Windows 8 Rollback issue or Security issue

I think I may have made a mistake in trying to reset my computer. I had some viral activity that had taken over my Norton security and was messing with my computer. I tried to fix it but Norton became too corrupted and could not recognize any virus. I
have an HP Envy that is about a year old and I had updated it to Windows 8.1 when I had internet. My wife had her computer crash on her several months back and to save her data I just copied her entire hardrive onto the extra hard drive that I had installed.
I did not think to much of it but when I had some issues with my computer and did a system refresh on my computer I think it found the files and is getting the 2 system files confused. I also purchased a copy of office 2010 from a source on the internet that
said I had to uninstall all other versions because the key they had would not work with trial versions. Little afraid that it is bootlegged. now my computer is acting funny. I do not have access to all files on it and I have programs that are running and migrating
so not sure what to do. Any advice?????

Hello,
Sorry for the trouble. I am Vineeth and I am from the Norton Support team.
Did you try reinstalling the Norton product? Can you run a scan with the free Norton Power Eraser tool and see if it detects any problems: http://www.Norton.com/npe?
Thanks!

  • Windows & File System Repository - security issues

    Hello,
I got a strange behavior in EP 6 SP 2 using KM and Windows file systems. Here is the scenario:
    - I created a Network Path and a File System Repository pointing to a Windows 2003 File System, following the portal help instructions. Both EP6 server and Windows 2003 server are in the same domain.
    - according the KM Monitor, the repository is up and running
    - the portal users can access their respectives folders in the file system after having their uids / passwords mapped in the user mapping option
    - the portal is assuming the permissions (read & write & list folder & etc) from windows
So far it seemed to be everything ok - but after some tests we got the problem:
    - user "A" has his uid/pwd mapped in portal, and read & write access to the file system "dept_folder". He can access the folder through a KM iview, with r/w privileges.
    - user "B" has his uid/pwd mapped in portal, and ONLY read access to the file system "dept_folder". He can access the folder through an KM iview, with read privileges.
    - and here comes the problem: if user "A" is logged, and user "B" replaces his uid by user "A" uid in the user mapping (only the uid, the password doesn't matter) he can access the file system "dept_folder" with the same privileges than user "A".
I looked in SDN, SAP Notes and SAP Portal Help trying to find an article related to this, no success so far. We have CM Patches 2 & 3 applied, and Patch 4 doesn't have any comment about this specific security problem.
Has someone already face this problem ? Or could be something wrong in my configuration ?
    Rgds, and tks in advance
    Fernando Cervantes

    Hi David
The same occurred here, I think I know the reason. Let me just give you an overview of my configuration:
    Network Path id          ccc-ccc1fs-drive_i
    Description *            DRIVE I - CCC1FS Server
    Network Path *
    ccc1fs\Drive_I
    Password           *********
    Re-Enter Password      *********
    User *            ccc\service
The user was provided by the Windows administrator and has full control for this folder.
    File System Repository
Description                  File System drive_i CCC1FS Server
    Prefix *                 /ccc-ccc1fs-drive_i
    Root Directory *            //ccc1fs/drive_i
    Windows Landscape System       Windows
    ACL Manager                Not set
    Security Manager          W2KSecurityManager
The important here is the Security Manager configuration - it must be W2KSecurityManager, otherwise you will have the user permissions overrided by admin user permission. And you will need to configure a Windows system landscape too.
I hope this can help you...concerning the bosses, I got the same situation, I said the whole stuff would work fine

  • VPS windows server 2008r2 RDP security issue, need help!

system: VPS windows server 2008r2 at a remote location, directly exposed to internet
Administration is possible only via Remote
    Desktop.
I cannot disable&replace the default administrator account with a different username...which means I get a lot of brute force attacks.
I created rules in the firewall to limit the scope of the remote IP addresses, even limited the scope of the RDP rules down to my client IP address only.I tested the rules by trying to
access the vps server from a wifi hotspot (starbucks was useful for once) and indeed I was not to rdp into myserver.
Yet I still find Nigerian , chinese taiwanese iranian and so on based IP addresses in the event log under audit failures.
I didn't want to limit the ip scope, because if my ISP changed my IP address ,I'd lose access to my VPS server... then again, why are the Nigerians still getting in?
    Anyway,
is there a way to replace the username and password login with a public/private key method like it is under Linux? Or perhaps is there a better solution?
    Hope someone can help.
    Thank you in advance!
    Paolo

So, your suggestion gave me an idea.
First I discovered why the Nigerians could keep getting in....a rule for utorrent opened everything...! That rule is gone now.
The idea is as following: lock the RDP to the one ip address I use but install a SSH server open to any IP address that mandates key pair based logon only, using a public/private key pair that I only obviously have.
Brute force will never work on a key pair only login shell. Let them
try it if they want. (Assuming nobody manages to crack my home network and steal my files :-)
If my ISP changes my ipaddress, I can login via SSH and modify the firewall rule (which I tested already).
Of course this works for people like me who just have a VPS server for personal use with a very clear knowledge from which ipaddress they access their server.
Anyway..hahahah take this Nigerians & Co hackers!
Ok thanks for your inspiring suggestion!

  • Severe Security Issue with Sharing Permissions and Windows

I recently discovered a severe Security issue with the windows sharing an permission settings:
I have two users, an admin user and a parental controlled user. On my mac mini, i have a external harddrive connected. On the harddrive, i have three folders, Itunes, Iphoto (Package) and a Temp Folder. I want to share the Harddrive RW for the admin, but only R for the parental user. But the Temp folder should be accessible for RW for the parental as well.
    1. I set the Drive checkbox "ignore ownership" off.
    2. I set the permissions of the drive to admin RW, parental R and Everyone to "no access"
    3. I apply to enclosed Items
    4. I set the permission of the Temp folder to admin RW, parental RW and Everyone to "no access"
    5. I apply to enclosed Items
    6. I go to "File Sharing" in the Preferences and activate SMB sharing for both users
    7. I delete all previous shares
    8. I add the Disk and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental R, Everyone "no access"
    9. I add the Temp folder and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental RW, Everyone "no access" - Funny, there is a new Group called "Temp" created which has custom access on both sharepoints
    10. I connect to the mac over a Windows machine (NTLM auth set appropriatly). Now I try to create a folder on the root of the Disk share, I get a denied message.
BUT WHEN I GO INTO A SUBFOLDER (eg. ITUNES or IPHOTO), WHICH HAS ALSO JUST "R" PERMISSION FOR THE PARENTAL USER, I AM ABLE TO RW, DELETE AND DO EVERYTHING!!!
TO RECAPITULATE: THE SHARING PERMISSIONS ARE "R", AND THE FILE PERMISSIONS IN THE RESPECTIVE FOLDERS FOR THE RESPECTIVE USER ARE ALSO JUST "R". BUT THE USER CAN DO EVERYTHING IN THE SUBFOLDERS!!!

  • RDP to Windows 8 or 8.1 issues - admin or console connection not working

    Hi,
I have a number of issues when connecting to my Win8 Pro (and now Win8.1 Pro) machine via RDP. First off, I know that most of the issues I am about to list below should technically be resolved if I connect to the console or admin session of my machine, however
    they don't.
The issues I am having are:
    1. If the user is already logged in, when I connect I get a black screen for a few minutes before I can actually see the desktop, etc
    2. If there is no user logged in already, then when I connect I get a black screen and then never actually see the desktop, therefore I have to reboot the machine, physically log into the machine and then I am able to RDP successfully.
Note: I have done some research on issues # 1 & 2 and I think this is because of my Nvidia drivers - as I have a Nvidia GTX660 Ti installed.
Although issues #1 and #2 are annoying, they are nothing like the issue I am experiencing below:
    3. Once I am logged in and can access and use the machine, no matter if I am connected to the console session of the machine or not, I can't run most applications. For example if I start Command Prompt, or try and access any Control Panel item, or System
Properties, etc I get the following error:
"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."
    4. In addition, I can't do any kind of administrative function on the machine I am RDP'ing. I can't install software, I can't access any form of system setting, I can't power on VMs in VMware Workstation, etc.
The user I am logging in as is a local administrator and I am connecting to (or at least I am trying to) connect to the console session of the machine. I have tried this from the following different setups:
    1. Another Windows 8.1 Pro running mstsc /admin and just normal mstsc
    2. From my Mac using Microsoft Remote Desktop app and ensuring I select the "Connect to Console session" option
    TROUBLESHOOTING:
    ================
In order to attempt to resolve this problem, I have done the following troubleshooting:
    1. From the problematic Win8.1 Pro machine, I have RDP'd (via mstsc /admin) to my other Win 8.1 Pro machine. I have tested running cmd, installing apps, etc, etc and I have been able to do everything just as I should. To me this means that there is some
sort of configuration issue between the two machines.
    2. Based on the information from #1 above, I have compared the following settings between the two machines and have set them to be exactly the same:
    - User Accounts - same settings (local admin, etc) + UAC disabled
    - Windows Firewall - both on and set to default settings
    - Local Groups have the same members - Local Administrators, Remote Desktop Users, etc
    - Remote Desktop enabled and set to least restrictive option (less secure option)
    - Local Security Policy - Checked Local Security Settings to ensure all settings are exactly the same
    - Local Group Policy - in particular for Remote Desktop settings - both exactly the same configuration
    - No additional 3rd party apps are installed on either machine which I think could cause these issues (other than Nvidia Graphics Card drivers on my problematic machine)
    3. Done extensive internet research and can't seem to find any information or people having the same issue as myself
    4. Clean install of Windows 8 Pro and tested - same issue. Installed all latest drivers, Windows Updates, etc c- same issue. Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro - same issue.
    5. Created a new local administrator user and tested - same issue
    6. Checked event viewer and can't seem to find any specific error that would give insight into what is causing this issue
At this point, I have come to a dead-end as I am not sure what else I can try to resolve this issue. If issues #1 and #2 can't be resolved, then I am happy to "live" with them, however the rest of the issues are really frustrating as they are preventing
me from easily achieving what I need to.
If anyone can point me in the right direction or has some insight into these issues, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks very much
    Regards,
    Luca

    Hi Roger,
Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that test result before, sorry I forgot. If I log into the problem machine locally with the same user I am logging into when logging in via RDP, I can run cmd, I can install apps, I can do everything as I should
be able to as I am a local admin and have disabled UAC.
If however I log in with the same user via RDP (whether or not I have already logged into that machine locally with the user or not), I have the problem of no admin access. This is why I think it is a problem accessing the console or admin session of the
    machine.
Sorry, but I am not sure by what you mean by this question "If so, how about change other computer to
remote to this problematic Win8.1 Pro machine?"
    Thanks for your help

    Luca

  • Spoof dialog Boxes security issue

    Hi all
Any one out there aware of this security issue with Safari
"Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in various browser's, which can be exploited by malicious web sites to spoof dialog boxes.
The problem is that JavaScript dialog boxes do not display or include their origin, which allows a new window to open e.g. a prompt dialog box, which appears to be from a trusted site."
I found the above by accident as i was looking up something else.
If you go to Secunia site and try the test you may find that you are also vulnerable.
    http://secunia.com/multiple_browser'sdialog_origin_vulnerabilitytest/
The only way i found to stop the spoof dialog box was to turn off enable plug-ins in preferences. However i don't have any plug-ins in my Safari plug-in folder.
I'am running safari 1.3(v312) however it would appear that it also effects version 2.2 of Safari too. Also i have installed the latest update but to no effect. Other browser effect are:-
    _ Internet Explorer for Mac
    - Internet Explorer
    - Opera
    - iCab
    - Mozilla / FireFox / Camino
My question is, is this vulnerability true, or just a setup
    Any comments welcome.
    ~Tim

    Hi,
The issue is resolved, but I don't know what caused this error.
I uninstalled the java components and BO then I deleted the BO folder under program files, then I deleted all BO entries in the registry.
Finally I reinstalled everything except the service pack and that finally worked. I don't know the cause of this error.

  • Security issue in DNS ! Update bind.

Apparently there is a massive security issue in DNS protocol : http://securosis.com/2008/07/08/dan-kam … -released/
    or http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/800113
I am surprised I haven't seen any post on the forum about it. For now a solution could be to update bind to 9.5.0-P1 (I don't know if the one in testing is this particular one, there is no "P1").
Every DNS server has to be upgraded since the issue is in the protocol, not in the code !

A lot of systems got updated yesterday/today. I just checked a Windows Server 2003 x64 RC2 at work; yesterday it was vulnerable, but today it's reported safe after the recent security updates (this site offers some kind of check: http://www.doxpara.com/)
I believe all the "big" ones in Linux did release an update yesterday, so there's probably plentiful of patches around... which is beyond the limits of my brain cells at the moment.

  • Security issue with connecting to Microsoft Live

I currently use StudioCloud for my studio management software. However, I'm unable to use the email features of the software as they state "**Adobe Air has a security issue connecting to Windows Live and, as such, StudioCloud can not work with Windows Live/Hotmail at this time.**" (http://app1.studiocloud.com/support/index.php?/article/AA-00265/0).
Are there any plans on resolving this issue?
As a small business owner, I need to streamline my processes.  If there is a possibilty of this being fixed in the near future, then I won't look at other options, but if it isn't, then I need to determine if I will be moving my email to another host, or using a different studio managment software, or finding a different method of handing my email communications with my clients which is efficient and meets my needs.
    Thank you.

  • Security issues with Lion

Anyone know what the real deal is with OS X Lion security.  I've heard lots of things about how the recent Blackhat conference in Las Vegas said that Apple's security was not as good as Windows 7's.  Anyone know anything about this?  Thanks in advance for any feedback or input.

I don't understand why it would cause security risks when it is supposed to be a patch to fix them?!  Is it safe to go ahead and open/install?

  • Security Issues with 8.1 Pro

I have had several security issues with Windows 8.1 Pro.
I am curious if the following apps should be loaded by default:
    CheckPoint.VPN
    JuniperNetworks.JunosPulseVpn
    SonicWALL.MobileConnect
    F.vpn.client
These programs are installed on a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro but I do not think they should be.  They are present prior to the install of any 3rd party programs or apps.
    Thanks

I found them in my firewall list on my Windows 8.1 Pro installation and posted a question on a forum as well, though I don't think it was here.  I don't believe anyone ever answered.
It looks as though these are parts of the bundled virtual private networking clients.

  • Privacy/Security Issue with Adobe Flash 10

Not sure if anyone has noticed this or not, but there is a
bizarre (if minor) privacy/security issue with Adobe Flash Player
    10. I came across it while attempting to upload a file to Flickr.
Previous versions of AFP do not exhibit this problem.
    Specifics: using Firefox 3.x, Vista.
The problem: When Flickr calls the "open file" dialogue in
Flash 10 (in order to upload files) via the "Upload Photos and
Videos" link, at the bottom of the dialogue, to the right of the
"File Name" box, sits a common UI element that brings up a dropdown
menu of what appear to be (or at least are supposed to be) recently
viewed or downloaded or accessed files. Actually I'm not sure how
Flash 10 compiles or accesses this list of files, but at any rate,
a list of files come up.
The problem is that, as far as I can tell, the list of files
that come up reference a long list of files, some that are very old
and that no longer exist, and that there is no way that I can find
to clear the list. This is a minor security/privacy issue, as
generally there should be a way to prevent a dialogue from
displaying a long list of past-accessed files by clearing a cache
somewhere or other -- imagine if it was impossible to clear the
history of a web browser, for example -- this would be considered a
pretty significant privacy issue. I have tried everything from
flushing the browser cache to uninstalling and reinstalling the
browser to uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Flash to using the
Flash Settings Manager to clear out the Flash saved sites to
turning off Vista indexing to clearing out Vista's Recent Items
list. None of these actions did anything to clear out this list of
files. I can find no references to these files anywhere when I use
Vista Search (with unindexed and system files searched as well),
and I can find no reference to the files anywhere in the registry
(I checked just in case Flash 10 was storing this index in some
really bizarre place.) I've linked to a screenshot below of what
I'm talking about -- most of the files listed below were deleted a
long, long time ago, and so I have no idea why this dialogue refers
    to them.
    Screenshot
Is there a simple work-around for this that I'm unaware of?
Even if there is, there needs to be some more obvious way to clear
out this list. Where is this information being stored, and what
criteria does this list use to "put a file on the list"?

Thanks for putting me on the right scent. That's what I'd
originally thought, too -- it's just that the file-> open dialog
was giving an entirely different list of files with other
applications, so I assumed that it must be Flash that was the
culprit. Turns out the reason it was different with Flickr was
because it was restricting the file results via a long string of
video and picture filetypes that are compatible with the Flickr
    service.
It turns out the information I'm looking for is buried deep
within the registry. The only way to clear out this list of files
is to delete the following key (or specific subkeys):
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSavePidl MRU
Seems more than a little stupid to store such information in
the registry if security is your concern. Vista beguiles me
    sometimes.

  • Data Security Issue

So my question is actually two-part.  In the last 9 days I have had to swap out my rMBP on two separate occasions (nightmare of a story, would love to tell under separate cover, must conclude that despite all of the problems and inconveniences the AMAZING support rep I dealt with via phone from Apple customer care went ABOVE and beyond in every sense and aside from pick up and drop off, handled absolutely everything for me remotely, amazing.)  I am now on my third rMBP, the second replacement.  With my absolutely critical need for my only computer and everyday laptop I have had very short windows of time to SECURELY erase my extremely, sensitive to me, data in between swap outs.
On all occasions I have had FileVault2 enabled at the very least, with an 11-15 character admin/unlock password and prior to dropping it off I backed up my drive with ChronoSync and CarbonCopyCloner to (Journaled, Encrypted) USB drives.  After I double-checked the backups, I booted to Disk Utility from a thumb drive and ran a quick format multiple times, switching back and forth between (Journaled) and (Journaled, Encrypted) and alternating keys.  When I dropped off my original rMBP, I did one last format to non encrypted so they can install an OS and the drive didn’t even have a recovery partition and they had to download one via internet recovery.
When I took the first replacement home, I booted to my thumb drive and quick formatted the new drive to (Journaled, Encrypted) before installing a fresh copy of Mountain Lion. Rather than restoring the disk from my CarbonCopy clone, I decided to start fresh and selectively copy the data back. Note: I cannot say for sure whether I manually enabled FileVault2 or if it was already enabled as a result of the (Journaled, Encrypted) format, but I can say with certainty that it was enabled prior to the following…
When I realized that I would need to replace the computer yet again, I followed the same process, ChronoSync selective backup and CarbonCopyCloner full drive clone to (Journaled, Encrypted) USB drives, quick format back and forth between encrypted and non-encrypted partitions, alternating keys each time, leaving them with a non-encrypted drive with no recovery drive and no OS.
I DID NOT LOSE ANY DATA, I HAVE EVERYTHING SAFE:  However, with actual responsibilities taking over part of my brain for a few minutes, before I ran the formats on the drive, and rushed to the Apple store, I decided to make one last selective backup of mission critical data just as a safety net should something horrible happen to my other two backup drives.  To my surprise right now, I did not realize that a 1Password backup is stored in plain text.  I had my 1Password backup in a BACKUP folder right on the desktop.  I have spent the last couple of hours scavenging IT security blogs to see what kind of trouble I am in and I can’t seem to find anything definitive.  From some articles it seems as though Passware would be able to recover an encryption key, no matter how difficult, in under 40 minutes, so long as the system wasn’t shut down entirely.  The full shut down, I cannot confirm for sure on either swap out that I left with them. I can’t imagine this would be possible from a blinking folder boot with no recovery drive but, I am by no means a security “genius”.  Even then, my obvious hope having resorted to the strategy was that the alternating keys with back and forth full drive encryption would render any recoverable data entirely useless.
MY FIRST QUESTION: What is the likelihood that someone would be able to recover my data?  What is the likelihood that Apple outfits their stores and geniuses with a toolbox including the necessary hardware/software to accomplish this?  If you think this is an issue I better, at the very least, get started on changing some 250+ passwords and calling my finance institutions.
On the second replacement, I took a shorter route, I booted to my thumb drive and quick formatted the new drive to (Journaled, Encrypted), and then restored my previous drive from the CarbonCopy clone.  Everything seems to be working fine with one odd exception, shut down and boot are considerably slower 5-10x and on boot, initially I have to unlock my new disk partition that I created before the restore and then it brings me to my OS login where I can login with my previous password.
MY SECOND QUESTION: What the **** did I do wrong? Have I stumbled upon some kind of double-encryption?  The two passwords can’t hurt but the slow shut down and boot are incredibly annoying. My guess is that my user account from my last computer is not lining up the drive encryption on the new machine and its causing some kind of an issue.

    Dear SoftDesire
TDE is not for you, if the data is exported when the wallet is open you will export clear data, if the data is exported while the wallet is closed the data will be unreachable.
The way for you is to make copy of the data - mask the sensetive data using products as oracle data masking pack or [http://www.orbiumsoftware.com/products/jumbledb-express/], and then export the allready masked schema / database.
Please notice I am related to - www.orbiumsoftware.com, this is no selling effort - just a sample of tool you can use, oracle provide same tool called - data masking pack and its part of the enterprise manager grid control.

  • Access to Word ODBC security issue maybe

Hi I have a vba process in an access application that creates a word document and then saves it, automatically to a specific folder and name. This works as expected in windows xp and windows 7. However in windows 8/8.1 the process is halted and a saveas
dialog is opened to the users library folder with the default name of document1.
I am wondering whether this is because of some security setting? I have unsuccessfully tried setting UAC to the lowest setting.
Could this be a security issue? If yes any suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Jonathan

    Hi,
As I known, the using of Document.save() is no different in Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Based on your description, this issue can be caused by configuration environment, please post back your Office version, VBA code and the information about environment here, so that we can determine which cause this issue.
