  • Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?

Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?
As far as System Requirements go, they are the same for WIN 8 and WIN 8.1
    Sympton:
Windows 8.1 Installation DVD loads for some time, no circle of dots, then PC reboots
with quick flash of six lines or so of white text (on black backgound) @ 106 seconds
Needed to use Smart Phone video camera to capture
    Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button ...
    Error Code:0x000000C4
    Parameters:
    0x000...91

    0x00000000000000000
    0x00000000000000001
Presumably message is intended for frozen PC, hence 'hold down power button'
In this case it flashes and re-boots
Windows 8.1 Image loads quickly, flash and reboots PC, having corrupted boot entry
(thankfully not other entries in Boot Manager situated on Dell System Reserved Partition)
    PC Desktops affected:
    Dimension 5000 - shipped JAN'05

    Intel Pentium 4 640 3.20Ghz 64bit NX enabled
    ATI Radeon HD 6450

    RAM 3GB
    Intel Pentium D 820 2.80Ghz 64bit NX enabled

Both the above PC's Install and run Windows 8 without a hiccup
    Another 'ancient' machine, but unaffected:

ATI HD 6450 (Now HD 7750)
All 8.0 & 8.1 clean Installs and Upgrades on this platform had no problems
Hope some of you can throw some light on this. What does WIN 8.1 do in the boot
process that WIN 8 does not?
And if anybody has encounterd this before...
Note to multi booters - keep or reinstall Dell or other System Reserved partition (PRI,Active)
EasyBCD/Windows Boot Manager held on this partition (eg. 350MB)
If it gets corrupted, you can Restore it, rather than Gigabytes of 1st Primary O/S
Also, it will solve a lot of problems, when manipulating/adding/backing up/restoring O/S's
    That's it, happy computing...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Running upgrade assistant (going to Store rejects CPU, but no details)
    Results in:
    X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support LAHF/SAHF.
X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support PrefetchW.
There are at least three Processor requirements that M'soft does not list for WIN 8.1
and it's fairly well documented, if you ask the right question, eg.:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2058683/new-windows-8-1-requirements-strand-some-users-on-windows-8.html
So that's it, exclusion by 'stealth' - at least M'soft told you that processor required NX - Execute Disable Bit
    for Windows 8
For Intel units, look out for 'VT-x. Have a processor on the way, but will Motherboard pass CMPXCHG16b test?
    AND PrefetchW AND LAHF/SAHF
Windows 8 support ends 2015, that means people who bought it will have had 2 years use
WIN 8.1 Upgrade/Update (sic) is free, but costly if it won't run on your machine
So, those many people who decried Windows 8 and stuck to WIN 7, were right after all
Early supporters of WIN 8, have been 'betrayed'
'Minimum Requirement for Processor 1Ghz - don't make me laugh! (Presumably for Phone 8)
M'soft have a 'more info' link on System Requirements page, so why not spell it out...
Otherwise it looks like a PR/Cosmetic exersize

Hi brunos mum, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • Windows 8.1 won't install on partition

    Hi,
I have a late 2012 mac mini and trying to install Windows 8.1 through Boot Camp, using a USB drive.
When I get to the point of choosing the partition to install the Windows in, the only formattable partition (the Windows dedicated one) won't let me install.
When I click the details, a message stating that the partition is MBR and windows needs a GPT partition and thus cannot be installed.
However, checking with Disk Utility the disk appears as GPT.
What am I missing here and what's the solution for my problem?
I'm kind of frustrated and need that windows to run some work applications.
    Thanks!

I have another external hard disk connected via USB.
    Can it be the issue?
I did choose EFI during boot because if I let it run alone and choose "Windows" I only get a DOS looking message that tells me to put a bootable media and press any key, but it doesn't respond to anything, forcing me to hard shut down the computer pressing long time the power button.

  • Install Windows, ATI Graphics Won't Install/Resolution Poor/Speakers Don't Work

    Hey Apple Community,
I recently installed 64 bit Windows Home Premium on my 2011 MB Pro after getting it back from repair. I had Windows on it last time and it worked great, but this time I'm having some major problems. I followed the bootcamp assistant and Apple's online, downloaded all the windows software, etc. Partitioned the hard drive, formatted the bootcamp disk when asked, and it installed all the bootcamp stuff from bootcamp assistant.
However, it failed to install some files when it was on "ATI Graphics" - the installed stalled forever, and said some files were missing or corrupt. I was able to continue with the installation, and it loaded into Windows.
The resolution on Windows is terrible at 800x600. I went to Display and I can't even select my normal 1440x900 resolution like on my Mac side or like I previously had it on Windows. I tried to run the set up from the flash drive again, and it again failed on ATI Graphics.
Additionally,  all my keys worked (such as lowering screen brightness, etc), but my speakers do not work. The icon shows up when hitting the keys, but no sound is produced.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't have too much technical knowledge but I have some and can try to implement any solution.
(I have no idea why it worked last time but not this time :/)

  • Windows 7 won't install because drive is GPT type?

My Windows 7 crashed when I hit the "Restore to factory defaults" button. I talked to tech support and they said it would be alright to install the straight Microsoft Windows 7. So I bought it and have it now, but it will not install. It says that the drive is GPT and it can't install on a GPT drive.
So how do I change the drive type if I don't have a functioning operating system?
Also, the 0 key worked again for the first time since the crash, but it stopped working again.

  • Windows 7 recognizes my HP Printer but won't install the driver for it

I just bought a brand new computer with Windows 7 64bit installed on it.
After hooking it up, I connected my HP psc 2175 All In One Printer to it.
Windows 7 recognized that I had an HP psc 2100 series printer and said that it would go online to look for the driver to install.
After 10 minutes of searching, it tells me that I need "troubleshooting" which means "go look for it yourself."
I went to the HP website and the only help I found was a page telling me how to get my Windows 7 to recognize my printer.
My Windows 7 already recognizes it.
What I need is an explanation about to make Windows 7 download the proper Printer Driver to allow my printer to work.
    Any help?
Does this driver not exist for Windows 7 and HP PSC 2175 All In One Printer?

So the HP page says there is no driver at all for my Printer with Windows 7 ( Lucky Me) and that I need to configure my Windows 7 to use the automatic  Windows Update to find a driver to install.
As I mentioned in my original post, it already did this.
It recognized my printer and then starting searching for a driver with no luck.
Anyway, next on the HP page it tells me to connect my printer to my computer with a USB cable and then Windows 7 will look for the most appropriate driver to make my printer work.
So I connect the USB cable and it dings once and that's it.
    No message.
    No downloading.
    No status bar.
    Nothing.
It just dinged to recognize that I plugged in the USB cable.
According to the HP page, I should get a window telling me that My Automatic Windows Update is complete.
    Mine apparently didn't even start.
So now what should I do?
How can I make it download the generic printer driver without just expecting it to do so simply because a USB cable was inserted?

  • Windows update error 800f0246 when installing printer driver

I have Win 7 pro 64 bit and an HP3520 printer.  HP site says a Windows 7 driver is available via windows update.  When I go into Windows update, the drivers shows up under optional downloads.  When I try to download and install it it fails with error code 800f0246.  All other updates install fine.  I tried multiple times with the same error.
When I go into device manager the printer is listed under other devices with an icon indicating a driver issue.  When I try to update the driver it finds the downloaded driver that Windows update downloaded.  I select it and it fails.
I have Windows 7 beta still on my laptop and the printer driver installs from windows update just fine.
    Any ideas?

No go.  Uninstalled, rebooted, tried to reinstall again, still failed.  Fails when the printer is disconnected as well.  The HP site does not have a driver for manual install.  Any links for a driver lead to here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01874792&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=305968    Those steps do not work because the driver in windows update fails to install.

  • Windows 8.1 will not install the driver for Officejet 6310 All-in-One

Have downloaded the driver from the HP website, but it will not install. The download wizard "detected a problem with the driver software" but did not say how to resolve it. The option to download the software was still available, so I did that anyway. When attempting to execute from my hard-drive, extraction occurs, followed by a delay, and then a message that reads "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way". This is in an error box headed "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library".  Can anyone help please?

    Hi AB-Comp,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that your are seeing the error The download wizard "detected a problem with the driver software". I am happy to help you with this issue! I have some questions for you:
What Operating System are you using? Windows or Mac? What version?
Can you make copies with the printer?
How is the printer connected? Wireless, Ethernet, or USB?

  • Snow Leopard won't install because drive is not Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

I cannot install Snow Leopard (from regular Leopard) on my other 21" Intel iMac (not this one) because the hard drive is apparently only Mac OS Extended and NOT Mac OS Extended "(Journaled)".
Is there a fix for this? Everything else on the computer is working fine (and has been for a few years)
I'm not sure how it got that way but a few years ago I used Disk Warrior to correct some problems - maybe I re-imaged the hard rive using Disk Warrior into the wrong format?
Disk Utility confirms that the hard rive is indeed Mac OS Extended (what is the difference with "Journaled" anyway?).
I'm loathe to erase the disk, reformat, and use Time Machine to reload the data (what if the back-up drive is incompatible with the reformatted Mac OS Extended Journaled)? Maybe I can use Disk Warrior to re-image the disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Please advise best way to handle this situation.
    Thanks!

If you are certain the only problem is that the startup volume is not Mac OS Extended "(Journaled)" you may be able to fix this with Disk Utility: Select the volume in the list, then press command + j or select "Enable Journaling" from Disk Utility's File menu.
However, the reason the Snow Leopard installer may not allow the install is because the drive must be formatted with the *GUID Partition Table* Partition Map Scheme. If you, you will have to reformat the drive. To determine the Partition Map Scheme, select the drive (not the volume name indented below it) in Disk Utility & look at the last line of info in the window.

  • Windows 10 TP Won't Install

I'm trying to update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Technical Preview. Windows Update is downloading build 9926 and gets to about 70% saying "Setting Up". My computer restarts and I get a small watermark at the bottom right of the screen saying
evaluation copy (like normal) and displays the Windows logo shortly after. I get the loading animation with text "Restoring your previous version of Windows..." and it returns to where I started. (Windows 8.1 with all latest drivers and all
    updates installed)

I am hoping your Scanning and repairing drive C: is fruitful.
I am at the end of my limited knowledge.
If installing 9926 or 10041 continues to fail, then I can only offer you this.....
Access the cbs log which says there are corrupt files but unable to repair.
I know how to access the cbs log but I don't know how to use it to do manual repair.
Here is how to access cbs log :
go back to Command Prompt (Admin) > copy and paste this ......
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
    press Enter.
A cbs log relevant to corrupt files will be in a notepad on your desktop. It looks like this.....
Open it. Does it contain files that are unable to be repaired ?
If yes, I would suggest that you start a new thread, briefly explaining that you are unable to install Win 10 TP from Win 8.1, and that your sfc has found corrupt files but unable to repair.
Then, go to the cbs log at the desktop, open it, then copy and paste the log to the thread.
Ask for someone to analyze the log for you.
