MacMini (Late 2012) 10.8.3,
    Computers (with whom I am connected): MBP 2008 10.8.3, iMac 2011 10.8.3.
After connecting I open any Finder window and try to select files with the mouse (or Command-A). The window is not updated. If you move the window on the desktop, it is updated. All these actions are performed without the monitor connected to the server.
If you connect an external monitor, so no problem. When connected to the monitor to send the image looks much smoother.
This problem does not occur if the map files in the list view. The problem is present, if the map as icons.
Tried to restart the server - did not help.
Tried to install Combo update 10.8.3 - did not help.
The problem occurred suddenly, it seems after I added the video in iTunes. (That is up to the challenge I did not install any software or not an administrator password).
    How to fix it?
    Here's a short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtG1t6q9eFI
Also there is a server MacMini 2010 (10.6.8) - there are no such problems.

  • Serious Windows Crash when updating 5G iPod

About halfway through updating the videos on my 5th gen iPod, windows displays a blue screen saying: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your system". Then my computer turns off. When I plug my iPod in again, there is a lot less space available then when i plugged it in the first time, so clearly the videos ARE being copied. However, I cannot access them from my iPod. Also, the space getting used up is catergorized as 'other', rather than 'videos' in the iPod bar at the bottom of iTunes. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and is there any way to fix it??

    hi Ellent!
hmmm. if you're getting that error message under those circumstances, let's try getting a crash log to the Discussions Hosts, so they can throw it over the fence to the Apple engineers, so they can have a look at it.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
plug the ipod in, collect the crash log, and send it to a discussions host
    in the email:
    (1) let them know the precise version number of itunes that you're using. (go into your "Help > About iTunes" to doublecheck.)
    (2) let them know the precise version of the ipod updater you're using.
    (3) include the URL to this thread so that whoever gets the email has some context, but also explicitly mention that you're getting this when you plug in the ipod.

  • Old critical problem is actual for Windows 8.1 Update and Windows 10 TP

    Hello,
my app is in the Windows Store 2 years and all 2 years I am getting reviews with 1 stars with complaining about cache size, which can be 10-30Gb... I have reported about this problem to Microsoft Support at October 2013, but problem is not solved in Windows
8.1 Update and it is amazing... I reproduced problem on Windows 10 TP. More details about problem in my old topic https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/ru-RU/0a5d2822-9a3f-48ef-a30e-e8826e76b5b5/critical-problem-still-exists?forum=winappswithcsharp
Big files with size more than 5Mb are stored and are not deleted, so information in last message is not right.
Is it so difficult problem to resolve? Please enable option for Windows store apps co they can delete their cache manually. If problem is not resolved in Windows 10 final release, I will write about it to all major IT magazines, because problem is very critical
and AFFECT ALL APPS from Windows Store.
sorry for my English, thank you.

    Hello,
Keep in mind that the current cache size limit (W8.1) is 95% of free space or 4 GB whatever is smaller. 200 MB is not very large. Do you see the cache reach a size of greater than 4 GB?
    -James
Windows SDK Technologies - Microsoft Developer Services - http://blogs.msdn.com/mediasdkstuff/
yes, my users report about 10-30Gb size, also for my radio app I do not see any reasons to store radio stream cache even 100Mb, because it is absolutely unnecessary. I think 4 Gb for cache on Windows tablets with 32 Gb SSD is too big. Also users think
what it is my trouble that app generates big .dat files, and they think I do not see their reviews and do not do anything to solve problem, it makes me very unhappy.

When I connect my laptop to the TV, the video comes out fine, but the audio for the TV does not show up in playback devices. It worked fine with windows 8, but after the windows 8.1 update it stopped.
I have tried updating realtek drivers, but it still doesn't show up. updating other drivers also doesn't work. plugging the cable into the computer then booting it up also doesn't work like it did for other people. This is really making me mad... any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried assigning HDMI one on audio tab as default and see if sound will come out to tv? if so then that was the problem.

  • Video review making questions

Just wondering if someone could answer this for me please?
I am wanting to get into video production and editing.
Basically I am wanting to record video reviews of different things.
I am wanting to purchase a USB microphone to use on my iMac.
I will be shortly be replacing my current camera with the Panasonic dmc-fz200 camera which has a video recording capability along with a built in microphone for recording the audio. Although from what I've heard, the audio isn't very good, hence the reason I want to use a USB microphone.
    My thinking is this:
I am wanting to record the video review, then get this video off of the camera's SD card and into Final Cut Pro. Once in there I want to delete the audio track that my Panasonic dmc-fz200 has recorded.
I believe that it's possible with Final Cut Pro to record an audio track at the same time as the video would be playing in Final Cut Pro. Now, obviously the audio would need to be (for want of a better word) in sync or keep up with the action that was going on in the video. I was wondering if the audio commentary was either getting a little ahead or behind of what was going on in the video, is it possible to slow the video down or speed it up so that both the audio and the video are keeping up with each other?
Presently I record tech guides on doing various things on the iPhone and iPad with the built in mic on the iMac, along with two other applications I use (Reflector and Screenflow).
Doing this with these applications when I get a USB microphone should be a simpler task than the above has its possible to tell Screenflow which microphone to use (i.e built in microphone or an external microphone) so in this scenario, the audio and video would be both recorded at the same time and I wouldn't have any issues with video and audio not been in sync/getting ahead/behind one and other. So I shouldn't have any of the problems I have mentioned above with using my Panasonic dmc-fz200 camera.

I was going to edit my original post to see if I can make myself more clear, but I cannot edit it. So instead I've added/altered some of what I wrote in my originally:
I am wanting to get into video production and editing. Basically I am wanting to record video reviews of different things that I own.
I am also wanting to purchase a USB microphone to use on my iMac.
I will be shortly be replacing my current camera with the Panasonic dmc-fz200 camera which has a video recording capability along with a built in microphone for recording the audio. Although from what I've heard online, the audio isn't very good, hence the reason I want to use a USB microphone.
    My thinking is this:
I am wanting to record the video review, then get the video off of the camera's SD card and into Final Cut Pro. Once in there I want to delete the audio track that my Panasonic dmc-fz200 has recorded.
I believe that it's possible with Final Cut Pro to record an audio track (by going to the Record Audio option in the Window menu) at the same time as the video would be playing in Final Cut Pro.
Now, obviously the audio would need to be (for want of a better word) in sync or keep up with the action that was going on in the video. To try and clarify. If I were pointing at some part or button in the video (of what I was reviewing). I would obviously need to be at that point in my audio commentary that I would be recording.
I was wondering if the audio commentary that I was recording was either getting a little ahead or behind of what was going on in the video, is it possible to slow the video down or speed it up so that both the audio and the video are keeping up with each other?
Presently I record tech guides on my iMac on doing various things on the iPhone and iPad with the built in mic on the iMac, along with two other applications I use (Reflector and Screenflow).
Doing this with these two applications when I get a USB microphone should be a simpler task than doing the video reviews recording with the Panasonic camera, Final Cut Pro, has its possible to tell Screenflow which microphone to use prior to beginning recording (i.e built in microphone or an external microphone) and also Screenflow allows me to edit the video too. So in this scenario, the audio and video would be both recorded at the same time and I wouldn't have any issues with video and audio not been in sync/getting ahead/behind one and other. So I shouldn't have any of the problems I have mentioned above with using my Panasonic dmc-fz200 camera.
