Windows 8.1 update crashes my Lenovo Yoga13

After updating to Windows 8.1, my PC is unable to restart with the following message displayed:
1) Preparing automatic repair
2) Diagnosing your PC
3) Your PC did not start correctly
Here I am given 2 options:
a) Restart
b) Advanced Options.
Option (a) will keep me in the same loop. I have tried most of the options in (b) but nothing works out. The only extra clue I got is when I go to Startup Settings and select option 9)" Disable automatic restart after failure" from which an additional message was displayed:
error: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Pleasessss helpppp coz I can't even access to the safe mode.

Is there any other options other than going thru the system recovery? I do not want to lose any files I had saved nor do I know how to do a data backup at this critical stage.

  • Windows 8.1 update problem on LENOVO Y510P

    Hey guys,
Can't find anything similar to my problem and exhausted my options on this, so decided to ask. If it has been answered I couldn't find, so please point me out on the right direction.
    Back history:
    Have a lenovo y510p
Bought caddy & SSD drive and installed it onto laptop
Couldn't find a good doc about how to proced so my idea was
    1-restore factory settings,
2-Copied the Windows C: partition and the SYSTEM_DRV partition to the SSD using Macrium reflect
3-Went on the BIOS boot order and set the SSD to boot first.
4-Voila, works fine, boots C: on the SSD and it's super fast.
    Problem:
Windows 8.1 update can't install on C:. Bummer
I receive a notification saying that I can update to windows 8.1, which I want to do.
    1 Hit ok to download,
2 it starts the update process,
    3 finishes installing,
4 says it needs to restart
5-RESTARTS TO THE OLD DRIVE, changing the boot order on the BIOS (**bleep**???)
I then check that nothing was installed even on the old drive, proceed to shut down computer, change boot order back to SSD drive, start windows and receive a message that it couldn't be installed and it has reverted the installation.
    Has anyone ever experienced that?
    My idea now is to
    Back up my computer again
Restore factory settings (on old drive)
Install windows 8.1 to old drive
    Clone windows partition over
Change BIOS to boot up on SSD.
HOWEVER my question is: What happens when I want to install Windows 10 ? Do you think I'll face the same issue?
Should I somehow format the old drive's windows partition to prevent this from happening ?
Any help is welcome and I thank you all in advance,
    Cheers

Did you erase the recovery partition on the old drive? My best guess is to create recovery discs or thumbdrive take the old drive out and put the new drive in and use the discs or thumbdrive to restore the system. Then run the updates and then copy your personal information from the old disc to the new disc.
As for Windows 10, I do not know if they are going to be doing a clean install with the update to windows 10 or doing an in place update so it is hard to know what problems you will encounter.

  • Windows 8 critical update crashed lost browser and all history and tabs how do i get old browser

Install Windows 8 Critical update; computer crashed and lost everything; Microsoft OS will not let me back into programs, keeps blocking me and gives me a temp password so I can still use PC. Had to reinstall FIREFOX, can't recover old browser and my very important tab. I can't get to backup file and Microsoft is unable to fix the problem, so I am starting from scratch. Tried to use Profile information but it contains only my current profile.
    Hope you can help.

If you do not have the original profile folder and its contents, or some backup of that; there is not anything we can do to help.
*Do you have any forms of backup at all ?
*Did you sync with another device ?
I am assuming the original hard drive has been reformatted, or is totally unusable.

  • Windows 8.1 - Update consideration, resources, and known issues

This community KB article is being consolidated to help Lenovo customers who are early adopters of the Windows 8.1 update.  This article will be frequently updated to include information on recommendation on issues that have been reported and are currently being addressed by Lenovo product teams.   It is recommended that a backup of all data be made prior to starting the Windows 8.1 update.
Official Lenovo Windows 8 and 8.1 Support resources - list of officially supported systems, information on license keys, activation, upgrade / downgrade rights and more.
Update Drivers before upgrading to Windows 8.1. At this time Lenovo recommends that customers who are planning to install the Windows 8.1 update, first update to the latest version of device drivers and BIOS on the Lenovo support site and apply Windows updates.   Lenovo customers who are using ThinkPad, ThinkStation, ThinkCentre systems may elect to use the System Update to accomplish the Lenovo driver updates before updating to Windows 8.1.  System update 5.03 should be used.  If system update is downlevel, it should first update itself to version 5.03.  Windows 8.1 drivers are being packaged and made available for automated install through System Update; therefore initially a limited number of 8.1 updates may be reported through System update.   Updated drivers can still be installed manually by downloading from the support site.  Lenovo is currently working on the release and availability of Windows 8.1 drivers through system update.
Not finding 8.1 drivers for officially supported models on the Lenovo support site?  The driver list for some systems ( Helix for example) currently reflect a mix of drivers for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.  The Windows 8 drivers should work and have been tested, and compatibility designations are being revised to clearly reflect compatibility with Windows 8.1.  This updating of descriptions is expected to complete in early November
SOLVED -SecureBoot advisory message appears in lower right corner of the screen after updating to Windows 8.1.  This appears to occur if SecureBoot was not enabled when the update was installed.  This community article may help resolve the issue. Microsoft has released an official solution here
Windows 8.1 update is not listed in the Microsoft Store.   There are certain prerequisites that must be installed before the Windows 8.1 update will be installed.   Be sure to run Windows update and install all updates.  Reboot according to instructions, then re-launch the Windows Store and select Microsoft Windows 8.1 update.  For additional information on updating from the Microsoft Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8.1 click here.  If the Windows 8.1 update is still not available, please visit support.microsoft.com
Windows 8.1 update fails with an error code. Try to refresh and ensure all Windows updates have been applied.  If a backup of all data has already been made, customers may elect to reset back to factory, perform all Windows updates, update Lenovo drivers, and then attempt the Windows 8.1 update again.  Please note: Reset back to factory will wipe out all data.
SOLVED - Black Screen with flashing pointer after install on some hybrid graphics equipped  systems , S440/540, T430/530    W530 could potentially be affected.   This issue has been addressed and Windows 8.1 updates on these models conducted after 10/29/13 should proceed normally.  A Lenovo support tip for S series has been released to assist any previously affected customers. Another tip for T430/530 and W530 series is available,  too.

I have a z580 Ideapad that came with Windows 8.0. Some materials on the Lenovo site indicate that this laptop should not be updated to Windows 8.1 due to provides with the video driver, other materials indicate that it is OK. Has the video driver issue been resolved? Are there other Windows 8.1 upgrade issues? Maybe I should avoid problems and just stay with WIndows 8.0.

    hi alidogan,
    Welcome to the Forums.
    Can you try the following:
    1. Follow this guide on how to perform a clean boot
    2. Temporarily disable your antivirus software and install Windows 8.1 Update (KB291935)
    Note:
Ensure you install KB2919442 first as this is a prerequisite for the Windows 8.1 Update (KB291935).

  • After Windows 8.1 update Lenovo L420 has half the WLAN speed

After the Windows 8.1 update my L420 WLan only works with 55 MBit max. In Windows 8.0 it was between 120 and 150 Mbit. I have the 1x1 11b/g/n W-LAN-PCI-Express-Half-Mini-Card-Adapter. Lenovo L420 is 7854-4LG.
The WLAN driver is a Microsoft driver as in Windows 8 but a newer version.
How can I get the Windows 8 driver back?
Why doesn't provide Lenovo a driver as with Windows 7?
Is Lenovo not testing any of their Laptops for compatibility?
    Any help?

    Go to Solution.

I found a solution in the meantime: I loaded  the driver for the RTL8188CE chipset from the REALTEK site.
Now I'm back between 120 and 150 MBit.

In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the
    %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and
all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip
containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Prefered sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers.
    4 (optional): The
type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps
in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains much more
information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps
are much larger in size due to containing
much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUp Utilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon
    use.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type
%systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key +
Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'.
    3. Windows key +
Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check
    that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it
and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.

    Hi
No Need to panic there some other users who are facing similar issues after doing the windows update.
What you can do is turn of windows update for some time so that the update does not go through again and Microsoft will have a fix patch or update very soon. You can Turn On windows updates after a week or 15 days by that time Microsoft would have updated a patch on the update.

I am running into this same exact problem. Can you guys provide exact instructions (I'm a computer layman) on how to change the scaling so that things look like they were before?
Everything is fuzzy for me even though I have the highest resolution as always. This happened exactly when I did the new Windows 8.1 update.

  • Windows 8.1 Update is Garbage

I tried to install the Windows 8.1 update. After 3 hours I found that I only had a blank screen with no keyboard or mouse response. I called into tech support at Microsoft and after waiting and waiting on hold I was told that it might be a video
driver issue. Meantime, I now have a machine that can no long boot. After several reboots and hitting F8 constantly I was able to get the machine to restore the original operating system, Windows 8 Pro. Then I found out that it did something to 2 of my usb
ports that now no longer work. I have 3 ports on my Dell XPS 15 and only one of them works now. I cannot find any errors or anyway to reinitialize the 2 ports. Any suggestions? I should have never tried to run this upgrade what a complete waste of time, and
what a complete piece of crap update. Do Not install this update!!!!

There seems to be an ongoing theme:  People who are comfortable with undertaking in-depth reconfiguration of their operating system and can rely on their large accumulated base of knowledge from past releases can get Windows 8 to
    work.
For me Win 8.1 - the fresh install I mentioned up above - is still working every bit as solidly as Windows 7 did for me:  no crashes, no glitches.  I give it hard daily serious desktop use.  Last bootup
was more than a week ago.  So far the longest stretch I've gone between reboots mandated by Windows Updates or software installs has been 17 days.  It's never crashed.
But I'm under no misconception, even though I've written a book on how to do it,
that Windows 8.1 is an easy system for the masses to use.  With 38 years computer engineering experience I can tell you honestly that it taxed me to my limits to turn it into something with which I can get my work done.  Windows 7
took some skill as well to get running right, but not nearly as much as Windows 8.
Meanwhile, Microsoft does things like not even bother to document it (try clicking a link in an event log dialog, for example).  There comes a price for reducing support:  Fewer people get it to work well for them.  Fewer people can write
good drivers for it.  Fewer people can use it.
Those who know what they're doing worry that Microsoft has lost the very ability to continue to engineer Windows at the professional level.  This version certainly doesn't do
anything better than its predecessor to make it worth putting up with all the negative changes.

  • I just downloaded the latest version of itunes for Windows and now itunes crashes every time i launch it

I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes for Windows and now iTunes crashes everytime I launch it.  I have tried re-downloading and selecting Repair with no luck.  Any suggestions?
    thanks

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

  • Windows 8.1 update - S440 ThinkPad black screen with flickering cursor.

    Hello,
Sorry if this is answered elsewhere.
I have an S440. I've had it for one week. Two days ago I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store. Since then, when I start up the computer, it doesn't even taken me to the 'sign in' screen. There's just a black screen. When I move the cursor, it briefly appears, flickers, then disappears again.
I understand this is an issue with the graphics drivers. So I ran Windows in safemode and disabled Intel R HD Graphics family and AMD Radeon HD  8600 series graphics drivers.
This, unfortunately, hasn't fixed the problem. It still boots to a black screen with an occasionally flickering cursor. I'm currently running in safemode.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hi
I also have an S440 and have tried 3 times to update laptop without success including updating all drivers and updates inc those from Lenovo.
Is there a fix for this? Is this an AMD issue?
My laptop is also very new and cannot believe it is incompatible with windows 8.1.
Tried the compatibility checker with Windows 8.1and it didn't report any problems.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq

I do not suppose the problem is related to Lenovo in any way, but maybe someone else had the same issue.
I am not sure what those mean and searching for 0x80070490 does not show useful results. I have tried the recommendation from:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044
But after running both DISM commands multiple times, it does not solve the issue. Also, I am wondering if the "Polish ESD Bundle Parent" is just the first part that was checked or if this may be specific to Polish language?
I tried changing the default language for my user and for login screen + new users to English, but that did not help.

Just an update, in case someone else comes across this issue.
I decided to reset my laptop to factory settings (using "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" from settings).
After that, I performed all the updates of both Lenovo and Windows updates. Then I was able to update to Windows 8.1.
I did not find a way to resolve it without full reinstallation.

I don't recall installing any 3rd parth USB drivers and this comptuer is an older Lenovo ThinkCenter that only has USB 2 ports.
I used devcon driverfiles *  > hardware.txt to export all of the hardware and driver files in use on my system and did not find any reference to
    usbxhci.inf
    Any suggestions ?
    Naim

    Thank you for the link.
I tried the windows upate repair but that did not fix the issue. I also manualy run the sfc /scannow and now errors were found
I found that the driver updates are logged in file setupapi.dev.log,  Where I can see more errors that relate to usbxhci.inf, this occurs at the same time as the cbs.log errors.
