Windows 8 install killed M58p Motherboard

I was running a Thinkcentre M58p (9965) with Windows 7 just fine for a few years.  I disconnected my hard drive and put in a blank one.  I then proceeded to install Windows 8.1 Enterprise.  The install went fine, did a few updates and restarted.  When the system came back up, I entered the activation key and installed about a half dozen updates.  The system did all the normal update installs, shutdown...then NOTHING.  No restart; it stayed off.  No splash screen (no picture at all for that matter), no POST beep.  I get a few seconds of fan test and then the system shuts off. I ended up removing ALL extra hardware.  The only things left was the RAM, keyboard (PS/2) and monitor (connected to the on-board video). Nothing.  Clearing the BIOS did not help.  I downloaded the Flash BIOS ISO, set the clear CMOS jumper, reconnected the CDROM and was able to boot the CD. There was still no picture through the process, but I did get some random beeps.  Afer a few minutes the process completed, I moved the clear CMOS jumper back to the normal position. Nothing.  The fans spin up, stay on for a few seconds, then the system shuts down. No POST beep, no picture.
I relayed my experience to a friend who insisted he didn't believe it was Windows 8 that caused the problem.  The next day, he informed me he took one of his older Lenovo systems that was running Ubuntu v13 and upgraded to v14. His system also died on restart with all the same symptoms.
My first question is: since clearing CMOS and reflashing the BIOS didn't work, there must be a way to either reset or reflash the "protected" BIOS area.  What it appears to me is that, in at least my case, Windows 8 wrote the activation code to the BIOS, overwriting some critical area that normally cannot be (easily) reset.  I firmly believe there is nothing physically wrong with the motherboard.  I also noticed a number of undocumented jumpers and headers (CL_CMOSHW, CL_CMOSHW2, LEO_CHIP, C1).  Might one of these clear the issue?  If not, can some kind of "factory" utility be obtained to reset all the firmware back to its initial settings?
Second, while it's true this is an older system, the specs are more than enough to run Windows 8.  And even though it isn't on the "tested" list, the worst thing I would expect to happen is that Windows 8 (or even current Linux distros) would not run, not turn the computer into a brick.  Given this, will Lenovo come out with a BIOS update for systems to patch this problem?  I used to have a high regard for Lenovo systems and they were on my short list of systems recommened to clients.  But if systems only a couple years out of warranty can unexpectedly be turned into bricks at an OS update, I cannot continue to recommend them for any use.  It's one thing to say, "Sorry, the new software won't run on your old system.", but it's quite another to say, "Sorry, you tried to get further use out of our product so it must now self destruct."
Any help getting this MB back up would be great. At least if there were a way to bring the system back up, I could test for a work-around if the option of getting a BIOS fix was unavailable.

Iosmem,
I really do appreciate you trying to help, but again, I don't think you really read my post as it does detail suggestions you made were done.
No, there is NO POST BEEP.  The fans come on at power up, spin for a few seconds, then the system shuts down. No boot is possible, other than booting the flash BIOS CD when the jumper is in the clear CMOS position.
Yes, all non-essential devices were removed.  The only things attached are RAM, CD-ROM drive, monitor (to onboard video) and keyboard.
Yes, the CMOS battery was checked.
Yes, the RAM was checked.
No, the flash BIOS CD does NOT reflash protected areas of the BIOS (anti-theft area being one example).
Yes, this is probably not an issue with Windows 8, per se, as evidenced to the fact another Lenovo system suffered the same fate when upgrading Ubuntu.  This is (and verified by another non-Lenovo tech), that Lenovo systems actually have this issue due to the way Lenovo emplements their BIOS.
It would be my hope that someone from Lenovo can shed some light on this since they will not accept opening a ticket unless the system is under warranty (which ran out a few months ago).
Lastly, as I mentioned, I recommend systems for clients, but Lenovo is going to be on my avoid-at-all-costs lists (it used to be near the top of my recommend list) if I can't even get an answer (even if that answer is "yes, some models do that and it requires a factory fix") on this after a month.

Is it possible to install ESXi 5.5 on a PC I5 3770K with windows 7, 64bits and motherboard asus Z77 ?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    Here's the follow up:
I took a chance and installed MAC OS X 10.4.9 COMBO and QT 7.1.6 update, installed FCS 2 suite and my old TRV 340 still works perfectly.
I erased livetype included with FCE HD as suggested by apple tech note, and the installing process worked like a charm.
I keep my version of FCE HD 3.5.1 and original soundtrack . Both applications work well side by side with FCP 6.
    Great.

Photoshop only has one Color Palette.  If you could script something  like a Color Palette with  two sets of active sliders the script would be in control till you dismissed its sliders dialog.  You would not be able to do anything but adjust the script's sliders in Photoshop while the script dialog window is being displayed.  Photoshop Scripting does not have real palette dialog type support.
I do not know what is possible with Photoshop extensions using HTML 5 Panels.....

  • K8N Neo4-FI Windows install problems (S-Ata problems)

    Hi
Last week I "upgraded" my computer from Nforce3 (Radeon 9800 Pro) to Nforce4 (Radeon X800GTO) and when I did setup everything the platinum screen just hang but after removing all usb devices and tried to plug one after one in to the computer I located the problem the motherboard didnt like my keyboard so I changed it and I was able to boot, but then another problem came, I cant install windows XP at all, after booting with the cd this white text "checking something computer configuration" and then everything gets black and nothing more happens,
I tried to change memory from (Corsair 3200XL to some other) and still the same problem, did also try to unplug the hdd, floppy and also tried to change the Graphic card from X800GTO to X600 but still no luck.
What can be wrong, I managed to install windows 2003 sever but I really hate when something doesnt work, doesnt feel ok
    EDIT:
    I have a 3200+ Winchester cpu, 1024 Corsair 3200XL mem and Tagan 430W psu and Connect3d X800 GTO Graphic
    EDIT2:
I have now located the problem to my S-ata discs, when I unplug them the install starts but when I plug them back I get the same problem, Im not running raid

I suggested what I did because the black screen on Windows install is a common problem when RAID is set to enabled on a NON-RAID array.
One other possibility: ke84 are you installing Windows XP? - and what version is it?  If it is pre-SP1 it may have trouble understanding what SATA is.  If it is SP1 or later is should work fine without installation of any extra drivers, so long as RAID is set to DISABLED.
I would still try installng on a single disk, connected to SATA-1 on the mainboard, before considering the above problem.  If one disk doesn't work, try the other.

  • How can i make the volume controller on a pavillion dv4 work after a clean windows install?

    Hello!
Recently I performed a clean windows 7 install from a windows install disk I previously owned, the problem is that this disk didn't intalled the drivers and programs specific for this computer. What I want to know is which driver or program I need to install to make the volume controller on my computer to work again? The problem is that the volume bar that previously appeared on the screen and the "bing" sound indicating the volume level doesn't appear or sound now.
All other things seem to work fine, this is the only problem so far.
    Thanks!

  • Boot Camp Windows install format to NTFS not working.

As a preface I am new to Apple and more complex computer issues in general. With that said I have spent several hours trying to get Windows 8.1 installed from the DVD media to a partition created using Boot Camp Assistant. I have tried several suggestions and looked through many threads, blogs and articles and none seem to have the correct answer. Below are the steps that I have followed and the issue that I run into every time.
    Open Boot Camp Assistant
Select Download the latest Windows support software from Apple
Select Install Windows 7 or later version
Download support software to USB Drive (leave connected)
         Create a Partition (200GB)
Hold Option on Reboot and Select Windows
    Begin the Windows install process
Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
Installation asks: Where do you want to install Windows?
Select Drive 0 partition 4: BOOTCAMP
         Error Message Details:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.
Solution I found from many threads is that I need to "Format" the partition. To do so I:
Select Drive 0 Partition 4: BOOTCAMP
         Select Format
Select Drive 0 Partition 4 (No longer titled as BOOTCAMP after the reformat)
              Error Message Details:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
I cant seem to find a solution to this. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried removing all other connected drives and devices, and recreating the partition several times with no luck.
    Machine Info:
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Mac (27-inch, Late 2013)
Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I also have VMware Fusion installed on the machine and already used the Windows installation media to create a virtual machine. Is it possible to transfer my virtual machine to a Boot Camp partition? I did a little research and it looks as though thats not possible (at least not easily) but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm still working to get a solution so any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
The installation media I purchased is for windows 8.1. Is that the issue? Do I need to install 8 not 8.1?

  • Problems with Windows install and erasing Boot camp partition.

I recently decided I'd try running a copy of XP on my Macbook, the only reason being that the software for my OU work is only available on Windows. I used Boot camp assistant to partition my hard drive which went smoothly. When I tried to install Windows, I get to the Windows install screen, and it says "Press enter to begin installation". Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't seem to work, so obviously I can't begin the installation. I've tried using my old Apple USD keyboard, but it didn't make any difference. I thought I'd try the whole process from scratch, but found I can't erase the original partition. I've read that you should use Boot camp assistant again, but when I press the continue key, I get the message:
"The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
Does anybody know a way of sorting either of these problems out? Much appreciated.

I've been doing a bit more reading into the problem. I think the keyboard problem's because I'm not using the SP2 version on XP. So hopefully once I get a copy, I should be able to sort it. But I still can't seem to use BCA to erase the partition.

    Hi David,
Thanks for getting back to me.  One question, Do I need to install CMS seperately or the does
         the BusinessObjects installs it?
When I did the BusinessObjects install it installed the Microsoft SQL server 2008 Express and created an
SQL Server Instance named BOE140.  I checked with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (which I downloaded from Microsoft) and saw that no tables were created.
         Regarding the message
"(.\crypto.cpp:199). (FALSE : digest exception: The FIPS140 shared library could not be found (10027))."
listed in the log file above,  what is my system missing.
Looks like CMS is not getting installed.
I am doing the install on a VMware Windows 2008 system with 8 GB ram and 50 GB file space.
Are there any special requirements of configuration on the Windows system?
         Thanks for your help,

  • How to setup the windows installed pxi to RT target

how to setup the windows installed pxi to RT target?

    Ranjith,
I think the answer for your 1st que is NO. In the sense, you can run the code, but it may not work precisely as it is supposed to...
A target can be said to be an RT, if & only if it has an RTOS installed in it, not just Windows, which is not a real-time OS.
Youcan run the existing code in Windows, but as I said earlier, it may not give you the actual results.
Finally, hereafter, pl dont use the term 'box' for a PXI. It is a chassis with a main module that runs on Windows or an embedded RT processor/conrtoller that runs on an RTOS like VxWorks or Phsr Lap.
Hope this helps you to some extent...

If you already have Windows on a DVD or USB drive, you don't have to tick that option. That's only for people who have Windows on a ISO file and have to burn it into a USB drive

  • Updating ipod on fresh Windows install without losing data?

    Hey guys.
I have an 80gb iPod Classic, and my iTunes had about 72gb worth of data in the playlist. Recently I had to reformat my system drive and do a fresh Windows install, and as such my iTunes playlist obviously got wiped. If I readd everything that was on my iPod into the playlist, will iTunes try to wipe my iPod and transfer everything over again, or will it recognize that the files are exactly the same and only copy the new files over that weren't originally on it?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once the iPod is in manual mode you can add to it without losing any content but you will have to drag it from the library yourself: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
However once you are safely connected you can copy content from the iPod to iTunes. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Daren't sync iPhone to new Windows install. HELP

My old Windows installation was recently plagued by a virus, and as such I had to back everything up, and re-install. I've retrieved all my music off of my iPod Classic, no problems there. Set the iPod to manual, no stupid iTunes wiping.
I also have a first gen iPhone, running 2.1, synced with the old library and not this one. I daren't plug it in due to fear of having it wiped, which would be disastrous as it's the only copy of all my contacts. Photos and music I can re-sync by hand happily. But somebody please tell me it won't wipe all of my contacts, predictive text, text history, apps etc. Is there any way of making it a manual device like the iPod, and only change what I WANT to change?
Help needed, Thank You in advance.

Oh believe me I'd LOVE a Mac. I'd use Linux if I could, but with the iPod and iPhone I need iTunes. My brother has a MacBook, excellent piece of kit. Mac's my favourite OS, stable and pretty. But I've recently bought a crap load of Photo equipment so I have no real money left lol.
I'd have done an iTunes backup, but I couldn't actually open iTunes. I got all my Photos off the old pc, so that's fine. I just accept a Windows install won't last me that long at any one time. It's a sad fact of life.
I think what I'll do is just manually enter my contacts into Outlook, and then just sync with this library, as long as I have my contacts I'm not fussed, the music needs sorting through on it anyway.
It will work if I put my contacts into Outlook and then sync with this new install won't it?
