Windows 8.1 windows updates not actually installing

I am running Windows 8.1 and no matter how many time I check for updates and install the updates they never really install but there is no errors it says updates installed.
I am stuck on update KB2990967 and KB3063843
I keep installing them and nothing happens besides when I restart and check for updates it says those are my needed updates.

  • Windows Updates won't install - Error 0x80072EFD

    Question
Windows Updates won’t install.  I’m receiving Error 0x80072EFD.  What can I do to solve this?
    Answer
This particular error means that your computer was not able to connect to the Internet when it tried to install updates.  First, check your Internet connection and then try again. If that doesn’t work, try the methods below.
Method A: Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on, and temporarily disable third-party firewalls
Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.
To complete this method, follow these steps.
Step 1: Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on
To open Windows Firewall, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel. In the search box, type firewall, and then click Windows Firewall.
Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
Click On (recommended), and then click OK.
Step 2: Temporarily disable third-party firewalls
Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then, under System and Security, click Review your computer's status.
Click the arrow button next to Security to expand the section.
Under Firewall, read the firewall status note. This information will indicate which, if any, firewall is installed and whether the firewall is turned on. For example, for ZoneAlarm, the notice will say ZoneAlarm Firewall is currently ON.
Open the third-party firewall application that is listed in the firewall status note, and temporarily disable the firewall. If necessary, refer to the firewall application documentation, or contact the application vendor for more information about how to temporarily disable the application.
Step 3: Try to install the updates again
If this method resolved your issue, follow the steps in Method B, step 2 to re-enable your third-party firewall. You might want to also check for and install any necessary updates to your third-party firewall.
If this method did not resolve your issue, continue with Method B.
Method B: Temporarily disable third-party antivirus software
Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.
Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method A, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.
Step 1: Locate and temporarily disable your third-party antivirus software
Note Windows does not detect all antivirus software, and some antivirus software doesn't report its status to Windows. If your antivirus software is not displayed in Windows Security Center, and you're not sure how to find it, try any of the following:
Look for the antivirus software in the list of programs on the Start menu.
Type the name of the software or the publisher in the Search box on the Start menu.
Look for the software in Action Center:
Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then, under System and Security, click Review your computer's status.
Click the arrow button next to Security to expand the section.
If Windows can detect your antivirus software, it will be listed under Virus protection.
If the software is turned on, check the Help documentation that was included with the software for information about how to disable it.
Note You may have to look in the application documentation to determine how to do this.
Step 2: Check for Windows Updates
As soon as the antivirus software is temporarily disabled, visit the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site again, and try to download and install updates.
If this method resolved your issue, and you were able to install the updates successfully, you should re-enable your third-party antivirus software.
If this method did not resolve your issue, continue with Method C.
Method C: Disable software accelerator programs
Disable any software accelerator programs that may be running. Some examples of these programs are file download accelerators and Internet speed accelerators.
Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method B, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.
Step 1: Disable software accelerator programs
To do this, select from the following options:
See the documentation that was included with the program.
View the Help files for your program.
Contact the program vendor. For information about how to contact the program vendor, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/vendors
    Step 2: Install Updates
As soon as the software accelerator program is disabled, visit the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site again, and try to download and install updates.
If this method resolved your issue, you should enable the software accelerator programs that you disabled in Step 1.
If this method did not resolve your issue, continue with Method E.
Method D: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list
Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method A, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.
To add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list, follow these steps:
    Start Windows Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Note If you are using Internet Explorer 7, and the menu is not available, press the ALT key on your keyboard to access the Internet Explorer Menu.
Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone check box.
In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, and then click Add after you type each address:
    http://update.microsoft.com
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    Click OK two times.
Try to install the updates again.
If this method resolved your issue and you were able to install updates successfully, you should re-enable your third-party firewall if it is still disabled. To do this, see step 2 in Method A.
For more methods and advanced troubleshooting techniques, see You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates.

Mark, I've just been through this update issue with two installations.  In my case, it seemed intertwined with authentification and indexing not working, either.    Upon a transfer of my system disk to new hardware I got hit with the issue and couldn't fix it.  Which is why I did a clean install of Win7 ultimate 64bit on my T61p.  The install (including update) worked great until I ran the intel matrix storage manager update.  This broke windows update.  If you surf the web, and include "intel rapid storage manager" or "intel matrix storage manager" and "Windows update fails", you'll see that a lot of folks feel that the intel driver (or how windows handles it) is what breaks update.  I tracked this down to a driver, iastor.sys, in windows\system32\drivers.    I was able to fix my Window Update by copying an iastor.sys from another recently built machine (should be exactly the same, but this was my wife's T510, but still Win 7 Pro 64) to overwrite the iastor.sys that the intel update changed.  To be clear: I couldn't get windows update or indexing to work.  I overwrote* the "bad" iastor.sys with one that worked on another computer.  Rebooted.  Update worked. I just wanted to point out that instead of blindly installing updates to fix problems, folks should be aware that sometimes the update is the problem. Especially as these systems are off warranty and the drivers are not being updated.  I've asked elsewhere, so let me ask here: Where is the System Interface Driver for t61p?  Not listed anywhere on site, links on the web referring to it are all broken.  Is the System Interface Driver now part of another driver program?  Thanks! Jim T61p, Win 7 Ultimate 64bit, and T510, Win 7 Pro 64bit

  • Windows Updates not working

We are having a problem with Windows update not wanting to work with the
    filters up and running.
When I drop the filtering Windows Update from the workstations works just
fine. When I have the filters up we get an error code of Error number:
0x80072EFE from the windows update which is only identified as
ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED Some network problem or the server/proxy
    reset the socket connection.
Any ideas on what filter exceptions I need to put in BM to allow this
    traffic??
    TIA!

    Do what I did.
Installed Windows System Update Service on a Windows 2003 Server. It's free.
Then I added a rule to bypass the proxy for the WSUS server only.
So WSUS server downloads direct from MS and stores them locally
The Clients download from the WSUS Server saving on bandwidth on the
    Internet Connection
    It's another work around.
    Rgds
    Simon.

  • Windows updates not working because it extract patches on Mac partition first., Windows updates not working because it extract patches on Mac partition first.

I have installed BootCamp 5.1 and Windows updates not working because it extract files on Mac partition before installation. Is there any workaround for same ?

To replicate this issue - Try to download .net framework 4.5 from microsoft website and than run that setup on windows partition.
Before installation. it will first extract all the binaries to a other drivers, since in my case other primary drive is E which is a Mac partition so it always give me an error while extractiing and therefore setup is not able to execute propely.
Let me try to get the screen shot of error and send it here.

  • Windows updates won't install

    Hello,
I have a remote user whose Windows updates won't install. He has a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. You can bring up the update windows and start the install but, at exactly 10 seconds, it just says "Updates failed" and doesn't really give
    any more information.
I saw the Windows update service was stopped, I started it and that didn't seem to help. I also tried the update troubleshooter and that didn't do anything. I checked for malware and didn't find any, and he has plenty of disk space. I didn't see
anything in Even Viewer or Reliability Monitor either.
    What could it be?
    Thanks.
    Chris Hansen

    Hi Chris,
Firstly, please check if those Windows Update have already installed:
    1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type
Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
2.In the left pane, click View update history.
    3. Click Installed Updates at the top of the page, there check if any Windows Update installed recently.
If there is no any Windows Update installed, try to
reset the Windows Update component to check if it could resolve the issue.

    Hi Tamekia,
I am sorry to hear nothing has worked yet. I have looked up some additional information and possible solutions. Follow the steps in this document to perform a level-three uninstall, register the Windows Installer Service, and then reinstall the HP software. An uninstall and reinstall of the software deletes and overwrites any of the files that might cause the error and resets the Windows Installer. HP recommends that you download the latest software from the HP Web site to remove any files that might be causing this error.
Level-three uninstall, and register the Windows Installer Service
Note: The title of this document is not specific to the issue you are experiencing or the operating system you have, but the 3 steps and instructions are what I suggest we do to resolve the issue you are experiencing.

  • Same issue Network Discovery not working and Windows Update not working

    I've read the threads.
This is a Vista Ultimate upgrade. My OOOOH My I have clocked 8 hours
Everything was working before. I tried all of the recommended  services turning on restarting.
Also, ran into the problem of my memory being eaten. Suspected cause hibernate mode, which I had to disable. Scott Hasselman blog recommended the fix which is a cheap work around that limits machines functionality!!
I'm and IT Engineer specializing in MS product lines since Windows 1.0. MFC foundation classes etc.. What is the real problem ?
I don't have the NetBIOS over tcp/ip in my services?
I figure that the cost of my time and other individuals pays for the OS four times over. Give me a Microsoft developer subscription or something to make me happy. This is my development machine and I'm loosing time and money.
FYI, Just upgraded my second machine to Windows 8.1 OMG !!2 Hours to upgrade after the download. I loose my configuration settings. I required to have a Windows Live whatever account!!! This is not the way to compete and keep customers.
Windows XP has been by far the best deployment experience. I need a Knowledge base that gives solutions , not a troubleshooting scenario that does or does not work!!
Please , don't tell me to go and by a OEM Surface I cannot recommend this to my clients.
    Thank You

    Hi,
If it worked previously, a quick solution is to run System Restore and get back to the previous status when the issue didn’t occur.
    What is System Restore?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-is-System-Restore
When you turn on network discovery, do you get any error prompt?
Please check if you have any error message about network discovery in event viewer.
    Open Event Viewer
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-Event-Viewer
What information appears in event logs (Event Viewer)?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-information-appears-in-event-logs-Event-Viewer
Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the Error logs to a public folder and share the URLs with us.
Also, please temporarily turn off your firewall and all the security programs for a test.
As far as I know, Network discovery requires that the DNS Client, DNS Client, Network Connections, Network Location Awareness,  Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Function Discovery
Resource Publication, TCP/IP Netbios helper, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services are started and set to automatic.
You should check again if you have started all these services.
Regarding the update issue, I suggest you try the following suggestions.
    1. Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue.
    2. Open the Windows Update troubleshooter
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter
    3. Reset Windows Update components

  • Windows Updater Not Installing and Troubleshooter Wizard Is Not Working???

I am in need help desperately!
I have tried to install the Windows 7 latest update since late October 2014 and every time that I have tried it has failed, this is messing with certain programs to either not run such as my Troubleshooter,
leaving me unable to fix the issue, and making my computer to run poorly as well as when I am on Firefox unable to load pages, do downloads, watch movies & TV, or watch videos on You Tube without having to move the mouse around to keep it running and just
freeze the picture on the You Tube and Xfinity but the sound keeps playing though. I am unable to run the Troubleshooter Wizard at all; gives me an error code  0x80131018. I have gone to the forums to find a solution I tried everything possible. Such
as trying to do all the maintenance; disc clean ups, compressing files to save on space, checking the disc drives for errors, defragmenting the drives, try to use the Fix It (MicrosoftFixit.malware.RNP.1343648269423620.1.1.Run,  as well as: MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.RNP.1343648269423620.2.1.Run,
as well as:  MicrosoftFixit.wu.FISC.1341772369343897.1.1.Run,   and:  MicrosoftFixit50123) all the these would not help.
I also tried to run what information I received from viewing options from the Error Code 0x80131018 and all the HP Support Assistant and Windows Help and Support. These are some of them;  SCUDownloader,
    Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64,   HPSupportSolutionsFramework-en-11.51.0048,   HPSupportSolutionsFramework-11.51.0048,   HP CoolSense Technology - sp65424,   HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) - sp55068,
HP Power Manager Utility Software - sp55151,   HP On-Screen Display Utility - sp55152,   HP System Diagnostics UEFI - sp52407, and    Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver - sp55101. All these with running the maintenance,
I also installed Boost, also ran the scans through my Norton Security, and so much more to try and fix this problem, I just can't remember everything that I tried I have been working so hard at solving this problem since of the effect of how this Windows Updater
failing at updating and Troubleshooter not working to leaving me unable to find and fix these issues.
I am a Graphic Design Artist and I am pretty computer savvy but I am at a loss on this . If anyone has any advise on these issues please help me ASAP, I use my HP everyday and it is important for
me to have it for work purposes, concepts and so much more. My Mother got this computer for me when I graduated from college in 2012 for my graduation gift so I can do what I do.
Thank you so much for your help in trying to get this resolved without having to take it into somewhere and pay $$ that I do not have.

I recently had a similar problem - Windows 7 Ultimate. Apart from updates not installing and troubleshooters not running I started getting crashes and BSOD's
I checked that my Cryptographic services was set to auto (it was)
Press the 'Windows key" and and key "R" together   to launch the  RUN  box. Type
services.msc in the box and press Enter. It'll open Services Manager.
Scroll down to  "Cryptographic Services" in the list. It should be set to Auto ( mine was)
I then checked my Windows updates to see when the problem started
Taking the bull by the horns I deleted the last 20 updates installed.
I restarted the computer and was amazed to find the troubleshooters working ok
I downloaded the Windows updates and installed them 5 at a time checking the troubleshooter after each batch. Everything was ok .
I can only assume the troublesome update was not re-offered or the one that installed itself was corrupt.

  • Windows 8.1 Professional x64: Windows will not run Windows Update after fresh install

Greetings everyone.  I'm having a strange issue that I can't seem to figure out.  I'm developing an image with the following specs:
    Hardware:
    Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook Convertible
    Haswell i7
    8 GB RAM
    256 SSD HD
    Software:
    Windows 8.1 Professional x64
    Problem description:
After formatting and partitioning the hard drive (UEFI) with a corporate copy of Windows 8.1 x64, the laptop is booted up in Audit mode.  No OEM drivers or software is installed.  Windows is then activated to the KMS server and verified.
I then connect to a hotspot (no proxy required) and open up IE 11.  I click tools and select Windows Update.  The laptop then searches and searches for updates and never finds any.  I've let it search for over 10 hours.  The laptop never
    returns an error message.
    Troubleshooting performed:
    1.  I've tried different copies of Windows 8.1 - same result.
    2.  I've tried installing the OS with different types of media (external hd and multiple bootable USB drives) - same result.
    3.  I've disable the Windows Update service, deleted the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarted the Windows Update service and rebooted laptop - same result
    4.  I've installed this copy of Windows 8.1 on different models of laptops with no OEM drivers or software installed - same result.
    5.  I've installed all of the OEM device drivers in the correct order and ensured that the device manager is clear of bang signs - same result.
    6.  Date and time is set correctly.
Has anyone else experienced this with Windows 8.1 x64?  If I take a copy of Windows 7 x64 or 8 x64 and install it on this laptop, it updates Windows without any issues.  The problem seems to be with Windows 8.1.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Windows Update not reporting correct "Update were Installed Dates"

Hast the server running the sccm correct time and date settings?

So we just moved to SCCM 2012 R2 and just used SUP to do the windows updates.  The updates were a success, but one thing I noticed was the update screen says the last updates that were installed were on 5/21/2015, but the my update history says the last update was 7/1/2015.  Does anyone know why the dates are off?

  • Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Windows update not applicable

HELP!!! We have 3 Windows 2008 R2 servers that were updated with SP1 back in March. Last month we noticed on our Retina audit that the three servers were missing several Windows critical patches that were released after SP1 was applied. WSUS did not report
any missing patches for those three servers. When we tried to manually apply those missing patches we get the error message "This update is not applicable to your computer". After some troubleshooting we found that KB976932 (Service Pact 1) is not listed in
installed updates. However, system property shows Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise Edition. We are certain that SP1 did NOT come pre-installed. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer detected no missing patches. Microsoft System Readiness Tool CBA logs show no
errors. Ran SFC /SCANNOW and found no error also. Force install of the patches with command switch /wuforce, did not work we still get the same message patch not applicable. We compared our servers that are fully patched running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 against
the three unpatched servers and found several dll and sys file's version to be different. Those dll and sys files are also the files that would have been updated by the critical patches. The only thing different between the fully patched Windows 2008 R2 SP1
servers and the unpatch are the unpatch have no public internet access. We confirmed patches that were required prior to SP1 push are installed: KB2454826 KB2534366 KB2533552 KB976902 Confirmed: Partition with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 installed is set to "ACTIVE"
Windows Event Collector service is started Windows Modules Installer is started Uninstalling SP1 is not possible because the KB976932 is not listed and verified "not hidden" in installed updates list. Rebuilding the three servers are the very last option,
since they are critical. Other than the missing patches.... the servers are running great, we have no reported issues with the three servers. Attempt to reinstall SP1 failed after reboot, error 0X800F0826. If anyone has experience this problem and know of
    a solution please help.

    Hi,
I would like to confirm that what updates are not applicable for your three Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 servers?
Based on the current situation, please run the System Update Readiness Tool as Meinolf Weber mentioned and check the CheckSUR.persist.log for the corrupted
files. After that, please refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article for how to repair them.
Advanced guidelines for diagnosing and fixing servicing corruption

  • Windows update requesting to install Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320

I received this today when trying to manually scan for available updates via the windows update in control panel. It shows message as below. Seems that it will install the latest Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320. Will this machine able to get any patch
deployed via SCCM if the WUA is not updated to the latest version?

I can't say I've heard of any widespread issues with this version of the WUA so YMMV as always. If you do have an issue, you should contact CSS though.
As for it being pushed automatically, that's correct and is no different than past WUA agent updates. It is considered an infrastructure update and is thus automatically installed via Windows Update or WSUS regardless of your client update settings unless
you've actually disabled the WUA via group policy (not the service though) -- this includes ConfigMgr also because ConfigMgr does not in way pre-empt WSUS and leverages WSUS behind the scenes.

  • Windows Update not working on rebuilt RAID1 on Larger Drives -

Recovered an image from 320 gig drives to 500 gig drives.  Everything worked fine except both Lenovo and Windows Updates did not work.  Subsequently noticed that this was also true on the 320s and it happened a day or two before I imaged it (them).  Downloaded and installed the latest Lenovo System Update application and that cured both problems on the 320s but only cured the Lenovo updates problem on the 500s.  I've tried a few things written on the web and also tried to let the Windows online validation tool run but I've tried it twice but it doesn't end.  The last time it ran for over 1.5 hours without any resolution.  It just keeps spinning.
This is actually another opportunity generated from what I was doing in the post "How to Migrate a Raid1 to larger drives without having to rebuild on a W700?" but this seems like a different, though related, subject so I started a new post.  If someone thinks it best to combine them please do.
How can I get Windows Update to update?
    Geophyte1

I finally resorted to doing a fresh install and that solvesd the activation problem.

  • Windows update not working on new Dell Inspiron 7000 (7537)

I currently have Windows 8 on my new dell inspiron (actually refurbished) 7000.  Only things I've done since getting the computer:  I removed McAfee and turned on Windows defender (which also won't update).  Windows update shows about 93 updates
but when I hit install it says it is downloading by never moves past 0%.  I used the auto fix that Microsoft offers for windows update to no avail.  Not sure what to do now.

    Hi,
    I agree with Milos.
