Windows 8 and Raid 5 (English)

Looking for confirmation that Windows 8 does not have the ability to use Raid 5 even if it is presented a single logical drive by a controller.
I have a SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 that makes a drive. All the docs say Raid 0 and Raid 1.
The Windows 8 and Raid 5 question already posted looks to be in Spanish.
With regards,
Quentin L. McCallum, CISSP

Software RAID 5 is not supported on Windows 8. You can use Storage Pool.

  • Dual Booting Ubuntu Linux and Windows on a RAID 1 setup

    Hi,
I just bought a Lenovo W530 with Windows 7 and two 500GB hard drives in a RAID 1 setup, is there a way for me to install Linux with dual boot while maintaing my RAID 1 setup?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
if you want both in a raid on two drives, there is no way simpler than using fakeraid.
Windows simply has only the fakeraid as a software raid and can't be run from a linux software raid. An Ubuntu 10.10 install to fakeraid is relatively simple but should not be undertaken without some understanding of what a raid install looks like or behaves.
As a starter, some simple rules have to be followed:
    1) Install Win 7 first
    2) If Win 7 occupies the whole raid drive, use Win 7 disk manager to shrink it to make room for Ubuntu.
    3) Use gparted on a live cd to place all your unallocated space for installing Ubuntu into an extended partition. This will insure that you will not likely exceed the 4 primary partition limit and thus bar an Ubuntu install.
Once prepared as above you should be able to install Ubunto to the largest unallocated space, as long as the partitioner recognizes the raid (ie the win 7 partitions will show in gparted). You should plan to run the install from the live cd so that you have determined beforehand that 10.10 will run on your system.

  • Windows 7 on mac mini server and raid 1

I just purchased a 2011 mac mini server with the hopes of installing windows 7 alongside lion.  Then my goal was to have the two drives mirrored.  I successfully mirrored the two drives using disk utility and then proceeded to install lion.  This all went fine.  Imagine my shock when I loaded up bootcamp to see an error message describing it's inability to install windows on a raided system.  The thought hadn't even occured to me that this would be an issue.
I have searched through various forums and other places on the internet and haven't found a solution.  I am curious if I can get anyone with any experience in this area.  Is it possible to have mac and windows installed on a drive... and have that drive mirrored to the second drive... regardless of what os i'm booted into?
    Thanks for your help guys

The GUI version of Disk Utility is very limited in what sort of RAID configurations you can create. It will only allow you to have a single partition on the disk and to make a RAID using that.
Boot Camp requires creating additional partitions on the disk and hence it complaining.
There is a commandline version of Disk Utility called diskutility (duh!). It has far more options available. Details for this command can be obtained by typing man diskutility in Terminal.app.
It appears that in theory you might be able to do the following.
Start off with both disks not setup for RAID
Use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition. Repeat this on each disk.
Then in Terminal.app manually convert the boot Mac partition to a RAID using diskutil appleraid enable
Then add the matching partition on the second drive to make it a working mirror using diskutil appleraid add
Then in Terminal.app manually create a RAID for the Windows partition using both drives and use FAT32 as the format using diskutil appleraid create
Then boot and run the Windows installer and tell it to erase the Windows partition as NTFS
I cannot gurantee the above will work and you should obviously have backups if needed. Another option would be to have the Mac partition covered by RAID but not the Windows partition, this would result in three volumes one Mac RAIDed volume, and two other non RAIDed volumes even though you have two physical disks.

    Hey mcooper156,
I would try the troubleshooting steps in this first article:

If that doesn't resolve the issue, then I would try and remove iTunes (and its related software) then reinstall:

  • Windows XP and ICH5R SATA RAID 0

Ok, I have searched and not found any answer so I need to ask a question.  I have a new system that I believe I set up with 2 Maxtor 120 Gb drives in RAID 0, but they don't seem to be doing what a RAID 0 grouping should.
The drives are on the ICH5R and the CTL I BIOS shows them enabled and in RAID 0, the drives did show up and were recognized.  Windows XP Pro shows them as drives that make up 240 Gb Raid grouping in the drive management utility but it shows them graphically as two drives and it has a letter assigned on another line to the second drive.  As far as I can tell they have been set up right but they are being treated as two seperate drives.  Again, to clarify, I see a line for drive D that says it is a RAID grouping of 224 Gb (the 120 shows as 114 available) but there are two boxes on the line both showing as healthy with the second showing as healthy and active.  On another line it shows drive E (the second 120) with 114 Gb available showing as healthy and active.
I thought it was just a graphics/explorer glitch but I have loaded a large group of data to the primary drive of tje grouping and the second drives still shows as having all the space free.  The graphical display (right click on the drive and click properties) shows that space is being used in the first drive but the second drive is empty.  There do seem to be a few files that are on the E (second drive) but they seem to be some sort of configuration files and only take up about 18 Mb while I have put files totalling about 10 Gb on D drive (and they show as taking up that much space but only on D).
Yes, I know that they are Maxtor's and other have had problems with them but mine seem to be working fine (as hard drives being recognized by Neo FIS2R) it just seems I may have done something wrong in Windows.
My question is what have I done wrong (if anything) and how do I fix it?  The BIOS seems to recognize the drives correctly, Windows seems to know about the drives as a RAID array but data is not getting striped.
    Thanks for any help.

I did put in the drivers (from the included floppy) during the windows install and I ran the intel RAID accelerator.  Drive management in Windows seems to recognize that it is a RAID grouping.  I actually had to go back and reload Windows because I did not do that the first time I installed it.  Before it would not recognize the drives at all.
So you two are thinking I need to start all over again and install windows (format the drives)?  I just got everything working and recognized so this is not what I would want to do if there is an alternative.

  • I'm from Argentina, sorry for my english. My question is: when I try to install or actualice an application from Apple store a window appears and say: error 1004, try later

When I try to install an application or an actualization from Apple store to my iPad a window appears and say: error 1004, try later.
What is that? It never happened before

All apps are forever tied to the AppleID that originally downloaded
them. It sounds like you have an app that someone else downloaded
for you. Delete the app and redownload under your AppleID. If it is a
paid app, you will have to purchase it under your AppleID.

Oh I agree with the "C'mon Apple" part. I just bought my daughter the shuffle for Christmas and we have been trying since xmas day to get songs onto the stupid thing. We have songs bought and waiting in the library and we have tried it on two separate computers. I have loaded and unloaded and reloaded the friggin software more times than I care to speak of and the songs have never ONCE been transferred onto the ipod. In fact, when I open itunes...nothing. It doesn't show the ipod anywhere. The only thing that happens is the Autoplay window comes up and just keeps running and running and running, with the little flashlight thing like it is frantically searching for something...and it never finds it!! I'm so irritated I could scream...any help??? Please!

  • Problem with m1319f mfp on WIndows 7 and Server 2008

    Hi there,
    I just bought a m1319f mfp.
Plugged it in an old D-Link dp-300u print server.
The printer work fine on Windows XP.
Not working on Windows 7 and Windows server 2008.
I configured the port as in XP (adress, lp, queue name) and when i print from 7 or server 2008, there is a message on the printer saying "printing document". It stays there for a couple of minutes but no printing. No stuck document on the computer printing queue.
Every time i install the printer from 7 or server 2008, the print server have to be restarted (lights flashing).
The print server seems to fail when i'm on the Windows printer searching part (windows trying to find the printer when adding a new printer).
Maybe the dp-300u is too old?
I have another printer on it (LPT this time) and its working fine. Brother MFC7220 it is.
    ANy idea?
    Thank
Hope i have been clear,  English is not my first language...

  • The Creative Cloud application becomes inoperable continually on both my Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems. I'm tired of re installing the application after deleting the OOBE file to get updates and syn settings between computers for Photoshop. Is this

The Creative Cloud application becomes inoperable continually on both my Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems. I'm tired of re installing the application after deleting the OOBE file to get updates and syn settings between computers for Photoshop. Is this an endemic problem with others? I'm using Google Chrome as my browser. Is this an issue with the problem?

Similar problem just happened to me with the Creative Cloud Update 1.7.1.418—slightly different so I thought I'd share. I have multiple Adobe Creative Cloud programs installed on my computer, all working just fine. I updated the Cloud App to the latest version and then it shows me that I have only one program installed! All my previously installed programs (Photoshop and the like) still work but show as "install" instead of "Up to date". Initially I thought I'd have to re-install the Cloud app or recreate the OPM data base but then I noticed that some of the Cloud app preferences (Apps > Settings > App Language) were different to what I had set previously. I use English (International) language, the update had reverted the app back to English (North American). I flicked back to my previous language and bam, all my apps now show as being installed correctly.

  • Intel Matrix Storage Manager disables Windows Update and Windows Validation on Windows 7 64-bit

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61 8918CTO on which I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64-bit) on a new Seagate Momentus XT 750GB drive. The installation was trouble-free, as were all of the post-install Windows Updates.
Then I installed ThinkVantage System Update 4.03 and used it to install most of the available Lenovo updates. Big mistake. I'll spare you a detailed account of the hours I wasted troubleshooting, rolling back to previous restore points, and doing more troubleshooting, but it turns out that installing Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver v. 8.9.2.1002 caused Windows Update and Windows Validation to fail.
Symptoms: Windows Update control panel can't check for updates and reports that the Windows Update service isn't running when it actually is. Online Windows Validation fails and the standalone Windows Validation utility won't install. Microsoft programs that require a validated copy of Windows (e.g., Microsoft Security Essentials) won't install.
Solution: Roll back the driver for the relevant SATA controller to the previous driver.
I've reinstalled ThinkVantage System Update 4.03 and hidden the proposed Intel Matrix Storage Manager update; since then, I've used it to complete my Lenovo updates without issue.
I hope this post will help other people with this problem find the solution a lot faster than it took me!

This happened after installing a new advanced format drive with 4k-byte sectors, I'd guess.  If the storage driver doesn't report the physical sector size to Windows, update fails.
I just ran across this myself (again) putting Win 7 on a T400.
I don't know why this is still going on.  It may be that the update lists for older machines still have pre-AF-drive drivers listed.
FYI, another fix is going to the Intel site and installing the latest Matrix Storage Manager AHCI driver.  This may be more desirable than rolling back to an older driver in some cases.

  • Dual booting Windows 7 and Vista on dv9620 on dual hard drives

Hi this might look like a repeat question but i haven't seen it answered by anyone that has tried it.
I downloaded the release candidate of Windows 7 and i want to dual boot it on my notebook.
The drives I have available are Disc0 which holds C: (the drive running Vista) and E: the HP_Recovery partition.
Then I have Disc1 which holds D: the Data drive and nothing else.
I want to run Windows 7 on the D: drive So can anyone who has done this tell me how they did it? Most of the dual booting how to's I've seen are for for booting on seperate partitions a single hard drive and because i'm something of a novice to this I would like some advice with more reference to my situation.

    Hello and welcome,
You can probably finagle the partitions to allow for dual boot: copy the contents of D: to C: and delete D:, for instance.   Speculating, since I don't have an IdeaPad to test on. You usually/probably/maybe lose the OneKey Recovery feature if you touch the partitions.
Others here on the Linux board may have been able to preserve OKR, but I'll leave that to them to describe since I haven't done it.
Long way of leading up to the question: is it sufficient to run Linux in a virtual machine, or as a WUBI install within windows?  That keeps things simple and makes backups much easier as well.
Whatever you do, burn your recovery media first.  Now.

  • How to install the driver of the 'SCSI and RAID Host Controller'

    Hi,
I have two Windows XP(32Bit) installations:
•Windows XP SP2(32Bit) which is old and it seems as if it is infected by some viruses.
•I have installed another fresh clean Windows XP(32Bit) SP3. However, I have found that there is no category named with ''SCSI and RAID Host Controller'. However, when checking out the old version of Windows XP, I found  'SCSI and RAID Host Controller'
    is there. (Screen shot below)
The new Windows XP(32Bit) SP3, there is no 'SCSI and RAID Host Controller'
    My motherboard is:
My Desktop Computer(Intel P 4, 512MB of RAM, and Graphics Card  with 256MB of RAM.
]I am seeing that most computer doesn't has the scsi / raid controller . in the old Windows XP on my computer that SCSI and RAID controller exists, and it it has not  a yellow mark on it.
When I installed  a new windwos XP 32Bit SP3, no SCSI/RAID in divice manager .
My computer sound on new Windows XP doesn't work , however, on old Windows XP SP2 works well. I have a buitl-in  sound card. SCSI and RAID controller category in the device manager on the old Windows xp SP2 is realted to sound card,I don't think.
Thus, What drivers would let the 'SCSI and RAID Host Controller' added in the device manager?
A man should convert his anger and sadness into strength to continue living in this life.

If you open the case and shine a light on the motherboard you can usually see both the manufacturers name and the model printed on the pcb somewhere. You should also normally see this information on the first POST screen when you turn on the PC.
Otherwise Google "775i65G" like I did.
Here are the driver downloads (assuming it is an Asrock 775i65G R2.0 and not an R3.0)
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G%20R2.0/?cat=Download&os=XP
You should install the inf driver first. Hopefully after you do that you will see your desired listing in Device Manager.
With regard to the AMR driver and the HDMR driver, you can find some information about these here :
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio/modem_riser
Unless you actually have something plugged into these risers, it is probably not necessary to install the drivers.
However, the drivers for the integrated C-Media audio chip and the Realtek Lan chip may prove useful.
It looks like the motherboard has integrated video but if you are using a graphics card it will not normally be necessary to install the VGA driver.
You can download both the manual and the installation guide here
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G/?cat=Manual
And if "SCSI and RAID Host Controller" is still not shown in Device Manager, don't worry - because these functions are not supported by your motherboard (again assuming it is an Asrock 775i65G)
    Thanks a lot,
First of all, when saying that I have multi-operationgs systems, I mean there are two operating systems installed on my PC(SP2, SP3) both are 32Bit. The first Windows SP2(NOT installed by me) has all multimedia audio card installed
well, and has SCSI and RAID Host Controller shown the device manager. However, only the VGA is not installed on Windows SP2. However, the second one Windows SP3(Installed by me) has VGA not installed, Multimedia audio NOT installed, and there is no SCSI and
RAID Host Controller in device manager.
First: Why did the CPUz, specy didn't detect motherboard name, and only detect the model. IF I need to  open the case and shine a light on the motherboard you can usually see both the manufacturers name and the model printed on
the pcb somewhere, then what benfit would be there from hardware detection software?
Second: Yes, my motherboard has integrated video, and integrated audio card
However, this doesn't mean that I don't need to install them since the Vidoe controller is not properly installed (it is a default VGA ) Also, Multimedia audio controller is not functiong at all.
Finally: if And if "SCSI and RAID Host Controller" is still not shown in Device Manager in Windows XP SP3,  because these functions are not supported by my motherboard, then why is 'SCSI and RAID Host
Controller' installed/shown in the device manger in Windows XP SP2 on the same PC???
A man should convert his anger and sadness into strength to continue living in this life.

Yes, you can download it using your Adobe ID.
Just a word of caution here:  DO NOT just "delete" the other version.  Use the correct Adobe Uninstaller to UNISTALL it.  Otherwise you'll leave all kinds of leftovers and debris that can interfere with any new install.

  • Photoshop CS6, Windows 8 and crazy GPU behavoir

    Hi!
I just installed windows 8 and i got a lot of problems with CS6 Extended (Design and web premium creative suite installed) and GPU use (i never had a problem under windows 7).
My sistem is updated and equipped with a I7, 8 GB RAM and a Radeon HD 5870 card and i'm working winth Canon EOS 1Dx and EOS 5D mkIII raw files (but the problems appear also with snall jpg)
When PS use the GPU acceleration the display becone crazy showing a lot of different things.
This is the first list of things appening:
    A) very often (about 95% of times) when i use the crop tool the image start to flicker from visible to black ( http://www.asf-images.com/ps1.jpg ) so it is impossible to work; sometimes (50% of times) images become visible again moving the mouse to a different location and after moving again the mouse the images fade to black and so on... frustrating.
    B) cropping become very slow
    C) during crop images a big distorsion appear ( http://www.asf-images.com/ps2.jpg)
    D) sometimes during crop or changing the GPU setting the border outside the image become filled of gray/white little square as a trasparent layer (http://www.asf-images.com/ps4.jpg)
    E) after canceling the crop tool action (using the cancel button in the Option tool bar) the image fade to black (http://www.asf-images.com/ps5.jpg )
This appens also with blur tool, liquify and all that use the mercury engine.
Changing GPU drawing mode from normal to basic or advanced all works but after closing and reopening PS problems are still visible
Sometimes the graphic card GPU disapper (http://www.asf-images.com/ps3.jpg)
    Pleae, Help!!!
Last: sorry for my english :-)

Hm, maybe the manufacturers of the products ought to be the ones to "blaze through" the problems before the products are released.
Gee, what a concept - Microsoft, AMD, and Adobe all working together with the pre-release versions so that the released version actually works for users.
I believe that Chris Cox worked on trying to get AMD and Microsoft to include proper and working drivers for the Windows 8 release.  But apparently that input wasn't enough to get the job done, becuase in these modern times greedy businessmen always push to release software products before they're finished.  It can always be fixed later through the "cloud", right?  Sheesh.
But even beyond that, there has been an important shift:  Microsoft no longer considers it a high priority that you should actually be able to WORK with Windows.  Their focus has shifted from powering business to powering toys (consumer tablets, that sort of thing).  As such, they care most about the applications that they'll be selling in their shiny new App Store, and almost not at all whether you and your desktop applications work.  Thus the very basis for the philosophy "Microsoft released it, it must be worth having" is now suspect.
Some of that can be mitigated.  I've been running Windows 8 for a year now, and I've had my Windows 8 book done and on sale well before the public release.  Some folks have taken advantage of it and have had a much smoother experience, but I can't document around software that just doesn't work.
As it is, my best advice was and remains this:  Watch and wait while other poor users blaze through the problems.
I sound like a helluva skeptic, don't I?  But I'm really an early adopter technophile who has been around since before there ever was a Microsoft.  That should help you understand the weight of my statement above.
    -Noel
