Windows 8 making thinkpad X61s C2Duo L7500 (default 1.6GHz) runs at 1.8GHz

Hi!
My laptop is a thinkpad X61s C2Duo L7500, wich current CPU frequency is 1.6GHz.
I installed Windows 8 and noticed something strange:
The CPU is running at the maximum of 1.8GHz.
Screens:
Running on balanced performance energy plan:
Image 1
Running on high performance energy plan:
Image 2
Energy plans are the defaults of Win8, not customized.
BIOS is at default values.
The CPU frequency goes up 1.8GHz both on balanced performance and high performance energy plans. as obvious, on high performance it happens regularly, while on balanced performance it goes up to 1.8GHz just sometimes.
Although that problem, my X61s is running windows Windows 8 well. It just had 3 BSODs, but I'm pretty sure should be caused by the higher CPU frequency.
Have anyone noticed the same problem?
There is any fix or workaround to solve it?
I'm afraid that my CPU could be damaged if I use it for a very long time.
Thanks!

Thanks CharlyAR!
So, i finally found out I was completely wrong :-(
Here are Intel L7500 Specs:
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLA3R.html
It says it runs at 1.8GHz on IDA mode.
There is a feature called IDA:
Intel Dynamic Acceleration technology (IDA) is a feature that boosts CPU performance when the CPU is running single-threaded applications. This is achieved by temporary increasing frequency of one CPU core when another CPU core is idle, i.e. when the second CPU core is in Deep Sleep or lower power state. How much the frequency is increased depends on front-side bus speed of the CPU:
533 MHz FSB - by 133 MHz
800 MHz FSB - by 200 MHz
1066 MHz FSB - by 133 or 266 MHz
This feature was introduced in Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile microprocessor family and is applicable only to dual-core CPUs. Quad-core processors incorporate Dual Dynamic Acceleration feature, which works similar to IDA. Newer Intel microprocessors based on Nehalem core utilize improved version of IDA called Turbo Boost Technology.
http://www.cpu-world.com/Glossary/D/Dynamic_Acceleration_technology.html
So, I reverted all my energy plans to the default states and now I'm running it without being afraid ;-)

    Get X running:
    pacman -S xorg xf86-video-intel hwd
hwd -xa (will autoconfig a xorg.conf)
    Editing the autoconfigured xorg.
nano /.../X11/xorg.conf (forgot what folder xorg.conf is placed in)
In xorg.conf you can change the keyboard layout to "thinkpad60" and scroll to the bottom and change the color depth to 24bit.
And now you should be able to start X.
Getting the wireless wifi to work.
pacman -S iwlwifi-4965-ucode (the popper wifi drivers)
Changing the sensitivity and speed of the trackpoint
    echo -n 250 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/sensitivity
    echo -n 160 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/speed
Put this in your rc.local . 250&160 are the numbers that decides what sensitivity and speed the trackpoint will have. And you can of course change them after your demands.

zorg wrote:Hi, is there an arch-newbie friendly account of how to install arch on a X61, somewhere ?
I'd like to try Arch but I wonder if that might not be a bit too much for me to chew and whether I should go with something more beginner friendly like Ubuntu ?
    Hi zorg -
This is my first post on the Arch forums. I am a seasoned windows systems engineer with passable *nix skills. I recently (not sure what came over me) decided to give Linux a shot and started out with Ubuntu. It was ok but as a command line guy and someone who likes to do stuff manually and automate his environment, I didn't appreciate all the "autoconfig" and wizards in Ubuntu. I am also a rogue individual by nature and try to blaze my own trail so I wanted to use something different. Next distro I tried was Mepis, which is excellent for beginners and I actually liked it but had a lot of issues with hardware compatibility. I only had it running about a week but I can say that it is an excellent inroad into Linux and very easy to setup.
Now on to Arch What drew me (and countless others) to this distro was a few simple principles:
    1. By and large, the EXTREMELY detailed and well organized documentation. I have learned so much not just about Arch but about Linux in general by reading these Wiki's, many of them several times over.
    2. Choice. You get to choose what you want. Arch is a bare-bones install and comes with limited software/addons. It also comes with no gui bu default. Everything that goes on the system is a choice you get to make personally. This might be viewed as a downside by some but for me it is a huge plus. It may seem complicated and scary to a newbie but it is my opinion that, coupled with the excellent documentation, it is actually very newbie friendly (assuming you are willing to tinker a bit and download/edit some files). Arch Linux developers and users believe that trying to hide the complexities of a system actually results in an even more complex system, and is therefore to be avoided.
    3. Everything just works. Hardware was detected easily, wireless worked relatively easily, dual monitors, etc.
    4. Stability. Arch is one of the more stable distros and is well supported. It is also a "rolling release" distribution which means you can update as often or not as you please.
    5. Arch is smoking fast! (boots up in less than 30 seconds).
I have been running Arch on my office desktop for two weeks now and I am loving it. Compiz is quite nice as well and puts MS Aero to shame. I even installed it on an old T43 Thinkpad lying around at home. I run it as a server with no DE (uses just 40MB RAM!)
I'll try to post more later but I do recommend you at least give Arch a try and let everyone know how it goes.

  • Backup (target) location on Thinkpad x61 ?

     Hi !
    I'm using Thinkpad x61.
I've just run the backup utility from ThinkVantage Productivity Center. After completion of the backup, my harddisk is only left 4% of disk space. I'd like to delete the backup file but I can't find the location of the backup datas. And pls advice me how can I edit the backup setting.
Pls someone help me how can I partation the harddisk. My thinkpad is running windows vista business.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Dawei

    jessanova, welcome to the forum,
in the advanced settings of R&R you should have the option to show and copy backups from the hard drive. If you plan to copy them to an USB hard drive please ensure that the that drive is attached before boot. You should also create a rescue cd, Start > Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media - different to Create Product Recovery Media which are factory restore discs.
Should you at any time update R&R please ensure you read the notes on whether or not the newer version is downwards compatible. i.e. don't let System Update do it automatically untill you have visited here.
    Hope this helps

  • Thinkpad X61 screen not working after driver install?

Recently I decided to change my operating system on my Thinkpad X61 so I completly refreshed the system and installed Windows 7 . I finished the install and it seemed to boot properly . As I began to install my drivers via the Lenovo website it asked for a RESART. After restarting the PC it wouldnt show a screen . I've tried to connect to another output and that didnt work.
As for the motherboard theory I honestly dont think that is the problem because I've seen several people on several forums discuss the same problem and they've found a solution but I cant seem to get anyone to discuss what that solution was.
I am a student so I am in need of my computer so if someone could please help me as soon as possible.
Moderator note; moved to correct board

Are you really talking about X61? If so, this is the wrong forum, but regardless, here is what to do. Pull the battery out. Unplug the machine, and press the power button several times, holding it for 5 seconds the last time. Put the battery back and plug it in. Turn it on and try to boot into the BIOS. If the screen stays black, either the screen or the motherboard has died. If you can plug it into an external monitor and try again, you can tell which one it is.

  • [solved] Thinkpad x61 w/ /boot on external USB can't see internal hdd

    Hi all,
EDIT: Fixed it. I had to boot the install media and re-run mkinitcpio -p linux. Not sure if I forgot to do that the first time or if something changed...
I have my /boot partition on an external USB key. I installed grub on that key. My main disk is supposed to be encrypted, and is internal in my Thinkpad x61. When I boot with this setup, grub can't find the system disk. I get dumped to a recovery console, and lsblk just shows the USB key.
If I plug the internal drive in via a USB-SATA converter, everything works as it is supposed to.
It seems like when the thinkpad boots from the USB key it isn't turning on the internal drive or making it available to linux. Has anyone seen something like this?
When I boot the arch installation media from USB I can see the internal drive right away. Is there a way to figure out what the installation boot is doing that I'm not on my regular system?
    Thanks in advance,
    Lefty

  • PC3-10600 memory modules in ThinkPad x61?

    Hey everyone,
I own two thinkpads: X61 and T60. A friend of mine upgraded his thinkpad to 8 GB RAM, from 4, and offered to give me the Elpida memory modules. It's 4GB. I now have 4 GB in the X61, and 2 GB in the T60. I was thinking of installing the memory my friend gave me on the X61, and putting the current X61 modules in the T60, but the modules he gave me are pc3-10600. Will this run ok in the x61? I realize that is not going to run at the rated speed, but will it run ok, without any problems?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am pretty sure that both the T60 and X61 use DDR2 memory. What your friend gave you is DDR3 memory, which is not compatible, as they are not electrically or physically compatible.
Compare your ram with the one your friend gave you, you will see the "notch" is in a different place, preventing accidental mixup.

What is the biggest and fastest hard drive I can put into my Thinkpad X61 (type 7673-AG2)?
Here's someone who used a Seagate Monentus:
I'm surprised that the vintage 2007 core2duo Thinkpad X61 supports Sata 3Gb/s.  Has it been around that long?
The Lenovo X61 product detail support page  does not say which revisions of SATA it supports:
The X61 hardware maintenance manual just says "SATA interface".

This is all very Greek to me. Is it really this hard just to get the cursor to appear in the main search window when Google.com is one's default home page?
I don't really know much about Firefox extensions. My list includes Adblock Plus 1.3.8; Duplicate This Tab 1.2; Java Console 6.0.25; Java Quick Starter 1.0; Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 0.0.0; New Tab Homepage 0.4.3. Nothing unusual is indicated for either Java item, Console having been updated 4/27/2011.

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

    Question:
    1) Does moving the tables to another tablespace
SIGNIFICANT better than moving the tables to the same
tablespace for the purpose of re-org? As i can see
that moving to the same tablespace don't help much.If you create LMT ( Locally manage tablespace) and move table to LMT , it will improve performance. Also collect stats for table after major update/delete/insert.
    2) As for my case, my filesystem do not have enuff
space for the new tablespace to cater for the 400

Yes, there is no other solution if space is not there

    Hi,
As usual, it is strongly recommended to backup all important data prior to upgrading any operating system. It is also strongly recommended to verify all currently used hardware and software with the Windows 7 Compatibility Center.
Depending on if you are moving from Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista there are two different types of installations that can be performed when migrating to Microsoft Windows 7.
First, it is important to note that there is not an in-place upgrade from Microsoft Windows XP to Windows 7. Instead of an upgrade, there is a type of installation known as a “custom” installation. This option for installation is also available when moving from Windows Vista. A custom installation will attempt to back up your data files and bring them over to Windows 7 in what is known as a “windows.old” folder however this is considered to be a clean installation. Your applications that were installed prior to Windows 7 will require reinstallation. You may find the following resource Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 helpful.
If moving from Windows Vista, there is an option for an upgrade installation. The upgrade installation must be initiated from within Windows Vista. You may find the following resource Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 helpful.

I personally would be a little sceptical about that offer. They describe the board as "BRAND NEW - NEVER USED OR INSTALLED", and "You will receive the motherboard (what you see in the photo) ONLY".
I see a fan and the pcmcia slot assy attached to the mainboard in that photo , these are separate parts and are not delivered with the board when originally ordered though IBM part sales.
Maybe I'm interpreting their add wrongly, but I'd certainly ask the question beforehand.
