Windows 8 Recovery

Hi, I`m using HP Envy 15 J-126tx which came with windows 8. While using Win8, I noticed some problems, like I my graphics were not as good as they should have been, some programs were totally blurred like utorrent, chrome etc. I thought it was drivers problem, but then searching on internet, I found that people who had Windows 8 and dedicated graphics memory were suffering this problem, and personally I thought windows 7 was more stable and a perfect window for any kind of user, so I tried to install windows 7, and in doing so, I got my hard disk cleaned, as I had to convert my hard disk from GPT to MBR in order to install win7. Now I`m using windows 7 with SP1 64-bit, but still after installing all latest available drivers, I haven`t got what I was expecting, e.g.
1) Graphics problem is still there, blurred and fuzzy text on some apps like chrome, utorrent, and any installer window etc
2) Wifi mac address can`t be changes using options (Locally Administered MAC Address)
3) Bluetooth driver does not install, I tried several drivers, and there are no official drivers for Bluetooth on HP Support (if there are any, kindly share the link with me)
4) FingerPrint reader does not work. (I`ve installed drivers, but HP SimpePass does not function)
Now after having so many problems still there, I want to get my windows 8 back, as I can`t claim any warranty using Windows 7. Then I would go to the retailer and ask him to solve the graphics problem.
The problem is, in converting from GPT to MBR, I got my hard drive cleaned, so I can`t use recovery that came along with my PC.
Is there anyway I can get some recovery disk? or Recovery ISO image?
or my friend has also same laptop and he hasn`t removed his recovery drive, and he is using Windows 8, can I use his recovery? How?
I cant see his recovery drive in My Computer, I can see recovery disk only in Disk Manager which doesn`t have any drive letter associated with it. Can I use this recovery drive? How can I make an ISO image of that drive?
I can buy a new windows 8.1 key from Microsoft if I need, all I want is already installed drivers and softwares that first came with my laptop.
I hope HP does not disappoint me this time, as I`m already not satisfied with the product graphics and drivers support by HP.

  • Firefox 4 crashes after windows recovery virus /malware infection

Hello My computer was infected by the "windows recovery " virus/malware when running Firefox 4 with administrator right user . I could get rid of the virus/malware using antivirus and antimalware sw ( superantispyware, antimalwarebytes, spybot and avast ) . Currently , no viruses or malwares are reporetd on my system . Still, when starting firefox.exe , the error message " firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close " is triggered and , although firefox starts and runs OK; it will close whenever a send/don't send option is taken on the error message . If I rename the Firefox.ex exe program into another name, Firefox runs OK and the error message is not triggered .
I have had superantispyware support run an analysis tool on my system and their feedback was that the infection, if any, can only be viral . I had AVAST run in F8 safe mode and no viruses are reported any longer after desinfection of the system where a couple of exes created by the malware were found/deleted . I tried uninstall/reinstall Firefox 4 and 3, but the problem remains . Also, I have looked for a crash report in the documents and settings folder but finds none . Last, I also tried to start firefox.exe in safe mode but it will not start ( it will well start if I rename firefox.exe into another name )
Thanks beforehand if you can suggest something to solve this .
    Best regards Pierre W

Does it help if you create a new profile or uninstall and reinstall Firefox?
If you reinstall Firefox then be sure to remove the Firefox program folder to remove possibly left over files in it.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-1285dx - No F11, Won't Boot Windows -- Recovery Manager PATH?

I am repairing an HP Pavilion dv7-1285dx for a friend. I have restored countless other computers but this one has driven me up the wall after 7 hours of trial and error and web searches.
    Here's the deal:
--The computer came with Windows Vista
--The owner upgraded it to Windows 7 this past fall
--The comptuer came in contact with malware and will not boot
--When booting, the computer will slowly attempt to load Windows, will make it to the "welcome" screen, then restart itself, creating an infinite loop
--I do have a recovery DVD for the computer; the owner burned it apparently in late 2010
--I am proficient in MS-DOS and am comfortable using the command prompt
--The command prompt is the only way I can operate this computer at the moment. I do not have access to Windows of any sort, let alone the web
--I do have two other computers here that are mine, both are Macs and one dual-boots into Windows; I do have a few flash drives and can burn optical media if necessary
The F11 key does not work on this computer to bring up the recovery manager. I know why, too--the machine was upgraded to Windows 7, which wiped out the connection between the key and the program.
My hope is that I can find the path of the recovery manager somewhere. There was a windows.old directory on the drive; I was able to change it to Windows (the existing Windows was renamed windows.scrap).
This enabled me to at least get to an OS selection screen. There were three options: 7, 7 (recovery), and Vista (recovery). None of them are able to get me into Windows. The Vista option states it is corrupt while both 7s will try to unsuccessfully repair themselves.
I can, however, access the command prompt through the Windows recovery program (NOT the HP recovery program, which I need to restore anything from either the partition on the D: drive or the DVD).
I did notice all of the files on the DVD were in .zip format once I got deep enough in a directory. I'm debating about extracting them on one of my other comptuers to see if I can just get them over on another device, but my only external hard drive is Mac formatted so I'll have to use a USB stick.
There have been queries about this out there referring to making the D: partition active. However, all of these solutions require Windows, which I cannot use. The same is true of downloads.
My biggest question--where could the recovery program be buried? I would be willing to bring files over on another device IF AND ONLY IF THEY DO NOT REQUIRE WINDOWS.
The SMINST directory within Program Files (x86) is not present.
Basically, I need a DOS-compatible, non-Windows, way to restore this computer.
I have no other Windows installation discs for the machine currently with me. Also, the COA sticker on the bottom of the computer is extremely worn and I can only read a few digits of it, so I can't use that for a restore I guess.
On a final note--the fan in this comptuer is extremely annoying; any way to turn it off besides just the switch in the BIOS that toggles whether it runs all the time?

You don't need to be in Windows to mark the D:\Recovery partition Active. Just boot with a utility cd with the disk management capability. If you don't have one_Scroll down on the page and get>> Bootable CD  If you don't have a burning app that can burn an ISO to cd get>> ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd-a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is> Here. Once created, boot from it.
Btw-have you tried booting from his Vista Recovery DVD? With the first disc in the CD/DVD drive power on the laptop and immediately tap Esc to bring up the menu. Then tap F9 Boot options. Use the arrow key to move down & highlight the Optical drive then tap Enter key. (No key is needed with Recovery DVDs)

  • Windows Recovery Failed - Stuck on startup

I recently tried using hp's windows recovery program to wipe my harddrive and reinstall windows. I am now stuck at start up and am getting an error message that consists of "HP Notebook" as the title, it displays the time and date and "please wait". There is a cancel button that is not selectable. This box appears for approx. 5 seconds and disappears. It then cycles back to the HP startup logo with the circular dots representing that it is working. This cycle is continuous and just keeps on repeating. Booting into bios doesn't even work at this point. Anyone with experience with the issue, advice would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise HP will be getting this laptop sent in for repairs for a THIRD time. (First two were defective hardware issues) This is getting very time consuming and frustrating. Thanks for the help!

    Hi Borck91,
I saw your post regarding the loop that you are currently stuck in. I know that this can be frustrating but let's see if you can boot into Safe Mode.  If you can boot into Safe Mode, please let me know your operating system and product number.
If you can't get into Safe Mode then suggest that you contact HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or visit this link if you are outside North America.

  • My HP Pavilion 775C with Windows XP 32 bit SP3 has begun to startup in Windows Recovery Mode.

I have had many problems with my Pavilion a775c desktop, running XP 32 Bit with SP3 and 2.5 G Ram.  I was receiving a Fatal Error message 1327 that Drive M did not exist.  I did a selective startup eliminating the programs I thought were causing this but that did not help.  Then I cleaned away all the files for any HP printer, and for my current printer, an  Officejet j3680 All-in-One, and then reinstalled it.  That took care of the fatal error message but I began to get a message that my DRive D was out of memory.  I deleted some regular files that were previously stored on that drive before I increased the memory on my Drive C but I continued to receive that message.  I cleaned the registry with Registry Mechanic and then deleted files I though would not harm the computer and I no longer get the Drive D low on memory message but now the computer starts up each time in recovery mode and If I'm not there to select the Windows XP option it goes to a dos screen but nothing ever happens from there.   I'm not that familiar with DOS and don't know anything except to type EXIT which I did and the computer would reboot giving my an opportunity to select Windows XP.  Now, however, it won't allow me to type EXIT.  I must instead hit enter and then it goes to the screen that allows me to select the Windows environment.  I really don't want to have to do this each time I start up.  Can anyone help?

I am not that familiar anymore with troubleshooting Windows XP, but way back in the day I seem to recall that the Windows recovery console would be used to fix issues like the one you're describing. It sounds like you may have a corrupted boot sector if it keeps going into the windows recovery mode.  The solution could be as simple as using the last known good configuration or possibly doing a system restore.  You may want to try this link on Technet that explains the recovery console and the tools available in it like fixmbr..

  • In windows recovery console need id of apple cd

I have a problem with windows xp that requires that I make a command in the Windows Recovery Console in
the form of "expand d:\..." ,for example, where "d" would represent the cd drive.  However  my Mac mini, has
apparently assigned a different letter for its cd.  I looked under My Computer under Mac OS and couldn't really
figure out what letter identifed the cd, but it looked like it could be a "1".  But that doesn't work in Windows either.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks, Ron

    Hi fizz,
It may be just doing what it says, examing the disk, if there are problems it may take a while to come up with the recovery console, but is that what you want?. It is not the repair XP option, which is slightly further on, on the ' do you want to install to X disk, Repair, or quit screen, where R will run the XP CD and repair an installed OS. The recovery console is a DOS command prompt screnn, so you need to know what you want to do, for eg: repair the MBR, by tying at the C:> FIXMBR will build a new MBR on the C: drive.

  • Re: Windows recovery icon disappeared

    Dear All,
My pc (satellite A100) has been giving me problems after a virus infection. I decided to reinstall the OS but the recovery DVD 1 is damaged. I tried to create new discs but the icon for Windows recovery DVD has disappeared.
Could anyone give me the route and name of the exe file so I can try to execute it manually?
Thank you in advance for your help.

    > I need the name of the exe file (ie. "xyz.exe") and if possible I would like to know the folder where it is located
It's not available on my lap anymore that's why i don't remember the exact name. But is sounds like *Trslauncher* and should be located in program files in Toshiba utilities folder. try this one:

To be honest, i don't know if it will work.........

  • AHH Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery won't let me get into Windows RecoverY!

So I'm having the error Windows failed to start; NLS data is missing or corrupt. What I've read on the internet told me said that I should enter the Windows Repair disk and proceed. I don't have an optic drive, nor was my tablet (X61T) shipped with discs. I've created a bootable image of the windows recovery disk on a USB, but when I enter it the only option is to go into thinkpad rescue and recovery. There's no way around this as far as I can see. Also, windows doesn't start at all, no safe mode, no last working configuration, none of those.
Thinkvantage R&R doesn't let me do the same repair function as Vista, nor can it restore from vista's backups as far as Ican see. The only option is Full restore, as quick restore is not pressable.
HELP! I don't even want this stupid program anymore, is there any way to uninstall it?
And I was going to just make a copy of the HD and factory reset it, but when I recovered all the files and was double checking, some of the files which I have hidden were missing, so I can't go about wiping it anymore. Please help!

  • [SOLVED] How Do I Prepare Windows Recovery Environment on Windows 10. Taking Backup Measures on Your Windows Using ReagentC Tool and PowerShell

    Howdy,
I'm trying to enable my system with WinRE but all to no avail. What could be wrong?
The partition layout is as follows:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-Partition -DiskNumber 4
    DiskId: \\?\scsi#disk&ven_msft&prod_virtual_disk#2&2e87576f&0&000002#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}
    PartitionNumber DriveLetter Offset Size Type
    1 1048576 500 MB Recovery
    2 525336576 100 MB System
    3 630194176 128 MB Reserved
    4 E 764411904 95 GB Basic
    5 102769885184 4.29 GB Recovery
I formatted this 1st recovery partition into FAT32 and mounted the volume as R:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-Partition -DiskNumber 4 -PartitionNumber 1 | Format-Volume -FileSystem FAT32 -NewFileSystemL
    abel RECOVERY -Force -Confirm:$false
Then I created the storage folder for the Recovery Environment on this R: volume:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> mkdir "R:\Recovery\WindowsRE"
    Directory: R:\Recovery
    Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
    d----- 13.01.2015 20:15 WindowsRE
And copied the WinRE.wim file from the storage folder on the Windows partition:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> xcopy /H E:\Windows\System32\Recovery\Winre.wim R:\Recovery\WindowsRE\
    E:\Windows\System32\Recovery\winRE.wim
    1 File(s) copied
Finally, I attempted to enable the copied WinRE and registed it in Windows like that:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> ReAgentc.exe /setreimage /path R:\Recovery\WindowsRE\ /target E:\Windows
    Directory set to: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk4\partition1\Recovery\WindowsRE
    REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.
However, checking the status with Reagent returns that WinRE is DISABLED:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> ReAgentc.exe /info /target E:\Windows
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration
    Information:
    Windows RE status: Disabled
    Windows RE location:
Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
    Recovery image location:
    Recovery image index: 0
    Custom image location:
    Custom image index: 0
    REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.
    And also:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> .\ReAgentc.exe /info
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration
    Information:
    Windows RE status: Disabled
    Windows RE location:
Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 6a7e9cfb-700d-11e4-95e0-00155d095900
    Recovery image location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk3\partition4\RecoveryImage
    Recovery image index: 4
    Custom image location:
    Custom image index: 0
    REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.
Why is that? What am I doing wrong here?
How do I properly prepare OS for recovery?
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

The target drive with location of WinRE.wim file MUST be NTFS formatted.
Here's what you need to do to enable WinRE.wim that is located on another partition (Partition 1 in my case):
    1. Disable the current setup:
    C:\Windows\system32>reagentc /disable
    REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.
    2. Check the status:
    C:\Windows\system32>reagentc /info
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration
    Information:
    Windows RE status: Disabled
    Windows RE location:
Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
    Recovery image location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk4\partition5\Recovery
    Recovery image index: 1
    Custom image location:
    Custom image index: 0
    REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.
    3. Make sure that C:\Windows\System32\Recovery\ReAgent.xml contains zeroes in location elements.
    This is a proper config:
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8' standalone='yes'?>

  • Howto start Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)?

    Hi
I have Satellite Pro U200 PLUA1E-02802QS with Vista Business 32-bit and the WinRE partition.
Howto start Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)?
I mean which keyboard key should I press during the startup process to get WinRE menu?

In my Satellite Pro A300 the F8 key during start-up will run the HDD Recovery partition.
Hope it is the same on your.
Or do you possibly mean the Vista Business Recovery environment. Accessed by control panel, system recovery from image?

  • DM1 Netbook - BootMGR then OS Missing - Windows Recovery Corrupted?

    Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion dm1-4010us Entertainment PC.
Last week after my wife turned it on she said that it went automatically into the windows recovery menu. The computer had some kind of error I suppose (sorry I dont have any more specifics) and so it went through some process.
When it finished the computer restarted and went to the log in screen. It was extremely slow in letting me type my password but when it did finally login it only showed a dark blue screen (not the blue screen of death) and "This copy of Windows is not genuine" in the bottom right had corner.
After I restarted several times and only got the same result I decided to try to restore the computer to factory settings. After this process the computer restarted and showed a black screen with "Boot MGR is missing Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart". I restarted a few times and got the same thing so I did another reset to factory settings and now it shows a black screen with "Operating System is missing"
I tried to call HP support yesterday but apparently I'm 2 days past the end of my warranty and they can't do anything (Really!? Come on, cut me a break). Should I be looking for recovery discs (I guess I'd have to load it through a flash drive since I have no disc drive) or a new hard drive? The guy at tech support said I couldn't download this particular version of windows and that I would have to buy a new harddrive from HP with it already loaded but is this really my only option? I should have called a few days earlier it seems.
Sorry for the long message, I'm hoping one of these details may help.
    Product No. - QD992UA#ABA
    Model No.     - dm1-4010us
OS                  - Windows 7 Home Premium OA
P.S. I'm trying the system diagnostics now but after an hour and a half its still on the white screen showing "Initializing System Diagnostics"

    @Mikeman03,
That states the hard drive is possibly dying.  I would try these last 3 steps and if it still fails replace the drive.
Reseat the hard drive, which really means just removing and it and putting back in place to confirm a good connection. Here is the service manual that will show you how to access the hard drive, the steps are on page 55.
After that access the BIOS again, once there press F5 to load the default settings, and then press F10 to save and exit to attempt to boot. If the computer does not boot shut the computer down and load back into the BIOS menu, and run the test again and if it fails the drive needs to be replaced.
Let me know how that goes.

  • Re: How to access the Windows Recovery Console?

How can I access the Windows Recovery Console. The Microsoft KBs state that it can be accessessed from booting with the OS DVD. However you don't supply OS DVD only the Toshiba Recovery Disks. When I boot these it only gives the option to erase all data and restore to original state.
    I have a Toshiba Qosmio F10 running Windows 7 32bit.
The reason I need the recovery console is due to a chkdsk failure that has now lead to it running everytime I boot and hanging each time. Other MS Articals say I can get out of this endless loop by using the Windows Recovery Console.

Windows 7 was preinstalled soemwhere on HDD when I purchased it new in June 2010. All I had to do was selcet 32bit or 64bit the first time it ran. I then took the option to create recovery media (which burned 4 dVDs). However the only option using these dvds is to run install which the screen states will erase all data and reinstall as supplied from the factory.
I need to get to some form of access the the HDD which means I need to stop chkdsk running at startup everytime it boots and then hanging every time. I can't access sfae mode either. I need to abort chkdsk get into either a command prompt or windows so I can run other utitlies to check the HDD.

  • I cannot acces the Windows Recovery Environment

    Dear HP experts,
I bougt an HP Pavilion notebook earlier this year with Windows 8. I must have some malware on it cause it recently started openig random pages in Chrome and other annoying advert stuff.
Therefore I would like to do a full reset to factory settings through the HP recovery manager.
When I try accessing it though the function "Windows Recovery Environment" seems to be disabled.
Also when rebooting the notebook and pressing "escape" it gives the option to excess the recovery environment by pressing F11. However when doing so nothing happens and the notebook just starts normally.
Can anyone help me to excess the recovery manager environment?
I would really appreciate any help, thanks.
    Sanne

    Hi @SannedeGoede,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would be happy to help you, but it would be best to get some product specific information, the full product/model number and OS version. Please read the following documents if you need help in finding those.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Have you tried to check your computer for malware/spyware/viruses and such first? Depending on what is found it could be something you can fix before doing anything like a system recovery.
I personally would start with that, and you want to be sure you setup a good program to protect you from this sort of thing in future, or at least make it less likely.
About Spyware, Adware, and Browser Hijacking Software
Using Windows 8 Defender to Prevent Virus and Spyware Problems
After checking for all the "lovely" possible software infections and removing them if possible, then if you are still having trouble I would then look at a system restore, and select a point from before when the problem first appeared. Hopefully you have one available. Often that will fix things, but it is important to screen your computer for those "infections" first, otherwise you will just end up having the same problem
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
If after trying all of those, then I would look at system recovery. Hopefully you will have resolved it before reaching this.
