Windows 8 recovery disc #2 not working

Last week I ordered (and paid for) a set of Windows 8 Recovery Kit discs from hp.com. My HDD died and I couldn't get the recovery partition to load, so I purchased a new identical HDD and received the recovery discs before this past weekend.
I started the recovery process and everything was fine until it reached 60% complete while copying files to the new HDD, and got a pop up message that copying the file BASE23.SWM had failed. I retried it (as it doesn't give  you any other option) and after 15-20 minutes the error is reported again. I can hear the DVD drive spinning up and winding down during this time, so it sounds like the disc is damaged and it can't read part of the file. Meanwhile, I clean the disc (even though it looks brand new) and try again, still no joy.
So I take the disc and put it in my work laptop. With an external patch cable I attached the new HDD to my work laptop, and manually tried to copy the BASE23.SWM file to the HDD. The operation eventually goes into an infinite loop trying to copy the file. The same happens when I try to t copy the file to my work HDD (so I know it's not an issue with the new HDD). Also, other SWM files can be copied from the same disc, so it looks like the BASE23.SWM file is corrupt on this disc.
What's my next step? Is there a way to pull the BASE23.SWM file from the DVD or can I assume that file is corrupted?

I would phone HP Support to inform them of the error and request a replacement set of Recovery Discs.
******Clicking the Thumbs-Up button is a way to say -Thanks!.******

  • (Resolved) Windows 8 - Recovery Discs Do Not Work With New Hard Drive

    Update:
I decided to buy drive cloaning software.  I cloned my drive, that resolved the problem of installing the OS on the new drive.  Too bad neither HP's Restore disc's or this support fourm could help with this issue.
    Origional Post:
    Product Name:  HP Pavilion G4-2235DX
    Product Number:  C3Q50UAR#ABA
    BIOS:  Insyde F.26, 2/21/2013
    Processor: AMD A6-4400M APU w/ Radeon HD Graphics, 2700 Mhz, 2 Core(s)
    BIOS Mode:  UEFI
    SMBIOS Version:  2.7
    RAM:  12GB
    Operating System:  Windows 8 - 64bit (6.2.9200 Build 9200)
Situation:  I purchased this computer new as a refurbished model from a retail store.  I created system restore discs after initial setup using the HP Recovery Media Creation Utility.  This system has a 500 GB hard drive.  I purchased a Western Digital 1 TB hard drive to upgrade the drive in this notebook.  After swaping out the drives and trying to load the recovery onto the new 1TB hard drive in the same computer, an HP dialogue so states "This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs."  It gives a code (doesn't call it an error code) 0110-C3150UQ43#ABA underneath and only option is okay, the system reboots and follows the same pattern again and again.
I have upgraded drives in the past on Vista and 7 the same way using self created HP recovery discs with no issue, I do know what i'm doing.    I've seen discussion mentioning BIOS issues and other such problems.  I did try updating the BIOS to the one on the HP Support page (2013-03-01 , Version:F.26, 7.76M) and the recovery discs still will not work.  I found the CyberLink Recovery Discs Utility thread, however this solution/software has no support for Windows 8.  I have tried to run the utility and it fails, tried with compatiabity and it failed.  Why is this happening and what can be done to resolve this problem?
I tried using chat support but it won't let me get through to anyone, claiming my warranty is expired.  I just bought this computer 3 days ago and was assured a 90 day warranty.
    Please help, Thanks.

    Information on the warranty:
Refurbished computers are often erroneously marked as out of warranty, but it is simple to fix, and a phone representative could have corrected that for you. All computers' warranty start dates begin on the day they leave the factory. HP knows that there will be a period where the computer will sit on a shelf (for days or months) at the retailer. With refurbished computers, their 90-day warranties begin on the day they are refurbished. HP has no way of knowing what date the customer will buy the computer so the warranty start date stays the same until the customer registers the computer providing the date of purchase for the warranty system to be updated. If the registration process fails for some reason (rare, but it happens), phone technical support has a process they can initiate to have the warranty corrected. They only need a copy of the receipt showing the date of purchase.
I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again for you post!

Hello, I tried the free factory restore but it would not work.  I ordered the restore disk from Toshiba.  The instructions on the disc say to insert disk, then press "c" while turning on.  This does not work.  I have pressed f12 and booted from dvd/cd.  this did not work.  it starts downloading window files, windows emblem does it's little dance goes away and i'm left with a blank screen and my cursor.  Should i just throw the thing away or is there something else i can try.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  FYI-I have a Satellite L505-s5993/windows 7

  • Recovery discs do not work with new hard drive

Hi I have come here desperately seeking help as I am not too knowledgeable with the workings of computers and I have spent an incredible amount of time just trying to get my laptop to some level of functionality.  I purchased a HP Envy and it had a corrupt hard drive which would not work from day one, laptop was new.  After a year of constant pressure on HP they finally decided to replace it and let me choose any laptop so I went with the Beats Envy 14 as it was the best one offered from the selection.  Low and behold the thing would not work properly from day one, again my brother who is much more of an expert said that there was definitely a hard drive issue so for the past 3 years I have put up with a computer that constantly crashes with BSOD, where I have lost data on numerous occasions (only so often I can back up), that I have had to constantly reset the thing using HP recovery discs, and that generally cannot cope when performing multiple tasks.   HP are most certainly shocking builds from my experience.  Then just last week the hard drive just craps itself and the laptop no longer will boot up.  I took it to a guy to get it at leYst working again so he has installed a new hard drive but with an old version of Windows 7.  I want to go back to the Windows version I was akin to on the HP recovery disk , and essentially have it all set up as before except for now having a workable hard drive however I get the message:  "This computer is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.Error: 0100 - 3385 - 3078" I also tried out of interest to load my old Windows 7 disc I had and XP but had no success.  Tried booting from startup etc and various things suggested on help forums.  Please tell me I am not stuck with this version of windows.  Whilst the discs included Windows 7 it was a totally different version, this home premium one is terrible. Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

no they were both 500gb. I read about that already, I heard about creating a partition for recovery etc but this is all a bit above me , as I said I am not very technical when it comes to the working of a computer.  These discs worked perfectly before but now with the new hard drive will not load at all.  I essentially hate the Windows Home Premium verions the guy who fixed it put on, whilst the discs had Windows 7 on them the icons were way smaller, the desktop neater, the buttons different, everything was a lot more modern and I was used to it.  This version looks like something from the 90s, have to constantly adjust size of Mozilla when browsing as it is huge.  I have my own version of Windows 7 on another disc but the hard drive will not let it load either........considering waiting for Windows 10 but again unsure if this new hard drive will even let that update Thanks

  • Recovery disc does not work for Satellite A100-197

I am working on a A100-197 that would not boot into ordinary Windows but was able to boot into Safe mode.
I used MSConfig to turn off everything at startup and all non-MS services. No good.
I used system restore. No good.
I scanned for viruses, rootkits etc. None found. No good.
I copied data to another hard drive using safe mode with networking and inserted the recovery DVD.
Went through unpacking and got message telling me to remove DVD - did this and system appeared to freeze.
Hit the exit button and it rebooted but Windows froze (the moving blobs stopped moving). Tried safe mode
but got a message saying that the system installation did not finish.
Tried the recovery again but this time I left the unpacking screen at 100% overnight to see if
it did anything. It didn't. Clicked exit and got the same as above.
Formatted HDD in partition magic and tried again. No good.
Created 5GB FAT32 partition and copied DVD files to FAT32 partition. Tried to run the unpacking program
from DOS. It refused to run in DOS mode.
I'm thinking of linking the hdd to another machine and running RecoUnpack.exe from a working PC to
unpack the image files onto the laptop HDD, but this is crazy - the recovery disc is supposed to recover the
system. What else can I try?

Thanks Dennis. I was starting to think similar things myself.
There was a program installed called Daemon Tools which uses
SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD) layer. My analysis suggested this was the rogue
program but I followed all the uninstall procedures and couldn't seem to solve the problem.
I don't suppose (and I've never had anything like this before) that it could have fouled up
something in the hardware layer? I tried resetting the BIOS to default settings. Maybe I should
flash the BIOS? Could it have altered any other ROM on the laptop? Is there other ROM on
    the laptop?
I hate software that ruins computers! Why can't people just use their b***** machines for sensible
    things?

  • Satellite C870-121 recovery discs is not working?

    Hi...
I have a weird problem, I bought the computer 6 months ago and have been happy with it, but I got somekind of virus and all the OS was ****ed up big time, so yesterday I would da a factory install with the recovery discs I created when I purchased the computer.
I have the Toshiba System Disc and 4 recovery dvds, I insert the sytem disc and all looks like it should, it loads and then it ask for Disc One of the recovery discs, I insert Disc 1 and after 10 sec. it ejects it again and ask for Disc One again.
I have verified the 5 discs on my other computer and there is data on them and they look okay, I have tried inserting all of the discs to see if I switched them when I printed on them, nothing is working, it will simply not reconize disc one and I am stuck? Any help from anyone?
I am pretty sure its not the hardware that are bad, because I had an old XP windows disc, and after I tried all, I tried to install this on the computer and everything was fine, but I would like to have windows 7 as the computer came with....
    Regards Allan Thomsen

Hi all :) Thanks for the answer, but I figured it out after spending 2 hours reading on forums and boards...
I found other people with the same problem, and some clever people had found that if the HD is in different partitions than they were on purchase they could not use the recovery discs (not only Toshiba issue, but many different brands)...
*I thought I would give this a try and deleted all partitions on the HD, so it became completly empty, then I inserted the Repair disc again and then Disc One when it asked for it, and ALL went fine, I have my Windows 7 back now* :)
Anyways I am not a wizard and have zero knowledge about Windows 7 and recovery discs, but this method worked for me 100 procent, so would share this with you all, in case someone else have the same problem...

  • Re: Windows Recovery Partition is not working

    Hi All!
My brother's Toshiba A500 laptop with Windows 7 32bit got antimalware doctor and after deleting it fully, got problems with the OS (such as programs slowing considerably after randomly minimising during operation) and so we backed up everything important in safe mode, and tried to use the rocovery partition by pressing 0 repetitively on startup. We got to the utility, but it's saying it can't find the recovery device and that we need the recovery disc, does anyone know where i can get a Toshiba A500 Windows 7 32 bit recovery disc?
    Sincerely
    Ark

No no. if you are from Australia then you must order recovery DVD in your country. Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and they will help you.
As far as I know Toshiba doesnt send European recovery DVDs worldwide.

  • Recovery discs: says not the right model when trying to install

Hi I have a real problem.I have a 1330n Media center desktop. I never had to use the system recovery discs before. I bought this PC new from Circuit City when they were in business.      A little info.
A few years ago HP sent me the full set of recovery discs after the courts made them supply owners with a physical set of discs and not the hard drive partition like they supplied. I never used these. I do have my system backed up with Retrospect and if I ever had an issue I always relied on that.
I just got a trojan that hit everything even the recovery partition. I needed to format and go from scratch. I knew I had these recovery discs so I was not afraid to try different methods of recovery. I was told by the anti virus people AVG to install from a Win XP disc and format the hd and start there. The discs I have from HP do not work as AVG said so I went to my Retrospect back up restore cd. It brings up my restore shell but fails to show the external drive where my back up resides. I now have only one choice my HP recovery discs. I tried to use them and they say not the right model.
What do I do now? I need to get this up so I can restore my retrospect backup.
    Any suggestions?

Read the section "Error: These PC recovery discs do NOT support this PC model" in the troubleshooting recovery in Windows XP web page. Try these steps and/or verify everything is correct.

  • Synaptics touchpad on HP Mini 110 Windows 7 32 Bit - not working for one user - working for another

    Hi,
I recently have an issue with Synaptics touchpad on HP Mini 110 Windows 7 32 Bit - NOT working for one user - working for another.
Windows 7 updates recently installed ???
By checking the device properties on the user that works - "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad 13/10/2011 Version 15.3.29.0"
When the other user logs on, the touchpad works for a few seconds, then a displays a black square with a red diagonal line through it, then the touchpad won't respond. Trying to use the keypad to navigate to system diagnosics or anything to find further info is useless....

    Hey eagle_no11,
Thank you for joining the HP Support Community!
I will do my best in assisting to hopefully get the TouchPad to work on the second user profile.
What I would like to start off with, is to restore the original Synaptics drivers onto the profile that is not working correctly. I have included the document Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7).
Once you have installed the original drivers, you will need to complete all updates from both HP, as well as Windows. For these updates, if you open the HP Support Assistant, and select Maintain, you should see an option for updating.
Please let me know how these steps do work out for you.
    Have a great day!

Please excuse my novice actions in the subject description as I put my problem and request there. Basically: My XP software Disc will not work on my Windows 8.1 computer for my HP PSC 2355v All In One Printer.  Needless to say I can print with a downloaded driver but can not use the Managerial software on the XP disc.   When I try to work from the printer it does not recognize the computer, so  is there HP software out there that can be downloaded simply to my computer? If  so, Where and How can I get it. Thanks again.

    Hi,
Unfortunately no more support after Vista but you can use basic function of the printer using the following instructions:

  • Recovery discs don't work, Toshiba wants $25? - Qosmio G35-AV660

I have a Qosmio G35-AV660. Basically, my recovery discs don't work. The first one does, but when it asks for the second one, I put it in, and it just spins and spins, and then pops out and it asks for the second disc again. I called Toshiba about this, and they went through the spiel about how it costs $25 and how it's not their fault, and that's the price for them to get it from this other company. I told them that I was willing to send my discs in, to verify that they aren't working right, and that I'm not trying to cheat them out of a free set of discs, but they wouldn't hear of it.
I just want to be able to get QosmioPlayer working again, and the only way I can do that is with the recovery discs, and there's no way I'm paying $25 for something I already have, that should work, but doesn't, for no reason whatsoever.
If anybody can help me out, either with a disc image (I only need the second disc), or a spare second disc, I'd be incredibly grateful.

Also, I can prove that I own both discs, either with pictures, or MD5 keys, or whatever.

Nonsense, and very misleading advice.  I've updated iPhone 3G, 3Gs,and 4  through itunes many times, never had a problem once, not with one single update in nearly 5 years of iPhones.  Of course, I've never jailbroken my phones either.  Hack your phone and have update problems?  I've got news for you, the problems are not a result of iTunes or Apple's updates.
