Windows 8 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) won't start after update

Hi everybody,
I need Windows for a couple of applications so I set up a virtual machine with VirtualBox. It has been running flawless so far.
After my last update of the system, Windows does not start completely. It starts the automatic repair thing and shuts down after a few seconds. After that I changed some settings to see whether they show any effect - no success (IIRC I used to have some issues with 2D and 3D acceleration, but they were gone after I disabled them).
No error message is displayed.
Does anybody have an idea what could be wrong?

Which system did you update? Windows or Arch Linux?
If Arch Linux, which packages did you update? Does Windows start if you downgrade those packages?

  • [SOLVED] X won't start after update

I'm running Arch inside a virtual machine, with Virtualbox.
I ran 'sudo pacman -Syu' and let it install everything. It updated a bunch of xorg-* packages, among a few other things, and then I rebooted. Now it seems like X has stopped working. Normally I use SLiM for starting X, but SLiM itself isn't starting up. I tried 'startx' manually but that didn't work either. I can get into a normal CLI-environment just fine though.
    Here are pacman.log: http://ix.io/4MK and Xorg.0.log: http://ix.io/4MJ
I notice the errors in Xorg.0.log but I'm not sure what to make of them.
I'm not sure what else to add here, I hope I'm not missing something obvious.

I had this problem when I similarly made this update. I'm running Arch on a Dell Inspiron 1100, after the update X wouldn't start. I attempted to roll back to previous versions (as stipulated here and seeing as I had them in my cache) to no avail (gave up in frustration). Finally, I was able to get into X in two different ways:
First, I removed xf86-video-intel and installed xf86-video-vesa, when I rebooted I added the i915.modeset=0 parameter to the boot options at runtime in GRUB. For whatever reason X wouldn't load if I allowed the modeset to happen (bigger console area). This enabled me to boot into a slower X which I was still dissatisfied with, but at the very least it allowed me to isolate the problem as the intel driver as everything else is fully up to date.
Second, I created /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with the following contents:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "NoAccel" "True"
    EndSection
This also meant switching back to xf86-video-intel (instead of using xf86-video-vesa) for X. I tried both the "uxa" (supposed to be default) and "sna" options for "AccelMethod" and neither worked, only explicitly using the "NoAccel" "True" option allowed me to get X to function anew. In this manner I don't have to disable the modeset option during boot in GRUB and I'm still utilizing the latest intel driver.
The only inference (albeit perhaps misguided or ignorant) I can make is that something changed in UXA that broke how it worked before (I say this because this laptop is too old to support SNA).

  • VMs won't start after updates and reboot.

    I need some help.
I installed the November 2014 MS updates last night. I installed them on my lab Hyper-V box. The Hyper-V box is joined to a domain but is not a domain controller. It is Server 2012R2 with Hyper-V with all previous patches applied. I had two VMs configured
on the box. The VMs were a 2012R2 server and a Windows 8.1 box. Both were running fine. In fact I shut them down before I did the Microsoft Updates on the server.
The issue I describe below was not present until I did the updates and rebooted. The server and the associated VMs had been running fine for months. These updates are the ones that my SUS server provided to this server.
After I rebooted the server I could not restart either VM. I kept getting the same error that is listed below. I tried DELETING the VM from Hyper-V manager and then building a new VM and using the old vhdx. Again NO LUCK. I even tried CREATING a new VM and
    I got the same problem.
(Additional Note: I appeared as though I was able to delete the VM from Hyper-V Manager. Hyper-V Manager displayed 'Destroying....' for some period of time and then the VM was removed from Hyper-V Manager. However, recreating the VM did not solve the problem.)
Each time I get the following error displayed on screen.
    'Unnamed VM' could not intiialize.
An attempt to read or update virtual machine configuration failed
'Unnamed VM' could not initialize (Virtual Machine ID)

I adjusted permissions on the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V folder. Opened it up to "Authenticated Users" based on a couple of TechNet articles that I found. NO luck
In the Hyper-V Config log I get the following entry,
The configuration store at'' is not accessible Unspecified error(0x80004005)

I also had these errors in the Windows Application log.

  • ITunes won't start after update

    Hi,
I just upgraded my ITunes using the normal Apple update process when I was prompted - and now I-Tunes won't start at all.
I can see the ITunes.exe start in Windows Task Manager....then it just shuts down again.
    Any ideas ?

    I tried another solution :
    1. Un-install I-Tunes
    2. In-install Bonjour
    3. Reboot
    4. Install latest I-Tunes
This seems to have fixed the problem.
So it looks like BONJOUR IS THE PROBLEM.

  • Firefox won't start after updating

Firefox recently completed an auto-update, however now the software won't load.
If I click on the Firefox icon, I get the Windows egg timer for about 10 seconds, then the pointer reverts to normal and nothing happens. If I open Task Manager at the same time, when I click on the Firefox icon, I see the application listed for approximately 5 seconds, then it's removed from the list.
I have tried running in compatibility mode, as well as removing and re-installing, neither of which have helped.
    Can you advise, please ?

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Same problem after pacman -Syu (using XFCE).
Not only compiz won't start, my mouse cursor is gone until I open some windows.  The window decorations have disappeared (minimize, maximize, close).  This is even after removing the fusion-icon from autostart in XFCE and rebooting (afaict, compiz is not running as a process when I list running processes with ps -ef).  Also having difficulty switching focus between open windows.

  • IWeb won't start after update

    Hey!
I just ran a bunch of system updates and now iWeb won't start. I reinstalled iLife'06 from the DVD and rebooted, but no luck. I have also repaired permissions and rebooted. I just get one bounce in the Dock and this message in the iWeb.crash.log:
    Host Name: Garry-Computer.local
    Date/Time: 2006-03-30 04:09:56 -0500

Sounds like something major is missing from iWeb or from the iLife install.
If you didn't delete iWeb and the install package receipts from your computer before reinstalling iLife, iWeb would have only been updated. If it was corrupted before the update, the problem would not have been fixed by a reinstall.
Backup your domain file before doing anything else! It's in username/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Put a copy in a safe place.
Then try deleting everything to do with iWeb from your computer, going to drivename/Library/Receipts and deleting all the iWeb package receipts, empty the trash.
    Reinstall iWeb.

I'm not sure my issue is really the same one, but am hoping for some guidance here if possible.  Trying to start GDM gives me the same error message/screen.  After tdm fails I can switch to a console,
    sudo systemctl stop gdm.service
    then
    sudo systemctl start lightdm.service
and lightdm starts fine.  However, trying to log in to gnome-session gives me the very same error as I had with GDM.  I can log into XFCE just fine.  Attempting to start gnome-ession via startx also gives me the error screen.  Does anyone know how I can diagnose the problem?  Thanks,

  • Mac won't start after update to Yosemite

After updating my MacBook Pro 13" to Mac OS X Yosemite, it became so slow (only went to the Apple Community after this problem and found other users experienced the same) so I restarted it. Because restarting, too, took a while, I shut it down by holding down the power button instead. Now, when I boot my Mac, it shows the Apple logo with the progress bar but it goes up to about one-fourth progress then shows an error/stop icon. Can't get through the login screen. How do I fix this?

Solved by going back to 3.5.10. All settings and bookmarks came back. Won't be upgrading again anytime soon - or will be switching to Chrome!

  • IMovie won't start after update to 7.1

Just installed the update this morning, and iMovie won't start up any more...
I searched here but there are so many things that come up... but none of which look like this problem.
I've trashed prefs, restarted... nada. Didn't try reinstalling and -not- updating yet.
    Any help appreciated-
    thanks,
    Andrew

had the same problem with my iMovie and thanks to this discussion, i removed 3 DivX Plug Ins, restarted and iMovie worked fine.
dragged back the latest DivX Plug In (6.4.0) and iMovie's still running ok.
i'm guessing the culprit's either the Decoder 6.0.5 and/or DivX 5, both of which were also installed and now removed.
    i still have Flip4Mac installed in Library/QuickTime.
