Windows 8.1 won't boot up

My HP ENVY 15-jo11dx was downloading current updates for the built in camera but having problems with the download. Suddenly my computer rebooted but Windows 8.1 would not boot. Waited over 3 hours while hard drive lite stayed on. Nothing came on screen. Black screen of Death???
Unplugged power and battery because computer would not reboot. Started up and nothing but HP screen at startup. No Windows. Unplugged and restarted again except with esc. key and power button. Tried every option available on screens and all I could get was "Partition Not Found." Tried to restore to prevous date but nothing. I just got this computer in the first part of December.
I really love this coputer because it so fast and powerful. But right now it is a very costly paper weight. Can I please get a recovery disk to boot up my PC????
Currently I hve to fall back on my Apple to post and recieve messages. Please help.

Hi Ryan44,
Thank you for your post, I will do my best to assist you!
I understand that after upgrading to Windows 8.1, you received an error and clicked OK to terminate the program. Once you did, the screen flickered in and out. You did a   shut down and restarted the  notebook, but it has been stuck on Windows Repair for 12 hours.
I would try a forced reset first.Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset
If this did not help, I  suggest you do a recovery and then retry the upgrade as the repair does not seem to be working. Here is some documentation to assist you with this process.
Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).
During this process you will receive a prompt to backup your personal files. If you have not done a backup yet, I suggest you do one now to prevent data loss.
Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8).
Here another one to aid with updating to Windows 8.1 again.
Updating Windows 8 to 8.1
I hope this helped.

IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot into Mac OS lion?

    Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion. Actually that was not the problem, because I had the Mcintosh drive set as my boot drive. The answer was that my Lion Os got somehow corrupted and I had to reinstalll Lion. This was all after I discussed the situation with the Apple Support people.

  • Windows 8 RTM won't boot on W520

Hi, I have the W520 (configuration bellow). When I install Windows 8 as a dual boot along with Windows 7, the installation process is fine, the system starts and everything seems to work until the first reboot. Then the boot process freezes shortly after displaying the Windows logo (usually even before displaying the spinning circle under the logo) and I have to power off and start again. In some cases I have to repeat that several times until I am able to boot to Windows again. My BIOS used to be set to "UEFI first" boot option which according to some other thread was a cause of this issue. Unfortunately when I changed that to "UEFI only" the problem is still there. What am I supposed to do to resolve that? Thanks in advance.
    Lenovo ThinkPad W520 15.6" 1920x1080, UEFI 1.42, Intel Core i7-2820QM 2.3GHz, Intel HD3000 + nVidia Quadro 2000M 2GB, Kingston PNP 16GB (4x4GB) 1600MHz RAM, Crucial m4 040H 256GB SSD, Lenovo TP Drive Adapter UltraBay 12,7mm + WD Blue 1TB 5400rpm HDD, Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN, Gobi 3000, Lenovo TP Port Mini Dock Plus Series 3, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Well, I had similar issues and managed to overcome them by the steps outlined below.
The BIOS version I have is 1.39 - though I started out with 1.36 on my Windows 8 install.
I would highly recommend having just the Discrete option in the BIOS and have the OS detection of Optimus mode to "Disabled". The Intel HD driver and NVidia driver in Optimus mode resulted in bluescreens and choosing Discrete graphics + Optimus OS Detection to Disabled in the BIOS resulted in much more stable system.
Here comes the most important part: for some reason, when you enabled Virtualization's Directed IO, Windows 8 will not start up with Discrete graphics. Just to be clear, you can enable virtualization, just not the Directed IO.
Maybe you can post back if this was your problem?
    -krish
PS: I've not yet investigated the performance impact of not using Directed IO - as I use virtualization a lot (run 5-6 VMs at a time). But given I have dual SSDs (non-RAID) and this is a laptop, not a machine I use for production like use, I haven't seen a noticeable drop in performance. Your mileage may vary of course ...

  • Windows HP laptop won't boot Windows - possible hard disk failure!

    Hi there!
A month ago my HP Pavilion dv6-6b57sa completely froze mid-use, and was unable to move the mouse or get any sort of response.
Naturally I held the power button to hard shutdown and restarted. Ever since then I have been unable to boot Windows 7 (the original OS) properly, and all I could get to was a Startup repair which took days to try to fix the issues, eventually coming up with a message saying it was unable to fix the errors.
Today I decided to ditch the data I had stored and do a fresh install - using the HP wizard by pressing F11 on boot and using a newly created USB Windows 7 install drive. After getting to the point of install process of Windows just loading the files, after choosing a hard drive partition successfully etc. the installation quit, citing a number of issues (screenshots link are below).
So I then try to restart the computer, and get a 'SMART Hard disk error' (screenshot link below) and when I select continue startup from there, it says Windows failed to start (screenshot link below) and then leads to me to the Startup repair manager again - which fails again - (screenshot link also below!)
So after doing a hard drive test, it says it has failed (screenshot link also below).
So what can I do? Is there a serious hardware related issue linked with the hard drive (which is bound to cost lots of £££ I bet), or are there further steps I can take?

Many thanks for your help in advance,

  • Windows 8.1 won't boot after repair loop fix

I have a 1 year old Gateway desktop with Windows 8.1 installed at the factory so I have no Install disk. My problem began when the computer went into a repair/recovery loop which I found out is a common unresolved bug for Windows 8.1. After hours and hours
of internet search and trial and error I was able to get the repair loop resolved by going into command prompt and typing "bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled No}". I then tried rebooting and the Recovery page came up stating:
Your PC needs to be repaired.
The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
    File: NETIO.SYS
    Error code: 0xc000000f
When I tried all of the options to address this problem none of them worked. I can't even boot into safe mode. Any suggestions?

    Hi Boomer3s,
Can we boot into the Windows Recovery Environment now (Restart and keep pressing "Shift")?
If the Windows Recovery Environment is not available ,we can choose to boot from a installation media .We can make a Windows 8.1 installation media here.
Create installation media for Windows 8.1
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
    a)      Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8.1 from it.
    b)      In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘Language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
    c)       Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
    d)      Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.Or the "System restore option "
    Hope this helps

  • Windows 8.1 won't boot after VS 2013 express for windows (metro) installation

I have purchased HP Pavilion e115sm  with AMD A-10 processor and 12GB of RAM notebook, installed windows 8.1 on it, i updated windows with "windows update" and installed all drivers needed. After that, i have tried to install VS 2013 express
for windows (metro). VS installation asked to restart windows after, so that some updates or whatever can be installed.
After restart, i just got windows logo with dots rotating and got stuck on that for several hours.
I turned it of after several hours, delete all partitions on disk, recreated them again and reinstalled windows with all updates. I tried to install VS again, but got same "logo screen" with rotating dots again for several hours...
Can someone help me with this?

    Hi,
Would you please first check if the system can startup into Safe mode?
Then, please try the startup repair in Advanced menu after you boot your computer via installation media.

    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2843-automatic-repair-run-windows-8-a.html
Then, if the issue still persists, try to boot PC in WinRE, and enter command prompt to run following commands:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd

  • Windows 7 partition won't boot, hangs on black screen / blinking cursor

    Hi all,
I just installed windows 7 home premium x64 on a new 100gb partition I made first with bootcamp assistant and then simply with disk utility the second time. I can't get windows to load however, it just sits forever at the black screen with blinking cursor at top left.
    I have tried the Bootrec.exe /Fixmbr
    bootrec.exe /Fix boot
    Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
fix that is floating around to no avail. The rebuildbcd command yields 0 copies of windows installed but still ends successfully.
i have spent the majority of my day trying to get this to work and have no leads left anymore. Please help!

I HAVE SOLVED MY PROBLEM! Windows is running excellently on my Bootcamp partition.
Taking a few steps back: I used Bootcamp to remove the disk utility partition, then remade it also using boot camp assistant. Ran the windows install, and this time instead of hanging endlessly on black or going back to step 1 after restarting, the install went all the way. I had to restart once when the computer hung on "starting windows" but it got back on track right after this.
I think I must've fudged something with Disk utility before.
Thank you so much for your help!

  • Windows XP (SP3) won't boot

I wonder if anyone here can help me. Neither the people at Apple, VMware or Microsoft can do so.
Basically my VM powers on and I can see my Windows wallpaper. No desktop, no Start menu, no ability to safe boot (that I've been able to figure out).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Happy holidays!

  • Windows and OSX won't boot after partitioning

Hi so I have a 2012 MacBook pro, it is running mountain lion and I also boot camped it and installed windows 7. I partitioned the hard drives correctly and it has been running great. Today I was on windows and used the disk manager to shrink my windows partition so that I could create another seperate 5gb partition for school. After I did this, my computer was running fine until I restarted it. When the windows logo appears while booting, it freezes and it flashes a blue screen and then shuts down. When I hold down the option key to boot into Mac OSX, the only option that comes up is windows, not even my recovery disk.
How do I fix this? I need to boot into these because all of my school things are on these drives. Please help

Never in my reply did I say I don't use Boot Camp or not to use boot camp. But I don't. And I don't have Windows installed in its own partition. I use a VM for Windows on my Mac for the few Windows programs I run on the Mac.
I started to read that reply but then didn't finish it as that poster was talking about Win 8 and AFAIK right now neither Boot Camp or the driver package supplied by Apple for Windows supports Win 8. Even though it isn't much different then Win 7.
It does create a Separate partition, as does Win 7, that is a hidden partition, just like Win 7 does, but it is different in some ways from Win 7. So that may of been the original problem that poster was having.
In any event I don't think that post will help the OP of this thread. But I may be wrong. Only time will tell.
The big reasons I don't use Boot Camp is I can't stand Dual Boot system and that I can't Re-Partition the BC partition without screwing the whole system up. Tried it, didn't care for it, then removed it and went VM.

You read that thread I provided the OP a link for...don't you use Boot Camp? Got any better ideas?

  • My HP Computer with Windows 8.1 won't Boot

Yesterday it was working perfectly fine. When I attempted to turn it on this morning, it went straight to Preparing Automatic Repair. After it was finished preparing it went to "Diagnosing your PC". I let it happen. After Diagnosing my PC it sent me to a page with 2 options; restart or advanced options. I have tried restarting it plenty of times. When I go to advanced options there's the normal 4 options: Continue to Windows 8.1, Use a Device, Troubleshoot, Turn Off PC. I have used all the options except the "Use a Device" option as I lack the proper devices. I tried restoring it and it instead deleted the restore point, removed a file, and was of no use. Refreshing my PC would not work because the "Hard drive was locked". I have not tried resetting my PC, that is a last resort. System Repair fails. I tried starting with different settings, none of it will work. Is that lights out for my computer? Any cause of this problem? One night its perfectly fine, the next its gone?

  • Mac Mini won't boot to Mac after partitioning for Windows 7

    system:
    Mac Mini, late 2009
    Intel
    4 gig ram
500 gig hard drive, brand new
    OSX
Mtn Lion with Mavericks just installed, runs ok
    problem:
Adding 90 gig partition for Windows 7, now won't boot to either Mac or Windows
After a little bit sticky install of Mavericks, I had the thing running fine. I downloaded support sw onto the USB drive as per Bootcamp instructions, and started going through the wizard to install Windows 7.
First try:  "error" while creating the partition. I ran the Disk Utitliy, Verify Disk, found an error, ran Repair, it fixed the error
Second try: it started making the partition again, and then apparently just zipped through the partition making real fast (it finished so fast I could hardly catch it), then shut down in an apparent restart (as it's supposed to?), and from then on it won't reboot all the way. I get about 15 seconds of gray screen, the Win 7 disk jerks a little, then screen goes blank and silence. No hd activity. Tried restarting with all the usual key combinations (Command-R, "X" key, Option key, etc, etc). Nothing will bring the Mac login screen up again.
What gives? It is such b.s. for this stuff to be so flaky. This is all totally current software on the Mac side, running fine for days, and an apparently ok partition created. Fix me, Apple.

Got it. Thanks for the help.  Isn't there any boot disk thing that I can just stick in there that will jerk the OS sideways and give me the Mac login screen, or did the Bootcamp/partition attack just wreck everything?  I don't see why I have to do an entire scrape of my totally updated and formerly working OSX just to retry a routine Bootcamp partition, which the girl at the Mac Store in Seattle here assured me has worked for them all the time.   It really is a crock. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying to put Windows 7 on there at all if all these latest versions are so flimsy. I wouldn't want to have to do it all again. But it looks like I'll have to at least once. And send Apple the bill for my wasted time. I ain't feelin' the glamour.

  • L512 won´t boot

    Hi everyone,
my laptop L512 with WIndows 8.1 won´t boot. Have no idea why. Tried Ubuntu, it won´t boot either ("Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. [4294667.918000] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 0 of device 0000:00:1f:6"). Works the same for graphical safe mode Ubuntu. The only way when it boots up is using system rescue cd 4.5.2.
Keeps switching between "Microsoft logo and spinning loading circle" and "Microsoft logo and Preparing automatic repair..." every restart.
Tried recovery/reinstallation using Windows 8 64-bit Instalation DVD - does not help (reads from the DVD for a while but then stops reading and the computer remains turned on, all the time I can see only Microsoft logo and spinning loading circle).
BIOS updated, MemTest86 (the newest) passes, hard drive diagnostics in BIOS passes.
Does anyone have the same problem? Thanks everyone for help.

  • My Macbook Won't boot from USB drives

Alright. Seems that ever since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, I keep having one problem after the next. It's probably my fault, but I've been doing nothing I would think to be wrong...
Anyway. Here's a breif history. I have a Macbook pro. Before I installed Mountain Lion, I had Snow Leopard installed with Windows 7 on BootCamp. I installed Mountain Lion and made a startup USB for it as well. I used that USB as a startup drive so I could shrink my OS X installation partition on my HD so I could make a third partition since I am running out of room on my Windows Partition for games. It suceeded, I partitioned the remaining space on the drive as an ExFAT, and restarted. I tried to load up Windows, nothing would boot. I then loaded up my OS X partition just fine. No issues there. Figured something with the partition messedup the Windows install. So I decided to reinstall Windows. Nope, the Windows install USB won't boot. Okay... Maybe if I delete that extra partition I made, things will work. Nope, won't boot the Mountain Lion start up USB now. And for some stupid reason I cannot resize the partitions using the Mountain Lion startup partition on the HD.
So, what did I break that made it so only OS X will start up and no other bootable drives?

Week 2, this problem still occuring. Would be nice if this support forum actually offered support...
