Windows 8 Bootcamp Fail

Running OS X Lion (10.7.3) on my iMac I tried to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64 bit via Bootcamp. I burned the 64 bit ISO to DVD-R using Disk Utility and went at it. I decided only to check the 'Install Windows 7' box when installing since the How-To's I read explained that they wouldn't work. After the 'partitioning' was finished, the BootCamp status changed to 'Idle' and a few minutes later it crashed. After Bootcamp crashed the entire computer started to act weird, and there was no possible way to soft restart.
After some minutes of waiting for OS X to return to normal, I gave up and held down the power button. I could no longer boot into OS X. After some minutes of the black screen with the blinking white "_" character, it launched into the Windows 8 install. After entering the product key however, it gives me a 'Compatibility' error saying I would need to restart the computer without the boot disc in it so 'Windows can start normally' for the install. But after ejecting the disc the Windows install wasn't even capable of starting, and it was impossible to eject it after the Windows install appeared. I was afraid I lost OS X, but luckily I was able to restore to a Time Machine backup via the Recovery Disk.
Can anyone think of why this might have happened? There are countless Bootcamp threads here and I'm having trouble finding someone with just the same (or a reasonably similar) issue as mine, so I'm sorry if this is the kind of question that's been asked a dozen times. I'm a bit of a noob to Macs and a total stranger to Bootcamp, so my only resources are Google and forums like this. I would mess around with this kind of thing more but the first time I even tried Bootcamp I almost lost my Mac so I don't think trial and error is the best avenue here.

Hi, I am using Windows 8 on my macbook pro and it is running perfectely fine.  I would say Windows 8 preview even though unfinished is an improvement over Windows 7.
As far as running it on your Mac I feel it is best to install Windows 7 first and then go to Windows 8.  Now to the best of my knowledge you probably don't need an activated version of Windows 7 to install Windows 8 so you could use a friends Win 7 disc or get the ISO which is not illegal as you are installing it without activating.
If you want to purchase Win7 it probably would not be a waste of money since the cheapest copy of Win7 and the Upgrade fee for Win8 will likely cost less than a retail full version of Win8.
To install the Windows Suport Files make sure to right click go to properties and run in compatibility mode for Win7 and then make sure to update them after that.
If you want to virtualize I would highly recommend that you make sure your processor model supports virtualization because Apple released a few core2duo's and maybe other processors without virtualization which is bogus since it is a customer ordered product from Intel.
Also make sure you have at least 4GB of ram it's not a great experience with less than, heck even with 4GB its a lil sketchy.  8GB is perfect since you can give 3-4GB to Windows.
I hope this helps a LIL, it's my understanding that this preview will work well into next year so I think it is worth it to put it on your Mac
Enjoy!

  • Disk repair failed after using osx with hibernated windows/bootcamp with macdrive

    hi,
i just realized i did something really, really stupid.
I forgot I just closed the lid of my MBP the last time I used windows/bootcamp (instead of shutting it down) and that triggered hibernation.
The next time I powered my MBP on, OSX startet automatically and I opened some of the same files that "were already open" in the hibernated windows (on osx main/boot partition, using macdrive in windows).
That (or resuming the hibernated windows later) probably led to some data corruption that prevents the osx volume from booting and neither the automatical repairing during booting nor disk utility (external hdd or recovery partition) is able to repair it. (not sure if there is any difference).
Booting in verbose mode shows the file names that were double-opened during repair attempts.
After booting osx from an external HDD, Disk utility fails mounting the main osx volume straight away, but succeeds with mounting it after a failed repair attempt.
I only have read acces then, though.
bootcamp partition is still working fine, btw
    1. I wonder if it is possible to gain write access somehow and if deleting just those "double-opened" files/the containing folder (which is saved on dropbox btw, so I really wouldnt mind deleting them/it) would solve the whole problem or if i really have to reformat everything and spend 10+ hours to revert everything to the state before the data corruption. ?
    2. if I have to reformat + reinstall, using migration assistant and the corrupted volume as source isn't a great idea, i guess? are there any options to exclude some specific folders of the user folders?
    3. will the bootcamp partition work after reinstalling osx or do i have to winclone-it somewhere? checkdisk says the volume is OK btw.
    many thanks!

Hi 3tc, thnx for a tip.
One more question - did procedure solve also "file already in use" problem on win bootcamp?
    thnx

  • BOOTCAMP fails to install Windows XP SP2

I ran the assistant, partitioned ok, but running the Windows XP disk that used to work with the public beta versions of bootcamp fails to install after rebooting: [in windows style] "disk error...press any key to restart" All I can do is shut down the mac and reboot in Mac OS.
    Anyone?

Not to sound stuffy - but you would do better posting this in the BootCamp forum.
It's not an unusual problem and others have posted ways to fix it.

  • Error: Windows Vista failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause

    PLEASE HELP!
My Lenovo SL500 is not working at all - I get error: "Windows Vista failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"
I tried the following on my Lenovo:
Windows repair menu = "windows cannot be repaired"
    Lenovo Rescue and Repair
Rescued my files from Hard-drive (copied to external hdd)
    Restore System = Failed
Diagnose hardware = HDD passes all tests
Don't know what else to do with = Boot from another device ? Access BIOS?
Because I do not have the windows vista install disks
I purchased and downloaded the recovery disks from neosmart.net
The neosmart windows vista recovery disks DO NOT WORK = Error is "Unable to find any valid Windows partitions on this computer".
The Hard-drive exists because I was able to back-up files from HD through (Lenovo Rescue & Recovery Rescue files). So there is a hard-drive.
I don't know what to do next?
Last resort is to Factory Restore via either the Lenovo R&R or Windows Vista Recovery Disks (neosmart)?
    Will I still have windows?
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi, Josemne
Yes, if you can restore the system through Rescue & Recovery, then you will still have WIndows on your machine, but all your files will be deleted from the hard drive. Luckily, you have already saved those files elsewhere. I would recommend trying to restore the system and see if that works.
    Best,
    Adam

  • How do I share Mac music and photo files when in Windows Bootcamp mode?

I have a new iMac with a terabyte of storage that includes about 30 gigs each of iTunes music and jpg photos. I need to share them to the Windows Bootcamp environment so I can wirelessly stream to them to a DLink DSM 320 media server connected to an AV system located in another room. When in Bootcamp Windows the the 320 can "see" the Windows machine but cannot find any media.
So the question is, how do I share files between Mac and Windows when in Windows Bootcamp?
A better solution would be to directly connect the Dlink when in the Mac environment but I have not been able to find software to do that (the Dlink product is for PC only.) If anyone knows of such software that would be great too.

Windows needs third party software to see files on the MAC OS extended FS. I've heard MacDrive does this.

  • Bridge CS3 (Windows XP) fails to start because Symlib.dll was not found

Bridge CS3 (Windows XP) fails to start because Symlib.dll was not found? How do I fix this? I've re-installed and the auto updater has run...I even downloaded and ran the patcher application? By the way Bridge CS3 doesn't show up in the CS3 program list in the start menu but it is installed in my program files - I've tried launching it directly from there as well. Bridge CS2 is operating just fine.
Update: I installed and ran the Adobe Support Advisor, resulting in - Issues: "The module found no solutions to report for the selected log file."
I tried to package the report and the error read: "The size of the package is too large to be handled with the current configuration! Please contact Adobe Support for additional information."
I opened a web based report/case number at the Adobe Support Portal about the missing Symlib.dll (including the Adobe Support Advisor error). Their response was: We regret to inform you that complimentary support for your product is not available and/or has expired.

Did Bridge work before? If so, reset preferences by holding down the Ctrl key when starting Bridge. If successful you will get a Reset Window, choose all 3 options.

I am trying to setup my Time capsule via a ethernet cable as a back up for a new iMac. The on button on the time capsule set up window keeps failing to stay on. Any ideas what to do?

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Creative Cloud on Mac OSX and Windows Bootcamp on the same machine.

    Hello,
I am looking into getting 3DStudio Max which is a Windows only program but will need to flip flop between 3DSM and Photoshop.  I am wondering, can I install my Adobe apps on both Operating Systems so that I can have them on my regular Mac OSX for normal work and in Windows Bootcamp for when I do 3D renderings?  I rather not use a Virtual Machine considering both of those programs are going to take a lot of RAM already.  Adding another program to that mix I feel will just overheat/slow down my machine.
Thank you for your thoughts and time,
    Sarah

that's interesting.  it may be a problem, but give it a try.
just open your bootcamp windows, navigate to https://creative.adobe.com/ and start downloading ps.  a cc desktop app will download to your bootcamp windows and hopefully you ps will work on your bootcamp windows.  i don't see any reason why it would stop working your mac, but that will count as your two installations so you will not be able to install on another computer.

  • Windows 7 Fails to Logon [More in description]

    Hello  IT Professional,
So after turning my computer back on this morning a screen popped up saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.". I thought
to myself that this was no big issue, but then after multiple attempts Windows had failed to find a solution to my issue. I tried to restore it to a previous day in which it was still working, but I had only one option available. After restoring Windows with
the only restore point the problem still persists. To explain the problem a little better... Windows starts to power up, and it shows the Windows logo. Everything is going as normal; I can see the mouse and the black screen right before my desktop appears.
Then my screen very quickly flashed a blue and yellow color and restarts my computer. I have tried to restart in safemode, but the same thing happens. I have managed to burn Ubuntu to a disk and launch that after I changed to order of the Windows startup to
having the CDROM go before the hard disk. I have just managed to backup all my files. Any help would be much appreciated. If you need me to explain anything better just ask, I understand I can be confusing sometimes :).
    Regards,
             Noah Gerhard
P.S. My computer is custom built if that helps

    Hi,
Besides S.Sengupta's suggestion, we also could try the Last Known Good Configuration to start Windows:
When starting the PC using the Last Known Good Configuration, your computer starts with the conficuration
from the last time your PC booted successfully. To do this, follow these steps:
1.Click the Start button, then click the arrow next to Shut Down, then click Restart.
2.As your computer starts, press and hold the F8 button. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by shutting down and restarting your computer.
3.On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), and then press Enter. Windows will start normally.

  • Windows 7: Windows Backup failed 0x81000031

Windows backup ran, and my once-pristine and empty backup drive now has something filling its space, so I assume some files were successfully backed up. Thing is, the Action Center icon has the red x on it and it comes up with one issue: Check, your backup (Important). Clicking this issue produces the following dialog:
    Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options
    Check your backup
Windows Backup failed while determining libraries location of one of the users included in the backup.
Details: BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used because critical BitLocker system files are missing or corrupted. Use Windows Startup Repair to restore these files to your computer.
    Options:
    *Try to run backup again
    *Change backup settings
    Error code: 0x81000031
Thing is, I'm using home premium. I don't see bitlocker as an option and I'm not terribly enthused about having to repair bitlocker when I can't use it to begin with. (Primarily, because I use Windows 7 Home Premium. Even if I used a version which supported bit locker, I'd never use it to begin with - I lack a TPM chip which means that anybody who has physical access to my machine could compromise my security regardless of bitlocker, it'd just take slightly longer for them if bitlocker were present.)
I'm digressing, the point is I don't use bitlocker and I don't know how not having bitlocker prevents Windows 7 from copying files from one drive to another and making a note in a logfile that the files were backed up. I realize I simplify the method of backing files up but it doesn't get much more complex than copying them to a separate location and timestamping them.
tl;dr: Windows Backup produced error code 0x81000031 because bitlocker drive encryption cannot be used. I don't want to use bit locker drive encryption I just want to back my files up to an external drive. Suggestions? Preferably ones that don't make me run Windows Startup Repair.

Well 4 years later same problem simple fix, did every thing else as suggested by microsoft sys repair start up repair etc etc and just removing the drive that was included in library fixed the issue i have spent hours on
now have to reinstall all that sys restore removed...SO EVERYBODY do what Sneha said first..
    Clicked "Start", then "Computer".
Right clicked on the "Library" I wanted to modify, and selected "properties".
Immediately saw that my DVD drive was an included folder in the library.
Clicked on the drive in the list, and the Remove Button became active.
Clicked on "Remove" and it removed the drive from the list.
Clicked on "Incude Folder" and added in my real backup folder location (not required, I just want a libray connection to
    it).
Clicked on "Ok".   thanks ath1234 for the process..Cheers

  • Is it possible to get ReadWrite Mac HFS+ drivers for windows 7 so I can manage my Mac formatted Backups through windows bootcamp?

    Hello!
I was just curious if there was a driver or something I can install so that I can read and write my mac OSX formatted [HFS+] external drives in Windows 7,
using the windows file explorer [the equivalent for finder].
This is essential for me because I need the windows explorer copy/file transfer dialog box with all it's options and functionality.
Any suggestions relating either to windows bootcamp, or running windows through vmware fusion next to mountain lion [I would much prefer to be able to do this with VMWare Fusion, but either way is absolutely fine.]
I need this because I need to do HEAPS of file management,
and I find finder's file transfer / copy dialog box to be totally inadequate, hopeless and almost useless, [a nightmare in fact] next to the excellent functionality of Windows 7 file transfer dialog.
This has been my most hated issue with OSX for years now.
File management is a total nightmare in OSX.
I may make another post / feature request detailing my hatred of this lack of functionality, because it kills me every time I have to manage and backup large folders filled with lots of files and subfolders.
    Sorry for the end-rant.
Thanks so much for any help! (:

    Hello Alberto and Woodmeister50,
thank you for both your answers.
I have to try and remember to state things I have tried previously or am aware of; my bad!
    Alberto:
    Thanks for your ideas.
    I'm aware of ex-fat format.
Unfortunately, my external drives are quite full and a reformat or EXFAT partition is out of the question.
I'm formatted them OSX extended journaled a couple of years back before I was aware of exfat.
I could buy yet another drive, but I don't really want to do that until SSD's come down in price and expand in size.
[also, while not a big issue, I hear EXFAT can't handle files bigger than 4gb. Not that I have many such files, so that's not really a big concern].
So doing my file organization through windows explorer is, to my knowledge, the best option,
if it is possible. [I hope!]
This would be a perfectly satisfactory solution for me if I can use Windows Explorer through VMware to manage and organize the files and folder on my HFS+ external drives.
I'm not sure if paragon HFS+ or Macdrive allow you to use windows explorer to manage files?
Or only through their own file manager and dialogs?
A costly gamble if they do not, and if their file/folder transfer dialog also happens to be inadequate.
    Woodmeister :
    Thanks.
Actually, my problem is both HFS+ / windows compatibility AND that I hate finder
[the HFS problem being a result of the fact I hate finder]
I have tried Pathfinder [the demo version though, maybe it has limited functionality],
and I have found it's file transfer dialog / options / functionality to be very totally lacking as well.
    Others I have tried.
    Mac Explorer.
MoveAddict doesn't seem to work for me presently, although I hear it might be good.
Total finder is fantastic for other reasons but does nothing for the copy dialog.
Um.... there were a bunch of others I tried, but all no good.
So I guess my question is still the same, with a bit more specific information now
For a very in-depth review/analysis of the hatred of finder's lack of features in this area,
there are many threads on many forums, such as can be found if you google for the thread on this forum
GOOGLE : MacRumors OS X: how to merge folder contents, not replace
Please ignore the fact that some ex-windows people are just not used to the fact that "replace" in finder means to replace a whole folder, as this is not the issue.
The lack of functionality is, and there are many pages of mac-loving people complaining about it.

  • Windows 7 fails when authenticating to another computer on the network

In Windows 7 (home premium, 64 bit), I am attached to a VPN (Using OpenVPN). Then, whenever I try to either:
    - Use explorer to look at the file system of another computer
    - Use the remote desktop connection on another computer
    - Map a folder on another computer as a network drive
... in all of these cases, I get the authentication dialog and once I send my username and password, it crashes. For example, when I use explorer, it hangs, and then comes back with the message: "Explorer has stopped working"
I have elsewhere seen a proposed solution for similar symptoms, of deleting this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions\MachineThrottling
However, this is not applicable in my case, as the key is not present.
I don't think that this can be a problem with the network, because:
    a) this works fine from a different computer, running XP,
    b) I have in fact seen this working on this computer, but just once, straight after a system restore, and I can't replicate the success by doing another system restore.
    c) If it were a problem with the network, you would expect Windows to fail gracefully.
    Additionally:
    - Disabling the firewall doesn't help.
    - Disabling the antivirus software (AVG) doesn't help.
    - Doing a clean boot doesn't help.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

  • Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.

  • Windows Install fails to detect VSTO 4.0 in Windows machine

I’ve to install excel based application developed in VS 2010.
Windows installer fails while detecting VSTO in Windows 7/8/8.1. Its perquisites are .Net framework 4.0 client frame work and VSTO 4.0.
Even we have installed VSTO manually and re-run our setup and again we are getting the same error (“Installer was not able to automatically download the VSTO installation”), the custom message. Don’t know what is blocking to detect VSTO on some particular
machine. I'm using only this condition "VSTORUNTIMEREDIST>="10.0.30319" as in Launch Conditions from last 3 years.
Now from last couple of months I'm getting this error when instating my application, somehow when I add another condition i.e. VSTORUNTIMEREDIST>="10.0.30319" OR OFFICERUNTIME>=”10.0.21022”, it works properly.
I want to know that is there any windows patch is released due to which my installer is not able to detect VSTO in machine.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks Utshek Jain

I have never seen the client profile mentioned in MSDN. For example, take a look at the
