Windows 8.1 x64 error 0x80070002 While System Restore
Today, I downloaded a file while Widows Defender was updating and it did not warn me about a virus. Now when I try to open Widows Defender, it says Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe' so I tried to restore. then when
I click System Restore, it gives me Error 0x80070002. Also, when I try to find the file that caused all this, it shows up as an incomplete download then it deleted itself when I came back to my downloads folder.
Hi
Open up an elevated command prompt and type in the following: sfc /scannow
Also look here for copies of the file:

Description of Issue:
Optical Drive is not recognised in Windows 8.1 (x64), or in UEFI System Diagnostics.
Steps to Recreate:
UEFI:
Boot PC into UEFI System Diagnositcs (F2 at POST)
Component Checks
Optical Drive
Sequential Check
Error: Not Optical Drive Installed.
Windows 8.1 (x64):
Run Device Manager
Error: No DVD/CD Drives section.
Scanning for new hardware changes nothing.
Relevent System Specifications:
Laptop: HP Pavilion 15-n023sa (Vanilla build)
Optical Drive: HP DVDRAM gu70n
Steps Already Taken to Solve:
Replaced DVD drive with one from similar spec HP Pavilion. The gn70n hotswapped perfectly in the other machine. No change on problem laptop. Conclusion: DVD Drive is working, and there are no issues with Windows 8.1 (x64).
Removed DVD Drive. Rebooted computer. Log into Windows. Shutdown. Refit DVD Drive. Boot laptop. This attempts to solve hardware glitches with PnP devices; as well as helping to fix any intermittent loose connection problems. Conclusion: No change.
Ran Troubleshooting for Hardware and Devices, via the Control Panel. Issue Found: Hardware changes might not have been detected. Exploring more options just takes you through to http://social.answers.microsoft.com/search/en-us/?query=hardware+device, this is a 404 error page. Conclusion: Windows Help and Support is severely lacking. They show no more information than just that something has been detected as being wrong.
Ran the Microsoft FixIt Optical Drive Troubleshooter and Automatic Repairer. (http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/5/8/F586FB7C-78E0-40EB-AF41-4C925F803CAF/CDDVDWin8.meta.dia... The troubleshooter reported that the device could not be found. It recommended removing all power cables, switching the device off and various other things that have no relevence to laptop hardware troubleshooting. It then said if the problem still persists, contact the manufacturer. Conclusion: Windows Troubleshooting cannot fix the problem.
Run Windows Update to ensure all updates and definitions have been installed. Conclusion: Windows is fully up to date.
Run a full Rootkit and heuristic Malware scan, using Sbybot S&D 2.3; as well as a signature based scan using Windows Defender. Conclusion: Laptop is clean of rootkits and malware, to the best of my knowledge.
Notes:
The DVD Drive is NOT showing up in the Device Manager, OR in This PC.
The DVD Drive is NOT being detected by the UEFI System Diagnostics.
There is NO reference to the DVD Drive in BIOS, other than as a boot option, which is generic.
The DVD Drive, itself, DOES work, and has been verified on a different machine.
This question was solved.
View Solution.Oh ok, that's fine. I was expecting to go through a first response resolution process. Once the gate keepers realise they're talking to someone who actually knows what they're talking about, it's usually pretty simple to skip through a lot of the script. Once you've got past the gate keepers once, it's usually easy to get a direct number for the actual resolution department.
Will they question why I've opened up the case to exchange a 1TB HDD for an 80GB HDD? (The only physical spare I have, atm). I know they'll understand, I'm only worried about giving them any reason to deny the warranty on such an extensive fix. -
System Update 4 on Windows 7 64bit - An error occurred while gathering user information
Dear all,
I installed System Update 4 on Windows 7 64bit (X300 laptop) and keep getting "An error occurred while gathering user information" at about 9% of Searching for agent updates.
I tried searching Google and this forum for possible solutions, but without much success. I would appreciate any help on this.
Thanks in advance!Hi,
in this situation try following:
open registry:
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Software\Lenovo\System Update\Preferences\UCSettings\RunTime
check if the informations are correct.
In case not, then correct them.
- Try to run TVSU as Administrator (right-click on it and select Run as Administrator)
In case this will be of no use, then just go into the install folder of TVSU and there you will see the folder called "Logs". In there you will for sure find the exact information on what went wrong. Perhaps some proxy config, or just the server was unavailable.
Cheers -
Windows 7 SP1 Installation Error - 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
Hi,
I use Windows 7 Professional x64. I installed Readiness tool. It was completed successfuly.
CheckSUR.persist
Summary:
Seconds executed: 597
No errors detected
When I try to install Win7 Service Pack 1 (standalone installer), I get File not found error (0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND). In CBS log, I see this error entry:
Info CBS Failed to find file: x86_networking-mpssvc_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_0c80f0c5176cbb85\Firewall.cpl [HRESULT
= 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]
I checked whether Firewall.cpl exists in SP1 or not. When SP1 installer gave error message, I didn't close SP1 window (in order to avoid cleanup). I copied
windows6.1-KB976932-X64.cab file from temporary folder which was created by SP1 installer. I extracted this cab file to new folder by 7-Zip program. I looked into this folder.
I found x86_networking-mpssvc_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_0c80f0c5176cbb85
folder that mentioned in CBS log. Firewall.cpl file didn’t exist in this folder.
Finally, I see that Firewall.cpl file doesn’t exist in required location in SP1 standalone installer
How can I solve the problem?
Thank you

hr=0x80070002From the CheckSUR log, I find one error regarding atiilhag.inf has been fixed. Please run SFC and the update readiness tool again until the logs give the all clear.
From CBS log, I notice the following error message.
"Failed to open the registry root: n/a, key: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePack\SPReview. er=0x2"
I suggest booting in Safe Mode and take the ownership of the registry.
1. Click Start -> type
regedit in the search box and press Enter.
2. Navigate to the following registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
3. Right click
Setup folder, choose permission, add everyone account into list with full permission.
4. Click
Advanced button, select the option for Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permission form this object.
After that, reboot in Safe Mode and run Standalone installer again to check the result. If the issue persists, I think the best efficient way is in-place.
In-place upgrade

Hi,
I'm getting 0x80070002 "The system cannot find the file specified." with KB2785094. I'm using Windows 8 Pro N. I've seen a few people with problems with this patch when I search online about it.
I've tried deleting everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads. I've run DISM /scanhealth and /restorehealth.
I also tried running WUSA with the /log option to try to find which file exactly is not found, but when I opened the log file in Event Viewer, it was empty.
How can I found out which file is causing the error?I found the answer here:
http://www.eightforums.com/windows-updates-activation/17523-kb2785094-failure.html
And also by checking the files updated on the KB page: I had deleted the Accessibility and System Tools folders under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. Once I recreated both those folders, it installed without error. Probably
it was Remote Desktop.lnk. I was getting the problem on 2 different computers.
Way to go Microsoft! Now I can't even move around my shortcuts without breaking stuff :) -

Windows 8.1 Store error 0x80070002
Hi all.
First of all, I will link to this thread http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_update/windows-81-store-error-0x80070002-comprehensive/2b0ed3e1-1835-4517-97dd-0a7abb6ef74c?page=3 where I have started fixing my error.
Basically at the very beginning when I had this issue, I found out I couldn't open Windows Store or PC settings - it kept just closing immediately as soon as I opened it. I somehow managed to get back Store and PC settings through searching on the web through
various methods. At about the same time, I realised the Metro Apps were not working. I uninstall and try to reinstall but error 0x80070002 prevents this from happening. There are now ugly black crosses in the bottom right corner of the tiles.
In the above thread, I was told to run sfc /scannow and DISM tools
Glad to say that sfc comes up clear and initially DISM highlighted missing .manifest files from KB2923768 and a missing jsproxy.dll file from the KB2887595 update - this is now solved after re-downloaded the updates from Microsoft and breaking it into .cab,
.mum, .manifest files etc.
So I thought after dealing with this errors by DISM, the Store would work. But unfortunately I'm still getting the 0x80070002 error.
I saw this thread https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/c4147bcc-a430-43fe-b4e9-f999552568da/81-store-apps-wont-load
And deleted the registry keys etc, XML files, ran the cmd and Powershell admin prompts but still to no avail!!
Where do I go from here...?Hi,

Hi,
My notebook which is a HP pavilion dm4 beats edition computer which runs WIndows 7 home premium, was just bought 2 months and I've been using it just for 2 months.
Yesterday morning it was working fine, and I didnt download any new software or do any changes but in the evening when i turned it on,
after the 'starting windows' screen, it was this error message
LogonUI.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\system32\authui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator the software vendor for support.
I tried safe mode, it goes back to the same error screen.
When i try pressing f8 and go to 'last known good configuration' it goes to the error screen as well.
I tried pressing f8 and going to HP recovery manager and selecting system restore but it says no system restore points have been created, when I try to create one or go forward, it says the computer is running in a limited state and its not possible.
The option 'restore to factory settings' can not be selected, I dont know why. The cursor does not change colour of the option when it goes above it, and that option cant be selected.
My recovery partition is there and I have not done any adjustments to it.
The only thing that opens is a command prompt window, could you assist me on how to restore to factory settings through this? Because typing rstui.exe brings the same message saying no restore points have been created.I cant chose system recovery, the option cant be selected.
When I can go onto command prompt after going to 'advanced boot options' but then typing sfc /scannow says the computer needs a reboot, once you reboot, its just the same thing.
Normally starting windows or starting windows in safe mode gives the LogoUI.exe bad image error just before when I would normally scan my fingerprint or enter the password.
I tried putting in a windows cd, but it wont let it 'repair the computer' but trying to reinstall windows, no hard disks are visible. Its like I dont have a hard drive.
But you can go to command prompt and go into dir you can view all my files. But just searching for C, it says directory of C was not found.
Its just really strange because the laptop worked fine in the morning, and in the evening, as soon as I turned it on, it was just this black screen and an error msg -
Windows 8.1 refuses to shut off System Restore when I tell it to do so
This problem is driving me crazy! Windows 8.1 will not let me turn off System Restore.
My OS and programs are on a solid state drive. I realized the other day that I only had 8 GB of space left...even though I had not done any other installations. I discovered it was because the System Restore feature was taking up 50% of my drive (about 60 GB).
I have other ways to back-up my system...so I want to simply turn off the feature. The OS lets me turn it off for the two other drives on my system, but when I turn it off on the "C" drive, it says that it's disabled...but it then continues to dump
backup files and drain hard drive space. If I leave it "on" and try to adjust the "max usage" for the feature in order to limit how much it uses on the SSD, it simply ignores my request and reverts back to the 50% default later on...sometimes
right away and sometimes a little bit later.
Most recently, I tried setting the maximum usage to roughly 6 GB. The setting was used successfully for a few days..but then all of a sudden, it popped back to the 50% allocation allowance. I'm thinking it did it as a response to hitting the 6 GB max in the
course of its work.
I don't know what else to do. If the feature is disabled, why is it still dumping files and taking up space? Why can't I completely turn it off like it will allow me to on the other drives?
Thank you for your help!Hi,
You could use T. Kujala's method to clear the system restore point.
And then use group policy to disable the system restore function:
1. Click WIN+R key.
2. Type gpedit.msc to run box.
3. Navigate to
Computer configuraton>administrative templates>system>System restore
find
Turn System Restore Off
Enable it.

maybe im missing your point here, the long paragraph is mindboggling -
Can't install iTunes in windows vista x64 (error 0x80070002)
I have been encountering some trouble when trying to install iTunes in my Windows Vista 64-bit PC. When I attempt to install it, it gaves me a HRESULT: 0x80070002 error. I have been looking on the internet for a solution to this and have already tried everything. I also have the same error code when trying to make Windows updates.
I was wondering if there is a solution to this problem or do I have to reinstall my OS to get it right.I think it would be a good idea to scan for malware as malware often interferes with Windows Update.
Download Malware bytes and run a full scan, there is a free version:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
In services, check the Window Update service. It should show as "started" and start up type automatic.
The other thing is to run the system file checker:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
This will attempt to fix problems and if it will not run, that is another clue to the problem. -

jattxxxHi Jattxxx,
Which JDBC driver are you using?
There was a similiar problem when using the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Driver for JDBC version 1.1 or an older version 1.2. Therefore, if you're using the MSSQL 2005 JDBC driver, I would recommend to replace it by a newer one of version 1.2 (*).
Best regards,
Guenther

This issue may be occur due to some DLL files failure registered on the system.
Troubleshooting steps:
1. Open a command-prompt on the problematic server, and type the following commands to manually Register the following VSS DLL's.
cd %windir%\system32
regsvr32.exe /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32.exe /i swprv.dll
regsvr32.exe vssui.dll
regsvr32.exe vss_ps.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml2.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
regsvr32.exe ole32.dll
regsvr32.exe oleaut32.dll
regsvr32.exe es.dll
vssvc /register
2. If the above steps don't resolve the issue. Since the VSS UI also depends on the proper functionality of the "Task Scheduler" service. Please check and verify the "Task Scheduler" service is Started. After a reboot,
please check if the Shadow Copies Tab can function properly.
Hope it helps.

worked for me on our 2008 R2 SP1 PDC server with file server (and DFS) role.
However I got a bunch of errors on registering most of components, only a few succeeded (vss_ps.dll,
msxml3.dll and command vssvc /register) - that was enough to restore the Shadow Copies tab in volume properties, I was getting access denied before. -
IDM CC is showing always showing error 0x80070002 while downloading. why?
I am unable to download anything in firefox add on idmcc.
I have already uninstalled plugin and load it again too.'''Solved:''' The older versions of IDM are not compatible with FF4. Even when we update the add-on, it doesn't work. Uninstall IDM from your system (Default Removal Setting worked for me) and install IDM v6.05 Build 14 or above. Hope it helps, like it helped me :)

Debug error message upon system restore?
My hard drive recently died so i replaced it. I tried restoring my system using time machine and an external harddrive and now upon booting, I get a big long error message at the grey boot screen that ends with "kdp_poll : no debugger device" anyone ever have this happen?
I booked time at the genius bar tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone else has run into this first.Did you first prep the new drive?
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

I'm trying to upgrade/rebuild an application. It was in 3.2 and now I'm moving to 4.1. Since APEX doesn't allow two tabular forms on the same page, I was trying to use collection handling to do the same thing, but I'm running into something I never s
