Windows 8 question

I suppose someone will lock this thread, telling me that this is not the right forum. But I'm going to ask anyway.
I'm considering getting a new computer. I will not go to the Mac. I know, those who use it are convinced it is a better system. I'm using Windows 7, 32 bit, 4 GB ram, Lightroom 4.2, Photoshop CS6. Everything runs fine, a little slow, and occasionally I get out of memory errors in Photoshop. I spend several hours each week using those programs.
I'm thinking of moving to a 64 bit system, 8 GB ram. But here's my dilemma. I have a disability, and will not use the touch screen features Windows 8. I'm shaky, and I've tried using iPads and it just isn't going to work. I would try to describe how I manipulate the mouse, but you would be convinced that I'm crazy. All I can say is that I have developed computer skills that have worked for me for nearly 30 years and have provided me with employment.
Now, the question. Is there a compelling reason for me to have Windows 8? Everything that I have watched has indicated that it's not as friendly for using a mouse. And since I use a Trackball, and will continue using a Trackball, is there any reason that I would want Windows 8?

To answer your basic question, NO, there is not a compelling reason to upgrade to Windows 8 if you were not planning to get a new computer. But since you are considering getting a new computer, I would suggest you go with Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. I also suggest you get Windows 8 Pro even you keep you same machine and just upgrade you OS to 64-bit. I have used it as my primary OS since March, using both the Consumer Preview and the Release Preview. And now I am downloading the final version. There is a learning curve--but I believe once you get the basics, you will enjoy it. I primary use PS CS6, LR4 and MS office with a keyboard and mouse. I do not use the touch features at all, primarily because I don't have touch-capable hardware. There are many features that Windows 8 has that Windows 7 does not (e.g. File History, Storage Spaces, very quick startup), just to name a few. But rather than take mine or the previous respondants advise, I suggest you get the Release Candidate (I'm not sure you can still download from MS) or the RTM, setup a dual boot situation and just try it!

I have for that some questions. I have oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on a windows 2003 server running with one local database - no real apllication cluster.
I don't understand which instructions I have to make for oracle upgrade?
Must I also make the 3. instruction? Connect to databse prior and drop?
Must I also make the post install action for my database?
(startup migrate ...)
what means at post install actions the following:
'execute these post install actions only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $oracle_homee.
My database path is e:\oracle\oradata\database my oracle path is e:\oracle\ora92 have I in my case make the post install actions?

1. When applying this patchset on Windows NT, XP or Windows 2000, you must log onto the system as a user with Administrative privileges
(e.g. as a user which is a member of the local Administrators group).
2. Unzip the downloaded patch set file into a new directory.
3. Drop the xmlconcat function by running the following commands:
drop public synonym xmlconcat;
drop function xmlconcat;
4. Shut down any existing Oracle Server instances in the ORACLE_HOME to be patched with normal or immediate priority. i.e.: Shutdown all instances (cleanly). Stop the database services, and stop all listener, agent and other Oracle processes running in or against the ORACLE_HOME to be installed into.
5. Perform the following pre-install steps for Real Application Clusters (RAC) enviroments only:
IN ADDITION TO STOPPING ALL ORACLE SERVICES IN THE ORACLE_HOME TO BE UPGRADED:
If you are running in a RAC enviroment, stop the following Windows service(s)/devices(s) using the Net Stop command:
Stop the Windows service named "OracleGSDService"
Stop the Windows service named "OracleCMService9i".
Stop the Windows device named "OraFenceService" (This Device does NOT show up as a Service in the Control Panel).
For Example:
C:\>net stop OracleGSDService
C:\>net stop OracleCMService9i
C:\>net stop OraFenceService
Once the above steps have been performed on all the nodes of the cluster, you should then be able to upgrade the OSD components to the 9.2.0.3 versions. This can be accomplished by...
xcopy all the files in the \Disk1\preinstall_rac\osd\*.* directory to the directory in which the OSD components were originally installed on all nodes(typically %SystemRoot%\system32\osd9i).
Note: You may also be able to look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle\OSD9i registry key to determine the directory in which the original OSD components were installed. Now the OSD components can be restarted on all the nodes in the cluster.
C:\>net start OraFenceService
C:\>net start OracleCMService9i
C:\>net start OracleGSDService
After all of the above steps have been completed on all the nodes of the cluster, you are now ready to proceed with the Oracle 9.2.0.3.0 patchset installation.
6. Start the installer:
If the current Installer version is less than 2.2.0.18.0 then download the Installer 2.2.0.18.0 from Oracle Metalink where it can be accessed with the bug number 2878462 and choosing the MS Windows NT/2000 Server platform, then run the setup.exe 2.2.0.18.0 from the C:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install directory .
7. You may install the Patch Set through either an interactive or a silent installation.
To perform an interactive installation using the Oracle Universal Installer graphical interface:
1. Start the installer from the newly installed OUI 2.2.0.18.0 by running the version of setup.exe located at C:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install and verify
that the version of the OUI GUI is 2.2.0.18.0 before proceeding.
2. Follow the steps given below within the installer:
1. On the Welcome screen, click the Next button. This will display the File Locations screen.
2. Click the Browse button for the Source... entry field and navigate to the stage directory where you unpacked
the Patch Set tar file.
3. Select the products.jar file. Click the Next button
The products file will be read and the installer will load the product definitions.
The products to be loaded will be displayed (verify ORACLE_HOME setting for this first).
4. Verify the products listed and then click on the Install button.
5. Once the installation has completed successfully, it will display End of Installation. Click on Exit and confirm
to exit the installer.
To perform a silent installation requiring no user intervention:
1. Copy the response file template provided in the response directory where you unpacked the Patch
Set tar file.
2. Edit the values for all fields labeled as "<Value Required>" according to the comments and examples
in the template.
3. From the unzipped patchset installation area, start the installer by running the setup executable passing
as the last argument the full path of the response file template you have edited locally with your own
value of ORACLE_HOME and FROM_LOCATION:
setup.exe -silent -responseFile <full_path_to_your_response_file>
Post Install Actions
Execute these "Post Install Actions" only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $ORACLE_HOME.
Important Notes
1: Java VM and XML DB Requirements
Users who have JVM (Java enabled) or JVM and XDB installed on their 9.2.0.1 databases should make sure that the init.ora parameters shared_pool_size and java_pool_size are each 150 MB or more before running the catpatch.sql upgrade script. Failure to do so could result in an unrecoverable memory failure during running of the script. Please note that JVM and XML DB was shipped as part of the default 9.2.0.1 seed database and will be present unless the user explicitly installed a 9.2.0.1 instance without them.
2: SYSTEM table space
If you have JServer installed in the database, you should check to be sure there is at least 10M of free space in the SYSTEM table space before running these actions.
3: Installing on Cluster Databases
If you are applying this patch set to a cluster database, then set the CLUSTER_DATABASE initialization parameter to false. After the post-install actions are completed, you must set this initialization parameter back to true.
To complete the installation of this patch set, you need to start up each database associated with the upgraded $ORACLE_HOME, start the database listener (e.g., lsnrctl start), login using SQL*Plus (e.g., sqlplus "/ as sysdba"), and run the following commands/scripts in order from $ORACLE_HOME within a MIGRATE session. If you are using the OLAP option, make sure that the database listener is up.

Review the patch.log file for errors and re-run the catpatch script after correcting any problems

This step is optional - it will recompile all invalid PL/SQL packages now rather than when accessed for the first time - you can also use utlrcmp.sql to parallelize this in multiprocessor machines:

Multiple im windows question.

i use the tabbed window view when im chatting it up with my friends. My problem is when im talking to more than 4-5 people it becomes increasingly annoying to constantly have to click on each persons name to respond. My question is: is there a way to quickly switch between members i am chatting with using a keyboard shortcut? any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I think apple/command + { or } key combination will advance or reverse your location through the chat tabs.
My iChat is currently out of commission or I would confirm this personally but if you could test it and report back that would be nice as well.

Mac and Windows Question

I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but it's the closest thing I could find to Apple software. As of now, I only own a Dell pc. When I can fork up enough money, I'm going to get a Mac, but until then, I was wondering if there was a name to the software that changes the screen according to the mouse's position. For example, if you move the mouse pointer into the upper right hand corner, all of the windows minimize, and if you put it in the bottom left, then you can choose which window you want to open. If anyone knows, please let me know. If anyone, on the off-chance, knows of a program that can do the same for windows, that would also be greatly appreciated. I wasn't sure if that was software or just part of the mac system, but it's really convenient and I'd appreciate it if someone got back to me. Thanks a bunch,

Maintenance Window Question

Hello Experts,
i'm sorry if its been already answered, I have a question on MW.
CollectionA---> has a MW set between 6PM - 6AM ( Monday - Sunday) ( which is set to ->This Schedule Applies to all deployments)
CollectionA---> has another MW 8PM-10PM ( Sat-Sunday) ( which is set to ->This schedule applies to Software deployments)
Since there is an overlap, what would happen when Software updates are pushed, Will it run on Sat or sun at 8PM or at 6PM.

It depends on the Deadline you set for the updates to install, as you have a maintenance windows that allows all deployments each night, software updates will run then. If you schedule them to start at saturday morning it will start at 6 PM SAT as that
maintenance windows has the eraliest start time and apply to all deployments.

Quickbooks/outlook/windows question

i have a new MBP 13" that i will be using for business. i will be running Quick books in windows/parallels . i would also like to run MS outlook with MS Office, my question is. do i need to get MS Office for Mac, or run regular MS Office in windows? my biggest concern would be to have the ability to email my invoices directly out of Quickbooks into Outlook. is this possible running MS Office for Mac to have the email for quickbooks in windows? any help would be great!

Had this problem. Solved this way. Went in settings, opened "mail, contacts, calendars," scrolled down to "default calendar" and made sure the exchange calendar was selected. Then went back to "mail, contacts, calendars" and opened "exchange" which is located right below "iCloud" in the accounts listings. Noticed that the "automatic reply" feature was showing as "loading." Turned off "mail" and then turned it on again, and "automatic reply" reset to "off." All my recently entered appointments started showing again. I think that when I had set my automatic reply feature a couple weeks back on my desktop, that feature had gotten stalled on the phone somehow.

I would like to have a button that when clicked once, redirects the page to a URL in a new tab. The URL is based on a sql query from a dynamic action linked to the button.
Way 1:
I have tried to use redirect_url() in the dynamic action itself.

But it didn't work at all.
So I tried ...
Way 2:
1. In the dynamic action set a page item value to the url. This is Action 1 of the dynamic action.

2. Submit the page. This is Action 2 of the dynamic action.
3. Action 3 of the dynamic action executes the following JavaScript code:

However, the problem is P33_URL_ITEM is not set the first time (or whenever the session is cleared), so that the button has to be clicked twice in order for the page to be redirected.
Not-important question: Does anyone know how to fix it so that only 1 click is needed?

Can't you set the P33_URL_ITEM page item in a on-load pl/sql process? It is difficult to give a precise answer unless I see what you are doing the page.
Way 3:

Directory Services and Windows Question

If this question has been asked before or if it seems really simple I am sorry. I have a client that has a small windows work group of XP machines. They want to move to a client server infrastructure but are not interested in the headaches involved in Windows licenses and have asked me about OS X Server on a Mac Mini. My question is if I create the users in the Mac server directory services can they use those usernames and passwords to log into their machines essentially making the Mac Mini run as a "Domain Controller" role or would those usernames and password only be used to authenticate to resources hosted on the Mini?

Actually, the same problems that existed in ARD 2 still exist in ARD 3 and make it difficult to make this useful with ActiveDirectory (but are not problematic in OpenDirectory). That problem is that ARD looks for a group named "ard_admin" (and others for other purposes), and when you make a group in AD it always gets prepended with your domain name (ie: DOMAINNAME\ard_admin).
The only way of handling this with ARD 2 was to create a local group named ard_admin and add the network users to it, or nest a group, but that only works with 10.4.3+. I asked this question to the project lead for ARD at Apple, and he dismissed this as a "OS issue"... not what I wanted to hear.
There is a work-arround for ARD 3 where you manually change the com.apple.remotedesktop preferences to include other groups, but this will only work if you do it manually for every computer unless you have OpenDirectory. The instructions for this are in the ARD 3 manual (page 62).

Creative Suite 6 Design and Web Premium Windows Question

Hi!
I am considering purchasing Creative Suite 6 Design and Web Premium Windows. The designer I work with does all of our work in the same program, only it is version 5. Before I make the purchase, I want to make sure the two versions are compatible. Will I be able to make changes to their work when they send it to me in version 5?
Also, where would I even begin to look for a class on how to use this product?

Yes, you can open up files from older versions in newer versions, it may just not always work the otehr way around. Your otehr question is too generic. We don't know what kind of work you do and pointing you to random tutorials may not at al lbe productive. If you feel so inclined, spend a little time looking up some basics video tutorials for the programs, but anything specific is best asked when you actually encounter the issues.

I am new to the ADF. If I want to create a page which has a button that open a new window. On the new window, user can update something and close the window. After the close of the new window, the parent window should be notified and do some action. How can I implement this logic in ADF. Please advise. Thank you

such window dependencies can only be handled if you use window.open in JavaScript so that you can build up a window handle that allows you to call back to the parent window. Question: Do you need a new window, or would a lightweigh popup do as well ? If yes, then this can be achieved easy and with no JavaScript, which should be seen as preferred

Mac vs windows question

Hi all,I know it is not the exact place for this question,but forgive me..I've tried anywhere really
so can somebody help?
my q is: How is it possible that mac opens application's package and show all resources xml-files etc..? Is it possible to view fils this way under windows?

In OS X Finder, Control or right click on the application and select 'Show Package Contents'. Unless you have third party software, Windows cannot see the files and folders on a Mac partition.

Browser window question

Hello.
When using iTunes I like having the browser window open at all times -- the one at the top with the three columns for genre, artist, and album.
This works fine for my computer-based iTunes library, but EVERY time I try to look at the sons on my iPod it defaults back to just a list. This happens even just exiting the iTunes application and restarting -- I don't have to disconnect and reconnect the iPod for it to happen.
So my question is how can I make the iPod song list view work like my computer song list, where the browser window is always there?

That's too bad because it used to work the way I'm wanting.
And I can activate the browser window when looking at the iPod -- it just won't STAY that way between successive launches of the iTunes application.

Command window question

Is there a way i can catch what is being displayed in the command window? I have a class that creates an instance of another and in this second class i have some System.out.printlnes - i need to display them in my swing app (first class) but cant since i dont know how to either get the 2nd class to pass it back to update the screen or how to get access on the command window.
My swing class extends JFrame and the second class does not extend anything .... the application starts running from the swing class ---- any ideas????

You can redirect System.out. Just call System.setOut(...), and add a new OutputStream. I think you would be able to use piped streams. Add a PipedOutputStream to System.out, and listen to the PipedInputStream you added to PipedOutputStream.
I think it would be easier if you just changed all your System.out.prints in the class to call a method on your frame calls.

Popup window question

Hi,
I did a Portal application using JSF and RAD 6.0 in the Portal page I have two portlets side by side the portlet in the right side has a link to open a popup window when I click in that link and the popup window opens the portlet in the left side is showing in the popup window is there any way to tell the popup np to show the portlet on the left side. I used jsf-popup

Here is how to open a TitleWindow and initialize some values
in the newly opened TitleWindow.

In the newly opened window you have to have a method
setParentRef that accepts a window as an argument. Store the parm
as a variable in the window.
There are other ways to do this .. this is just one of

Web Report - Variable window question

Hi Experts,
I am using the same web-template for a lot of reports. But when I switch between the query views for some of the reports, the variable window is popping up...and for some it isin't.Why is this happening? Should I be changing some prperties in the underlying Bex queries.I am on BI 7.0.

we need to go to Query properties -> interaction tab-> remove reuse variables to populate the variable screen everytime or "Save and reuse variable values" to supress variable window

Problem could be due to any personalisation.try this:
One the query is executed, click on the button which says change variable values.
In the variable pop-up screen which comes up click on the personalization button
In the new screen which comes up click on reset personalization button
Enter new variable values and execute the query.
